DC379 - Winter Blitz - Airring the Issues - FuzzyLogic   (May 30, 2011, 5:12 pm)
Guys, it looks to me like the main issue here is the miscoloration of
Rumania. Brian is human, errors are inevitable. Even tho it was
miscolored, it did not change the builds due at the time. (all the text
results were correct). Since nobody noticed it then, I guess ppl just
didn't look closely at the map. Maybe Turkey would have ordered
differently (not to Rumania?) if he knew Rumania was not his, but really
it is the players' responsibility to assess the results and correct
anything wrong w/in 24 hours. If that didn't happen, we move on. This
is the Blitz -- We roll w the punches and the tournament keeps moving.
You can't report something was wrong in a map from over a week ago in a
tournament and have time be rewound.
Note the Mon/23 due date was obviously wrong, builds have been due on
every Friday since January - builds are clearly not due on a Monday --
in the past even.
Regarding the GM, there is no change. Brian has done an awesome job as
a first-time Blitz GM, and his efforts are hugely appreciated! If
anyone else would like to volunteer to be part of our team for next
year, let Garry or myself know. Smile
No doubt there are definite preferences out there regarding human GMs vs
Judge systems. Some like one, some like the other. Our group has been
a play-by-email community for 10 years and I don't think we'll ever go
to judge play.
Let's move on. Results as Brian has posted them. Next turn is due
Thursday! If you all want to vote for a draw, you can propose such w/in
the normal confines of the game, per the WB rules page... that is, you
can vote on a draw with your fall orders, but be sure to send orders too
since if the draw doesn't pass then the orders submitted are processed
with no extra time.

Hey everyone:
I am copying Garry and Mike the tournament directors. Garry has
played with me as GM before so should have a little understanding of
how I GM. As a personal preference, I don't like how RealPolitik
colors the maps, so I color them by hand. This has led to a bit of a
problem.
Just to bring everyone up to date. DancingQueen, feel free to correct
me if I leave anything out. Over the course of the game, I have made
several mistakes with my adjudications and when they were brought to
my attention, I made the corrections quickly and believe they were
resolved to everyone's satisfaction, up until Winter 1908. When I
published the Winter 1908 map, I mis-colored Rumania as belonging to
Turkey rather than Austria, the SC counts however were correct,
Austria and Turkey each had the correct # of SCs and builds/removals.
No one including myself caught the mistake until After Fall 1909
adjudication. For the Fall 1909 Adjudication, I published the
builds/removals and DancingQueen questioned why he had 3 builds rather
than the 2 he was expecting when he moved to Rumania (thinking he was
moving to a territory he already owned). It was at this point that I
realized my mistake, and sent a message to everyone. Also in the Fall
1909 Adjudication, I incorrectly pubished the next deadline as Monday,
May 23rd, rather than Friday May 27th.
After the Winter 1909 Adjudication, I received a message from Dancing
Queen complaining about the incorrect deadline date. I apologized for
the mistake, but pointed out that the dates are always Spring on
Monday, Retreats on Tuesday, Fall on Thursday, and Retreat/Builds on
Friday.
Dancing Queen responded this morning expressing his displeasure with
how I have been GMing the game. All of which can be seen here as
posted to the Forum:
http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/forumPost.php?post=20782.
So that all said, I understand I made a mistake and said as much on
Friday, but really it should have been caught. As far as the deadline
goes, I would think that everyone should know by now, especially in
Year 1909 of the second game of the tournament that the deadlines are
set in stone. I have no control over them and include them as a
courtesy in my emails. If Mike and Garry would like to replace me as
GM, I will respect their opinion and gladly hand over the reins. I
will be publishing the results of Spring 1910 shortly and await the
decision of the Tournament Directors.

Hi all,

Well I think out Turkey has played an exceptional game, I'd like to respectfully disagree with his assessment of our GM.

This is an incredibly hard tourney to Gm (I've tried, once), given the amount of flexibility in the deadlines (none). Its
alsoan incredibly difficult tourney to run and staff with volunteers.

Mistakes are bound to happen. This is a game after all.

Let's focus on the positive outcome: a very well fought game with LOT'S of twists and turns. The outcome is no longer in doubt, but for much of the game, it was.

Let's end it now with a T/A win...

Hi Gareth,

Let me try to run through your points -- and no worries, I think talking about stuff is a good course of action.  Perhaps I am out of line, I often am.  I had a lot of time to think about this, though, and I don't think so in this case.

I do value the time of human GMs - it is why I haven't said anything until now.  But a volunteer who can't do the gig should either not volunteer or should ask to be replaced.

I would have replied sooner, but I didn't have access to a keyboard until this morning.  I replied to the GM immediately, but didn't appeal immediately, because the deadline published in the report wasn't until Monday.   If you will recall, I did immediately point out to  our GM that I didn't believe I should be building 3 - I put that in when I sent in my preliminary builds, which I did despite being on the road without access to a computer.

Of course the dot count can be fixed between Austria and myself, if everything else were equal.  Everything else is not equal.

Putting it all on the table, then -- I made peace with Austria, he took a big chance walking away from me, and I promised we would take it to a 2 way draw.  Since he and I went through several rounds of typical diplomacy - lying, misleading, what have you - it was very important, in this particular turn, that there be no impression of hijinx.

Jim got a copy of my orders - the ones that included the move to Rumania - and I got a copy of his - which included his fleet holding in Venice, not for nothing, and I can't ask if our GM got that wrong, because they aren't MY orders, but given the fact that I clearly can't trust his reports, I do wonder - and neither Jim nor I saw anything wrong with them.

So the diplomatic situation is screwed up, because the GM, who should be an invisible stage manager, screwed up for more than 4 seasons.   It isn't the first time the map has reflected the wrong information, either - which speaks to the players responsibility to double check everything, if I want to be completely fair.

I can (will, do) also propose a 2 way Austria / Turkey draw, which is I think the result we were headed towards.

Regarding NMRs, its another reason to not play internet diplomacy.  Smile  I think the equation between players failing to turn in orders (which, barring life, is a matter of 5 minutes time, and yes, sometimes that is prevented) and GMs failing to make sure they get the adjudication correct, are two different matters entirely.  It is why the automated judges were coded in the first place.

Hi Chris,

I don't know why this is being blown out of proportion. Perhaps I'm
not in possession of all of the facts. If you took Rumania by
mistake because of the map then it seems Austria can be given Naples
of Greece in return quite simply (is that fleet really doing
anything? Of course it'd have been different had Austria been forced
to disband the fleet but since Austria NMR'd anyway...). But here
are my thoughts:

1. No-one is infallible, and it states in the rules that any errors
should be reported within 24 hours of an adjudication. Yes, the GM
should not have got this wrong, but why did you not pick up on it
until now?

2. If the situation were more serious (i.e. it would influence the
outcome of the game) then there'd be a reason to be annoyed, but as
I see it, you and Austria have the game wrapped up pretty neatly (or
you could go for the solo if you choose).

3. GMs volunteer their - valuable - time to adjudicate these games
for us all, and I think we should be a little more grateful.

4. This is a fast paced game with 2-4 adjudications per week.
Sometimes I find it difficult to find the time to get my orders in,
so adjudicating is going to be harder to squeeze in. Now I know that
you haven't NMR'd this game Chris, but others have, and those NMR's
have helped you perhaps more than anyone else. If we were to replace
the GM, why not replace players for NMR'ing?

5. I will agree to a DIAS if that's the will of the group, but do
not think it's very sporting.

If the above seems like I'm having a go, I'm honestly not, simply
questioning some things from your last mail that seem - to me - to
be out of order.

5. I will agree to a DIAS if that's the will of the group, but do
not think it's very sporting.

If the above seems like I'm having a go, I'm honestly not, simply
questioning some things from your last mail that seem - to me - to
be out of order.

dc384 Two new Powers saught - jerome777   (May 30, 2011, 7:49 am)
Hi everyone,

Unfortunately Sean (Russia) has had to drop out of our game, due to some pretty serious personal issues that are going to need to occupy his spare time. Therefore we're now in a position of needing two replacement players to fill up our board.

I've posted messages in the Light Brigade section of the dc website, and we'll see what kind of response those messages get. In the meantime, I'll keep you all posted as best I can with news on our game.

Best,

Hi everyone,

Yes, it's me again! Another opening has now appeared in the dc384 game, this time for Russia. Russia is in an eminently playable condition, and a commission in the Light Brigade awaits whomever is willing to take up the mantle with this Power.

Standard rules, one major season per week (deadlines 2000GMT Sunday evenings).

If you've any questions, please shout.

OK so I've found a new Russia, unsurprisingly it wasn't too difficult as Russia is in a pretty good position. Still looking for a new Turkey, however - so if you fancy playing the Sultan, please give me a shout!

Hi everyone,

The opportunity you've always wanted to come and be a replacement in a good ol' standard game of Dip has arrived!

Yes, that's right! Come and join in a game with us all - a commission in the Light Brigade awaits you. A chance to take over a reasonable position as Turkey in dc384 has arisen, just send me an email if you'd like to take over the position and I'll put you in there. It's first-come-first-served, so don't delay, join up today!

Hi everyone,

Apologies for the late adjudication of the game this season. I had a minor emergency to deal with last night, so thanks for your patience.

Unfortunately we've two NMRs this season, despite several reminders sent to the players concerned asking them to submit their moves. So, we need to wave 'goodbye' to one player - thanks for playing Vinnie - and I'll search for a replacement to take over Vinnie's role.

In the meantime, we've one retreat needed from England, so Luke - please let me know what you'd like to do with your NTH fleet as soon as possible. The deadline for this retreat ought to be 2000GMT tonight, but given my lateness in adjudicating this move I'll stretch this to 0800GMT tomorrow (Tuesday 31 May). Having said this, if you can let me know your retreat sooner, I'll adjudicate as soon as possible.

I'm going to begin the search for a new Turkey now. Once a new Turkey is appointed, I'll give an extended deadline to you all to allow Diplomacy with the new player, and give him/her a chance to get to know you all. If I can appoint a new Turkey before Sunday 5 June, the deadline for Autumn 03 moves will be Sunday 13 June 2000GMT.

The deadline is just over 22 hours away for dc384. The deadline for your Spring 1903 moves is 2000GMT Sunday 29 May.

I'm sure we are all hoping for no NMRs (no moves received) this turn, though you should all be aware that two consecutive NMRs will result in a replacement player being sought for your Power.
