DC424: English End-of-Game Statement - Dip_Power_915   (May 16, 2012, 11:50 am)
Thank you to John, Mike, and the rest of the DC and WinterBlitz staff for another smoothly run game and tournament.
Congratulations to Rick on his well-deserved Solo/Board-Top, and in the event of a Draw, congratulations to those who shared in it. Thank you to the players of DC424 for what I found to be an enjoyable and interesting game, and my apologies to anyone who did not enjoy playing with me. Good Luck to All in your future endevours.

Not a big deal, but did you attach the wrong map, this one doesn't seem to have the retreated units in their retreated places.... Thanks,Jim-Bob

Recruiting for Anarchy - AceRimmer   (May 16, 2012, 9:04 am)
Now recruiting for...

Anarchy: Return to Dystopia

Anarchy! - the variant where you choose your own home centers and where, therefore, nobody has a starting advantage. It's a fresh look at a familiar map.

This variant is every bit as awesome as you think it is... only more so. Like if science discovered an all-doughnut diet that fulfills your nutritional needs, sends you to your target weight, and prevents cancer. This is what we're talking about.

Anarchy is played like standard Dip, except players choose their own initial home centers. The selection of centers is exciting and involves a lot of clever outwitting of your feisty-but-dimwitted opponents. Do you cluster your centers for security? Or do you spread them out for mobility? Do you establish a corner position? Or do you try to straddle the stalemate line? There's so much to consider. However, in all the thrill of selecting centers it's easy to forget: afterward, a game of Diplomacy will break out, and you will need all your negotiating skills!

How are home centers selected? There will be three rounds all in one week. Each round, you submit a preference list of supply centers, and (using black magic) the GM awards each player a center as high as possible on his/her preference list. After the third round, the GM sets the clock to Winter 1900, everybody builds, and the game begins.

19 months ago, I GM'd a game of anarchy: DC 345. It was one of the best games I've ever GM'd. You can look up the results at http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/game_page.php?game_id=dc345 (You might be interested in the Winter 1900 map to see how center selection turned). The selection process was fascinating, but after the dust of ten years cleared, the players with the 'worst' starting positions won because of better alliance.

A few notes of importance:
- Anarchy uses chaos builds (so that landlocked nations can build fleets later)
- There will be eight nations, not seven (this helps avoid a standard AEFGIRT feel to the game)
- I am implementing a couple of player-suggested changes based on experience from DC 345: (a) instead of the crowded feel of eight 4-center nations, there will be eight 3-center nations with some room to grow; and (b) I will not award adjacent centers to two different powers during the first round of selections.

Lastly -- and this turned out to be unexpected fun -- you will have to name your own country and choose your own color/pattern on the map. You are further invited to invent a flag, national animal, governmental structure, historic lore, key exports, national soccer team, anthem... you can imagine as much or as little as you like. What with the draft and the naming/coloring, I found players were already quite engaged long before the first units even moved.

[Note: if there is enough interest, I will run a second game, so keep signing up.]

World Diplomacy Convention in Chicago - DancingQueen   (May 15, 2012, 10:04 am)
What what what?

A five-round Diplomacy tournament to crown the world champion is what. After the fourth round, the players will be ranked by their top three scores, and the seven best will compete on a top board in the final round for the world championship. All players, including those on the top board, also will vie for the titles of North American Champion and Alpha Weasel zeta, the Weasel Moot VI champion. Those two titles, as well as the official Grand Prix ranking, will be based on best three of five rounds.

More information at: http://www.windycityweasels.org/wdc

But here are the basics:

When: August 10-12, 2012.

Where: Chicago's historic Congress Plaza Hotel, 520 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60605.

How much: The entry fee is $70, $35 for students.

Preregistration will open Nov. 1. Players may preregister through August 8 for a fee of $60, $30 for students. (Weasels who have paid their 2012 dues are entitled to an additional discount of $10.)

I want to echo Chris Martin's invitation Cool

How can you not be interested when if you come, you get to meet both Chris and me?? Thinking you won't know anyone else, then invite two other friends to come. Of all the diplomatic communities I'm part of (and I'm a joiner, so I'm part of a lot of them), I've met the fewest people here.

I'd like to meet some more of you in Chicago, think about joining us. Chris and I would be happy to answer any more questions you might have!!!

My, my... what fun!  It was really a treat to watch these orders come in and I have to say, I was cheering for not-the-draw (and I got my wish).  We do not have unanimous agreement on the End of Game, so we continue.  Naturally, we do have another proposal for the exact same thing, but that will have to wait until the spring.

DC 424 Spring 06 - untitled36   (May 14, 2012, 10:09 pm)
I will not officially declare any end of Game until thursday morning. Remember that someone could agree to an EGP publically but counter that privately. It's always encouraged to continue to submit moves just in case. Also, along those lines, if any of the EGP *do* pass, they happen before the turn is adjudicated, and so I will not list any moves, nor will centers change hands. Just fyi. Thanks all!

*Austria Didn't Get the Memo**Cool Heads Talk Peace**Italians Swap Tri for Vie*Hey all, First off, sorry for being out of communication this weekend. I know an end game proposal was suggested, but I was away from my computer and unable to officially put that out. Also, lots of revisions this turn, so make sure I got your most recent set of moves. I was most concerned about Austria's set, but I double checked it and it appears to be correct.  End game proposal-wise. Here's how I deal with that. I will generally ask for a vote on any end game proposal suggested (whether it is proposed in public or privately to me). If someone replies to all with a vote, I will consider it their vote unless they privately message me saying they actually want to vote differently. I will not say who proposed what vote, or who voted what. Results will be pass or fail. Even after the game is over I will not list
who voted
for what, although obviously if a proposal passes, that means everyone voted yes. Also, if there are two end game proposals and both pass, the MORE inclusive proposal succeeds. Lastly, you CAN propose a draw and then vote against it. I had a GM once who would not allow that, but I'm fine with it.  For this season we have two EGP's, on both extremes. There's a Russian Solo and a DIAS on the table. Votes are due with fall moves. Again, votes must be unanimous to pass, and a failure to vote counts as a "no" vote.  Whew. Hope that covers everything. DC421 - Spring 1906 Results - Corrino   (May 14, 2012, 6:51 pm)
Hi Players,
Well, as it turned out I'm neither earlier nor later than usual. What I am going to be is briefer.  I have to take the kids shopping for last-minute birthday presents for my wife, and the stores won't be open that much longer.
PRESS:
Germany Proposes concession to Turkey!
Congratulations Eric, a very well played Turkish position!
And no, it's not a bluff, as we have our first official...
END-GAME PROPOSAL:
Turkish solo victory

As always, all players must vote in favor of the proposal in order for
it to pass.  A single NO vote and the proposal fails.  In addition, failure to vote counts as a NO.  Votes are submitted with your upcoming FALL orders.  Vote tallies are NOT reported.  Only the success or failure of the vote.

SPRING SUMMARY:

London falls to FranceNorway falls to RussiaMarseilles falls to Turkey... Yes, Turkey!  I love big convoys!

RETREATS:
French A Marseilles can retreat to Gascony or OTB.
English F Norway can retreat to Skagerrak or Norwegian Sea or Barents Sea or Sweden or OTB.

NEXT DEADLINE:

Summer retreats are due tomorrow, May 15, by 18:00 Eastern time.  Not sure when the adjudication will be, since, as I said, it's my wife's birthday.  If I should happen to have the retreats in hand early, and they are marked as final, I will publish
early.

Cheers,Chris

I could not locate orders for England. Germany and Russia swap centers in northern Germany, while Turkey successfully defends Bulgaria against allied Austrian and Italian forces.  Italy gains MAO while bouncing 2 of 3 attempts by Franco-German armies to move southward.  Russia reoccupies Galicia as the Austrians pull back.  And Germany sails back into the North Sea. Two units are dislodged, each of which has multiple retreat options:
