PS f03 results! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Boeotia is dislodged from the SC, denying the convoy, and breaking the front line in Achaia… Elia loses their 3rd home center, but survives on a couple dots… and the pressure on Messenia mounts as the Laconians line up on the border…

What next?

Lots of RETREATS, some BUILDS, and and unfortunate pair of DISBANDS!

We’ll make this all due Tuesday, 2pm Pacific:

Boeotia:
A Achaia can go to Protilae or OTB
F Sinus Corinthiucus can retreat to Helicon or OTB

Elia:
A Dafni can go to Protilae or OTB

Since 2 units can retreat to Protilae, if they both do, they both disband!

Tho it may be no matter as we need a removal from both parties anyways:

Boeotia: Remove 1
Elia: Remove 1
Aetolia: Build 2
Laconia: Build 1

Boeotia and Elia should both send me a retreat, and a removal in case the retreat to Protilae succeeds.

Enjoy,
-mike

Truth or Dare - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
One of the parts of Diplomacy that most fascinates me is when to tell the truth, and when do you bend it a bit, or for those who can do it well, when do you outright lie. For myself I start every game with the intention of telling the truth all the time. At some point I usually have to bend it, omit something, or (yes even me once in a while) outright lie. What is more common? Do you aim to lie or do you aim to make solid long term friends?

I tend to react less favorably to those who seem more demanding. If you need someone to help you shouldn't you show them how it would benefit them?

I am a statistics junky so to me hanging in a game even as a puppet of someone who otherwise has beaten me, gets me less of a rating loss than just giving up. Is that an unusual viewpoint?

My first win on DC was with the help of a player with whom I developed an extremely trusting alliance with. In the end I was bigger and I use his vulnerability and trust to win in one season (gaining a bunch of his undefended SCs). The game was a bit one sided in that with our cooperation, few others could stand against us. The down side was that our trust led to his loss. The nobler thing to have done might have been to ask for a two way draw, but this is a game to win right?

Well these are just a few thoughts to ponder and reply to if you wish.

David, I think this ties in very well with the article in DW #101, I think it was the 3rd place write-in piece.
I agree that I at least enter every game with Honest intentions, and respond to how others react to me.
I think one of the givens of the game is that even if you are completely loyal to your allies, someone will think you were duplicitous.

Cheating in Diplomacy - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
"Well, why not? Cheating is hardly out of place in a game which makes a cardinal virtue of deception." Twisted Evil according to the 1979 2nd edition Gamer's Guide to Diplomacy.

Then that was the board game and we're playing online without any face-to-face contact. Does it make a lot of difference? Yes, I think it does.
So it should not surprise anyone that the rules for the online game have been adjusted to its medium. Remember that the only way we know the other players is through this game. Our tactics determine how we're perceived. And I think that this is where there is a danger in cheating in online Diplomacy: others may perceive a 'cheater' in the game as a cheater in real life. That would definitely bar the cheater from ever being able to agree on a pact with the others. Of course, players should not expect someone to act in a similar way across all games. But let's confess: don't we all anticipate this in a way?

So I wholeheartedly agree with the conclusion at the end of the 2nd edition's chapter on Cheating: "Cheating is of course no substitute for thorough negotiations and sound strategy and tactics. It is a technique that will help on a rare occasion and should be used with great restraint."

My take I think is a quite common one; The aim to tell the truth as long as possible, but still having the overall goal to winning each board I sit down to play on. Then, of course, you would have to define winning, which does wary from player to player.

On a different side on the same matter, by playing in the same group and with roughly the same people, you develop a relation to thoose players AND a reputation as well. For example, I will often prefer to work with someone I know to be reliable rather than one who is prone to beeing erratic/making nmr's and so forth. This provides a further challenge, due to the fact that reliable players are often that much better at the game itself - which can lead to some very interesting in-game discussions.

Hi guys,
This is of course one of the eternal questions facing Diplomacy players - when to lie and when to tell the truth. A book could be written on the matter. Many things play in... the anonymity of playing on the internet, crossed with the closeness of playing in a community.

Here in dc, I bet players get to know each other game after game, whereas say on a judge, things can be completely anonymous. Thus here we have to plan for the future, establish credibility, etc. In face to face play, you learn the personalities of all your friends, and you use that to your best ability. Same thing here. That's one thing I really like about the club play, is that you do get to know each other, and try to figure out how to beat the people you know. It's not a matter of playing objectified strangers.

Even what constitutes a lie is different to everyone. I recently had one person tell me... "Yeah I agreed to the DMZ but I never agreed I wouldn't go there"... I was like... Um yeah, ok. Mental note for the future about what this person says. Surprisingly, no this one did not come from Ray.

So everyone is different. I try to play every game without lying, and without resorting to loopholes or technicalities... for once you do that, you set yourself up as someone you cant really talk to, w/o a level of confidence that what you talk about will be meaningful. In many games I succeed, for if you're attacked, you generally have to lie less than if you're the attacker. And I've gotten attacked a lot lately. Smile

But of course there comes a time when you have to make choices, and have to either stab someone, or lead someone on, or whatever... and those who master that ability to lie will do well.

Some telltale signs of a lie...

- if a player normally writes you daily, and stops.
- if a player's tone seems to be oddly different
- if a player makes a move and explains it with a rationale that doesnt seem like a realistic explanation.
- if a player insists on moving by your centers, or keeping units in places that are not strategically suited to growth elsewhere.
- if a player tells you "i'm not playing for a win, really".

Any variants out there ppl want to see? What's the next big thing... the Open Games list has been a little uninspiring lately without too much variant activity. What haven't we done for a while? Colonial? World?

Anybody got a hankering to GM something cool?

Who wants to GM the next standard?

Once WOT 1 is done, I will try to fill a WOT2. If it wont go I will try a different Variant.
As for a standard, as soon as one of the ones I am running is done I will be up for another.

Taking from this loss a learning how to use the fog of war
Nothing further shall be muttered, not a feather will be fluttered

Now the beaten pirates leave us as they ponder days of yore
