DC176 / DC201 - Monday Aug 26 deadline - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Ahum,

it was pointed out to me that I must be using some kind of obscure calendaring system since the Gregorian calendar which is most widely used nowadays has Aug 26 being a Tuesday. Now I could argue that the given date is correct and that the Monday is actually based on the western hemisphere whereas the Aug 26 date is based on the Eastern hemisphere. Factually correct but it doesn't make much sense (true, I have been accused of that myself more than once). More so because I had also stated the time of 23:00 GMT.

So to make it clear for everyone, the deadline will be Tuesday, Aug 26 at 23:00 GMT. Gregorian calendar. And all hemispheres. On Earth at least. For other celestial bodies please consult your local stargazer.

Aha, you find out where Trout is going then?

It would indeed matter but not as much as when you would be travelling from, say, one astral body to another.
Or say, the fourth dimension. But in that case it is important to understand that the time of the deadline would change only for the traveller but not for anyone else.
Hope that makes it all crystal clear.

DC176 - Fall 1909 Adjudication - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Fall 1909:
England's army in Wales is slaughtered by the merciless French. It did manage to stay put in London but could not regain Edinburg.
Austria tries to expand North and is successful in taking warsaw but is stopped by the Russians from occupying Ukraine.
This left the backdoor open to the Italians though who thankfully rush in to take Sevastopol. But whether this is any comfort to the Italians who lost their home to the Austrians this year?!
More on Russia: the loss of Warsaw has cut their empire in two although they managed to take Norway and Belgium away from the French. Only St Petersburg and Moscow remain of its original home SCs. Will it follow the fate of Italy?
France seems to be doing well but it has not yet been able to reap many benefits from its fight against England.

No retreats for Autumn this year.
Adjustments are shown below.
Deadline for adjustments is Wednesday, Aug 27 at 23:00 GMT.

DC176 Winter 1909 Adjustments - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Winter 1909: not a very remarkable winter.
Just a couple of observations:
- In France a large in-stream of scrap iron in combination with a drop in demand, has caused the market prices of it to drop sharply;
- In Austria the job market has improved considerably now that troops are being deployed further away from home, with more to come;
- In St Petersburg, Russia, to be more precise on its South Coast, a new army has been sighted.
Winter 1909 adjustments attached below.

Brings us to Spring 1910.
Deadline for orders is Monday, Sep 1 at 23:00 GMT. As this is also US Labor Day, make sure that you get your orders in before you leave for a long weekend away.

DC176 - Spring 1910 - Adjudication - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Spring 1910:
The Austrian army in Bulgaria was cornered by Italian forces; no survivors were reported. Further Austria/Italian skirmishes were reported in Greece resulting in a stand-off;
Austrian forces in Warsaw tried to move into Livonia but was bounced by Russian troops and then found the way back to Warsaw cut. It can now either disband or move to Prussia.
Austria was more successful in Rumania where it managed to stop the invasion of the Italian troops from Sevastopol. And in Munich where the departure of the Russian army was welcomed by the Austrian troops; no casualties reported.
Burgundy also reported a stand-off; here it was Russian and French troops that had clashed. The Russians did manage however to occupy Sweden and as reported earlier to retake Warsaw.
The French entered Edinburgh due to brute force despite a brave English attempt to avoid this. As a result the English fleet is now controlling the North Sea.

DC176 - Fall 1910 deadline move - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Dear players,

I stand accused of shortening the time between the deadlines.
Yeah, booh.
I shamefully admit that this has been the case.
Okay, you can now stop throwing things at me.

Although that practice made for good fun for anyone with just (this game of) Dip at their hands,
I do realize there aren't that many for which this is true.
So rather than have you all struggle to meet the deadlines, making this a chore rather than fun,
and to avoid ending up with a realtime Dip game, I will now pledge to schedule all major season
(Spring, Fall) deadlines with at least a week in between.

This is of immediate effect and thus the Fall 1910 deadline will move to Monday, Sep 9.

DC176 - Fall 1910 Adjudication - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Fall 1910: this season is dominated by the fighting between Austria
and Italy/Russia.
Russia and Austria have a stand-off in Livonia, but Austria prevails in Berlin.
Austria convoyed the Napolitan Guard to Greece only to find the
Italians there; it successfully defended its Austrian dominance.
More fighting between Italy and Austria in Rumania: again it's the
Austrians that determine the outcome and take Bulgary from the
Italians.
England and France fight over Edinburgh but the French manage to hold
their positions. France tries to enter Belgium but Russian forces stop
them at the Picardy border.

And this brings us to Autumn 1910 retreats for Russia and Italy.

DC176 - Autumn 1910 adjudication - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Autumn 1910 retreats:
- Italian army Bulgaria goes to Constantinople
- Russian army in Berlin goes to Kiel.

1910:
Another successful year for the Austrians. Two more SCs added to its empire.
Russia, no doubt to its dismay, was entitled to a build but had nowhere left to do so.
England is hanging one with just one SC and will have to remove one of its units.
France and Italy are going steady.

Ownership:
Austria: Berlin, Budapest, Bulgaria, Greece, Munich, Naples, Rome, Rumania, Serbia, Trieste, Tunis, Venice, Vienna.
England: London.
France: Brest, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Marseilles, Paris, Portugal, Spain.
Italy: Ankara, Constantinople, Sevastopol, Smyrna.
Russia: Belgium, Denmark, Holland, Kiel, Moscow, Norway, St Petersburg, Sweden, Warsaw.

Winter 1910 adjustments:
Austria: Supp 13 Unit 11 Build 2
England: Supp 1 Unit 2 Remove 1
France: Supp 7 Unit 7 Build 0
Italy: Supp 4 Unit 4 Build 0
Russia: Supp 9 Unit 8 Build 0

DC176 - Autumn 1910 adjudication - supplemental - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
It was pointed to me - I won't mention any names - that I had misrepresented the facts when I said that Austria had gained 2 SCs and Russia 1 SC.
Both Austria and Russia had lost one unit during the year 1910, so effectively since 1909 Austria gained just a measly 1 SC (hardly worth mentioning) and Russia none.
But due to no Home SC free to build, Russia will have one unit less to command than in 1909.

DC176 - Winter 1910 adjustments - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Winter 1910 saw the following builds in Austria: F Trieste and A Budapest.
At the same time England found that it could no longer support its A Yorkshire.

And thus we have arrived at Spring 1911.
Spring, typically the time of opportunities and growth.
We wonder what this year will bring:
Will England for example see this year's Winter?
Or has France set out to destroy the Ol' Brits?
Will Italy be able to withstand the pressure from Austria around the Black Sea?
Will Russia maintain its grip on its long supply lines with an Austrian army advancing north?

Deadline for Spring 1911 is Monday Sep 15 at 23:00 GMT.

Spring 1911:
Armies, and fleet, are on the move across Europe. Surprisingly most Powers have managed to avoid eachother so few casualties were reported.
Except for the two biggest powers, Austria and Russia, who have clashed almost everywhere.
England has not yet accepted the loss of its army in Yorkshire last Winter and ordered its NTH fleet to support the phantom army in Yorkshire to Edinburgh.

Retreats are due this Summer.

Two retreats for Summer 1911.

Belgium can consider Holland whereas Warsaw has only Silesia to retreat to. Or else disband the army.

After a farewell to England, Europe has again changed its internal borders at the beginning of Spring 1912.
1912 will be an interesting year with an Italian power that can't build new units, a French power that is almost driven out of its home country, and French and Austrian powers sharing much of middle and western Europe.

Deadline for Spring 1912 orders is Monday, Sep 29 at 23:00 GMT.

DC176 - Spring 1912 Adjudication - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Spring 1912:

No orders from Russia for this Spring. Perhaps the Russian messenger was caught behind enemy lines now that the Austrians have severed the troops in Ruhr from the rest of the Russians (Dean, please contact me asap. Didn't hear from you on any of my reminders).
Without any orders the Russian army in Galicia is at a loss and caught between Austrian forces with nowhere left to go; and thus perishes. Now that the Russian troops left Holland, France takes its chances and enters. While at the same time the French fleet enters the Mediterranean. In the area around Ruhr the troops of France, Russia and Austria play an intriguing game. The Austrian army, while strengthening its grip on central Europe, is forced out of Bulgaria by the Italian fleet from Constantinople. And the Italians seem to be consolidating around the countries at the Black Sea.
One retreat for Summer 1912. See below.

DC176 - Fall 1912 Adjudication - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Fall 1912: another NMR from Russia. It is its second consecutive NMR (and no one has heard from Dean since Sep 24 Winter 1911 orders - nor in the other game he's playing), so we have to assume Dean won't be returning.

After this sad news, something more cheerful:
The Austrians order their Piedmont army to the Marseillan border to support the French but find no one there; rumor has it that travel brochures of North Africa were found by local peasants in a deserted army base in Gascony. In the East the Austrian fleet takes an abandoned Smyrna. And Russia had to disband its army in Warsaw due to a supported Austrian attack.
The French fleet entered Norway without meeting any resistance. And their army in Holland gives it a shot in Kiel but without any luck.
The Italians managed to hold their position in Bulgaria as well as those on former Russian territory.

Fall 1912 adjudication:

Austria:
F Aegean Sea - Smyrna
A Bohemia Supports A Munich
A Budapest - Rumania
A Galicia Supports A Silesia - Warsaw
F Ionian Sea - Tyrrhenian Sea (*Bounce*)
A Kiel Supports A Munich (*Cut*)
A Munich Supports A Kiel
A Piedmont Supports A Gascony - Marseilles (*Void*)
A Prussia Supports A Silesia - Warsaw
A Rumania - Ukraine
A Silesia - Warsaw
F Tunis - Western Mediterranean (*Fails*)
A Tyrolia Supports A Munich
A Vienna - Trieste

France:
A Burgundy Supports A Picardy - Belgium
A Gascony - North Africa
A Holland - Kiel (*Fails*)
F Mid-Atlantic Ocean Convoys A Gascony - North Africa
F North Sea Supports F Norwegian Sea - Norway
F Norwegian Sea - Norway

F Western Mediterranean - Tyrrhenian Sea (*Bounce*)

Italy:
F Ankara Supports F Bulgaria(ec) - Constantinople
F Black Sea Convoys A Sevastopol - Bulgaria
F Bulgaria(ec) - Constantinople
A Sevastopol - Bulgaria

Russia:
A Denmark, no move received
A Livonia, no move received
A Ruhr, no move received
A St Petersburg, no move received
A Warsaw, no move received (*Disbanded*)

No retreats, so we have arrived at Winter.

Ownership:
Austria: Berlin, Budapest, Greece, Kiel, Munich, Naples, Rome,
Rumania, Serbia, Smyrna, Trieste, Tunis, Venice,
Vienna, Warsaw.
France: Belgium, Brest, Edinburgh, Holland, Liverpool,
London, Marseilles, Norway, Paris, Portugal, Spain.
Italy: Ankara, Bulgaria, Constantinople, Moscow, Sevastopol.

Adjustments:
Austria: Supp 15 Unit 14 Build 1
France: Supp 11 Unit 9 Build 2
Italy: Supp 5 Unit 4 Build 0 (still no Home SCs to build in)
Russia: Supp 3 Unit 4 Remove 1

A French - Austrian Draw has been proposed. Voting for this proposal should have been submitted before Spring 1913 adjudication.
First however there is Winter 1912. Deadline is Wednesday Oct 8 at 23:00 GMT.

But before we get to that I'd like to ask you, the remaining 3 players, what should we do with Russia?
It is a shame that Dean is no longer there to play as it may have such an impact on the outcome of the game.
- Should I go looking for a player to step in for Russia? (it will be tough to find a player for Russia at this stage)
- Or have all units go into Civil disorder? (auto-disband for Winter will then be RUH)
I would like to know before we play Winter 1912.
So please let me know asap.

Frank
