dc182 w02 builds! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Builds are out! We have new armies for Germany, Russia, and Turkey, and just as many new fleets for England!

Note: We have now reached the end of 02. As I said in the game-start mail, I’d check all the orders up till this point. Many of you have had what would have been various misorders and had been contacted to fix them, but that wont be the case going forward. Be absolutely sure to check when fleets move to bi-coastal spaces, for if it can move to (or build on) either one, it’ll fail if not specified. And of course make sure you know where your units are. If you cant tell on the map, I can clarify. If you have any questions about valid orders, you’re of course encouraged to ask them, and I’ll get back to you, but most orders will just be acknowledged with an “okie” and when it comes to deadline time I’ll just run the turn!

Spring 03 for this Friday, 10am Pacific!
Enjoy,
-mike

Order Correction for Spring 1906 - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
England is correct in that he did send a more recent move order for his North Sea Fleet.

From England:
I request a delay. I have raised an objection to the adjudication due to an error on my moves Spring 1906. I have not heard anything in response to my objection. I ordered F NTH-SKA, not F NTH-Den. I have confirmation.

This does change a few things.

England moves into SKA and NTH as ordered.
Germany advances into Kiel, and forces a retreat by France. (France may retreat to Holland or Ruhr.)
Willie, I need that retreat as soon as possible.

I have attached revised realpolotik and gif files.

Once the retreat is back I will set the new Fall 1906 move date.

My apologies for the error.

Babylon 5 - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
While puting together the Star Trek Dip variant, I ran across a lot of Babylon 5 stuff, especially a complete variant in the Variant Bank.

It's that version I took, made some minor mods and tweaks, and set up to run in RealWorld. If you're a fan of this series, you should be happy with this variant. Check out the entry for it on DipWiki which includes an image of the map with starting positions and a link to a "Players Guide."

dc186 Spring '71 results - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
GM Notes:
The delay today was due to:

1. Inaccurate Abbreviations. For the most part the consensus was to be lenient at this time. However one order was considered ambiguous because it could have been referring to more than one place, thus the unit held in place. If you do not write out the entire province name, The 1st map with the adjudication is a reference map that shows the home centers and province abbreviations. You should use the map to check to make sure you are using the correct abbreviations, since some of the province names can not be (properly) read when a unit is there. You may bookmark the link in case I don't attach it each turn.

2. Poorly Written Orders: There was also a case of a missing movement designator. Since there was no other unit in the area the order was considered poorly written but unambiguous. If another unit had been in the area the order would have been considered ambiguous and invalid.

For those who have not been in one of my games before: with retreat orders I include OTB as a retreat option. As a reminder that a unit may retreat Off The Board (disband).

To Replace or not to Replace that is the Question! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Hi Guys,

Firstly, let me say this is in no way a criticism of any GM I am currently playing under, and I mean that.

I would be interested to hear the opinions of wiser and more experienced players than me on the topic of withdrawals/NMR's.

To replace or not to replace ~ that is the question!

I am playing in two games at the moment where this question has arisen.
One where replacements have been sought, the other where CD has been declared and play continues.

In the first game, as players dropped out, new players were sought. As a newbie I didnt like what I thought then was a unnecessary delay but can see as the game wears on that my frustration over the delays is more than matched by a better more balanced game.

In the other game, Italy, Turkey and now Russia have all disappeared into the wilderness and CD'dom , leaving us in the Western side of the board fighting amongst each other for crumbs, while Austria cruises effortlessly to circa 14/15 centres. Not Austria's fault, and good luck to him, but surely not quite fair to us warring Western Nations?

While we bicker fight and stab over one or two centres, the Power alongside the defauters doesnt have to exercise any brain cells let alone an ounce of Diplomacy. But maybe this reflects life the way it is?

Would be interested to hear views of more experienced and long standing members on the site as well as newbies like myself concerning this issue.

Thanks,

Joe Smile

Too Many Abandonments? - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Hi Everyone,

I am new to the site, but not new to hobby and had a question. I have played one game on the site thus far (dc142) which contained not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 abandonments. Is that par for the course? I certainly hope not, but I was wondering what the average number of abandonments is per game here?

I just started a world dip game (195) and I really like the variant, but I am concerned that the game will be adversely affected by civil disorders - nothing can ruin a game or give someone an edge like an untimely abandonment.

Also, i was wondering if there is a punishment for abandoning a game or a limit to the number of games a player can play at once (leading to a potential abondonment due to time constraints).

Thank you,
Steve

[Reply]

Unknown - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Steve, Thanks for a very good question.
4 abandons in a standard game is very high for our site.
Many games (mike cold give the detailed numbers) go without a single Abandon.
Players who abandon a game get a big ding against their player rating, and several abandons will make it likely that a GM will not accept them into their game.
Players are limited to one game until they have completed their first game, but exceptions are made for those who prove reliable.
As always, we are at the mercy of real life.
Most Abandons are replaces, not CD'ed. Many players will find their own replacements if RL prevents them from continuing. Also we have the Light Brigade, a group of players who get notified when a game needs a replacement. This keeps our games moving with only slight delays most of the time.
