dc330: Fa39 Results! - dknemeyer   (Aug 17, 2010, 4:53 pm)
As the heat of summer turns into the colours of fall the events of the world continue apace:
Building off the recent smaller event in Britain, on July 2 the 1st World Science Fiction Convention opened in New York City
On August 2 Albert Einstein writes to U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt about using uranium to develop a super weapon called the "atomic bomb". This gets Roosevelt thinking...
On October 11 Einstein follows up with a letter urging the United States to rapidly develop the atomic bomb
With unprecedented defeats at Changsha and Guangxi tis year, the Japanese suffer setbacks that encourage the Chinese to begin preparations for a massive counter-attack..it remains to be seen how it goes.
And of course, Europe and the surrounding lands remain a blood-stained mess!
There are three retreats and only a modest number of builds and disbands for this year. Orders are due Thursday; you may submit conditional builds and disbands based on retreats!

dc330: Fa39 Orders due soon! - dknemeyer   (Aug 16, 2010, 4:11 pm)
Hi Folks,
We have just under 24 hours remaining to get in your final orders for
the upcoming season!
I expect to be adjudicating in a very timely fashion tomorrow, so look
for the files within a couple hours of the deadline.
Happy hunting!

dc330: Sp39 Results! - dknemeyer   (Aug 10, 2010, 9:54 pm)
As 1939 dawns and the war rages evermore vicious in Europe, events are happening around the world:
On January 1 the Hewlett-Packard company is founded in California, U.S.A. While this is a generally minor occurrence some commentators speculate these fellow tooling around in their garage just might profoundly change the world of technology.
On January 6 Otto Hahn is publicly confirmed to have achieved nuclear fission.
In February Japanese forces capture Hainan Island, a spot of strategic importance to the British high command
In Bombay India on March 3 a diminutive man named Mohandas Gandhi begins a fast protesting British rule in China. Occupied with their war effort the British government pays him no mind.
In May Japans and the Soviet Union engage in border clashes around the Khalka River. Despite their severe losses back in Europe at the hands of the Poles and Turks, here the Soviets reign victorious.
On May 1 a new comic book super hero named Batman debuts
Pan-American Airways begins trans-Atlantic mail service with the launch of Yankee Clipper from Port Washington New York on May 20
The Polish-Turkey draw fails. There are no retreats so we roll right on to the fall! Upcoming deadlines are at the end of this note.

dc330: Wi38 Maps - dknemeyer   (Aug 07, 2010, 2:08 pm)
Reports across Europe express confusion as there are apparently no
current maps that make clear the geo-political situation in our
current affair. Happily the Central Office has found some and attached
them. Wink
The very good news is I will be stable in one place the next few weeks
and be back on a more normal schedule including historical context
with adjudications.
Spring 1938 deadline is a mere 74 hours away!

There are two retreats (all neutral units are disbanded) and plenty of builds this year, as you will see below. Also, a Polish-Turkish draw has been proposed. Only YES votes will be counted affirmatively, and the vote must be unanimous to pass. Upcoming deadlines are at the end of this note.

Now, for some player press:

***
Italian Press:
Franco regrets to announce that his forces have had a vote and decided to disperse into the French countryside. The food and wine of France are infinitely superior to that of Spain, and so he will be joining them. While he is sorry to have abandoned the Spanish people to the reign of communists, who no doubt will start doing foolish things - like helping those in poverty - he is sure that Spain will eventually emerge from this darkness and the people will stand up for real action and then move forward. Something like that, at any rate. Franco's last message to his people - as best as this correspondent can gather - is: 'This cheese is all right, hey? Pass me another bottle of the red, Mola.'

***
Turkish Press:
November 10 of this year, our dear leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk died after struggling with cirrhosis. This tragedy has shaken the Turkish Republic to the core and will undoubtedly effect the military which he so selflessly loved. On the leader's deathbed, he emphasised how much he enjoyed his tough negotiations with Jozef Stalin after their Caucasian. It is because of this and not any anti-Polish sentiment that the Black Sea fleet of the proud Türk Deniz Kuvvetleri will support the Soviet cause. Istanbul wishes that Warsaw would view this action as purely symbolic of the friendship between these two great leaders and not as some declaration of war. We are a friend to all that share our borders.
Very soon we will be notifying the world of our change in government. We hope to have this change confirmed by Spring of next year and will share our new foreign policy at that time.

dc330: Fa38 - rules clarification - dknemeyer   (Aug 03, 2010, 9:21 am)
Folks,
I've gotten a question about DP's: now that there are two (and soon,
potentially less) neutrals left alive, do we need to adhere to the
rule of spending no more than 2 DP on influencing any one power? The
answer is YES: the basic rules around DP persist even if there is only
one neutral left. 2 DP maximum spend per neutral.
Less than 7 short hours before deadline! Tick, tick, tick...

Hi Everyone,
Please remember that your prelims are due in 21 hours. The game is
about to crank back up!
The final deadline for Fall 1938 orders is next Tuesday, August 3, at
5:00 PM ET. Please note I will be traveling next week with spotty
connectivity. I *will* adjudicate the Fall on Tuesday and the Winter
on Thursday per our schedule but expect to do so very late each night,
perhaps after midnight local time.
Good luck!

Hi David,
Yes, in my experience when Charles takes a trip it is fruitless to
send him emails, the account is quickly full. The good news is nobody
else is able to be negotiating with him either! Smile

Whatever else will I do with myself...

dc330: Sp38 Results! - dknemeyer   (Jul 15, 2010, 7:01 pm)
As winter thaws into spring many interesting things happened around the world, outside of the horrendous warfare sweeping Europe and its surrounding areas:
- On January 22 a little play called "Our Town" was staged in Princeton, New Jersey. Some people are saying it might end up being popular.
- In more popular culture press, on February 4 a "cell-animated feature", Snow White, is released in the United States.
- On May 5 the Vatican recognizes Franco's government in Spain; curious, as Franco and his army have virtually abandoned Spain itself
- Amidst the mobilization in Italy, Laszlo Biro patents a new invention, the ballpoint ben, on June 15
- While no World Cup was staged in 1938 thanks to the war, statistical experts ran a rudimentary simulation and determine that Italy would have defeated Hungary in the finals by a 4-2 mark
- Also in the world of sports, American boxer Joe Louis avenged his earlier loss to German Max Schmeling via a spectacular first round knockout at Yankee Stadium in New York City
- Finally, in Asia, Japan has continued to advance in China but there have been a lack of noteworthy engagements. However, in June, Chinese forces flooded the Yellow River to stall the Japanese advance. The Chinese people, aware of oppressive Japanese rule in conquered territories, hope this can be the beginning of turning the tide.
There is one Italian retreat (all neutral units are disbanded). Upcoming deadlines are at the end of this note.

***
Italian Press:
El Duce stood impassively as generals and various other flunkeys - that is how he thought of his subordinates - fluttered around the grand map of Europe laid out in marble, silver and gold on the floor below. Various elaborately carved pieces were being moved expressly as he, the Supreme Commander, had commanded. And the results of these movements would soon be known, written in fire and blood. Someone coughed behind him.

'Excellency, the German ambassador wishes to speak with you about the situation in Croatia, and the French are requesting a response to their peace proposal.'

Mussolini turned, his face showing his displeasure. He drew his pistol and aimed it at the unfortunate messenger's chest. The fellow turned white, and raised his hands in supplication. A shot rang out, and he slumped to the ground. The ruler of Italy stepped back, not wishing for icor to stain his fine leather boots. He waved those below to continue.

'Foolish fellow,' he thought. 'His own fault. They have all been warned never to interrupt me in the middle of a Diplomacy game.'***
Turkish Press:
Our leader, Ataturk, has heard the moans of the Persian people and has offered assistance to them out of solidarity with their plight. The good people of Iraq have extended their hand of brotherly support in hopes that Iraq and Iran can forever be at peace with one another. The Turkish republic stands for all downtrodden peoples and hopes to extend that generosity to other parts of the world and we challenge our "Western" friends to do the same for its subjugated and enslaved masses. As the weather warms in Anatolia, so too should the relations between us and the other powers.***Observer Press (strongly seconded by the GM!):

Hi Everyone,
Just writing to let you know I won't be getting to the adjudication
until a little later. I expect it to be posted well before I go to
bed. Orders are locked with what has been sent so far as no one
requested the six hour delay.
Also, I have another vacation request to accommodate. While I hate to
have such a large gap in the game I do accommodate vacations that let
me know in advance. Thus our Winter 1938 adjudication deadline will be
on ***Thursday July 29***, resuming our regular schedule thereafter.
In the event I get orders from everyone in advance I will adjudicate
immediately.
This season's results coming in a bit!

Gents,

The deadline for your Final Orders is in just under 24 hours. I have six sets of orders in-hand.

One thing that is conspicuous by its absence is player press. We have a dandy group of writers here as we've seen in past turns...would love to see a couple bits of press sneak in with final orders as well!

Good luck all in your final day of negotiating!

Gents,
though there is not too much reason for celebration based on this year's
results, there is in real life. I will be partying my birthday this
weekend and having guests. I hope to have recovered from the tremendous
hangover I expect to have by Sunday, and will then begin to send out
diplomatic notes again.
Enjoy your weekend!
