dc330: Wi37 Results! - dknemeyer   (Jul 08, 2010, 4:19 pm)
No historical flavour this adjudication, I'm afraid. A pile of work and crying baby preclude such indulgences. Getting stabbed in the Winterblitz didn't help matters much, either. Wink
Prelims for Spring 1937 are due in just under 24 hours! Other upcoming deadlines are at the end of this note.

dc330: Fa37 Results! - dknemeyer   (Jul 06, 2010, 9:39 pm)
Despite war raging across and beyond the entirety of Europe, this passive observer cannot help to feel that the most brutal and desperate fighting of all is occurring in the Spanish Civil War. On August 6 Falangist artillery bombarded Madrid, while on September 5th they seized the city of Llanes. Despite these initial shows of military might it all proved a ruse; the Nationalists decided to set off for France leaving their Republican adversaries to claim Madrid unopposed. Perhaps they wanted to participate in the autumn wine auctions?
Meanwhile, on November 5 35,000 Republican supporters were massacred near Leon, ostensibly as retribution for their taking Madrid.
Looking to the Far East, Japan is leveraging its modernization and mechanization program to extend beyond their diminutive size and terrorize it's neighbours - and enemies from afar. Consider:
- On August 26, during their invasion of Shanghai, they attack the car carrying the British ambassador and risk awakening the Lion
- During the audacious Battle of Pingxingguan on September 25, despite being defeated by the Communist Chinese National Revolutionary Army, the Japanese continued pressing forward and, by October 3, were advancing on Nanking. It was defeated on December 13. There, it is rumoured that a brutal series of civilian crimes were committed with an estimated 200,000 to 350,000 casualties. In correspondence back to his relatives, German businessman John Rabe tells stories of creating a "safe zone" from human biological testing by Japanese scientists, taking advantage of German-Japanese alliances to procure this unusual status. In this way he is able to provide safe harbour for Chinese women and children who he says are being raped by Japanese soldiers. Needless to say this incident exposes the ugliest sides of warfare
- On November 9 Shanghai falls to Japan
How is little Japan able to inflict such setbacks on impenetrable China? Might they be unstoppable?
I'm sorry to share we had our second mis-order: a player who submitted orders post-prelims had an invalid DP order, using a Dip Standard designation for a territory that is different in 1936. The territories are materially different in location and surrounding borders than Standard so this was a very cut-and-dried decision to ignore it as invalid. I will email this player privately to let them know the error. Please use this as a reminder to get in prelims and be careful about your territory designations!
There are two retreats (all neutral units are disbanded) and plenty of builds this year, as you will see below. Upcoming deadlines are at the end of this note.

British Press:
British Petroleum Announces "We'll Go Anywhere to Clean up this Oil!"Reuters (London) - British Petroleum has enlisted the British Royal Navy to aid in the oil giant's efforts to clean up the oil spill that has been dominating the headlines. "We are sooo sorry about spilling that oil.  BP is committed to cleaning up after itself, so we're going to clean up oil everywhere, even outside of the Gulf of Mexico and go into other 'gulfs' to make sure the world's ocean is rid of all oil spills." said Marty McSlick, BP's spokesperson. After sitting through it's "time-out", BP has decided to come out with renewed rigor to take charge of the clean-up efforts.  Exhausting all remaining boats for skimming the oil, BP contracted the British Royal Navy and asked them to start cleaning up oil wherever it can be found. "We've been told by reliable local sources that the Germans have been gushing out oil left and right in Denmark.  Ever since they set up camp here, it's been nothing but Deutsche Oil this Deutsche Oil that.  We'll get that cleaned up in a jiffy.  Not Jiffy Lube of course," said Rear Admiral Mr. Clean, referring to Jiffy Lube, the American Car Oil changing company. "I've been given this stupid broom, mop, and sponge and told to go to every nook and cranny to clean up this German oil." noted a weary British sailor.  Pointing at the scraggly coastline in Denmark as well as Skaggerak.  "I don't know *when* I'll be able to get back home..." In other news, the British government noted happily that the oil clean up gives all of the dejected English football fans something to do after England's abysmal showing in the World Cup.  "I hope the Germans stop to celebrate long enough to stop spilling this damn oil.  An oil can isn't something you should be holding while you're celebrating a Klose goal.  You'll end up spilling the oil everywhere!" exclaimed Hans Hansen, a Danish dock worker, watching with envy as the Danish team failed to make it out of group play.***
French Press:
Casablanca (Associated Press) - FOREIGN LEGION JOINS REGULAR FRENCH FORCES!

They said that the troops of the French Foreign Legion formerly stationed in Beirut would never see another French army in their lifetime, but they were wrong! After being evicted from the Lebanon by expansionist neo-Ottoman forces and traversing south through disputed Palestine, the Foreign Legion troops arrived in the Suez Canal Zone and caused a minor diplomatic incident which appears to have been smoothed over. British government representatives have stated that, while the Canal is jointly owned by both France and the United Kingdom, the arrival of the French army was entirely "unpermitted, unexpected and untolerated." French figures have said that it was all a big misunderstanding, and ruffled feathers now appear to be smoothed over as a joint Anglo-French fleet has spirited the army around the African cape and into (formerly) neutral Morocco, where they are joining Franco-Algerian troops in a continuing French bid to dominate western North Africa. The troops are expected to engage Italian forces in the continuing guerrilla war being engaged in Africa to determine the new borders of France's and Italy's African possessions. With France's vacation of the Orient, the Near East now appears to be under the sole dominion of the ungodly Muslim forces of the Second Ottoman Empire and their imperial challengers, the equally ungodly Communist forces of the Soviet Union.

GM Notes: I wonder if DP variants would benefit from knowing how *many* total DPs are spent on each neutral, but not what the orders are or by whom. Simply seeing the volume of spend tells an interesting story that might serve as useful intel for players trying to grope what is going on. Just an idle thought.

dc330: deadline changes - dknemeyer   (Jul 06, 2010, 3:50 pm)
Hi Everyone,
Germany has indicated he will not have orders in on time and thus
automatically activates his single eight hour extension for this game.
I will adjudicate as soon as I am able once his orders arrive,
sometime between now and 1am ET.
Please remember that you MAY thus continue submitting orders after the
deadline this turn. They will be accepted up until the moment
Germany's orders arrive, after which no further orders will be
processed. Also keep in mind that, according to my House Rules, now
that Germany has taken his extension he may NOT issue late orders in a
future turn even if another player has exercised their once per game
deadline! For him (and any other players who take their extension) the
next late provision of orders will result in an NMR.
Finally, I have had a request from a player who will be on vacation
next week to extend the adjudication. Per my house rules I will always
move deadlines when given good reason a full week in advance. My
preference is to keep our basic schedule but not delay the game by a
week. So, I'm going to propose the following upcoming deadlines:
Thursday July 8 - Winter 1937
Thursday July 15 - Spring 1938
Friday July 16 - Summer 1938 + Fall 1938 *prelims*
Tuesday July 20 - Fall 1938
If this does NOT work for anyone please let me know as soon as you
can. Otherwise, assume this is the schedule for the next couple of
weeks!
Adjudication will come quickly after I have the German order...
Dirk

dc330: Fa37 Prelims due in just under 23 hours! - dknemeyer   (Jul 01, 2010, 5:08 pm)
Hi Everyone,
A friendly reminder to get your prelims in before 5 PM ET Friday.
Already from someone's prelims I caught an error that would have been
potentially disastrous for the player. It is just good sense to get a
second set of eyes on your base orders, even if you know you will
likely change them! So take advantage of the prelims and get 'em in...
I am still traveling and struggling with my schedule at the moment. It
will not impact this game but may explain my being less communicative
than usual.
Take care,
Dirk

dc330: Sp37 Results! - dknemeyer   (Jun 29, 2010, 8:10 pm)
Let me open by thanking the players of this game for providing so much excellent press. I've never played in a game with this much players press and think it really adds to things. Do keep it up! Smile
I am afraid to share we've had our first misorder in this game. The British order F Sue - Egy(sc) is invalid because there is no British F Sue. If I discover a misorder in the prelims I will always go back to the person who placed the order for clarification; in this case the order came after the prelim deadline and thus was adjudicated as F Egy(sc) H. I am going to be extremely strict about this so do take note of this case and consider it for yourself in the future.
***The calamities of Europe aside, it is an exciting time here and in other parts of the world:
On January 3 the first science fiction convention was held in Leeds, England. While even the attendees were not entirely sanguine about what "science fiction" is there were certainly some parliamentary hard-liners wondering aloud why such frivolity is being supported during this critical moment of war.
On January 19 across the pond an eccentric young inventor named Howard Hughes set a record by flying from Los Angeles to New York City in 7 hours and 28 minutes. While air power has not played a significant role in the war to date the continued evolution of airborne technology could prove to be a difference-maker in sorting out the present hostilities.
The Soviet Union seems perpetually plunged into internal intrigue and turmoil, the latest series of flare-ups surrounding the spread of Trotskyism and reported plots to assassinate the great Stalin. Trials are held; suspects are executed.
In a victory for workers everywhere the United Automobile Workers Union is officially recognized in the United States on February 11.
In an exhibition of Anglo-Japanese cooperation the "Kamikaze" arrives at Croydon Airport in London on April 9. It is the first Japanese-built aircraft to fly to Europe.
On April 20 a cinefilm fire in an elementary school in Kilingi-Nomme, Estonia kills 17 students and injures 50. The event is blamed on the build-up of Polish and Soviet military in the region.
Guernica, Spain is bombed on April 26. While German bomb casings are produced as evidence of German involvement there is nothing in our current battle connecting the Luftwaffe to the intrigues of the Revolution-torn country.
As a stark counter-point to other recent air achievements the world is horrified as the German airship Hindenburg bursts into flames in Lakehurst, New Jersey. Secret bombing projects related to futuristic airships are immediately mothballed by a handful of governments.
On May 28th Neville Chamberlin becomes Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Touts are already bragging that Chamberlin is a diplomatic lion who will beguile and overwhelm all foreign statesmen he has cause to deal with, certain to fool them or bring them to their knees in the years ahead.
On July 7 the second Sino-Japanese War officially begins with the Battle of Lugou Bridge and effective Japanese invasion of China. Observers are ominously suggesting that, along with the current activity here in Europe, the Great War be re-named World War I and our current intrigues be dubbed World War II.
There are no retreats (all neutral units are disbanded; in this case just A Hun) so we roll right on to the fall! Upcoming deadlines are at the end of this note.

Press from Turkey:
The Great Mustafa Kemal Atatürk would like to thank the states of Europe for allowing Turkey to have a seat at this table of European affairs. We have a proud and storied history in the southeastern quadrant of this map and are grateful that it is being respected. We hope to continue positive relations with all of you and look forward to ways in which we can secularly modernize our state. Perhaps one day we could reach some form of European union with many of you in order to further integrate our common values. No doubt this could be achieved soon.
We would also like to congratulate the Dutch and German footballers for their athletic successes.
***
Press from USSR:

Tabriz - Iranian/Armenian Border Ranges
Local Nomads traveling the mountain ranges at the northern Iranian border report massive troop gatherings of Soviet armies building up forward defensive installations. So far, no official statement by the Kreml has been released, but rumors go, that the Kurdish minority in the area has called the USSR to protect the interests of their solcialist kurdish brethren, preventing aggressive moves of the Turkish nation into the east. Though the USSR has no intentions to openly offend Turkey, the movement of troops across the border as a preemptive act  to block any troop buil-up might cause a diplomatic crisis between the nations. The lack of stability with the recent Libanese uprisings against French occupation does its own to destabilize the region further - the hopefully we will not see the region erupt in full war soon...

dc330: Sp37 Deadline 25 hours away - dknemeyer   (Jun 28, 2010, 3:10 pm)
Hi Everyone,
A friendly reminder that the final deadline for our spring 1937 is a mere 25 hours away! One set of orders still missing; if I haven't confirmed receiving your orders you are the missing party...
I am traveling this week and don't yet know where I will be staying Tuesday night. There is a chance that I do not have connectivity to adjudicate tomorrow night. While I certainly do not expect that it is at least within the realm of possibility. If that were to happen I will adjudicate Wednesday before lunch my time.
Stepping on a plane in a few minutes, good luck to you all this season!

Dc330: USSR ...not to, but in Germany - Nitsch   (Jun 27, 2010, 5:51 pm)
Gentlemen,
I must gather all my remaining mental power to get these few lines written
down, cause we partied all evening on the streets after Germany ran over
England in the world cup. So you might excuse if the USSR embassy remained
closed for the whole day... *hic*

dc330: Sp37 Orders Deadline coming up, plus Origin... - dknemeyer   (Jun 26, 2010, 9:36 pm)
Hi Everyone,
The deadline for turning in your spring 1937 orders is coming up, due this Tuesday at 5 PM ET! This is the first time I have not gotten a complete set of prelims (and to this moment have only five sets of orders) so be sure you don't forget and miss the deadline with nothing submitted!
A few of you have asked me privately about the Dip tournament at Origins and I thought I would thus respond to everyone. Lots of detail here so feel free to ignore if you're not interested.
The tournament was designed as a three round tournament, with playing beginning at 6p each evening of Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
On Thursday it was veeeery slow to get started, not kicking off until about 7. The turnout was very low and thus there were only enough people for one board. Typically they play 3-4 boards and last year had 7. Unfortunately for me those people who came this year were all the "cream of the crop": along with me - who had never played face-to-face - there was another what I would call lesser player who had played quite a bit in college but not since for a long time, then four former champions of this tournament and one fellow they all said was very dangerous and expert. One of the former champions was Thomas Haver who won the 2008 North American Grand Prix (series of tourneys around the continent, highest weighted score wins); another was Chris Mazza, a 2-time DipCon winner and North American champion.
I drew France and allied with England (Haver) against Germany (the other player who, along with myself, seemed inferior to the rest). I opened to Pic and Bur with support and had Bel, Mun and Spa at the end of 1901. After that I largely stagnated and sat on 7 centers for a number of years. Haver grew more slowly but, since he had position on me starting in 1903, I was forced to allow him to grow in a better and more complete way. On the other side of the board it appeared a Juggernaut was on but in 1902 Turkey stabbed and by 1903 Russia was crippled. It then became immediately apparent that an AIT was on so Haver and I offered solace to Russia (Jason Seifert) and hurried to get the stalemate line in place. We did so despite AIT insisting we wouldn't be able to which was nice, from the standpoint of showing off some tactical chops.
The AIT was horribly imbalanced, with Italy (Robert Zahn) stuck on 4 centers all game until the veryvery end, Austria (Mazza) topping out at 5 or 6, and Turkey (Nate ?) behind them all with even more. As soon as the stalemate line was hit Turkey stabbed. However he did it at exactly the wrong moment and in the wrong way: a year before or after and I think it would have been lethal, or, if he had ordered Rum - Bud instead of Rum - Bul out of defensive paranoia he would have cracked Austria. So, Austria was *just* able to cover his remaining centers during the following year while completely vacating the territory around the stalemate line. We surged, they regressed and England and I simply waited to see who would prove strongest in order to execute a 3-way with them. It proved to be Austria but we were only able to get the vote after eliminating Italy who - we think - was voting it down. At the end it was just the three of us, along with a 2 center Turkey. England had 13 dots, I had 10 dots and thus Austria must have had 9.
My sharing in the draw was thanks in some real part to Haver's largesse. There were two moments where he could have - or I might even say should have! - stabbed me but he stayed the course. One of those two times I even ordered Eng - Lon for purely self-preservationist purposes but he blocked it. Wink Much of the game he had position on me and could have gone for the solo. I don't know that he would have made it, but he certainly could have gotten me out of a draw and increased his count.
Since it started so late on Thursday, and since everyone said that really late starts are typical, I came around 6:30 on Friday. Big mistake, as they had already started and I was frozen out! Needless to say I was hugely dejected. I had become really friendly with the core guys from the night before so hung around off-and-on for a couple of hours watching and serving as their conscience as they kept pulling me aside and telling me what they were thinking. That was kind of fun, the disappointment notwithstanding. At the time I left, around 11:30p, Seifert (now as Austria) had played a magnificent game and was positioned to certainly be part of the final result. Zahn (now England) likewise had played well and it was hard to see how he could be played out of the end. Haver was crippled but alive and with a chance to force into a draw as Russia, Turkey (new player) had just been stabbed by AR and his future was clearly terminal; France (new player) was sort of spinning with 5 or 6 centers and nowhere to go; Italy (Mazza) had just been stabbed by Austria and seemed done for; Germany was again the first one out, this time helmed by a hotshot traveling player from Chicago.
I had intended to play the final round tonight but decided that, since I would have no chance to win it all, I would get a start on going back home.
So, it was mixed: while I played well and had an excellent result in my only game, to be frozen out of the second day for being late was incredibly boneheaded. I'm really dejected about it.
For those of you who, like me, are children of the online era of diplomacy, playing face-to-face was actually a great time. I can't wait to do it again. However I do think it is dramatically harder than playing online. Once the adjudication is read everybody looks at the board for 30 seconds or a minute, then they immediately want to start diploming. There is not much time to get a sense for things and work thru the best moves without outside influence. I actually think this will be *good* for me longer term - quick, strong tactical assessment is one of my few strengths - but for the first time playing this way the lack of time to gather your thoughts and assess the situation definitely felt like a lot to deal with. Of course it wasn't helped by playing with such strong players. There were VERY few poor tactical choices, the game was almost entirely won and lost in the negotiating room. When people ordered they ordered very, very well, I daresay better than most if not all online games I've been a part of, top-to-bottom.
So, that was my little adventure! Smile

dc330: Wi36 Results! - dknemeyer   (Jun 24, 2010, 1:35 pm)
While fiercely embroiled in their continental power struggle, the
seven Great Powers took interest in the recent United States
presidential election: Franklin D. Roosevelt retained his position in
defeating challenger Alf Landon. Roosevelt, know for his focus and
investment on internal social and economic reform, remains unlikely to
involve his industrial powerhouse in European military matters. This
is certainly welcomed by those unlikely to curry favour with the
democratic United States while diminish hope for those who were
holding out hope they may have an ally in their ongoing intrigues.
Meanwhile there are rumours of significant potential German intrigue:
a Japanese diplomat was assassinated and discovered to have papers
relating to an "Anti-Comintern Pact" that would also involve Germany.
Whether the Germans are actually involved in such a gambit remains
unknown.
Over in the Soviet Union the Transcaucasian Socialist Federative
Soviet Republic was dissolved over December 10 and 11, thus converting
Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia as full Republics of the Soviet Union.
How or if this will impact the Soviet war effort remains to be seen.
At precisely the same time, on December 11 in Britain, Prince Albert,
the Duke of York, is crowned King, to reign as King George VI. some
observers are wary of how this might tilt carefully balanced
diplomatic agreements in the months ahead.
Prelims for Spring 1937 are due in 27 hours! Other upcoming deadlines
are at the end of this note.

your builds. I am still missing two sets.
As a reminder, I expect to be offline possibly until really late (I am
playing in a FTF Diplomacy tournament at Origins, ironically enough).

are in I will adjudicate. Otherwise, unless I am quickly eliminated,
it will be after midnight.

DC330 Fall 1936 Maps - charlesf   (Jun 23, 2010, 5:13 am)
Hi guys,

thought I might help out with that order map Dirk
has had difficulties with. You'll find it attached further below. And while at
it, I also added the results map since I much prefer my own custom-made unit
icons over RP's standard (and for a game set in the 1930s rather anachronistic)
icons.

Kudos to Dirk for his flavourful commentary! I have
to however take exception at the Berlin Summer Olympics not being a success!
Okay, making basketball an Olympic sport may have been misguided, but a whopping
49 nations participated, whereas at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics a
mere 37 countries took part.

Care to know how many medals your country won?
Here's a rundown:

Germany
    89
Italy
22
France
19
Britain
        14
Poland                 6
Turkey
         2

The USSR only participated at their first Olympics
in 1952 (too busy with purges?). The USA won 56 medals, Jesse Owens being the
darling of the Berlin crowds.

Next Olympics scheduled for Tokyo in 1940! Lets
hope we all then forget our various disputes and peacefully celebrate for a
couple of weeks!

Cheers,

Charles

dc330: Fa36 Results! - dknemeyer   (Jun 22, 2010, 5:16 pm)
It is a sad thing to see the smaller nations of Europe and the
surrounding areas being assimilated by greedy Great Powers pursuing
their dreams of conquest. Yet that is what we find in the fall of
1936. Consider:
- On August 26 the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty is signed to facilitate the
British pulling most of their force from the region. Less than two
months later the audacious British not only keep their current forces
intact but deploy even more of their navy to subjugate the rest of
Egypt!
- In September the Franco-Syrian Treaty of Independence is signed, yet
while the French vacate Syria they continue to tromp through the
region unabated, angering the residents of Palestine forced to
garrison them
- There are rumours that on October 25 a "Rome-Berlin Axis" was formed
but only time will tell if this is but a whisper of history or actual
fact
Finally, despite much hype and anticipation the Summer Olympics in
Berlin turned out to be a dud. Concerned about the militarization in
Europe few countries from overseas traveled to Germany for the affair,
and many European countries also did not attend due to security
concerns or the simple fact they had been recently plundered in the
Spring!
(FYI, these notes and any like them are based on comparing our game
with real history. There is NEVER implication of diplomatic agreements
between players, it is simply juxtaposition of real-world events with
our game!)
There are no retreats (all neutral units are disbanded) but plenty of
builds this year as you will see below. Upcoming deadlines are at the
end of this note.

A joint communique from the desks of Mussolini and Franco on the

It was with unease that we learnt of the overthrow and murder of the
duly elected ruler of Germany. While we understand that many were
unhappy with his policies - and the militaristic bent of his regime
was one that alarmed the peace-loving peoples of the La Mere Italiano
- democracy, freedom and the rule of law are not things to be
disgarded in fits of pique.
This is why the rightful rulers of the Italian Empire and Spain now
make this joint appeal to the new regime in Germany: commit to free

military force is not a legitimate way to settle disputes among

GM Notes: Using Realpolitik is a real learning process. Specifying
coasts is really touchy and I mis-adjudicated twice in trying to get
it correct. For some reason, perhaps because of all the re-
adjudications, the maps I saved the final time saved as blank files.
While I am able to get the final map thanks to the .dpy file the
Orders map is lost to history. That is the map with the arrows
pointing to show the moves. My apologies, I will get better at this
each time.
It is certainly interesting to see the games through the eyes of the
GM. Some players change their orders quite a bit over the course of
the diplome period, and I can almost *feel* the ebb and flow of
negotiations based on the changes people make. It is particularly
exciting to watch the situation change, as it looks like things are
going to tilt one way but one or more orders change and the outcome is
very much different. For those of you who have not GM'ed I would
recommend it. Of course, typically I am only seeing the game through
my own eyes and lens but here I get a sense of how other players
think, act and respond during the intermissions. At this point I would
like to try and keep one game going as a GM on a continual basis and
it should be interesting to compare how lots of different people play
over time.

Does Italian success in that area free multiple Italian armies, and a poison gas carrying air force, for operations in other areas? Wink

Since the end of the Great War Europe has been a relatively quiet
continent. As Italian forces in recent weeks gained control of large
parts of Africa - Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and the newly-formed Italian
East Africa - Europe remained quiet. Even rumours that the German
Wehrmacht was going to audaciously re-occupy the Rheinland proved much
ado about nothing.

Alas, it was but the calm before the storm.

To the chagrin of peace-loving people's everywhere, seven Great Powers
released their war machines in a near-simultaneous display of
terrifying force that must certainly be the result of copious
diplomatic negotiation. The fair citizenry of Europe is left to hope
that the signs of warfare all around them prove short-lived.

Thus begins our version of World War 2!

As no player retreats were necessary I have processed the Spring and

Berlin (William Shirer) - NAZI REGIME TOPPLED! PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT
REINSTATES DEMOCRATIC CONSTITUTION

A conspiracy of senior civil servants and Wehrmacht officers has led
to the swift toppling of Mr. Hitler's government. Yesterday, the most
senior Nazi figures were arrested at a business lunch at the
Chancellory. Following a swift trial, the former Austrian corporal was
sentenced to death on high treason charges, the sentence being
reportedly carried later on in the day. Konrad Adenauer, the former
mayor of Cologne and a leading centrist politician, has set up a
provisional government and reinstated the 1919 constitution. In his
first radio broadcast as Reichschancellor, he announced the outlawing
of the NSdAP and all affiliated organisations, the release of all
political prisoners, repeal of numerous Nazi decrees and laws
incompatible with the 1919 constitution and set May 1 as the date for
free and fair Reichstag elections. Adressing the wider international
community, Mr. Adenauer expressed his hopes that Europe would once
again embrace the "spirit of Locarno" and help another overcome the as
yet dire economic repersussions of the 1929 crash. In his closing
remarks, the new Reichschancellor invited the "youth of the world" to
the upcoming Berlin Summer Olympics and promised a hearty welcome to
all foreign guests, noting how important it was to his government and
the German people for the world to witness the new Germany after Mr.
Hitler's fortunately shortlived barbarism and usurpation of power.

A statement from the Italian government:

The Italian peninsula has never housed an aggressor. The pre-eminent
counterexample that people often point to, the Roman Empire, was
brought into being purely for defensive purposes. As such, any troop

dc330: Sp36 Results! - dknemeyer   (Jun 15, 2010, 10:27 pm)
As no player retreats were necessary I have processed the Spring and
Summer turns both: welcome to Fall 1936! Upcoming deadlines are at the
end of this note.

Hi Everyone,
I have a complete set of orders but your last chance to change is
coming up in a mere six-and-a-half hours!
As I mentioned last week I am on a business trip. The Internet has
been extremely dicey here but working at times so I expect to be able
to get everything out tonight. Between likely not getting back until
well after the deadline, and this being my first adjudication, it may
come later than I would like. However I will persevere tonight to
figure it out one way or the other, cooperating Internet connection or
not!
"See" you soon...

Yep, your verbalisation of the map was accurate, Dirk. I trust these spatial
relationships are now burnt into your long-term memory! Smile
Each turn I will create a new sheet in an Excel workbook showing the
expenditures of all. In the past Charles has chosen not to share this in
his games, and as a player I've found this to be terribly disappointing.
Not quite true. I just won't publish DP allocations if any player objects to
this. Why? Because I wouldn't want any player to ever hold back in how they
allocate their DPs based on the knowledge that these would later later be
published.
Now, that probably wouldn't be a concern for most players, but for some it
may. Hence the way I as GM handle this.
Cheers,
Charles

dc330: Prelims are in! - dknemeyer   (Jun 11, 2010, 3:46 pm)
Hi Everyone,
Thanks to all seven players for getting prelims in before this first
adjudication! We're off to an excellent start!
I have two points I want to make/clarify about the game before the
first adjudication happens next week...
First, the first time I played with this basic map (a 1926 variant) I
played as Britain and so misunderstood the rules for sailing around
Africa that I traded away my Middle East interests and practically
limped west in the Mediterranean, away from that front. I always
promised myself if I were to GM one of these variants I would be very
explicit about how it works so no one else suffers from that same
misinterpretation. In the other preparations it slipped my mind and
thus falls into the list of loose ends I am now tying up:
There are two sea spaces south of and with direct canal access into
the Suez Canal (Sue). These are ATL and ARA. ATL completely wraps
around Africa and is directly adjacent to all of the following
territories:
Egy(sc),Gib, Ire, Mor, NWA, Sue, SWA
On the other hand, ARA provides access to the underbelly of the middle
East and is adjacent to the following territories:
ATL, Irn(sc), Irq, Kuw, Pal(sc), SAr, Sue
Charles, as the map maker please correct any errors my eye is making.
The second thing I want to make sure you are all aware of is that
AFTER the game is completely finished I will be making public the DP
expenditures of all players. Each turn I will create a new sheet in an
Excel workbook showing the expenditures of all. In the past Charles
has chosen not to share this in his games, and as a player I've found
this to be terribly disappointing. So now that I am the GM and drunk
with power I will reverse the policy and make the data available to
all once the guns have fallen silent.
If you have any questions about either of these things please let me
know. Have a nice weekend, it is certainly the calm before the storm...
Dirk

A note - DrSwordopolis   (Jun 11, 2010, 12:36 am)
Hey there,

Since now a couple players have mentioned it to me, I'm going to make my answer to their question public just to clear things up. Yes, I realized my diplomatic output as disappeared after a couple days of diplomatic frenzy at game start. No, that doesn't mean I'm ignoring you in favour of talking only to your neighbours on how to carve you up! I've simply had all my Diplomacy energy taken up instead by a different game I was playing, in a very unique situation, but that obligation is now gone and I can cease my DC330-related procrastination in favour of once again strengthening my friendship with the other nations of Europe.

All of you can expect to hear from me individually in the near future.

dc330: Sp36 Prelims due in ~20 hours! - dknemeyer   (Jun 10, 2010, 8:29 pm)
Hi Everyone,
A friendly reminder that your preliminary orders are due by tomorrow
(Friday), 5 PM ET. If you send in prelims I will review them fully and
ask for clarification of any ambiguities or seeming mistakes. Any
orders sent after that will be processed literally and precisely, even
if seemingly "obvious"! So if you don't take advantage of the prelims
be extra sure to review your final orders carefully!
Your full Spring 1936 order deadline is Tuesday June 15, 5 PM ET.
Please be aware I will be on a business trip next week, so my first
adjudication may not be as quick as should prove typical. The hotel
Internet allowing I will certainly be processing the orders before bed
that day.
Have a nice weekend everyone.

Fwd: Greetings from Californian Britian - sunchung   (Jun 09, 2010, 11:33 am)
* Note - I sent this to the wrong email alias earlier this week.  Apologies!  It is posted on the DC site, but I'm not too sure everyone has read the community portion there recently.

Below is my introduction.

Hello,

Greetings - I look forward to playing with everyone in this game.  A bit about my Diplomacy history.  I just started playing Diplomacy again after about a +7 year hiatus.  Back when I did play in my first go around, it was off of the email newsgroup called Cat23.  It's since morphed, I believe, into www.diplomaticcorp.com.  A friend of mine who used to also play on Cat23 forwarded an invite for the Winterblitz 2010 and that's how I got re-acquainted with Diplomacy and the DC site.  I played my first game earlier this year, and was fortunate enough to play in a game with our GM Dirk.  It was this connection that has brought me to this game.  I've never played a variant of Diplomacy other than Colonial Diplomacy and Gunboat, so I look forward to this game.  I love the idea of the connected map plus the balanced nature of the powers and struggles.  And I look forward to having a very dynamic map where each player needs to contact every other player - not just be focused on a particular theater.  To be frank, the complexity of this variant both excite me and worry me - I hope I have the intellectual horsepower to keep up with all of the moving parts!

A bit about me.  I'm in the San Francisco bay area with two young kids, so hopefully they won't tire me out too much (and allow me to think straight!).  I don't know any of the other players other than our GM.  Just one last note of thanks to Charles for creating this variant and Dirk for hosting the game.  I've shied away from other Diplomacy sites that use judges as I think they tend to attract more casual players that are less committed to the game.  Thanks you for the volunteer work and service to the DC community/players.
