All-

I would like to make a proposal. As you all see, Russia NMRed on this first turn. However, if it is at all possible, I believe that we should restart the game. My reasoning is this:

Initially, we were told that the deadline was on August 8th. Today is August 5th. This morning, I received an email from the Stuart (the GM) saying I had less than 12 hours to submit my moves. Russia also received this message. It is entirely possible that Russia hasn't had a chance to log in to his email today and simply did not receive the warning. It is possible he thought that the deadline was still 3 days away. Having received messages from him in the past, I know he is active and playing. It would be wrong to screw him over so badly simply because of a mistake on the deadline on the part of the GM. Therefore, I propose we start over and redo the first turn. If necessary we can reallocate the countries, but that might just be too much of a hassle.

Stuart, is this possible?

Sincerely,

Rob Draniczarek

(DC 326) Gumball - Spring 1907 Results - Corrino   (Aug 04, 2010, 9:06 pm)
Hi Players,

Here we are starting our seventh year.  Do you know that I've seen gunboat games in which someone has soloed in 1907?  I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that that isn't going to happen here in Gumball.  Too many sticky situations.  Too many blown opportunities.  Too many bubbles bursting in people's faces.  (Are you following my drift?  I hope so.  I'm running out of subtle here.)

Common wisdom often says that you play for position in the Spring and dots in the Fall.  I'd say that pretty well describes our moves this season.  At least, it describes our attempted moves.  Successful in a couple cases (Germany into Galicia, Austria into Tyrolia) and unsuccessful in a few more (Germany blocked from
Yorkshire, Italy blocked from MAO and Constantinople).

I also note that we're still seeing folks trying to help other folks, but finding it difficult to make the connection.  Will they try again, or are will they turn to other options?  Love unrequited only lasts so long, you know.

RETREAT NEEDED:  Austria army Galicia may retreat to Budapest, Warsaw or off the board.  Please get that retreat in to me within the next 24 hours.

NEXT DEADLINE:  Fall 1907 is due next Wednesday, August 11, at 8 pm Eastern US time.

Cheers,
Chris

There are two retreats (all neutral units are disbanded) and plenty of builds this year, as you will see below. Also, a Polish-Turkish draw has been proposed. Only YES votes will be counted affirmatively, and the vote must be unanimous to pass. Upcoming deadlines are at the end of this note.

Suez falls to surging Turks; middle east holdings now tenuous

Guillotine being prepared for terrified French leader
Swap of Austria for Belgium not likely to please traditionalists Italian military genius in evidence seemingly everywhere
Poles conquer Leningrad and advance in the Balkans, but suffer disaster in the the Ukraine

Aid to beleaguered Soviets punctuates new conquests
Fall of Leningrad has Soviet military leadership again uneasy
Republicans conquer Burgos, win the Spanish Civil War! Nationalists aid Italian interests before dispersing for their homes

Now, for some player press:

***
Italian Press:
Franco regrets to announce that his forces have had a vote and decided to disperse into the French countryside. The food and wine of France are infinitely superior to that of Spain, and so he will be joining them. While he is sorry to have abandoned the Spanish people to the reign of communists, who no doubt will start doing foolish things - like helping those in poverty - he is sure that Spain will eventually emerge from this darkness and the people will stand up for real action and then move forward. Something like that, at any rate. Franco's last message to his people - as best as this correspondent can gather - is: 'This cheese is all right, hey? Pass me another bottle of the red, Mola.'

***
Turkish Press:
November 10 of this year, our dear leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk died after struggling with cirrhosis. This tragedy has shaken the Turkish Republic to the core and will undoubtedly effect the military which he so selflessly loved. On the leader's deathbed, he emphasised how much he enjoyed his tough negotiations with Jozef Stalin after their Caucasian. It is because of this and not any anti-Polish sentiment that the Black Sea fleet of the proud Türk Deniz Kuvvetleri will support the Soviet cause. Istanbul wishes that Warsaw would view this action as purely symbolic of the friendship between these two great leaders and not as some declaration of war. We are a friend to all that share our borders.
Very soon we will be notifying the world of our change in government. We hope to have this change confirmed by Spring of next year and will share our new foreign policy at that time.

Something like that, at any rate. Franco's last message to his people - as best as this correspondent can gather - is: 'This cheese is all right, hey? Pass me another bottle of the red, Mola.'

(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - Fall 1913 Results - Corrino   (Aug 03, 2010, 7:24 pm)
Two mighty stabs in the dark!

Two supply centers are taken!!

Two  players both feel a mixture of elation and dread.  Is it over?!

England overpowers the Turkish army holding Munich, but is unable to maintain control of Berlin.  It's an even swap, and our two wicked witches are still dead even at 17 dots apiece.

The line to the south tested thoroughly from both directions and is looking pretty solid.  The line to the north... well, we don't really know.  Haven't seen any conflict north of Germany in many a year.

What happens now?  Why, we roll the calendar ahead to another year and do it all over again.

RETREATS:  None.

ADJUSTMENTS:  Can't say, but if there are any they are due with the Spring 1914 orders.

NEXT DEADLINE:  Spring 1914 is due on Friday, August 6, at 8 pm Eastern US time.  If I have finals by Thursday night, I'll put out the adjudication a day early.

Individual Fall/Autumn reports will be follow immediately.

Cheers,
Chris

DC327 - Spring 05 adjudication - bielf11   (Aug 03, 2010, 4:46 pm)
New war reports have come in that shine a different light on what happened in Corinth.
Apparently the armies that met in Corinth are both Arcolian. This confirms the theory that Arcolia was just trying to keep other forces out of Corinth. It doesn't change the outcome for Pellae though as the returning Arcolian army was denied access to its camp.

No, I wouldn't say surprised... more like disappointed.  I guess then the DMZ is off in Corith... I'll be sailing there immediately.

DC327 - Spring 05 adjudication - bielf11   (Aug 03, 2010, 4:21 pm)
Spring 05: Aetolia surprises the Arcolian army who, while returning from their failed attempt to take Corinth, find their return to Pellae blocked.
The Attican fleet with the support from Arcolia force the Messenians out of Pylos.
Elia is denied access to the beautiful island of Ithaca where it is said that Odysseus was born and returned after his dreadful journey from Troy.
And the Boeotians in Marathon make a desperate dash at Athenae. Hence the word Marathon in today's vocabulary Wink

dc330: Fa38 - rules clarification - dknemeyer   (Aug 03, 2010, 9:21 am)
Folks,
I've gotten a question about DP's: now that there are two (and soon,
potentially less) neutrals left alive, do we need to adhere to the
rule of spending no more than 2 DP on influencing any one power? The
answer is YES: the basic rules around DP persist even if there is only
one neutral left. 2 DP maximum spend per neutral.
Less than 7 short hours before deadline! Tick, tick, tick...

Welcome Chris and Bruce to the ranks of the veteran players of diplomaticcorp!

Chris joins us as our new intern -- the Initiate Knight, while long-time member Bruce surges ahead to Knight Tactician, skipping to the highest of Knight levels...

Other advancements:

Warren and Jason trade in their Parchment for the Raven, beginning the long climb thru the Orders.

Alan and Fredrik gain some stature as Knight Captains

Ben and Darryl give up their intern status to become Knight Errants.  (Can Chris possibly fill the role of these two by himself?)
