Dc199 all moves in - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Thankyou!

I have all the builds/adjustments for Dc199 but some are still marked preliminary (player(s) have been notified)

when these builds are 'not' marked preliminary, I will adjudicate this turn early.

Fall 1902 Results - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Fall 1902
News of the world:

Enrico Caruso makes his first gramophone recording.
Aswan Dam is completed in central Egypt, becoming the chief means of storing irrigation water for the Nile valley.
The fossils of a Tyrannosaurus rex are discovered by Barnum Brown in Hell Creek, Montana.

Meanwhile European powers attempt to gain control of several key areas. Austria takes a couple of major hits and will need to find new quarters for some of their troops this Autumn. Faulty telegraph wires may be to blame as France finds their support for British troops fall flat. And the German Kaiser remains incommunicado. The people of Germany will be seeking a new leader for 1903.

DC191 - Winter 1906 Extension - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Heya folks,

Looks as though I'm missing orders from one player for Winter. However, the last couple of days my internet connection has been having a hairy canary, courtesy of my service provider.. Now, this SHOULDN'T affect things being sent to Gmail - but just in the weird chance that it might have I feel we need to extend the Winter deadline 24 hours.

The player in question has been notified via seperate email and the Winter will be put out tonight with or without his orders.

Thanks for the patience everyone. Cheers,

T.

DC196 - Once Again Recruiting - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Well folks,

In the theory that the more players actually take part in a game, the better, we will be opening DC-196 for recruiting once again. Our Turkish player, Nicola, has had to step down due to some very serious real life troubles. Our friendly game is on hold for the moment while I find some brave soul daring enough to step to the table with you fine competitors. =)

Seriously though, Nicola - I hope things work out for you what with the latest financial troubles. Good luck, brother.

Cheers people. I'll let you know who is stepping in as the Sultan as soon as I know myself.

DC209 COME HOME. KENT BAKKER! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Now Sims, just because some other guy named Kent Bakker had success in this variant, doesn't mean you have to single me out... I appreciate the vote of confidence though!!

Good luck all...

Kent Bakker says you all have nothing to be afraid of from me... Sims and Trout are far deadlier than lil ol' Rob

DC191 Study In Baltic - Winter 1906 - The Stockbro... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Holmes and Watson, at gunpoint, found themselves escorted through the Finnish woods along a narrow game-trail. The three men behind them remained silent, the gunman only grunting out directions whenever they reached a crossing or a branch in the path. After they had been walking for roughly an hour, the leader ordered them to stop for a break.

Sherlock eyed their abducters cooly, then ventured "Pycroft, I presume."

The gunman sputtered briefly, then regained himself. "You're as smart as they say you are, Mr. Holmes. But that's enough out of you."

Holmes wouldn't be stopped though. "Do your friends, the Piner brothers, know that you are a mere stockbroker's clerk when not acting the role of armed thug? Or are they going by their name of Beddington once again?"

The firearm was cocked. "I said that was enough. There's lots of ships being built in Finland these days - you could hide a body in one of their holds real easy like..." Pycroft motioned towards the trail. "Now get walking..."

--------------------------

Heya folks,

There are, indeed, a lot of ships being built in Finland. Fleets spring up in Helsingfors and Vasa - and an army in Kuopio for good measure. Meanwhile, a fleet of a different colour shows up in Danzing and the boys from Siljan get the train-ride home.

On we go into the Spring of 1907. Deadline for orders will be set for Friday, September 26th (11:59 PM GMT).

Cheers!

DC 192 End of Game statement - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
've kind of been dilatory in getting around to this. I've been under the weather for the past couple of days which coincided with my birthday so do forgive the lapse in time.

First things first, many thanks to Paolo for running this game. You were an excellent GM who put up with my near constant revision of orders and guesswork. I'm fairly sure I filled up your email inbox in the course of this game.

Of course, I also want to thank all of the participants in the game. I think we all developed a rapport in the game and kept things civil, and I appreciate that.

Anyhoo, to get right down to it, I'll try to detail my strategy for you guys. This was my first time playing Germany in a diplomacy game, so I'm pretty sure I played an unorthodox strategy, but I suppose it worked. I'm probably going to detail my strategy in the west first, and then discuss the east. The inital strategy I focused on was an attack on France supported by England and Italy. This strategy was suggested by England and having heard nothing from France I decided to go with it. It was initially successful, but in the fall turn, Andy inexplicably held in the North sea, meaning he did not acquire a supply center that turn. That was alright at the time, because France failed to submit builds for his turn.

At that time, I turned to Mike and suggested an accomodation with him regarding the north, with a division of England. Subsequently, France abandoned the game and was replaced by David who was much more skilled and much more communicative than the previous France. I think Adam and I were discussing David as a new player and Adam remarked that he was getting done with the first paragraph of an email sent out by him.

So, with Andy not getting any builds that turn, I felt that he might be a drag on my expansion with Mike potentially getting more out of the north than myself. So I felt justified in reversing course. Had Andy moved to Norway, this would have been a very different game I think.

So, with David and myself in a pretty firm alliance, with Mike agreeing to assist us against Andy, we set out to conquer England. Given Andy's relative weakness, his position was breached fairly early and he was eliminated due to our triple attack.

In the east, things were generally unsettled throughout the game. This was my intention seeing that Mike was attacking Pat with Stuart on the fence. In order to keep things uncertain in the East, I moved a couple of units into the east to further unbalance things there. My stab against Mike was guesswork, he figured I would attack Norway, and accordingly moved there. I moved into Sweden and that move put me in the lead as far as Supply Centers went. Subsequently, Mikes overextension allowed Pat, myself, and Stuart to carve him up in a few turns. I think he lost Warsaw, Rumania, Bulgaria, St. P and Sev in a year.

As per my agreement with David, I submitted a draw proposal at that time calling for a two way draw between the two of us. It was voted down (I think I was at 12 centers and he was at 11 at that point). The next year brought me to 14 with Sev and Vienna falling to a smothering offensive. Another draw proposal was submitted (not by me) and that one was voted down as well. With an assist from Adam, I was able to capture Budapest and that brought me to 15, with David at 12 or 13. A final draw proposal was submitted and voted down. I was better positioned to gain 18, and I went for it and was successful.

Fall 1904 correction - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Hello again all,

I have a habit of re-reading the orders after adjucation just to make sure no blobs was made, and found that I made one.

The only change is the German support of the English army.

Next time Darryl please see to it that the frogmen do not try to support from Baltic Sea

His order was A Bal S A Pic - Bur, a typo but one that have concequences (might be hard of me to not allow it, but I know from experience that it is better to point it out so players re-read their orders before sending them in).

New maps attached and the deadline is the same as in the previous mail.

Sorry for this guys.

DC 212 Let's Kick off this game! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Hey folks,
As you can see from the subject we have our game number which is DC 212. Please include DC 212 in your subject line of all emails related to this game. I have a filter set up to go into a specific folder so that way I will never miss an email. Country assignments are listed below along with the players and their email addresses. If you didn't receive your first or second choices I'm sorry about that. But I tried to give everyone their first 3 choices. I hope everyone is satisfied with their assignment.
If you would like to CC me on any correspondences or anything at all please feel free. I like to see how the other players are interacting and the different way each person plays. If you do not feel comfortable with this I completely understand. I do not have a set of house rules for you so please refer to the DC website rules. I however do have a few rules of my own. I do allow White and Grey Press and any press sent to me will be included in the next adjudication. For those who do not know what those are: White press is: Press you send me and you want the other players to know who sent it. Grey press is anonymous and your name or country will not be mentioned in the adjudication. I also do NOT allow any type of Black Press. Black Press is impersonating the GM or another Player. If you are caught doing either of those you will be removed from the game and I will let the mods know. Also please don't NMR, not only does the NMR affect when I adjudicate the game but if you NMR too many times I may have to remove you from the game and if I have to do that it affects any realtions or plans you may have had with the other players and they will have to start all over again. Below is the list of players, along with the deadline and a note from one of your fellow players.

Players:

Austria: Jon Stern <jstern78(at)gmail.com>
England: Greg Neilsen <yeeha77(at)yahoo.com>
France: Patrick Canning <lin.charles(at)gmail.com>
Germany: Former Trout <former.trout(at)gmail.com>
Italy: Jimmy Ghostine <Jimmy.Ghostine(at)vtmednet.org>
Russia: David Ellsworth <davidellsworth(at)sbcglobal.net>
Turkey: Charles Lin <lin.charles(at)gmail.com>

Please note the message from David Ellsworth ( Russia ) below.:

Email sent to my home addy (sbcglobal.net) will find its way to my work addy (dart.biz), but not the other way around. I will likely write most of my emails from work, but I will CC my home addy so that hopefully others will not accidentally send me email only to my work addy.

Thanks again
DaveE

Since this is the first turn of the game we will have a slightly long deadline so that everyone gets a chance to talk. The deadline for Spring 01 is Oct 1 at 7pm EST ( 11pm GMT ).

Thanks,
- Rachael

Wnter 1901 Adjustments - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
It's my party and I want to invite them all!

And with everyone playing nicely in the sandbox to date, we have a rather crowded board as we move into what should be a fun and fairly intense 1902. Thus, I have also decided to allow for an additional day of negotiations. Let's have our Spring 1902 orders due on Friday 26 Sep at 11:59pm GMT. If you get 'em in early, I'll of course adjudicate early...

Happy hunting!

Bruce

Briton/Breton EOG - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Thanks once again to Trout for a really well managed game that was both fun and interesting throughout.

Congratulations of course to Mikael! Well done.

You were the first to write me after the game launch and here's what you had to say on 2/19/08, a day after the start:

"Bruce, I must say, we seem to be the brothers of misfortune here - our nations are extremely vulnerable, compared to the others. A toast to our luck and fortune to survive! / Mikael"

Here's my toast to your victory in this one!

But as Mikael pointed out in his early email to me, Briton (not the Bretons from Brittany, right?!) is in a tough starting position. Essentially surrounded by the other three Western powers, you pretty much have to hope you can make friends with someone. My diplomacy unfortunately failed me utterly in this one as ultimately two of my neighbors stabbed me (I attacked the other), relegating me to second class power status for most of this game. I didn't get on a roll again until the Swedes invaded! The never-ending civil war-like situation in the West guaranteed a victory for either the Norse or Swedes by by the middle game. I tried to jump on the S/N bandwagon, and did I guess, but too little, too late I'm afraid.

No matter, a better player than me could maybe of done something more with the Britons. I can envision it starting out as a land-based force complementing one of the other Western powers' sea-based force in an effort to clean out the British Isles before confronting the East. The most geographically advantaged player on the board to start with in my opinion is the Anglo Saxon.

I look forward to seeing the new map and making a comparison.

Thanks again to all and best regards.

Bruce

Subject: Re: DC161 Knights Who Say Ni! - Fall 836 - Swedish Solo Victory - Ministry of Silly Walks

Please do CC me on all EOGs - and in your commentary on the variant (which is very welcome and appreciated, both positive and critical) - please - please - please - take a look at the new Dark Ages map (Trout has a copy, as do I - so please ask if you don't have it) and let us know if you think the changes made already address your concerns or if further work needs to be done.

Unlike most surveys Smile your opinions here really do count and will all be considered as I continue to develop Dark Ages.

Thanks to one and all for playing - I hope you all enjoyed it, and please consider giving the new revision a chance if you feel inclined to GM or play more in the future - it's much more balanced, particularly as it affects the Danes, Gaels, and Swedes.

- B., the variant designer

Good morning. I'm sorry to have kept you waiting, but I'm afraid my walk has become rather sillier recently, and so it takes me rather longer to get to work.

The walking in DC-161 is complete now, the Swedes marching their way into a 19 center solo victory. A big congratulations go to Mikael, as well as to Bruce, Josh and Clark who hang on through the Swedish tidal wave to pick up survivals. All end-game proposals failed to reach united consensus, but Mikael took matters into his own hands.

Through blood and fire, the Dark Ages game now comes to conclusion. My thanks to all players for their efforts in this one - I think we can easily say that it was a resounding success. Your end-game statements are highly encouraged, along with any comments you might have as to the layout of the map and the playability of the positions.

This was truly a pleasure to GM folks. Thank you all for taking a part in it. Congrats once again to Mikael, and thanks for everyone for being such a wicked bunch of savages. =P

Cheers everyone!
