DC406: SC Options Futures Market Opens!! - laxrulz777 (Jan 20, 2012, 9:37 am) |
Since it's a derivatives structure, I'd like to perform a naked hedge against it's value decline. I'll do this at a leverage of 10:1 (i.e. 10 hedges for every 1 outstanding). I'll then buy your derivative for $100 and when the GM exercises clause 6 and pays me with "a nice email", I'll be owed $1,000 from whomever the counter party is for my naked hedges...
Any takers?

DC 398, Autumn 1904 - alfdog (Jan 20, 2012, 5:58 am) |
Dear all
Many thanks for playing I did enjoy it even though eliminated.
My game hung on a few issues of my failure and other people reading the board better.
Firstly my complacency-I was convinced that ger was in league with fra to take out eng, consequently I never imagined the move east from ger and my fleet
stp nc was redundant.
Secondly Germany exploiting that complacency and opportunity, plus his ability to correctly estimate that eng and fra were too embroiled to resolve their
differences and turn on ger. This was a big risk, and generally ger moving east usually ends in failure. Well done to ger he did this attack superbly.
Third my inability to persuade eng and fra to stop fighting. Fra were up for this but I just could not get a decent dialogue with eng, I think that mistake
cost me dear and will ultimately cost eng dear, we shall see. Had they have done what I think was the most sound thing, and turned on ger then it would have been quite different. I don’t want this to sound like sour grapes, it isn’t, I failed to make a sufficiently
compelling case, but to say ger has had an easy run this game is an understatement.
Fourth I could not get Italy to turn on tur, try as I might to encourage him to move to east med or aeg I could not. No offence to tur, I just needed him
preoccupied so I could fight off ger without fear of a southern attack.
Fifth I never really got, or gave, the trust that tur needed to secure that southern border. Busyness at work meant I missed one turn’s communication which
led to tur thinking I was turning on him and he then moved on me. Tur apologised but at that point I said don’t worry press home.
I enjoyed the game but ultimately in diplomacy you have to either persuade people to do what suits you, without them realising it, or to read the game and
people’s relative skills to work out they will do what suits you without any nudging because they don’t realise what a threat you are. In this I abjectly failed and ger have risen to an unchallenged and comfortable ascendancy. He should solo, and will, unless
others realise his strength: With his central position any offer of a two-way will probably be something the weaker partner will live to regret.
The game will be remembered for a few things, I’ve never seen a six centre Italy at the end of the first season, and I’ve never yet seen an early eastern
attack by ger not exploited by eng and fra.
Plus in my entire life I have now played 17 games of diplomacy and this is the first ever time I’ve been eliminated-well it had to happen sometime!
Best wishes, I hope to play with you all again.

Okay, well no retreat order from Britain, so his army is removed from the board. We move on to winter 1904. I am travelling, so computer time is a bit limited. I will adjudicate
as soon as I have a full set of orders, but I'm going to make the actual deadline for
winter on Monday, January 23 at 16:00 MST. That's 23:00 GMT.
Did I mention before that Russia was eliminated?? Or more accurately, eliminated himself?
Here are the adjustments that I need:
France: build 1
Germany: build 1
Italy: build 1
Russia: remove 3 (eliminated)
Turkey: build 3
Updated maps attached. Have fun.

DC412 - Game Start - Corrino (Jan 19, 2012, 4:16 pm) |
Hello All,
It has now been almost 48 hours since I sent the game start message, and I have yet to hear from 3 of our 7 players.
Would the following players please respond to let me know you're alive and intent on participating in this game?
Joe Babinsack -- France
Ed Bailey -- Austria
Mick Cox -- Germany
I did have Joe's address wrong on the first message, but I fixed and re-sent it to him immediately. Anyone who relied on my addressing and not the message text should double-check what they have for Joe.
Finally, the DC412 Game Page has been updated. You can always check there for results, deadlines and other game info. I typically post to the game page immediately AFTER I send out the results in email.
Thanks,
Chris

Subject: DC412 - Game Start
Greetings, Gentlemen! Welcome to the 2012 Winter Blitz Tournament!
If you're a repeat customer, glad to have you back. If you're new to this event, congratulations! You're going to have a great time.
My name is Chris Morse, and I have the honor of being your GM for the first round of play. I know a couple of you already (Hi!) and am looking forward to getting know the rest of you over the course of the next 3 months or so.
Before we get to the country assignments, let's take care of the housekeeping.
1. Here are the tournament rules. Everything important is here: http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/tournament.php?display=rules
2. Deadlines. One of the key features of the Blitz is its hard-core schedule. Did you see the schedule in the rules? It was the first item. Don't tell me you skipped reading the rules! Uh, oh. I hope we're not going to have a problem here. Go back and read the rules.
3. Deadlines (Part 2). As the GM, I get to pick the time that orders are due. I pick 6:00 Eastern Standard time. I'm pretty sure that's 5 hours behind GMT. Please get your orders in on time. To be honest, I usually won't be adjudicating until 7:00 or 7:30. You may submit orders up until the time I start adjudicating. If you send me orders and I've already started, I'll simply tell you it's too late.
4. Addressing orders. Send me your orders at camorse22(at)yahoo.com. Please place the game number, country name, season and year in the subject line.
GOOD: DC412 - French orders Spring 1901
BAD: France orders
GM'S Pet Peeve: Lazy people who submit orders by hitting REPLY, so their retreats or Fall orders come in looking like this: Re: DC412 - Spring 1901 Results
5. Acknowledging orders. I will ALWAYS acknowledge orders. A-L-W-A-Y-S. If you don't get an acknowledgment, I haven't seen your orders. Double-check your addressing, and if there is any doubt, send them again.
6. The Blitz Orders mailbox. When sending me orders, you should always copy the WB orders mailbox. That's orders(at)diplomaticcorp.com. This does two things for you: (1) If I lose your orders, or there is some glitch and I don't get your orders, the copy in the orders mailbox is proof that you submitted and you will avoid an NMR. (2) If something happens to me to prevent my adjudicating, the tournament director (TD) will use what is in this mailbox to adjudicate. He's not going to wait for me to get out of the hospital so I can forward him your orders. COPY THE BOX!
NOTE: Orders sent to the mailbox and NOT your GM will not get you off the NMR hook. This happened last year where a player sent to the wrong GM and the mailbox. Read scenario (1) again. The key point is that to prove you weren't at fault, the message in the blitz orders mailbox has to show that you did correctly send it to me.
7. Reminders. As those of you who have played with me know, I'm a huge care bear. I will send reminders 95% of the time. This is a courtesy, because I really don't like to see anyone miss a turn. Of course, you know that my failing to send a reminder can never be used as an excuse for your orders to be late.
8. Prelims. Not required, but feel free to submit them if you like. When the deadline hits, I'm going to use the most recent set you've sent me.
9. Errors. The next game I adjudicate perfectly will be the first one. If you spot an error, it is your job to let me know right away. Never had one yet I couldn't fix, as long as it is brought to me attention promptly.
10. Other correspondence. Feel free to write to me with questions or comments about the game or the tournament. I'm always interested in what's going on behind the scenes, too. Players who include even the briefest explanations of what is going on in their heads are always appreciated by GM's.
NEXT PSEUDO-DEADLINE: Please respond to this message immediately to confirm your contact information and your participation in the tournament. If something has come up and you need to drop out, better to do that now than after the game has begun.
FIRST GAME DEADLINE: Spring 1901 Orders are due Monday, January 23, at 18:00 EST.
COUNTRY ASSIGNMENTS: Countries were assigned by random draw. I interrupted my daughter reading "In Cold Blood" for English class and had her pick seven armies out of the virtual hat, with the order of the draw corresponding to the order of the player list as it was given to me below by the tournament directors.

Good game all! Seismics are interesting! Apologies
for my lack of responsiveness in communication at times, travelling, moving
house, and Christmas are my excuses!
Best of luck to everyone. May your alliances be long,
your stabs be deep and your seismics chaotic!
Cheers,
Daniel

Just noticed this is Fall -
so we have ourselves a Double Eviction Ceremony! Both Austria and Turkey
are eliminated. That's pretty amazing - many games will see one Balkan
power draw the short straw in a southeast battle - and get eliminated by year
3. But two? That's pretty near impossible to pull off in a regular
game. So those retreats can't impact anything and will just end up
going off the board anyways. All we really need is the Russian A
Warsaw...
Enjoy! And better luck next game to
Warren and Daniel. Tho moreso to Daniel, cuz I'm *in* Warren's next
game.

The chairman (GM) does not accept the motion to amend the proposal to a RAFT draw, as the gentleman was not granted the floor at the time of his proposal. The FART proposal stands. Please vote YAY or NAY with your Fall orders. A failure to vote counts as a NAY vote (as the result of the vote would not be unanimous amongst all players remaining).

Hi All,
There has been a death in my family, so I will be off the Net from
Sunday AM through Tuesday AM. The deadline will stick as Monday by 5
PM, but I will accept changes until the time I process the moves ---
which will probably be Tuesday night.
Mike, could we make the next deadline for sometime later in the week
so I have time to Diplom once I return? Much appreciated!
Thanks for understanding!
Michael

dc-408 game start! - coryfucius (Jan 18, 2012, 11:08 am) |
Welcome
to our round 1 game of DC Winter Blitz 2012, everyone! For
those of you who don't already know me, my name is Cory Burris, and I have been
a member of DC for over 5 years. Most of
my Diplomacy in recent years has been limited to GM duties, as the task of
locating billions of dollars for a cratering state budget has taken up much of my time. I work in the budget
office of the Governor of Illinois, an unenviable task, as Illinois recently passed California
as the US state with the lowest bond rating from Moody???s. Even with a big income tax increase that took
effect last year, our state still can???t pay all its bills and balance its
budget. Does anyone know where to find $5-$10
billion fast? Since
this is a tournament game, there is a common set of rules and season deadlines
that all GMs are observing. This can be
found at www.diplomaticcorp.com/tournament.php
-- be sure to click the "Rules" option near the top of the main
screen once you go to this page. Notably,
all spring deadlines will occur on a Monday, fall deadlines will be on a
Thursday, and winter adjustments will occur on a Friday. GMs are able to choose the time when orders
are due, so for this game, I am setting all game deadlines at 3pm Central (US)
/ 21:00 GMT.
An
important note: when submitting orders, make sure to include the game
identifier "dc-408" in the subject line, and also cc: the
tournament's Orders box (orders-at-diplomaticcorp.com) -- this is for your
protection in case your e-mail doesn't get through to me, or if I am not
available and need a moderator to run a turn. One of my players in dc-291 sent an e-mail
that didn't arrive in my inbox for a day, but fortunately did reach the Orders
box, saving him from an NMR. Press
is allowed and encouraged. For those who
are unfamiliar with press, that is simply generic messages that are made public
as a part of the turn's results. Typically,
press is just generic silliness that may or may not pertain to the game. There was actually some good press in the
dc-274 game, so you can read the different turns from that game to see some
examples. Don't
forget to check out the game's page on the DC web site at www.diplomaticcorp.com/game_page.php?game_id=dc408
-- I will update it after each adjudication. I will also e-mail each adjudication to
everyone, as well as a .dpy game file for use in the Realpolitik adjudication
software.
And
now your lineups! We have a nice mix of experienced and newer members of DC for
this game: Austria: Mike Hoffman (mrh-at-panix.com)
England: Scott Johnston (johnston.scott-at-comcast.net) France: Andrew Tanner (amtrating-at-gmail.com) Germany: Alex Maslow (blueraider0-at-gmail.com) Italy: Dorian Love (dlove-at-roedeanschool.co.za) Russia: Brian Lam (briankingfox-at-hotmail.com) Turkey: Timothy Crosby (tim_crosby-at-hotmail.com)
Please be sure to introduce yourselves to your fellow players. Also, take note that two of our players are not based in the US, so keep those time zone
differences in mind when communicating with other players. The
spring 1901 deadline will be Monday, January 23 at 3pm Central (US) / 21:00
GMT. Preliminary orders are strongly
encouraged! Thanks for playing,
everyone, and happy stabbing! Cory[Reply] |
Winter Blitz 12 - Welcome and Let's Begin - FuzzyLogic (Jan 18, 2012, 10:23 am) |
Hi everyone, and welcome again!
Game-Starts are out! (last game starting momentarily) You should have your GM, opponents, country, etc. All moves are due next Monday -- in about 5 days -- at the time set by your GM.
For those interested, you can subscribe to the WB Forum - what this will do, much like the old Yahoo Group, is deliver all the WB related emails right to your inbox. The results, press, banter etc get posted in this forum. Visit http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/profile.php - then subscriptions - to have them forwarded right to you. To post, you can do so from the website, or just write to blitz(at)diplomaticcorp.com.
Remember to put your GM on your safe or approved senders list - these games move fast, so if you do not get a results email, it is up to you to find out what happened in time to make the next turn. And if anything is ever wrong, you can only protest w/in 24 hours. Once the 24th hour passes, the results will stand as posted -- even if you're away and can't contest w/in that time! It's just the way these games work. Those who turn in prelims will in general do well... The games get hectic and there will be NMR's -- so having your units ordered and not sitting around is key. Also don't forget to cc to orders(at)diplomaticcorp.com. Because moves will not always be confirmed by your GM, this is your proof of orders sent.
Enjoy!
-mike & garry
Hey everyone, and welcome to the 5th Annual Winter Blitz!
We are a bit behind this year but we are ready to roll nonetheless. We have a lower attendance but 7 boards with such short notice is still a phenomenal turnout. It isn't sheer numbers that make the tournament - it's the stabbing! I will be one of your hosts - my name is Garry, and along with my Co-TD Mike we will be bringing you this little tournament. If you have any questions, concerns, or even compliments, send them on to one of us and we'll get back to you ASAP (Garry = kielmarch(at)hotmail.com; Mike = mike(at)fuzzylogicllc.com)
This year our tournament is going to be put on by 6 returning vets from previous WB tournaments (WB11 included), plus 1 new GMs for this year. That's Christine, Cory, John, Chris, Hamish, Adam, and Jerome. Remember to tip your GM! They make WB possible for our community; Mike and I simply do the easy kickoff work. Thanks to Jerome for joining the team this year; please let us know if you would like to be a part of a future WB team...
Now before we get started, a few things to go over...
* If you cannot play, now is the time to let me know! We should be able to find a replacement if things have changed.
* Remember this is a speedy tournament (for PBEM). Time is of the essence. GMs are not going to track you down for orders each turn, they will just put out the results w whatever they have turned in. There is no Civil Disorder, so if you NMR, you are still in the game and can continue to play on! Never give up - never surrender!
* If you ever spot a problem with an adjudication, it is imperative that you bring it up quickly. There is a 24-hour hard cutoff for bringing up any issues in a game. Once 24 hours passes, the window to bring up any errors in the adjudication is closed, and things will stand as adjudicated. Also if you do raise a challenge, be able to respond readily to your email. In order to keep the games on track, we have to close any issues shortly after we open them.
* When submitting orders, be sure to copy orders(at)diplomaticcorp.com every submission. This can only help you, and failing to do so can only hurt you. 1) It is a backup, in case a GM cannot find your orders, to which we can look to see if something you sent just got lost. And 2) it is there for when a GM is not available and we, your moderators, have to cover a turn for them. In such cases, we will adjudicate with whatever orders we find were copied toorders(at)diplomaticcorp.com. If yours weren't, they will not be counted in those cases!
* Winter retreats and builds are combined into one turn, every Friday. Do not wait for retreats to turn in your builds, cuz once retreats come out, the build turn is done! If you're not sure if you'll get a build or not, (a retreat could alter the course) then turn something in, just in case. You can use conditionals, like "If he retreats here, build this, but otherwise build that."
* Each member has been subscribed to the Winter Blitz forum with a Weekly Digest. This means each Saturday, you should get an overall email summarizing all the adjudications and everything that went on the past week. If you *don't* want to receive this weekly email, you can adjust your subscriptions in your profile. Note any press or general interest stuff that you post to the Winter Blitz forum will go out to all 70 members and our administrators in that weekly digest. You can post two ways - either via email, to blitz(at)diplomaticcorp.com, or by visiting the site - but make sure you don't send your orders to the blitz forum!
Stay tuned, you should be hearing from your GM in the next day with your game starts. The tournament kicks off next Monday. I HIGHLY suggest that send in preliminaries immediately after receiving the email from your GM.
Enjoy,
-Garry B. and Mike S.[Reply] |
