Lesson learned.

DC196 Heroes and Villains - Game-Launch!! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Hi folks,

Welcome to DC-196, which I've affectionately titled 'Heroes and Villains.' Thanks to all of you for your patience while I collected confirmations from everyone. With that behind us, we're set to rock and roll.

You'll find attached a copy of my house rules - I know they're somewhat intimidating but please take some time and run through them. Any grey areas that will come up during game-play will be resolved using these, so its best to know whats in them. If you have any questions or comments, please just let me know.

A couple notes to bring up - English is not everyone's first language in this group so please be aware of that. As a grumpy redneck Western Canadian, its best to use single syllable words with me. =) Also, please note that Jean-Luc and Laurence are related - this will have ZERO affect on game-play but there it is for the record.

With that, we're off! Happy dipping folks! Spring 1901 orders will be due Wednesday, July 2nd (11:59 PM GMT).

Cheers everyone!

DC 175: Seven Pedigree Rats...End Game - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Hey Paolo…as you requested,
End Game Player Commentary (Germany 13 centers)
This was the first Diplomacy game I have played in a while and only the second time I have ever played online. Our GM was very helpful in getting me (as a relative newbie) acclimated to the game. He clarified rules and referred me to specific section when I had questions. His direction coupled with his timely return of results made the game very enjoyable.

The two season system took a little getting used to. It allows for a very fast pace to the game, which I liked. But it can lead to some very convoluted planning…Especially during the fall turns when move orders, retreats and builds must all be anticipated at once. This system really forced me to think into the future. It was like playing chess and having to write three moves out in advance. Very tricky!

Then there’s my fellow players: I guess it is common for folks to drop out of these games, and that is too bad. The game would have ended much differently had Austria remained in the game. But on the positive side…I have to say I really admired how Tom/France stuck it out all the way. Sitting with one center for several game years, he kept in the game when others might have just bailed out. Tom…Even though you were a thorn in my Spain, I appreciated you staying in the game. And of course I have to congratulate Drew on the solo win…blah blah blah…I should never have let you in my back yard. Like I mentioned before…It wasn’t your units taking over the Austria centers that killed me, but the ones that had my guys pinned in place that finally forced my surrender. Great game guys, I look forward to playing with you again sometime…and maybe I’ll try to GM a game in the future. Till then…I’ll just sit here and sharpen my knives.

thanks to all and to all a good night - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
wow, neat, far out, turkey pulled out the win. better to be lucky i guess. my first game in 25 or so years at all... and first on dip corp and... wow, solo? still find it hard to believe.

a special thanks to paolo our game master or as i like to say... god (with a little g). if the rest of the game masters are as understanding then this is a great web site. any questions i had answered with clarity (and rule book page numbers and rule numbers and paragraph). and i even got to point out map issues which i think was done just to see if we (the players) are paying attention.

thanks to the other players. jake in austria who had to leave late in the game. but when all said an austrian-turkish partnership could not work we proved it could, and i was one of the biggest doubters. always waiting for the knife in the back. then to germany, hi dean, i was ready to share then... what the heck, you did a hell of a job and as a replacement player. tom in france with one unit for how many turns? amazing how that works. the russian and italians that fell early both stuck it out when all was lost so a toast to them also. the thing i am most proud of was i almost played the whole game with out a knife. when i landed a turkish army in liverpool from greece, i did tell england that i had know reason to go north of the mid atlantic and that's when the knife came out. sorry england but a six fleet convoy was way to hard to pass up.

mostly my first game in so long, and i had every break i could. from guessing right on the first fall and preventing the russians from building a fleet in sevestapol. to austria having to leave at the most opportune time for turkey to solo. better to be lucky than good.

one last thing.. to dean...i did have fun storming the castle.

cheers to all,
the sultan of the ott-omens (omens, only good ones this game)

Fellow Knights of the Charter!

The last several weeks have been busy ones, here at Diplomaticcorp. And we have the promotions among our fellow Knights to prove it. =)

Please join me in congratulating our fellow brothers and sisters in arms:

Sir Stephen Lytton for continuing to lead the way with his promotion to the Order of the Rose.

Sir Mikael Johansson for rising to the Order of the Raven.

Sir Christine Stoy for soaring into the lofty heights as a Knight of the Raven.

Sir Matt Kremer for the attainment of the rank of Knight Errant

And your humble servant, Sir Former Trout, for rising through the Rank of the Mammoth and pushing on as a Knight of the Acorn.

Finally, please welcome Sir Garry Bledsoe to our ranks as our newest Initiate Knight. His presence in the Charter is more than welcome. =)

Cheers!

Knights Of The Companions - Recent Promotions - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Congratulations, everyone! I know this issue won't crop up very often, but shouldn't Christine receive the title "Dame" instead of "Sir"?

lol...

Trust me - if you're ever lucky enough to be in a game with Christine, I'm sure she'd teach you to call her 'Mister!'

DC191 A Study In Baltic - Spring 1902 - A Case Of... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
The letter had been announced as from Mr. Holmes and Watson eagerly took it up to see the contents. The writing was in his friends clear, crisp hand, and as usual was direct and straight to the point.

'Watson,

The difficulties you described in acquiring passage to the Baltic were present but easily overcome by a man of my trifling abilities. Forgoing the usual passenger lines, I acquired a cabin in the freighter Calhammer bound for Oslo and leaving on Tuesday. The trick will be in finding passage back, especially with the merry Mrs. Watson in tow. However, as I will be accompanying you I have no doubt that we will find something quite suitable at the time.

Yours,

Holmes.

PS - The news of the latest Polish excursions into southern Russia is quite exhilarating. One has to wonder what face and identity our Polish friends displayed in order to get the good Tsar to trust them to such a degree... '

Watson folded the letter, and sat to write one of his own to his wife - letting her know that they would soon be on their way... With Holmes aide, he was sure that they would be able to spirit her home from the Baltic in no time.

------------------------

Heya guys,

Finland and Russia continue to stymie each other while the Poles mount a daring expedition into Riga. Meanwhile, the Swedes look to their southern border, while at the same time managing to keep eyes in the north as well.

No retreats are required, so we move right on into Fall 1902. With one of our members currently on vacation, we'll set the deadline for a little longer than a week and have all moves in by Tuesday, July 8th (11:59 PM GMT).

Please let me know if you spot any errors. Cheers!

Hi,
Listing the players by country is a feature we've considered putting in place, but are still consdiering the pros and cons of. What do people think of this? Is this an invasion of privacy to allow one to sort for all the players in say Louisiana (and assume they're in or close to NO / BR) and be able to then email them to set up local games?

Would there be an interest to find local players for ftf games, or do most places already have a local gaming club?
Suggestions?

I would certainly like that. If there is a local gaming club here, I sure don't know about it.
