DC135 Fear & Loathing - Fall 1913 - A Wave Bre... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Folks,

All good things come to those who wait - and for Jorge of England the good thing that comes is a solo victory. Yes, DC-135 Fear And Loathing wraps in the days of Fall 1913 as England forces the door open in Spain and gains the coveted 18th center. Congratulations to Jorge for the solo win. Kudoes also to the survivors - Eric, Ian and Andy - for hanging in there. And thanks also to all the players who contributed to the effort of the game. Admittedly, I wasn't around to watch it from the beginning but it was quite the ride when I got here. =)

A note about the final SC count - The English army in Sevastopol was dislodged and had the option to retreat to Ukraine or Rumania. For the end-game result, I auto-retreated to the Ukraine. However, if Jorge wishes to pursue the Rumanian route then the English SC count will rise to 19 and the Turkish will lower accordingly. (Jorge, if this is your choice then please let me know ASAP and I will change it.) The game result would remain the same, but what would change would be the statistics maintained on the website.

Once again, congratulations to Jorge for another impressive win, and hats off to all of you players for making quite a game of it - especially towards the end. End-Of-Game (EOG) statements are greatly encouraged.

Cheers everyone! See you all in the next one.

Gonzo Trout

PRESS

Britons speak,

To Welsh,

One more fleet coming up, as agreed upon. Refrained from moving to Eng as to keep good relations.

To Angles/Danes,

I don't want anything to do with your fight if you decide to have a go at it. I will remain supporting whomever is in Tha.

To Danes,

Hm, I agree that it could be usefull to dmz hol and rhe, and that area in general. I pulled away Rhe as a sign of friendship, and because you withdrew your army as well.

To Angles,

Well, Str does border two of your new sc's, so me staying out of there should be a quite good bargain I think.

To Norse,

Interesting proposal, but I don't think it's doable with this current setup. However, if Welsh (for some unknown reason), would attack Angles, then I would of course have to reconsider my overall position. For now though, it's a NO to attacking Angles. And I belive it will remain so unless something drastic happens.

<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comSurprisedffice:smarttags" />Wales: Hopefully we'll keep on building fleets. I think I am going to try to gum up the works by supporting the Picts in Lat and hoping for their support. But I'll also take into account your thoughts concerning Lat, which I would also be happy taking.

Britons: DMZ in Str it is. Let me know how I can help in any other way. I'll Support Hoe when I can. Thanks for your support too.

Danes: I'm a bit nervous with you up in Fir, but I think we're good.

Picts: If you support my hold in Bor I'll support your hold of Lat. Let me know please. If I don't hear from you I'll assume the worst and look to take Lat.

Irish to Welsh, any help would be welcome. I’ve tried helping you against the Scots, for despite you putting me in a very bad position this game, they struck first.

Angles, if A Cum-Ayr fails, please support again, unless supporting Lot makes more sense. Lot is yours. I'll assume you'll want support in from Ayr. I'll keep ordering A Wil-Sus, unless something changes. And I'm ready to lend it back if you need the build as well.

Britons, looks like we'll circle around Ireland and meet in Scotland. I thought of bouncing in Ker, but it might have been misinterpreted. The Irish shouldn't be a problem much longer.

Irish, I don't get it. Maybe you'll surprise me this turn.

Wales

Danes to Britons: I would like a partial dmz across our border, hence leaving only limited forces of mine there. Is that aceptable and useful to you too?

Danes to Angles: how about supporting A Jut to Lot? And extending our co-operation thereafter, especially in the far north?

Danes to Norse: good to see our peace working to help us both- happy to look for new ways of working together.

Guess a lot is down to whether Britons pile into south lands. The Ireland and Scots may get a reprieve

Norse press. to Britons and Danes. the islanders are talking direct support so I suggest that we do as well.

Dc189 Draw Clarification - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
As a few have requested this, I will clarify 2 points.

1) The poins awarded would go like this:0

The points would be split equally through the participants in the draw.

so 6 positions means 7+6+5+4+3+2 = 27
divide by 6 means 4.5 poins each.

2) Given that both the irish and the picts finish on 1 SC. The irish would progress through to the next round (as they have recorded 0 NMRs and as of last winter had a higher SC). The picts would finish in 8th position.

DC135 Fear & Loathing - Fall 1913 - A Wave Bre... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
ENGLAND OEG

First of all, thank you to Trout for running yet another superlative, entertaining, near-flawless game - this time in relief. His first act was to let me replace England, and I'm grateful for that as well, since England was in very good strategic position.

The only point in taking it was to solo, and France effectively stood in my way. I contacted Turkey and Austria, and learned that neither were big fans of France. Austria said he's be neutral, and Turkey agreed to work together, starting with dispatching the last Russian unit. France wanted me to work together for a draw, and we both raced to secure our lines against the other. I got there first and attacked. Given that A/T rarely got in my way, and usually helped in some way, France didn't have much of a chance. I took advantage of the geopolitics to just grind him down methodically, and he graciously accepted the inevitable. A/T decided they didn't want to make my solo so easy, and moved against me just after it was too late. I don't know why they didn't do it earlier, but I'm not complaining. All in all, I thought everyone played their hand as well as they could have, and I was the beneficiary of the baggage that preceded me.

DC135 Fear & Loathing - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
I'd certainly like to add my thanks to Trout for taking over the game and steering us most capably through to a conclusion!

Three of the four of the survivors were replacements, and the game does show how much easier it is for replacements to put the strategic situation ahead of the personal history (at least to begin with!). When I took over Turkey things were pretty desperate - down to 4 centres with the Italian in Smy and an E/F on the way to conquering the world. Clearly until the E/F could be shaken our only chance was for everyone else to team up....

Fortunately Andy as the Austrian was also new and we managed to make the unusual A/I co-operation work through to game end. The 2 SC Russia was also willing to help, but there was no shifting the Italian and, sadly, during the year or so it took to eject him from Turkey and the eastern Med, France managed to secure a lock on the western end. I worked with F for a few turns to remove the Italian, but with an eye firmly on getting to the ION-Ven-Sev statemate which Andy and I came within one SC of securing...but we had to gamble to get the last unit in place and it didn't quite come off.

We'd tried everything we could diplomatically to shake the E/F but with no success right through to the original England's unexplained disappearance. England had the best position and hence the upper hand; whether the original E ever intended to break for the solo was never clear, but certainly Jorge was blessed with as good a replacement position as anyone's ever likely to get..and he handled the opportunity very well.

With a new England everything changed - since F appeared closed to anything other than the original E/F and we weren't strong enough to hold out alone the only option was working with England for long enough to gain the upper hand against F but not so long that the solo became unstoppable. It was good working with him whilst it lasted, and Jorge is probably right that we decided to act one turn too late - but with F determined to hand over the solo by throwing his position, rather than playing the game, really the end was inevitable whatever we had done. Except for the last spring turn, I think Andy and I read Jorge pretty well, and I hope he feels we at least gave him a run for his money....congratulations to the winner, and thanks again to Trout for rescuing us mid-game.

Ian

Viking victory conditions for Solo & Scorched... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Scorched Earth offers a whole new strategy where Supply Centers can be destroyed before they fall in your enemy's hands.

This adds another level of anticipation.
For the attacker: rushing in too late and you'll find that the SC is on fire and lost forever. A defender may choose to set fire to its SCs if it feels threatened and desparate about its chances of survival. Beleagering an enemy may not be the best strategy.
For the defender: destroy the SC you're occupying too early and you loose the extra unit; hesitate too long and your chances of destroying it may be gone.

Viking rules state that a Solo victory requires a minimum of 26 SCs.
One player has argued that "in theory a player could be deprived of a solo due to reasons having nothing to do with his skill." and suggested "a vote that 26 wins, or 50% of the total."

My opinion as a GM is that Scorched Earth requires more from the Diplomatic Skills to prevent that no 26 SC are left for a Solo. Sooth the other players' into trusting you, team up with other players, avoid brute-force, etcetera. Subtlety is key here.

That it is possible to win by a Solo was shown in the previous Viking game.

But since this is YOUR game, I would like you - the players - to decide.
Let the voting begin...

DC172 Midsummer Night's Stab - Spring 1607 - Troil... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Take but degree away, untune that string,
And, hark, what discord follows!

---------

Very little changes on center-stage with Spring 1607, but quite a bit of action can be seen in the wings. The Spaniards bear the worst of it, as Danish fleets sail easily into stabbing position and the North African garrison is sent packing by the Russians.

We have the one, aforementioned retreat due up. Deadline for Summer 1607 will be set for Sunday, August 31st (11:59 PM GMT)...

In addition, a French/Danish/Spanish draw has been proposed. Let me hear what the crowd says - deadline for your yay or nay votes will be with the Summer retreats.

Let me know if you see any errors. Cheers!

Concerning Solo Victories - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Nick,

Solo wins are always something to be proud of, seeing as how many games bog into a stalemate... This isn't anything surprising - if there is a clear front-runner then the rest of the board usually gangs together to try to prevent them from winning. A 22 center win in 1906 is definitely very cool.

But I don't think we keep records of this stuff in DC. The Hall of Games is there, so I totally recommend poking through it and checking it out.

Comparing one solo win to another is like comparing two flawless diamonds. Each is stunning in its own way. Imagine soloing an Imperial game, with a minimum winning condition of 70 centers. Or soloing in one of Sims FOG games - where you can't even see the entire board...

In one case, I saw a Germany convince the rest of the board that he deserved to solo even though he only had 12 centers. Nowhere near victory conditions - yet he persuaded the entire group of players to agree to it. It was a brilliant piece of diplomacy.

Anyways, just my two cents worth.. Cheers,

Trout

DC135 Fear & Loathin - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
To all my foes,
This was a great game. You all missed it, but the swift destruction of Germany from 6 to 0 in one year by Russia, England, and France, about 1903 (all orchestrated by France) was awesome. I can say that I defeated six of my enemies, and I lost when England, my puppet left. I could have won easily right as the old England left, but the replacement Jorge came so quickly. As each player was eliminated or quit, my zeal to play waned. England had always had a better position over me, and the fact that Turkey kept sending all his reinforcements into the Med as fleets spelled out that he was not capable of fighting a war against England, but only against me. Sorry Turkey, it could never have worked. Alas.....

I do have one point to brag on. None of my home cities were devastated by the horrors of war. In fact, none of them were even attacked by any alien army. Only Piccardy was ever occupied, and at the very end, but briefly. Edinburgh was sacked and burned by marauding Germans, and the Turk city of Smyrna was occupied in a similar fashion by the Italians. The invaders probably smashed all of the fine art they could find, and may have shot the mayor or something.

I must say that I am glad it over. I had always wanted a short war so as to not upset my other duties in life. I spent a lot of time early on writing relly long letters to almost all the players. Once vistory seemed to be out of reach, I thought I would try to settle for a quick end, but the English war-monger opted for a longer and bloody war.

Congrats to all you replacements: England for the vistory, Austria for never dying, and Turkey... I have no kind words for you.

-Eric

dc204 - Has anyone heard from Cardassia? - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
I waited an extra day and still no word or reply from Cardassia. (hexen_42)

Has anyone heard from him?

If there still isn't any response by the time I get online tomorrow
morning - we'll begin to look for a replacement

dc193 ~ Manifested Destiny - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Correction: An error in the .map file failed Britain's supported move F
JAV-SUM which should have succeeded.

The .map file has been corrected and posted in
http://mainecav.org/diplomacy/imperial1841
The Zip file has been updated as well.

A correct .DPW file for RealWorld has been uploaded to
http://mainecav.org/diplomacy/dc193

Please note the change of positions: there is a British fleet in Sumatra
and Java is unoccupied.

Hi,
If you ask for stats, expect me to chime in... Smile

All-time fastest solo: dc088
(http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/game_page.php?game_id=dc08Cool

Won by Christine in 3 (THREE! Count them uno-dos-tres) game years, GM'd by Vegas, a gunboat game of the Hundred Years War. This is a 3-player variant, and she smacked it down for sure sweeping this one in lightning time - almost sure to be a record never beaten. (of course I should never say never!)

Fastest "Standard" solo: "Mostly Harmless"... dc144.
GM'd by yours truly, and won by David Ellsworth in 5 game years.

Your game, Ze, would be the 2nd quickest solo, in 6 years, then I count at least 2 that were won in 7 years. Congrats of course - now the key is to be able to win a game AFTER soloing. Very Happy

DC172 Midsummer - Spring 1607 GM Error - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Heya folks,

Here we go with another edition of 'Guess Where The GM Error Is?'... With apologies, it looks as though I dropped a key Spanish support from the Tyrrhenian Sea while entering orders into RP. The support for North Africa makes quite a difference, and instead of the Spanish being dislodged from North Africa it is the Russians dislodged from the Ionian Sea...

The Russian Ionian fleet may retreat to Greece or the Aegean Sea. I will issue the revised map tonight and reset the summer deadline.

Apologies for any confusion. Thanks for the player who caught this error.

Cheers!

dc204 - A New Cardassia - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)

"We've heard rumors that Cardassians hibernate. It was that or molting, I don't recall which."

I had to respond to a horse emergency this morning, so our Cardassian player had even longer to respond than I initially gave him and still - not a peep. I suppose he's away for the holiday weekend, so...

Does anyone want to wait till Tuesday to see if that is the case - or begin recruiting for a replacement? We're only in the Fall move of the first year at a point that calling this an NMR would have drastic effects on the game's timeline - hey, this IS Star Trek - it's a popular plot device.

I'll hold off till I read what you folks have to say.

DC161 Knights Who Say Ni! - Summer 835 - Gorilla L... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Now Mr Phipps, you do realize that the post of librarian carries with it certain very important responsibilities. I mean, there's the selection of books, the record library, and the art gallery. Now it seems to me that your greatest disadvantage is your lack of professional experience ... coupled with the fact that, uh, being a gorilla, you would tend to frighten people.

Hey guys,

As mentioned this afternoon the Bretons check out the libraries in Connaught and Chester, only to find that all the war epics were all over-due and all other books had been ripped, torn and burnt. Ooooh those Dark Ages...

DC135 Fear And Loathing - One Final Loathe, No Mor... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Heya guys,

One final note to put the finishing touch on DC-135. England wished to change their retreat from Ukraine to Rumania. This adds a center to the English SC count, upping them to 19. In addition, it ties Turkey with France for second place at 6 centers apiece.

Just whispers of a game gone by in the night. Cheers everyone!
