DC 138 - EGS - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
In reply Lee,

You'll remember that back last March I made the decision to side with Cuba and Cali against you. I wrote that (rather stupid) note informing you of such and you promptly hit me with both barrels.

There were a couple of reasons for it, which, at the time at least, I thought were logical. 1. Calif was basically saying you're either with me or against me. With most of my offensive capabilities in the South and no deal with BC at the time, I felt Ray was in a superior position and that I just couldn't afford to go after him at that point, even with your help Lee.

Secondly, Cuba, although inferior in strength to me, was positioned better against me than you. You had already started to really roll in the Caribbean and frankly, I didn't see anything stopping you. I maybe would have gotten Ven out of a deal with you, but otherwise I would be locked out of the Caribbean.

That and given your on-again, off-again relationship with Ray, I figured once Cuba was gone, you and Ray would turn on me to clean-up the last south-of-the-border holdout.

So it was just a short-term, personal survival thing: It kept Ray off my back for a few turns and kept you from cleaning house in the Carib. Ray's 'diplomacy' really didn't figure into it.

Bruce

Subject: DC 138 - EGS

The prophesies were correct.

The South has risen again.

First off, I started off this game looking down the shotgun at Cuba. If I were to give a recommendation on this map, I would say you have to put some space between Havana and Miami. I know they are close in real life, but man, its just too close. There can be almost no chance for trust in that relationship unless they could put another sea zone in between them. I know that means that might mean compromising the geographic integrity of the map, but we do that all the time anyways.

One funny little note. As I started playing, I would often sign off as Jeb Bush who was the governor of Florida and President Bush's brother. I wasn't trying to trick anyone, I was just having fun. But apparently, Peru did not know of the second Bush in Florida. Instead, Peru thought that I was Texas, and proceeded to tell me his plans to entangle Cuba and Florida. I thought I would play along, see what he had to say. It revealed little other than that he was trying to get Texas on his side to go against everyone else. I think he eventually figured out that I was Florida and not Texas, and he cut off correspondence with me. Which was fine by me, since Mexico and Cuba were working on eliminating him. A question to the more experienced players: Do yall think that I should have done as I did and allowed him to believe I was Texas instead of Florida, or do yall think that I should have just corrected him when he first made the mistake (even though he had already revealed that he wanted to send Cuba to tangle with me)?

Instead of Cuba being my first engagement, I turned away from the Caribbean to the West. Cali pushed me towards Texas, and I eventually saw Tex as a better bet for an attack. I supposed Cuba was expecting a stab. Especially when Felix had to leave the game, I figured Jason would be pretty suspicious of my position. Putting Cuba off, I was able to expand into Texas rapidly with Ray's help. Bruce helped me out from Mexico into San Antonio and I felt pretty good. First mistake. Tex was pretty angry about my stab, and I apologize if I did anything dishonorable (in the context of the game). I was also surprised, as I think everyone was, by Tex not concerning himself with my continuing attack. Does anyone know what happened?

From there, I turned back towards Cuba. After routing Texas, I had struck up what I thought was a good relationship with Bruce down in ol' Mexico, and Ray, even if pushy, was still apparently my ally since we had fought Texas. As I mentioned, Peru had cut off correspondence with me, a foolish move since Cuba and Mexico made it their first priority to destroy him. It should have been clear to him that I wanted to wipe Cuba out of the picture. I'm still not sure why he didn't give up bs that we had started out the game with. Either way, it worked out for me that Cuba was throwing everything he had at Peru. And there was no reason for me to contact him. What could he offer me? That he would keep fighting for his life. He was going to do that anyways. Plus, had I contacted him before the stab, he could have warned Cuba and messed things up for me.

So I sprung on Cuba, and did pretty well. Things were going well, and I was still feeling good.

And that's when it happened. Cali started his march eastward, and Mex, who I thought would not betray me since he allowed me to enter into San Antonio without any promises, took California's request to come after me (understandably). In my builds, I turned towards defending my mainland SC, thinking Cali was the main danger to me, and I ignored the surviving Cuban unit. I'm not sure if this was a mistake. Cali was the most dangerous player for me, but Cuba almost made a come-back at my expense. Ray and I played tit for tat until he surged into my sphere. For the most part, I think there was little I could do to change this.

At this point, I would like to ask for some more advice. I believe that the reason that people turned on me at that point was because I had expanded too quickly, and Mex wanted to balance my growing power with an aggressive California. Is that correct? Bruce, I'd love to hear what your response?

For the next few turns, my strategy was pretty simple. I threw everything I had at Cuba in exile and did not worry much about Mexico. I knew that I could not make a deal with Cuba since I had stolen all his home SC's. He would attack me until he got them back. But for Bruce in Mexico, the situation was not so clear cut. Of course, he wanted to expand, but the main reason (as I understood it) Bruce had turned on me was pressure from Ray. If Bruce expanded rapidly, my best hope of not being quashed was getting Ray to turn on the growing Bruce.

With that logic I resisted as best I could for a couple of seasons, but there was little that I could do. Ray continued to promise me that he was done fighting me and that I could resume my war with Mexico, yet somehow I kept losing SC's to him. Then, in May, Ray was staking up SC's like Homer Simpson in a doughnut shop (we'll say Tim Hortons in honor of Canada's contributions to obesity in the Western Hemisphere), and he stabbed Bruce.

Simultaneously, we voted on a draw and he was the only one to not voice his choice publicly, making it appear like he was in full-blown solo mode. To be fair, I originally voted for the draw, and I was sincere. But, I changed my mind at the last minute (I voted for the war, before I voted against it?). I'm not really sure if Cali voted for the draw or not, but would love to know.

After that, Bruce came knocking, asking if I wanted to team up with him and Andrew, who I had not yet had any contact with. I signed up immediately, and we turned everything we had on Cali, after mostly finishing off Cuba.

It was great working with Andrew and Bruce in the end. For a while, I thought Andrew might go for the solo. Bruce and I had some bumps throughout the game, but we worked them out in the end. But I enjoyed playing with everybody, and would like to thank yall for making this a great game.

As for the game, I would repeat that Cuba and Florida need more space. Otherwise, I agree with Bruce: there are a lot of chances for fleets and convoys in the Caribbean, particularly for a peninsular power with an island power one space away. But over all I enjoyed this game. From Florida, I feel like a solo is possible, if you work on defending your mainland territory in those states south of the Mason-Dixon line, and focus on expansion to the south.

And I can't thank our GM enough for all those great fortune cookies.

Look forward to seeing yall in another game,
Lee
Moore

PS - Pardon the long letter, but it goes well with the long game.

Southeast Asia Diplomacy - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Interesting 1 I have only tried once. Not listed in DC variant area. Any takers? vegas_iwish(at)yahoo.com South East Asia Andrew Reddaway

Overview

This variant introduces a new map but maintains the standard Diplomacy rules owned by Hasbro. It straddles the equator, spanning the area from Burma in the west to Papua New Guinea in the east, and from Taiwan in the north to northern Australia in the south.

The intention of the variant is for seven closely-matched powers to contest 11 neutral supply centres, very similar in game play to the original European game.

The fictitious historical basis for the variant is that economic and
political instability broke out in China and South-east Asia in 1997.
Pro-democracy movements have caused unrest in territories such as East Timor
and Hong Kong. China split into several factions, with the southern portion
seeking allies among the members of Asean for its expansionist ambitions.

Setup

The seven powers are:

Australia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

Neutral supply centres are:

Singapore, Brunei, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Spratly
Islands, the Marianas islands, Papua New Guinea and East Timor.

All Powers start with three supply centres except Indonesia, who has four.
The game is more fleet-centred than Europe, except on the continent around
Laos etc. Vietnam, China and Thailand all start with one fleet, the others
start with two.

Starting Positions

Austria: Army Darwin, Fleet Cairns, Fleet Port Hedland
China: Army Guiyang, Army Kunming, Fleet Guangzhou
Indonesia: Army Balikpapan, Army Jakarta, Fleet Medan, Fleet Surabaya
Malaysia: Army Kuala Lumpur, Fleet Kota Bharu, Fleet Kuching
Philippines: Army Cebu, Fleet Davao, Fleet Manila
Thailand: Army Bangkok, Army Chiang Mai, Fleet Thammerat (East Coast)
Vietnam: Army Da Nang, Army Hanoi, F Saigon

Game Play Comments

The map has two dominant features - the mainland and the archipelago. On the
mainland, the three-way contest between Thailand, Vietnam and China means
that if two of these nations ally against the other, that nation is in
serious trouble. The seafaring nations face different challenges. Supply
centres, even home cities are separated by oceans, so fleets are more useful
than armies. Even for the mainland nations, sea power is essential for a solo
win.

Federation of Australia

Main religious affiliations: Roman Catholic, Anglican
Official language: English
Governmental system: Federal constitutional monarchy - democratic
Leaders: Prime Minister John Howard, Queen Elizabeth Windsor II
Founding Father: Captain James Cook

Australia is the only real Corner Power, and has a very defensible position.
Its only threat early in the game is an aggressive Filipino-Indonesian
alliance.

Peoples' Republic of China

Main religious affiliations: Non-religious, Chinese folk religions
Official language: Mandarin Chinese
Governmental system: Communism (moving toward "Market Leninism"Wink
Leaders: Prime Minister Li Peng, President Jian Zemin
Founding Father: Chairman Mao Zedong

China will be keen to advance its historical claims on Hong Kong, Taiwan and
the Spratly islands, but it will have to contend with other nations before it
can do so. China, like Thailand, faces the risk of losing its coastal centres
if it concentrates too heavily on a land war. Burma is China's "back door",
although Thailand has a greater claim on it.

Republic of Indonesia

Main religious affiliations: Islam
Official language: Bahasa Indonesia
Governmental system: Multiparty Republic - "Guided Democracy"
Leader: President Suharto
Founding Father: First president Sukarno

Indonesia plays a similar role to Russia in the original game. Defending
against attacks on two or three fronts is nearly impossible, but there are
great opportunities to attack or stab, eg against Thailand and Malaysia. It
is important for Indonesia to either develop a strong alliance with
Australia, or defeat that nation early in the game, since an Australian stab
could be devastating.

Federation of Malaysia

Main religious affiliations: Islam
Official language: Bahasa Malaysia
Governmental system: Multiparty Constitutional Monarchy
Leader: Prime Minister Dr. Mahatir, King Tuanku Jaafar Abdul Rahman (son of
the founder)
Founding Father: Tunku Abdul Rahman

Malaysia's position is in some ways similar to that of Germany's, with
excellent early opportunities, but a vulnerable central position. If Malaysia
can control the Malaysian sea, it will have good prospects throughout the
game.

Republic of the Philippines

Main religious affiliations: Roman Catholic
Official languages: Pilipino, English
Governmental system: Multiparty Republic - democratic
Leader: President Fidel Ramos
Founding father: Andres Bonafacio

The Philippines have a strong postion, with early opportunities in all
directions. It is also more defensible than Malaysia or Indonesia, having
adjacent home supply centres. An alliance with either Australia or China will
help secure solid growth.

Kingdom of Thailand

Main religious affiliations: Buddhism
Official language: Thai
Governmental system: Constitutional Monarchy: democratic
Leaders: Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai, King Bhumibol Adulyadej
Founding Father: Khun Bang Klang Thao

Thailand has better possibilities for mainland expansion than any other
nation, but like China, it faces the risk of having its coastal centres
overrun if it concentrates too heavily on a land war. For example, an
Indonesian-Malaysian alliance can exert strong pressure on Thammerat.
Thailand must also guard its "back door", Burma.

Socialist Republic of Vietnam

Main religious affiliations: Buddhism, folk religions
Official language: Vietnamese
Governmental system: One-party republic - socialist
Leaders: Prime Minister: Phan Van Khai, Chairman: Tran Duc Luong
Founding father: Ho Chi Minh

Vietnam perhaps has the weakest position in the game, situated between the other land powers and the archipelago. Diplomatic possibilites are strong however, since it can seek alliance with either Thailand or China, and also exert influence into the oceans

Notes
For PBEM games, the one-letter abbreviation for Malaysia has the letter L,
since M is reserved for Game Master.
The Philippines is simply named "Philippines" on the judge
Seventeen supply centres are required to win.
Only two supply centres can be taken in the first year without fear of
interference: East Timor by Australia and the Marianas Islands by The
Philippines.
The only foreign home supply centre adjacency is Thammerat-Kota Bharu.
Some of the territories (especially the seas) are fictitious or inaccurate.
They were designed to promote balanced and interesting play.

Dear All,

West Africa will be run by my brother until then. He has a very
demanding job, so I doubt he will have time to communicate very much;
but he has been briefed on our foreign policy, and that will continue
as is - unless events force a change.

RETREAT!

Laconian F laconicus sinus can retreat to koidaunas.
Elian F rhegium can retreat to elea or sicily.

Then we have builds, but nobody gets a build this year! Will this go down in history as the year winter never came? Or… If a winter month passes but no one builds a unit, then did it really happen? Or… Is a Christmas without presents still really a Christmas? Or… If Trout orders the same thing again for a 4th time in a row, should he be allowed to play? The philosophical undertones of the turn are immesurable, as these, and other ramblings are sure to fuel many a humanities course for centuries to come.

Retreats due, if we can, by tomorrow noon, and I’ll pop those out so we’re done by the weekend.
Enjoy!

Heya folks,

As publicly announced, the 4-way draw has been reproposed for your consideration. I think the Winter deadline of Sunday should provide enough discussion time so we'll set the 4-way English/French/Russian/Turkish draw vote deadline for Sunday, August 24th (23:59 PM GMT).

Cheers,

Dip White Wolf Move Update - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Folks,
Thanks for bearing with me through this ordeal. I am here in Georgia, we are frantically trying to squeeze 1300+ square feet of crap into less than 900 square feet of apartment, and I'm training madly for my new job.
I'm leaching off someone else's internet connection until mine is set up (I believe that's scheduled for Tuesday the 26th.) I promised the wife I'd get some of these boxes cleared out of the living room tonight, but I promise you all that I'll have time for game related emails and such beginning tomorrow afternoon. I intend to spend this weekend catching up on everything I've missed and getting all games I'm involved in back on track.
For those of you who are in or running games with my wife Rachael, I also promise I'll make her take a break within the next 24 hours and get caught up on her games as well.

Thanks again for being so patient with us!

News of the World

Max Planck Formulates Quantum Theory

Sigmund Freud Publishes The Interpretation of Dreams

First Nobel Prizes Awarded: A pacifist at heart and an inventor by nature, Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel was the inventor of dynamite. Not wanting to go down in history for creating such a deadly device, Nobel created a will that left the bulk of his fortune to the establishment of five prizes: physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace.

And speaking of peace…The leaders of Europe begin to test their boundaries and expand their interests. Minor skirmishes sprinkle the map of Eastern Eruope but in the West armies and fleets arrived safely at their destinations. The specific movement of forces was as follows:

Austria:
A Budapest - Trieste (*Bounce*)
F Trieste - Albania
A Vienna - Galicia (*Bounce*)

England:
F Edinburgh - North Sea
A Liverpool - Wales
F London - English Channel

France:
F Brest - Mid-Atlantic Ocean

F Sevastopol - Black Sea (*Bounce*)
F St Petersburg(sc) - Gulf of Bothnia

There are no retreats required, so the next due date is in five days.

Fall 1901 Movement Orders due Wednesday August 27th, 2008 at 1200 GMT

As always, if I have orders identified as “final” from all current players I will adjudicate as soon as possible and that will of course change the schedule.

DC-198 Summer Mayhem Spring 1906 Adjudication - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
All,
My schedule will be somewhat irregular for the next few months, so deadline times may be adjusted depending on which day they're due. I'll be working what's called a Panama schedule, in which I work twelve hour shifts in a pattern like this: Every other week I will work M/Tu, have W/Th off, and work F/Sat/Sun. On opposite weeks, I will do the opposite (M/Tu off, W/Th work, F/Sat/Sun off.) I'll be working nights for 12 weeks, and then I'll switch to days (and we'll have our regular 9pm deadline time back.)
In light of this, as well as the fact that I'm on the US East Coast (and in the Eastern Time Zone,) I'm going to set deadlines that I *should* be able to stick to, but the adjudications may come out rather later than usual. If this is the case, I will give you a *minimum* of 72 hours until the next deadline, in order to remain fair.
Thanks for being so understanding and patient. Without further ado, here's what you've all been waiting for!
