I just realized that I hadn't submitted any ESG to this game. So now a half a year later I'll try to recall what happened during the game. Please forgive me if my memory fails me and I'm incorrect on any of this.
From Italy's Point of view:
1901:
I made an agreement with Russia (DaveE) to take out Austria. France approached me with an agreement to DMZ the Med for three years. This worked well with my plan of an Austrian invasion. The key move this year was how I negotiated with Austria. At first asked him if he would give his permission to move my army in Venice into Tyrolia to head towards Warsaw. He refused which is what I anticipated and wanted. So I thanked him for his time and said that I would look into "alternative plans." Then I ordered that move anyway. I figured that based on what I had said he wouldn't expect my move and move his army in Vienna to bounce me in Tyrolia. It worked and with Russia's help I captured Trieste in the fall of that year.
Another event that took place in this year Involved Turkey and Austria. Turkey approached me offering to support me into Greece. I didn't trust him so I said yes but I ordered my fleet into Tunis instead to get the for sure SC. I'm glad I did because he had also made the same offer to Austria and we would of bounce had I trusted him. This early bit of treachery on Turkey's part helped to make him the next target of the Russian/Italy alliance.
1902:
During this year I helped my Russian Ally capture Vienna and Budapest. This left Austria with only one sc; Greece. He disbanded his navy near Greece and kept his army in Bohemia which was a very unexpected move on his part.
Also during this year I made my first attack on Turkey in which I knocked his army out of Serbia.
1903:
My ally and I offered Austria that we would support him into Munich and keep him there the rest of the game so that he would get a survival on his statistics and not an elimination. He refused and in the Fall of this year he attacked me in Tyrolia with German support as one final punch to his enemy. I don't blame him because I was pretty ruthless towards Austria.
As for the war with Turkey I took Greece and got a fleet all the way to the Turkish coast.
Also during the fall of this year France entered North Africa with a fleet. This didn't violate our DMZ but it made his intentions clear: Our Treaty was over!
1904:
My Fleets started to engage the French fleets in the Med and they were able to hold onto Tunis against a French Assault.
Russia and I finished off the Turks and I started moving north towards Germany with whom my Ally had already started fighting a couple turns before. I took Munich and my Ally took Kiev and Berlin. France also Back-stabbed Germany his year and this cause the Germans to be down to a single unit.
1905:
On this final year I had France approach me and ask if I would attack Russia with him. This lead to a game changing decision. I had to think long and hard about this decision: These were the three questions that were going through my head during this decision:
1: Is Russia going to stab me for the solo??? I though that there was a possibility of this but Russia had shown that he was a very honest player the whole game so I didn't think the odds of this were very high.
2: Is France just trying to turn me against my ally??? I thought that this is what was happening likely since he would have love to see me and Russia fighting.
3: If I help France will he stab me like he did Germany? After the stab of Germany by France I had a very low opinion of him since he had betrayed his ally right when his ally needed him the most.
I ended up sticking with Russia because I felt that the odds of a Russian Stab were lower then the odds of a possibly French stab in the future. Plus Russia was so powerful I didn't think that France and Me could have beaten him anyway. So decided to stay with my ally and hope for the best.
I ask my ally if I could put in a request in the for a 2-way draw at the end of 1905 since the French, seeing that victory was impossible since they were being attacked by two powers, would just surrender now instead of drawing the game out. Well the vote never got a chance to be passed. Russia did stab me and won solo!
I guess you could say that I made the wrong decision at the end of the game. Personally I still think I made the right decision because I had a good chance at a 2-way draw and should I be stabbed, my ally would win which ended up happening and is something he definitely deserved. He played really well and I'm glad for him that he got the solo.
In short: This was an awesome game and I had tons of fun!
I want to thank Mike for GMing this game and wish everyone involved this game best of luck in their future Diplomacy adventures.
P.S. I just looked back for a final spell-check and realized how much I wrote! This was supposed to be an End-Game-Statement but it turn out more like a End-Game-History of Italy. I apologize for my long windedness. ops:[Reply] |

dc157 Fall 1908 Adjudication - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
Well this fall saw some bold moves by England and France (one that suceeded). The fall also saw some entrenched lines formed. It seems despite some unusual moves by France, neither he nor Italy can move the lines. Also with France, but with Austria this time, and over German soil, we see Munich continue to be a battleground, with no winner. Hmmm......
*****************************************************************************************************
Winter 1908 Builds/Removals due Monday September 1st by 4pm EST (2100GMT) If I get them both before then and get a chance to adjudicate I will do so earlier.
*****************************************************************************************************
Austria had one retreat which only had disband or retreat to Finland, so I made the move to Finland.
I now need 1 removal from Austria, and 1 build from England.
****************
Almost forgot!!! I will need orders from EVERYONE for this winter. France and Italy just need to vote!
We have two End Game Proposals to vote on.
1. Three way draw to include: Austria, England, and Italy.
2. Four way draw to include: Austria, England, France, and Italy.
Any no votes or a NMR (which will be a no vote) will fail a EGP. Please turn in your votes with your winter orders, even if you do not have orders to give.

Ok,
Spring move 1908 due date has come and gone, with barely a word from anyone......
Now I see that I have build orders for Russia dated the 18th in my inbox, or in other words before the Winter adjudication. Now I am certain I looked carefully, and I can't explain why I have them now, but since no one except Italy sent orders for the Spring, I will reset the Spring due date with the corrected Russian builds.
I will also add the End Game Proposal offered by Hamish. Please vote yes or no on a DIAS (Draw to Include All Survivors).

DC176 - Fall 1909 Adjudication - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
Fall 1909:
England's army in Wales is slaughtered by the merciless French. It did manage to stay put in London but could not regain Edinburg.
Austria tries to expand North and is successful in taking warsaw but is stopped by the Russians from occupying Ukraine.
This left the backdoor open to the Italians though who thankfully rush in to take Sevastopol. But whether this is any comfort to the Italians who lost their home to the Austrians this year?!
More on Russia: the loss of Warsaw has cut their empire in two although they managed to take Norway and Belgium away from the French. Only St Petersburg and Moscow remain of its original home SCs. Will it follow the fate of Italy?
France seems to be doing well but it has not yet been able to reap many benefits from its fight against England.

DC201 - Fall 952 Adjudication - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
Fall 952:
Again fires at the horizon: this time it is the beautiful city of Beograd. Slavs set it ablaze before the advancing Romans could take anything of value. What a sad ending for this city in the heart of Balkans. The fire will have consumed the whole city by the end of Autumn.
The Arab Caliphates tried to hold on to their assets in Palermo and Tarsus against the onslaught from the Romans but had to give in in the end. Rumors have been heard about a genocide!
France has been under fire from the Burgundese all throughout the French empire. Verdun, Champagne, Tours, Paris, Auvergne and Koln never saw so much fighting in their history as this Fall. Some have spotted the occasional Dane in Paris. Odd place to get lost, won't you say?
The Swedes seem to be confused: their fleet in Birka was told to move to the Baltic Sea but Swedish Headquarters forgot to inform the army in Goteborg who found the place empty when their support arrived. And the Ruthenian army is supporting the Slavs from Przemysl to Breslau but the Slavs are supporting their cousins in neighboring Kjonugard.
Danmark is not very lucky either: its Fleet in Memel and its army in Jorvik have nowhere to retreat to and are slaughtered by respectively the Norse and the Swedes.
Retreats for Autumn 952 are listed below.
Deadline for retreats is Wednesday Aug 27 at 23:00 GMT.

Dc141 EOG Statement: Turkey - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
A quick statement
My plan for this game was simple. I just wanted to run a juggernaut across the board. I approached Russia with this idea and he was keen so we put the wheels in action and started.
Both Russia and I moved against Austria quickly and with Austria attackign Italy, Austria fell quickly.
France was moving on Italy, so my plan was to support Benjy as much as I could and when that no longer worked I would claim the remainder of the boot for myself hoping to get my fleets into position to break the med stalemate as soon as possible. Andres was losing the battle in the north, having lost StP early to england and we knew we would have to break through in germany or it would be lost. We befriended the german and get supporting him against an obvious france - england alliance. I kept contact with France and Andres kept contact with Wngland to try and convince them to break their alliance but also keep the communication flowing between him and myself.
I kept voting down the early draw proposals wanting to get all my fleets lined up along Italy becaise it looked pretty and I was hoping for a slip up from Alan. Alas Alan abandonde the TYR sea (a smart move) and because his fleet was not disbanded - he could easily force a stalemate line.
It was at this point, that Andres moved south fearing a stab (and cost himself a return to Vienna by boucing me back in!)... we quickly talked and I told Andres that I had considered the solo but felt that it was impossible as I could not get Munich and Berlin (numbers 17 and 1 fast enough before france-england could deny them to me. I then propose a 4 way draw which someone else voted down (My guess was England, possibly seeing if he could get russia and i to fight) and then the second one past.

PRESS:
Saxons to All: I will go ahead and do my EGS now since it seems to be a given that I will be next out. Thanks to Stephen for running this game for us.
My EGS is simple I fear: I was not aware that a 'gunboat' style game allowed press and thus essentially diplomacy. I was quite irritated by that because I did not realize it and feel like it cost me early in the game because I didn't diplome with others via press. My early moves that ultimately cost me the game were made under the assumption that press did not exist and I needed to show a willingness to work with neighbors. Thus I did not cause early bounces to try and show that I didn't want to fight; however, I did no press and my moves were essentially wasted and only served to put me at the mercy of both the Welsh and the Angles for the entire game. I applaud the Angles for their stab when I thought we had finally reached an accord; however, I don't particularly think that it required any skill and, in my opinion, this game doesn't serve as a true representation of diplomacy skills. Don't take that as sour grapes, just an opinion. I am still honored to have been selected to play and I am quite thankful for the opportunity. As with all things, this proved an interesting learning experience. All the best to the final 7. I will watch that game with much interest.
Norse: As you can see, I'm completely and unilaterally backing off our
shared border as requested. Hoping you will follow through with your
pledge to not press the attack against me if I pull back.
-Scots

I did not issue support since it was not needed. Proceeding accordingly to taking on Scots. I understand if you want to support the Irish, and he might make it if Picts and Saxons are wiped out prior. For the record, I think Saxons deserve it more to be in the final 7.
To Angles,
Deal, Str dmz it is. Letting Saxons live?
To Saxons,
I still hope you'll pull through.
To Norse/Danes,
Kill the Picts - and try to avoid fighting amongst yourselves. Then you'll both be in the final 7.
Picts, I wasted what would have been a successful support last turn. Let me know if you're still interested in cooperating.
Irish, I'll be taking Dub this turn. The pledge to try to keep you in the game holds.
Britons, we're on track so far.
Angles, I am open to dislodging you in 857, if I have the armies in place. A legal alternative is for you to support one of my armies against one of yours. I could do this in the fall, if you are giving me Sus. If you take Bor, please support Cum-Ayr (even if I have a fleet in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" />Ayr). If you feel the need to support Lot instead, I understand.
-Wales
Wales: I do recall Sus being designated to you so no problem there. I think I am in much greater need than you, but I'll honor the commitment. I moved A Mid - Sus in hopes that you will order Wil - Sus in the Fall which I will support from Lon/Mid. Then I can disband and build a fleet. Make sense? If we bumped in Sus, oh well, you can take Sus in the Fall. I am hoping your convoying that new army over to Ireland. Hopefully we didn't bump in Bor either. I think your army belongs in Ayr and mine in Bor. Perhaps Lot can be mine since you are getting Sus? Let me know.
Britons: Str seems to be a great DMZ with no risk to you, but since there's nothing I can do about it... I agree!
Danes: Talk to me! Peace!
- Angles
Danes to Norse: continued good relations should help us both: I will try to take up position on the big island just south of you
Danes to Britons: I am happy to dmz across the Low/Rhe area if you wish.
Danes to Angles: heading north of you if I can
Danes to Frisians: best of luck in your next game.
Norse press. to Danes...Support for you to FIR with 1 or 2 next year... DUR and south to you if you wish. to Welsh. Join with us. to Britons. South coast and Ireland to you.

Dc181 - NO moves from Austria and Turkey - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
Okay.
1) I'm sick.
2) I have no moves from turkey and Austria
3) i did not write down who has used a grace period except for France
Therefore I am giving Austria and Turkey 24 hours to get moves in or face an nmr. Looks like I'm not adjudicating any of my games tonight.

dc204 ~ The Final Frontier - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
Ok, a change was made in the Dominion starting line-up before game-start - placing an army in Idran and a fleet in Omarion. By the time this Sandusian Slow Worm made it to the first turn, the change didn't stick and was adjudicated by the old set-up.
All this was compounded by the Dominion's difficulty with sub-space communications. The White doesn't help and his Jem'Hadar comms officer was over heard exclaiming "ALL THESE EFFIN BUTTONS!!" just before he put a disrupter to his head.
Anyway, the Dominion's bit of the map is slightly different than you'll recall, and his orders were:
Dominion:
A Idran - Bajor (*Bounce*)
F Korill Prime - T-Rogoran
F Omarion - Teplan
He currently has:
F T-Rogoran
F Teplan
A Idran
The maps and DPW file will all reflect this correction after the 2371.3 adjudication.
Hey - it's not easy being Q!

DC173 OK Computer - Winter 1907 - On Planet Off - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
Heya guys,
Four fresh new builds arrive on the board with the winter turn - in Vienna, London, Constantinople and Berlin. Meanwhile, a slight correction to the French units is made as the French premier prefers to disband rather than retreat to Tuscany. While not yet eliminated, my thanks go to Dom for playing this out...
So we cruise on into Spring 1908 - deadline will be set for Monday, September 1st (11:59 PM GMT).
Cheers!

DC191 Study In Baltic - Spring 1905 - The Beryl Co... - test_gm (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am) |
The man sat in the compartment as the train lurched north from Konigsberg. A passenger train, it had been converted into a troop transport moving north to reinforce the new territories gained in Russia. Rowdy, boisterous Polish soldiers crowded the aisle - cheering into the passing countryside. The man sat alone, however - none of the enlisted troops venturing into his company. Occasionally one would look in, but invariably they would halt at the door, mutter a quick apology and leave the darkened compartment for the more confined space of the hallway and the cheery presence of their comrades.
If you had asked any of them, they would have told you they didn't know why they wouldn't enter the compartment - with its sole passenger and the beryl coronet beside him... It was just, they would have continued, that the aisleway felt safer...
The man sat in the compartment, thinking about his mission. A personal trip, he was in business for himself this time - although his new employers had provided him with transport and certain necessities. He had heard an old friend was travelling to Finland, leaving the safety and familiarity of his London operations behind him... And now, with this old acquaintance out of his element, it was time to settle a long-festering score.
Mr. Holmes was about to have a debt repaid... with interest.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Heya folks,
Poland continues to make gains, this time securing Bolmen from the Swedish and retaking the key province of Narew from the Russians. The Russian unit there was dislodged, but had only Brest to retreat to so I took the liberty. (Chris, if OTB is preferred then please just let me know.)
Otherwise we can move on into Fall 05. Deadline will be set for Monday, September 1st (11:59 PM GMT).
Cheers all!
