DC406: WINTER 04 past due! - offdisc   (Mar 23, 2012, 12:37 am)
Well, I hoped we'd keep the game on schedule, but I cannot convince myself to force disband and waive builds for more than half of you.So... deadline pushed for one day.  New deadline is FRIDAY 3/23 (at) 5PM!

Hoping to keep Spring deadline still Tuesday, 3/27....

dc408 fall and autumn 1909 results! - coryfucius   (Mar 22, 2012, 4:56 pm)
None of the endgame proposals receives unanimous support, so the game continues... England, with Turkish support, sails to the south coast of Spain.  Italy supports Germany's move to take over Marseilles.  Germany attempts to support an English move to Munich, only to find a different English army marching in.  Well behind the lines, England quietly sails into an undefended Denmark.  Russia's army in Galicia loses out to a Turkish advance, but not before bouncing Germany's attempt to advance into Ukraine. Two units are dislodged, but each only has one valid on-board retreat, so I'll go ahead and order those myself to keep the game moving. Winter 1909 adjustments, due tomorrow 3/23 at 3pm Central (US) / 20:00

Subject: DC 409: Fall 1909

No Austrian orders this season.  No doubt, this mucks up Germany's plans, as A Vienna S A Galicia-Budapest seems implied.  Oh well, it is not to be.  Hopefully, Nathan is okay, and we'll all shuffle off joyfully in Spring 1910.

Even without Austria's help, though, the FG alliance scores smashing victories, and two Turkish units (F Venice and F Apulia) are dislodged with nowhere to go.

Sadly, we also wave farewell to Fletch.  Arrivederci, amico.  From now on, we play with just four.

France, Germany, and Turkey all have builds.  That Italian fleet in Adriatic will automatically disband.  Orders due tomorrow!

dc414 summer 03 adjudication and more press! - jerome777   (Mar 22, 2012, 4:13 pm)
Hi everyone,

More press!

'The crowd roars as their beloved Kaiser steps to the balcony of his capital. He takes a few moments to soak in the adoration and waves to his people.
'Raising his hands the crowd slowly calms, ???My people,??? he places his hand on his heart, ???my friends. There has never been a better time to be a citizen of our great Germany !???
'The crowd erupts in cheers.
'???We have begun to beat back the Franco hoard that had threatened to take what we, as a people, hold so dear our HOMELAND!???
'More roars and cheer.
'???But we have not done it alone. We have had the pleasure to be working with The King of England. He has made it clear that his noble sailors are joining us in our quest to keep Germany and the world safe from the likes of France .???
'The Kaiser pauses for the cheers to subside. ???You have given me so much and yet I come to you today to ask for more. I have just received word that the Tsar of Russia, with no provocation, ordered an attack on our city of Kiel .??? He pauses again as the people explode in anger. ???It is true; the cowards from Moscow attacked our land with no reason. In fact I have done nothing but honor the agreements the Tsar and I have made. This cowardly action has forced me to come to you and ask even more of you. I must declare WAR on Russia !???
'The crowd chants ???WAR WAR WAR WAR WAR!???
'???It brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart to know that you my people, my friends, trust me to do what I believe is best for us all. This new war will cost us our sons, our fathers, our brothers, our uncles and some of ourselves. This is a tremendous price to pay and we will pay it. But we will NOT pay it alone. His Royal Majesty Mark, By the Grace of God, King of England and Lord of Ireland, has offered his brave British sailors to aid the common cause of our people.
'From this day forward any man, woman or child from the land of our new friend and is welcome in The Homeland!???
'The cheers are deafening as the Kaiser waves to his people with a genuine look of love and thanks. '

Here's the retreats for Summer 03:

Austria:
A Serbia, no move received (*Disbanded*)

Thought we might have more mis-communication leading to a retreat brawl and disbanding of units. But Archers went a different direction, and Gnomes survive.

Spring is officially here -- Happy first day of Spring!  The flowers in my yard have pushed through the frozen ground and some blooms have popped. A field of yellow dandelions and purple crocuses sits by my fence. But my front yard still has one little patch of snow. Weird....

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Thought we might have more mis-communication leading to a retreat brawl and disbanding of units. But Archers went a different direction, and Gnomes survive.

Spring is officially here -- Happy first day of Spring!  The flowers in my yard have pushed through the frozen ground and some blooms have popped. A field of yellow dandelions and purple crocuses sits by my fence. But my front yard still has one little patch of snow. Weird....

Now then everybody,

We have press!

'The London Times reporter was granted a meeting with the King yesterday as news of the latest British movements reached Great Britain. The interview lasted only one question, to which the King replied, "The die is cast, may God bless us all."'

The following retreats are needed:

I'd like to give you a day longer than usual next week to compensate for this week's delayed adjudication. The Autumn 1903 moves will therefore be due on Tuesday 27 March at 2000GMT.

Did no one think to consult with the GM abotu filling up his mailbox???? Thank god Google has tons of space, and I regularly clear out Panix' box.
Seriously, a bunch of you have been sending in comments -- sometimes the only thing that gets me through the agony of processing the move (Smile) is reading the intrigue and laughing to myself about how poorly misled you've all been.

On a separate note, I don't know how many of you are doing this but I've been sending annual "diaries" to Hoffman for him to publish at the end of the game. A lot happened this turn and I'm not sure I fully understand it but I'd LOVE it if some of you sent something to Hoffman for posterity so that we all could have a better understanding of how the game unfolded. I find that reading those after-action reports (which tend to be much more honest then the in game communications) really improves my skill as a dip player.

Seriously, though, we've had 3 straight turns with *5* retreats, and they've all processed on time, with a build phase the following day.

Now we have *6* retreats, with 2 coming from the same power.

This is not a significant increase, so why all the worry *this* time?

dc407 Russia EOG - derekthefeared2   (Mar 21, 2012, 12:05 pm)
Sorry for the delay.  Been on vacation so had trouble getting e-mail access.

I'll try and keep mine relatively short.

At the start or the game I knew I was going to be very busy and wouldn't have a ton of time for diplomacy so I just wanted 1 very close ally and we'd try to conquer the board together.  My first choice was Turkey and although his initial response with positive... he didn't quite sell me that he was really committed to the alliance.  If I had gone with him it would have been a very different game.  But Germany approached me about the possibility of a GAR alliance.  Austria also seemed very into the idea.  We starting working together and building trust quickly.  Almost immediately we were working excellently together and in a lot of ways had the game wrapped up in just a few seasons.

Probably a lot of you think that I should have tried for a solo, although I certainly never had it leave my mind I didn't go with it for a few reasons.  One I don't think there was ever a time where I could have turned on Germany and Austria and made it work.  I would have needed France or Italy to support me in my solo.  My communication with both of them was very limited and had no reason to suspect that they would do anything other than ally and prevent me from getting the solo.  Also it being round one of a tournament certainly made a difference.  If I went into round 2 with a solo in round 1 I'd have a huge target on my head.  With us doing a 3 way draw we are in a good position in round 2, but not so strong that individuals won't be willing to work with us.

I'd like to thank John and Michael.  Certainly one of the most organized and efficient alliances that I have been a part of.

Also thanks so much to both GM's for running an organized and efficient game!

Oh, most definitely!  I *always* give 24 hours for Adjustments, and that will never change. So, if I get all the retreats in by 5 PM MST today, deadline can stay the same -- tomorrow at 5PM MST. Otherwise, it slips to Friday.

Given the Large Number of Retreats that are expected, and no specification of how many Builds, or Removals are required for each Race, would it not make more sense to have Retreats submitted by Thursday, and Adjustments on Friday? I think Mark was saying he'd like to see the retreats (for example, where CAN retreats) before he makes his removals. Sounds reasonable to me.

Mike,
Given the Large Number of Retreats that are expected, and no specification of how many Builds, or Removals are required for each Race, would it not make more sense to have Retreats submitted by Thursday, and Adjustments on Friday? If one of the Retreats is an OTB, it would change the amount of adjustments required for the Race.
