(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - Fall 1911 Results - Corrino (Jul 20, 2010, 8:16 pm) |
Hey Stabbers!
You can leave that fez on the shelf a little longer. The Turkish hordes have been stopped... for now. I can't tell you the exact standings until after the retreats are processed, but suffice to say that neither the Turks nor anyone else made it to 18 SC this year.
What is most fascinating is not just that England knocked two Turkish armies off of their dots, but that neither of those dislodged units was supported. Furthermore, those are the only two Turkish units that reveal themselves at all! What's up with that? Seventeen units (we assume) and only TWO have their whereabouts known?! Should we be wondering whether our Sultan was suffering from overconfidence? Or perhaps it is just the opposite, and our Ottoman Lord is
beset by nagging doubts and a paralysis of spirit on the very eve of a great triumph?
Hey, all I can say is there's no room for faint hearts at this party! If the Sultan does not claim the continent then the English king will surely do so himself. Whether we see them or not, we know there are many mighty forces at large in the dark on both sides. None may yet turn home to rest. None may yet relax their watch. Play on!
RETREATS NEEDED: Turkish army Marseilles. Turkish army Berlin.
AUTUMN REPORTS will be sent out tomorrow night, or maybe sooner, if the Sultan is prompt.
Cheers,
Chris
Orders as resolved and revealed:

(DC 326) Gumball - Replacement England sought - Corrino (Jul 20, 2010, 8:09 am) |
Hi Gumballers,
I still have no orders or any other contact from our missing English king. I believe he was last seen chasing American divorcees around the grounds of Balmoral.
So... we wait. I have submitted the "paperwork" to get us a replacement. Hopefully it won't take too long.
I will set a new deadline once we have the new player BUT... what are you folks waiting for? Turn in your orders now and beat the rush! It's not like you have to wait to swap messages with the new guy. He or she will be just another faceless antagonist, trying to take what is rightfully YOURS. Are you going to stand for that?! Of course not. Send me your orders!
Cheers,
Chris
p.s. If the wayward English king should see this message and contact me immediately, expressing sufficient humility and contrition (and sending ORDERS!), I expect we could move past this faux pas and give him a second chance.

Fall 1902 Adjudication - cfisher6 (Jul 19, 2010, 8:32 pm) |
Whoops, forgot the maps! Here they are.
2010/7/20 Christopher Fisher <fisher.chrisw(at)gmail.com>
The tide of battle in Europe swings violently back and forth. In the East it appears the Ottoman aggression against Russia in the Sring was a decoy, as the army in Armenia undertakes another surprising convoy to reinforce Turkey's Balkan presence. Meanwhile the troops who had recently entered Greece crossed the Austrian border into Serbia. Russian forces in the North capitalized on German and French military actions against England in order to seize the Scandinavian region of Norway, while the Czar's homeland defences fended off an Austrian push into the Ukraine. In the West the forces of France retreated from the German region of the Ruhr while attempting to form a blockade of England with several fleets. At the same time troops from Italy crossed the French border at Marseilles but were repelled by elements of the Iberian army returning from Spain.
There are two retreats this phase, due Wednesday at 23:59. Normally I could speed up the adjudication but right now it's the summer months and we have a player on vacation until Friday. Due to that the Winter adjudications won't be due until later this weekend. This player let me know in advance he would be absent and I want to reiterate if you're aware of vacation plans or other events that will prevent you from accessing email, please let me know prior to the moment--I understand the summer is full of vacations and am pretty lenient on absences with advance notice (one of the benefits of human GMs!)
On an unrelated note, does anyone know what is the correct English spelling of Czar/Tsar/Tzar/Csar/Szar?

Chris,
Some useless information:
Per your question "does anyone know what is the correct English spelling of Czar/Tsar/Tzar/Csar/Szar?" I have an answer for you. Though, as we all know, Al Gore actually invented the internet for porn, one can find nearly-useful stuff out there. For example:
from the free dictionaries out there:
"Usage Note: The word czar can also be spelled tsar. Czar is the most common form in American usage and the one nearly always employed in the extended senses "any tyrant" or informally, "one in authority." But tsar is preferred by most scholars of Slavic studies as a more accurate transliteration of the Russian and is often found in scholarly writing with reference to one of the Russian emperors."
Given not everyone playing is American, and the use is directed toward the historical ruler (real or imagined) of Russia not say an American with real or imagined power such as a drug Czar (Lindsey Lohan for example), I say you go with the original Tsar. Unfortunately this does not really answer your literal question of "correct "English" spelling" ---as the English did not invent the internet and I am not sure how it is done across the pond. Go with the Russkies - Tsar.

Completely my fault and I am late to boot.
I failed to mention that Germany would have a build available if they retreated OTB. That has in fact happened. Thus we will have a Autumn turn here with the results from the retreats:
A Gal retreats OTBA StP retreats to Moscow
As such, we now need a Russian disband and an English and German build. Please submit those by Saturday if possible (but I will not adjudicate until after the weekend if those are not received because of MY mistake).
I have English and Russian orders already. If Tim and Sean could confirm that those still stand and are FINAL that would be great. Sorry for the oversight. I should have caught that a German OTB would yield a build.

All,Sorry for the slight delay. We have two retreats needed:
A StP can retreat to Lvn, Mos or OTB.A Gal can retreat to Ukr or OTB.
We will only have two adjustments. It will be a build for England and a removal for Russia (unless StP retreats OTB). Since it is HIGHLY unlikely that the English build is contingent on the Russian or German retreat, let's do an retreat and adjustment phase simultaneously. Let's have those due Tuesday the 13th at 6pm CST.

Hi Players,
Armies come (for Austria and Germany) and armies go (for Russia and England). In fact, R and E both failed to submit adjustment orders so the DC house rules come into effect and thus the units furthest from home are removed. A very easy calculation in both cases.
Here is a link to the rules, just in case you're interested: http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/info.php?type=houserules
The results:
Austria:
Build A Budapest
Build A Trieste
England: (NMR)
Remove A St Petersburg
Germany:
Build A Berlin
Russia: (NMR)
Remove A Piedmont
NEXT DEADLINE FOR ENGLAND: Monday, July 19, at 8 pm
Eastern US time. If I do not have English orders for Spring 1906 by this time I will seek a replacement.
NEXT DEADLINE FOR EVERYONE ELSE: Spring 1906 orders are due Wednesday, July 21, at 8 pm Eastern US time.
Cheers,

Mike, Christine, Dan, Hamish, Dirk,
As I told Mike Thursday morning, real life has reared its ugly head,
now more than even I expected yesterday. As such I simply will not
have time for this game. As all of you know it bothers me to end a
game by any vote other than DIAS, and I only support DIAS when everyone
simply has lost the weill to keep playing due to NMRs or such. That is
definitely not the case in this excellent contest. I like to play
games until their logical conclusion (either a forced draw or a solo),
and there is still a LOT, a very lot, of play left in this game.
Either a German solo or a forced three way AEG are the most likely
results if it was to be plasyede out. Unfortunastely, I simply nop
longer will have any time to devote to plsaying it out. All three
other players for some time now have said--repeatedly--that they want a
three way AEG by vote. I have been the (apparently lone) naysayer
since I'd really like to play this out, even though it is very unlikely
I could get any better result. And I hate to have Mike's tourney end
this way, especially since Dirk apparenly has a shot ast winning the
whole thing. But I have no choice. So I'm now acceptinmg the AEG that
I've been berated to vote for if it currently is on the table. If it
is not, then I propose the AEG three way myself and vote for it. Its
been a good game guys, I hope to meet all of you in the future. I've
had fun. I hope you have. And I'm sorry to have to scuttle off this
way.

Hi Ray,
I hope the real-life demands for your attention are not particularly
bad, sad or painful.
I will indeed vote for the 3-way as advertised. Barring something
unusual and bizarre - or this being your biggest manipulation yet! -
it appears we've finished this out.
I agree this has been an excellent game but, insofar as my tournament
result goes, I can honestly say I wish I had been put in with some
softer touches.

dc311 - The winter that never was - raybrucea (Jul 16, 2010, 9:25 pm) |
And I'm sorry to have to scuttle off this
way.
Ray

Subject: dc311 - The winter that never was
With Fall 17 results we have ourselves another draw??that fails to
pass??and a winter that may never be!
Is it global warming, or just crafty Diplomacy...
??
We do have two retreats, but Austrian A Bud can only go to Tri and
German A Tyr can only go to Boh.?? After enacting both of these
retreats, there's simply nothing left to do this winter.?? If either
power wishes to go OTB and build something else instead, you may do so
by tomorrow 3pm Central, but if the status quo is fine then we just
move along to Spring 18... Due Monday!?? 3pm Central.
