dc410 adjudication time - catsfather   (Jan 18, 2012, 2:10 am)
Forgot to say, adjudications will take place at 6pm GMT ... which is why I'd be worrying at 5pm if I didn't have any orders from you.

Welcome to the tournament.  Sorry to the players for the very abrupt email I sent this (British) morning telling you the country you'd been assigned.  I wanted this done as soon as possible so that you could start plotting, but didn't have much time right then.

I expect you've had an email telling you the key points of the game, but let me repeat some and add some of my own:

1) Copy all order emails to orders(at)diplomaticcorp.com.  If I get hit by a bus then it's the orders that arrived at that box that'll be used by Mike, or Garry.  I live in Edinburgh, Scotland where we have this damned tram fiasco project changing traffic routing daily, so it's quite likely that I will be hit by a bus in the coming months.

2) I'd rather have five sets of orders from you than be sitting at 5pm (GMT) on a Monday worrying that I've had no orders from you.  Send me orders.  Then send me changed orders.  Then send the next set of changed orders...  Unless they're numbered, I'll assume that the order set that arrived last is the current order set.  If they're numbered then I'll assume that the highest number is the current order ... even if you've clearly sent the orders marked set 4 days after sending set 5 ... sorry, there has to be a rule.  If I get two sets of orders with a same number (or I get a set with no number) then its precedence against the same numbered emails, or (if not numbered, any emails) will be assigned by arrival time.

3) If I get in a set of orders that I don't understand then I'll do my best to point that out.  The more time between the orders arriving and the deadline increases the chance that I'll have looked at your orders and queried them ... see above.

4) Fall's retreats and the builds of Winter.  You have to order your
Winter builds (and disbandments) at the same time as others are ordering
the retreats from Fall.  You can include conditions: "if x retreats to y
then build a else build b".  I'll do my best to ask for clarification
if I thing your order is ambiguous, so get those orders in early ... see above.

5) If there's only one possible retreat then I'll assume that retreat is your order and send out the season's results including it.  You still have 24 hours to come back and say otherwise.  If you don't change the retreat order (to OTB) then the retreat that I assumed stands.

6) If there are any problem with anything (my adjudication, your ability to submit orders ... anything) then tell me as soon as possible and we'll try to fix it.  If I mess up an adjudication then raise it promptly.  You've 24-hours in which to complain.

7) Have fun.

Hamish

DC412 - Game Start - Corrino   (Jan 17, 2012, 10:49 pm)
Greetings, Gentlemen!  Welcome to the 2012 Winter Blitz Tournament!

If you're a repeat customer, glad to have you back.  If you're new to this event, congratulations!  You're going to have a great time.

My name is Chris Morse, and I have the honor of being your GM for the first round of play.  I know a couple of you already (Hi!) and am looking forward to getting know the rest of you over the course of the next 3 months or so.

Before we get to the country assignments, let's take care of the housekeeping.
1.  Here are the tournament rules.  Everything important is here:  http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/tournament.php?display=rules
2.  Deadlines.  One of
the key features of the Blitz is its hard-core schedule.  Did you see the schedule in the rules?  It was the first item.  Don't tell me you skipped reading the rules!  Uh, oh.  I hope we're not going to have a problem here.  Go back and read the rules.
3.  Deadlines (Part 2).  As the GM, I get to pick the time that orders are due.  I pick 6:00 Eastern Standard time.  I'm pretty sure that's 5 hours behind GMT.  Please get your orders in on time.  To be honest, I usually won't be adjudicating until 7:00 or 7:30.  You may submit orders up until the time I start adjudicating. If you send me orders and I've already started, I'll simply tell you it's too late.
4.  Addressing orders.  Send me your orders at camorse22(at)yahoo.com.  Please place the game number, country name, season and year
in the subject line.
GOOD:    DC412 - French orders Spring 1901
BAD:    France orders

GM'S Pet Peeve:     Lazy people who submit orders by hitting REPLY, so their retreats or Fall orders come in looking like this:  Re: DC412 - Spring 1901 Results
5.  Acknowledging orders.  I will ALWAYS acknowledge orders.  A-L-W-A-Y-S.  If you don't get an acknowledgment, I haven't seen your orders.  Double-check your addressing, and if there is any doubt, send them
again.
6.  The Blitz Orders mailbox.  When sending me orders, you should always copy the WB orders mailbox.  That's orders(at)diplomaticcorp.com.  This does two things for you:  (1)  If I lose your orders, or there is some glitch and I don't get your orders, the copy in the orders mailbox is proof that you submitted and you will avoid an NMR.  (2)  If something happens to me to prevent my adjudicating, the tournament director (TD) will use what is in this mailbox to adjudicate.  He's not going to wait for me to get out of the hospital so I can forward him your orders.  COPY THE BOX!
NOTE:  Orders sent to the mailbox and NOT your GM will not get you off the NMR hook.  This happened last year where a player sent to the wrong GM and the mailbox.  Read scenario (1) again.
The key point is that to prove you weren't at fault, the message in the blitz orders mailbox has to show that you did correctly send it to me.

7.  Reminders.  As those of you who have played with me know, I'm a huge care bear.  I will send reminders 95% of the time.  This is a courtesy, because I really don't like to see anyone miss a turn.  Of course, you know that my failing to send a reminder can never be used as an excuse for your orders to be late.
8.  Prelims.  Not required, but feel free to submit them if you like.  When the deadline hits, I'm going to use the most recent set you've sent me.

9.  Errors.  The next game I adjudicate perfectly will be the first one.  If you spot an error,
it is your job to let me know right away.  Never had one yet I couldn't fix, as long as it is brought to me attention promptly.

10.  Other correspondence.  Feel free to write to me with questions or comments about the game or the tournament.  I'm always interested in what's going on behind the scenes, too.  Players who include even the briefest explanations of what is going on in their heads are always appreciated by GM's.

NEXT PSEUDO-DEADLINE:  Please respond to this message immediately to confirm your contact information and your  participation in the tournament.  If something has come up and you need to drop out, better to do that now than after the game has begun.

FIRST GAME
DEADLINE:  Spring 1901 Orders are due Monday, January 23, at 18:00 EST.

COUNTRY ASSIGNMENTS:  Countries were assigned by random draw.  I interrupted my daughter reading "In Cold Blood" for English class and had her pick seven armies out of the virtual hat, with the order of the draw corresponding to the order of the player list as it was given to me below by the tournament directors.

DC412 - Game Start (Winter Blitz) Corrino Jan 19, 04:16 pm
Hello All,

It has now been almost 48 hours since I sent the game start message, and I have yet to hear from 3 of our 7 players.

Would the following players please respond to let me know you're alive and intent on participating in this game?

Joe Babinsack -- France
Ed Bailey -- Austria
Mick Cox -- Germany

I did have Joe's address wrong on the first message, but I fixed and re-sent it to him immediately.  Anyone who relied on my addressing and not the message text should double-check what they have for Joe.

Finally, the DC412 Game Page has been updated.  You can always check there for results, deadlines and other game info.  I typically post to the game page immediately AFTER I send out the results in email.

Thanks,
Chris

Welcome to the 2012 Winter Blitz.  I am Adam, your GM.  Pour yourself a cup of tea, dunk a couple of biscuits, make yourself at home, and... oh, don???t trust the gentlemen sitting to your right and left.  They want to kill you.  You mustn???t blame them; they think you want to kill them, too.  And who are we kidding?  You do, don???t you?  Of course you do.  You???ve heard of a zero-sum game, haven???t you?  Well, consider this a thirty-four-sum game.  By the way, you should try the cucumber sandwiches.  They???re delectable.  I???d recommend the curry, but you never know what poisons might be masked by such strong flavors.  Then again, I???d trust the curry before I???d trust the honey sweet words of the fellow across the table.  Before we start, I am afraid there are rather a lot of rules, cautions, disclaimers, provisos, and other administrative details. Please read carefully, as
the tight deadlines and tournament play necessitate an unusual degree
of strictness and correctitude.

Your game number is DC 409. Please include this in all email subject lines to avoid my spam filters. Also, please make sure that my emails avoid your spam filters. There is a web page for this game, its results, and its current status: www.diplomaticcorp.com/game_page.php?game_id=dc409.

Please email me after you finish reading this introduction. Include your Spring 1901 prelims.  [Note: I am an enthusiastic devotee of prelims.  They form a good habit.  Use them all the time.]  Also include your preference for the time of adjudications.  I will use 10:00 CST in the absence of other preferences.

RULES

The following rules govern DC 409. Items not covered below may be addressed on the Winter Blitz site (www.diplomaticcorp.com/tournament.php). Otherwise, DC House Rules apply.

SCHEDULING

The first deadline (S1901) will be Monday, January 23rd at 10:00 CST (16:00 GMT). Future deadlines will always be as follows:

Spring: Mondays
Spring Retreats: Tuesdays
Fall: Thursdays
Fall Retreats & Winter: Fridays

Because this is the Blitz, there will be no postponements. Note that Fall retreats and Winter adjustments are concurrent.  You may submit conditional orders for Winter (ex. ???Disband F GoB unless Germany retreats to Sweden, in which case, disband A Sev???).

EMAILS TO THE GM

My email address is smegdwarf(at)yahoo.com. I use email filters, so please include 409 in your email subject line. I will try to confirm receipt of all orders. I will not be correcting or notifying
you of mistakes in your orders. Usually I would provide this service, but this is a tournament game.

PLAYER ASSIGNMENTS

In accordance with Winter Blitz rules, you have no choice as to your country assignment. You probably have been tasked with Italy. I respectfully confess to finding your plight amusing.

DEADLINES

All deadlines will be 10:00 CST / 16:00 GMT (if this is inconvenient for players, I may change it). I may or may not send reminders.  Because this is a tournament (and a blitz tournament at that), there can be no undue accommodation on deadlines. If you are late, then you are late. Your units will NMR and be ordered to hold (or to disband in retreat or to waive a build???).  Most likely, your allies will turn on you due to a perceived unreliability.

Put succinctly: timeliness is the greatest virtue of a Winter Blitz champion. Your timeliness will cover a multitude (though by no means all) of your
other sins. As this is a Blitz game, I will not adjudicate early, except where all retreats are auto-retreats. I *will* accept orders after the deadline up until I start adjudicating (usually within a couple of hours of the stated deadline), but since you won???t know exactly when that is, you???re best served submitting final orders before the deadline.

CC: YOUR ORDERS:

You should copy ALL orders to: orders(at)diplomaticcorp.com. Next to timeliness, it???s the single most important thing you can do to succeed in this tournament.  There are two important reasons.  First, in the case of any dispute, your cc???d orders will be used by the tournament moderators to settle the issue.  Second, it may happen that I cannot personally adjudicate a season; if so, then the tournament moderators will adjudicate for me, and they will use your cc???d
orders.  [One point of clarification: to be valid, orders must be sent to me, your GM.  Orders sent only to the cc: address are not valid].

AUTO-RETREATS

Any unit that is forced to retreat with only one viable option will automatically be ordered to retreat thusly. This may sometimes lead to an early adjudication if all retreats are auto-retreats. If you would prefer to disband your auto-retreating unit, you must contact me by 1000 CST of the appropriate Tuesday/Friday. Preferably sooner.

PROTESTS

You have 24 hours to protest an adjudication. When the 1441st minute ticks away, you may no longer protest. Please direct your protest first to me. If I provide no satisfaction, then we can appeal it to a Moderator. Again, time is of the essence. Protests should be made rapidly.

PROXIES / REPLACEMENTS

If you cannot submit orders for one season, you may designate a proxy (who may NOT be another player in the
Winter Blitz) to submit orders on your behalf. I will need a rather explicit email from the player designating the proxy and providing contact information. Proxy orders are always overridden by player orders, even if the proxy orders were submitted after the player orders. Proxies must be renewed each game year.
DC does not provide replacements. So, if one of you must flake, please at least try to find a substitute player to take over your position. Otherwise, your country will fall into eternal NMRs, which spoils the game for everybody. Quite.

PLAYER ASSIGNMENTS

Now that all the unpleasant rules have been covered, may I please show you to your rooms?  The accommodations this year are modest but hopefully pleasing.  If you find you have any needs ??? you???ve forgotten your razor, or you require a sharp knife, or you???d like rifles for a hunting expedition, or you could use a really sturdy length of rope ??? do not hesitate
to contact me.  And, of course, there is always hot tea ready at your call.

MESSAGE:
The game picks back up and moves on.  There were two Russian retreats with only one spot to go each, so I took the liberty of retreating those units.  If Tim would like to pull either of those off the board, please let me know by Thursday morning.

There was a 4-way FART draw proposed.  Actually, it was proposed as AFRT, but again I took the liberty to switch those letters around.  So, please vote for teh FART draw with your Fall order submissions.  Many thanks for your votes and to the proposer.

I know that some of you may be playing in or administering the Winter Blitz.  I will try to allow for reasonable deadlines that fall off-cycle with those deadlines so you don't have too many in one day.  Let me know if anyone needs extra time during that competition.

The chairman (GM) does not accept the motion to amend the proposal to a RAFT draw, as the gentleman was not granted the floor at the time of his proposal.  The FART proposal stands.  Please vote YAY or NAY with your Fall orders.  A failure to vote counts as a NAY vote (as the result of the vote would not be unanimous amongst all players remaining).

dc395 Autumn 1908 retreats; builds due 1500GMT tom... - jerome777   (Jan 17, 2012, 2:59 pm)
Hi everyone, Here's your Autumn 1908 retreats: England:
A Paris - Burgundy Germany:
A Munich - Tyrolia Russia:
F Norway - St Petersburg(nc)
F Sweden - Baltic Sea The following builds and disbands are due: Austria:   Supp  4 Unit  3 Build  1
England:   Supp  8 Unit  6 Build  2
France:    Supp  2 Unit  2 Build  0
Germany:   Supp  3 Unit  3 Build  0
Italy:     Supp  4 Unit  4 Build  0
Russia:    Supp  7 Unit  8 Remove  1
Turkey:    Supp  6 Unit  4
Build  1
I'm going to need to bring the build/disband deadline forwards a bit, I'm away from home on business Wednesday evening (I'm off to Edinburgh, I can't wait, Edinburgh has to be one of the most remarkable and fun cities there is!) The build/disband deadline will be 1500GMT Wednesday 18 January - six hours earlier than usual. If you miss the deadline, then a no-build-received will happen - and if there are any disbands, I'll adjudicate them in line with the dc house rules - you've been warned! However, I will adjudicate as soon as I get the full set. There is a draw proposal to be voted upon. The suggestion is for a three-way ERI draw. Please do insert your votes within your Spring 09 orders - remember, all seven of you need to vote in favour for the three-way draw to pass. Spring 09 is due Monday 23 January 2100GMT. Finally, I'm now involved in
several games with the advent of the Winter Blitz tournament. I'm maybe not going to be able to be as liberal with sending out lots of reminders to you all to get your orders in on time, so if you want to avoid the dreaded NMR, then I suggest you submit preliminary orders in good time. Also, unless you want insults to be thrown at you from my direction, please ensure you put 'dc395' into the subject bar of emails you send me. I'll tell Santa if you don't! Keep it chilled, Jerome

Subject: DC 409: Winter Blitz 2012, Round 1

Before we start, I am afraid there are rather a lot of
rules, cautions, disclaimers, provisos, and other administrative details. Please read carefully, as the tight deadlines and tournament play necessitate an unusual degree
of strictness and correctitude.

Items not covered below may be addressed on the Winter Blitz site
(www.diplomaticcorp.com/tournament.php).

I will not be correcting or notifying you of mistakes in your orders. Usually I would provide
this service, but this is a tournament game.

Your timeliness will cover a multitude (though by no means all) of your other sins. As this is a Blitz game, I will not
adjudicate early, except where all retreats are auto-retreats.

Second, it may happen that I cannot personally adjudicate a season; if so, then the tournament moderators will adjudicate for me, and they will use your cc???d orders.  [One point of clarification: to be
valid, orders must be sent to me, your GM.

If you cannot submit orders for one season, you may designate a proxy (who may NOT be another player in the Winter Blitz) to submit orders on your behalf. I
will need a rather explicit email from the player designating the proxy and providing contact information.

If you find you have any needs ??? you???ve forgotten your razor, or you require a sharp knife, or you???d like rifles for a hunting expedition, or you could use a really sturdy length of rope ??? do not hesitate to contact me.  And, of course, there is
always hot tea ready at your call.

If you cannot submit orders for one season, you may designate a proxy (who may NOT be another player in the Winter Blitz) to submit orders on your behalf. I
will need a rather explicit email from the player designating the proxy and providing contact information.

If you find you have any needs ??? you???ve forgotten your razor, or you require a sharp knife, or you???d like rifles for a hunting expedition, or you could use a really sturdy length of rope ??? do not hesitate to contact me.  And, of course, there is
always hot tea ready at your call.

Subject: DC 409: Winter Blitz 2012, Round 1

I kind of like it.... arctic that is. I suppose you could make it impassable in the spring... you can only move in or out of it in the fall?  Heh, but then if the game goes past 2020 it becomes passable all year.

I'm only joking, please don't take this seriously  Smile

Except the part about liking the way arctic ocean is set up.

Thanks for the comments about the Arctic Ocean.  It has been split up in the past, but this was done to try to give players more options and quick travel.  Perhaps I need to re-jig the bordering territories so there aren't so many options... ah well, we're stuck with it for now.

I agree, although it is kind of Anthony to offer to play out the position, let's find someone who truly wants to be part of the tournament.

I'd vote for finding a replacement this early.  No plans are set so it should be easy to find a new Russia.  Thanks for the heads up.  Also, I didn't see Turkey's info below.

Hi,

I'm Christine, I've been involved with online Diplomacy for quite a few years.  I've mostly retired from playing but still like to keep my hand in by GMing a game or two. Most of your names are new to me, I look forward to getting to know you all. Please respond to this email so i know I have everyone's email correctly on my mailing list.

If you choose to scroll down to the bottom to read the player list don't forget to come back at some point and read the official type stuff here at the beginning.

Deadlines will be 8 AM CST  GMT -6  1400 GMT.  I normally start adjudicating at the posted deadline.

A quick rundown of the tournament timing:

This is a fast paced game with short turn around.

Spring deadlines will occur every Monday. Fall deadlines will occur every Thursday, 3 days later.

Retreats and/or Builds will always be due the day after results are out. That is Tuesday for Summer Retreats and Friday Retreats, Builds & Disbands.  Autumn Retreats will always be due at the same time as the Winter Adjustments.

There will be NO delays or extensions.

I may adjudicate early if all orders are received marked final ( this mainly applies to the adjustment phases).

While I try not to make mistakes, If at any time you find an error or dispute an adjudication you must contact me ASAP.  If any turn passes and there is an error on the board, we play on ??? players have 24 hours from the posting of any adjudication to contest the adjudication.

Email Address:

My email is dawench(at)hotmail.com  send all orders to this address.

DC404 1903 Spring Results - RickHunter   (Jan 16, 2012, 4:46 pm)
Spring 1903 results look eerily similar before and after.  Due to lots of supports, cutting of supports, and an order to the wrong country only 3 units move locations.  Here's to hoping all your dreams come true in Fall.  Of course for Austria, holding off 3 powers at once is already a pretty good dream turn.  Way to go Archduke!

No retreats - Fall 1903 due by 1/23/12 5pm ET.

DC 398, Notice - alwayshunted   (Jan 16, 2012, 4:13 pm)
Hi guys,

Sorry, slipped out of existence there briefly. So, I still do not have a full set of orders for the fall of 1904. If it was only one set missing I might just go ahead and run it... but it's not. So I'm going to wait until tomorrow, almost 25 hours from now. Please send in orders for the sake of those that are making an effort to do so.
