And then there
were 12...
That's right, today we bid
our fondest Haven "better you than me" farewell to the Wizards... As
their mystical powers helped them, well, about as much as it helped the
Magicians.
The Elves survive (barely),
the Undead have a "bet ya dont wanna be an Undead too" sort of turn,
and the Ogres pull off, for the first time in Haven history, having entered the
caverns at one end and surfaced at the opposite end of the map
-- breaking out into the Dragons Teeth Mountains.
Lots of adjustments, due
Friday! July 2, 3pm Central... I want to get them done by Fri, cuz
then lots of ppl will probly check out thru the long weekend in the US…

(DC 326) Gumball - Fall 1904 Results - Corrino (Jun 30, 2010, 8:38 pm) |
Hey Gumballers,
I have to say that didn't quite live up to the promise of the Spring turn. Seems like in Spring all the attackers guessed right, and this time it was the defenders. Naturally a good GM such as myself values chaos above all else, so you can see where I might be a little disappointed. Not that it was a bad year. We had:
. Turkey taking Sevastopol from Russia.
. Russia taking Rumania from Turkey.
. England taking St. Petersburg from Russia.
. Germany taking Denmark from England.
. Italy taking Smyrna from Turkey.
. Austria taking Venice from Italy.
. ... and France in the corner twiddling his thumbs. C'mon Froggie, baby, you gotta get with the scene!
RETREATS: None. Isn't that nice? No one likes
to retreat. Now we can move straight to...
ADJUSTMENTS: Due tomorrow. That's Thursday, July 1, at 8 pm Eastern US time. I'm going on vacation Friday morning, so I'm telling ya those orders better be here on time!
Ownership:
Austria: Budapest, Bulgaria, Serbia, Trieste, Venice, Vienna.
England: Edinburgh, Liverpool, London, Norway, St Petersburg, Sweden.
France: Brest, Marseilles, Paris, Portugal, Spain.

Thanks Mike. I am absolutely stoned right now...
Percocet and Methocarbomal - the other upside is that the agonizing pain in my
hip and back is a fuzzy memory.

Hey All,
Blue hurt himself and is drugged up. As a result he's asked for a delay. He
asked for 48 hours, but that would put the deadline on a Saturday, which I'd
like to avoid. Let's go with Monday July 5th at 9 pm.
Blue, recover quickly!
Best,
Mike

Ladies and Gentlemen -
Between planning for my departure to annual training at the end of this week and the 4th of July vacations here in America, I was rushing through the adjudication, and realize I made a foolish error. I set a winter deadline, without realizing that no adjustments are due this season! So the Thursday July 8th deadline for Spring 1575 stands. I will be departing for my annual training this Sunday, and will touch base and set the Fall deadline when I arrive and confirm that I will have reliable net access as expected.
Sorry for the delay -

Don't normally comment on other people's EOGs, and I'll keep most of my comments between me and Mike, but I really hate it when people guess what other people did or didn't do. Guessing "Why" a move is made (or not) is fine, but guessing about private votes is ridiculous!
Mike, I stated plain and clear in my EOG that I voted YES to every single DIAS vote. I'd go so far as ask Garry to confirm this... even though I know he won't. But I'd even be happy to post my last 6 seasons of "moves rec'vd" emails showing my votes. So let's stop the finger-pointing and hope that the person who actually was voting NO will have the guts to step up in their EOG.

standard. So much could have happened yet.
Taking
it from the start...
Things
went pretty well in opening negotiations. The original 4-way was
TRUA. Trolls, Rogues, Undead (Jacob), Archers (Rachael). This
lasted a long time. As a team, we took out the Magicians and were
getting set to face off against the North Pole alliance of the CKG.
(Centaurs, Knights, Gnomes). This was going to be a long hard road, since
the Barbarians died out quickly, leaving CKG quite strong. Then Rachael
got busy in RL and started missing turns, and dropped out, leaving us w a
broken team. This is when the Faeries - originally marked for death,
became much more valueable. I got pretty close to Mark, and together w
the Trolls, we faced off against the CKG, and eventually got some key
breakthrus and won out, defeating the Centaurs, leaving the Knights and Gnomes
stranded up in the corner, for the slow death. (many thanks to Nick for
stepping in and putting up such a killer fight) Thru all this, Mark and I
built up significant trust, since we had to operate in close quarters for a lot
of turns, always in prime position to stab the other. We never did, we
stuck to our plan, and in time, eventually took out the Northern Triple.
In
the middle of the board, it was pretty chaotic (and lots of fun). Jacob our
original Undead player was nearly eliminated from the get-go, but Warren and I
managed to save him with a killer stab of the Magicians. This was
risky. I was essentially helping a bear to eat a tiger, for helping the
Trolls to take out the Magicians would jeopardize my own ability to exist on my
home continent, but since I held on to the choke points at Dargaard keep and
the upper peninsula, I took the risk. This basically carried the 3 of us
(RFT) into the mid-game.
Along
the way, the Nomads went down after only a couple turns into the game, and they
were put on "random order mode" by our original GM Trout. I
disliked this ruling cuz it didn't give the Nomads a chance to be played and
test the variant... Anyways, it worked out ok, since the random orders
didn't end up randomly against me, tho they very well could have. This
was lucky on my part. We finished off the Nomads. This put me up
against the Dwarves / Matt. Tough game here, a lot of jockeying for
position, etc. I wanted to go past Matt and head south, but also wanted
to get into the Central Island. When the Ogres stabbed him, it made the
decision easy.
Then
Jacob left, right after we saved him. Never heard back from him, so I
wonder what happened. Enter Suzanne and Hoffman (replacing Babak)
and the game went downhill. What was previously a staunch ally, the new
Undead took the early stance that I should give them centers to equalize our
empires or we couldn't be allies. That didn't really work, particularly
after I just risked my entire game to save the Undead. All that
history lost in the change of leadership, the Undead set off on a long
campaign against me.
By
now, the Ogres were getting huge, having devoured most of the players on the
southern continent, methodically promising them salvation, then stabbing them
one at a time. After a while, it got to be puzzling why players were
agreeing to work w the Ogres, just to be eaten up one after another.
Leprechauns, Hobbits, Magicians, Samurai, etc. They fell like dominoes to
his magical "I won't stab YOU, really". This put him on a surge
to over 1/3 of the centers on the map, till we could finally rally everyone
against him. In a grand plan, the Elves, Wiz's, Dwarves, etc, were all
supposed to push back on the Ogres at once, but some players balked at it, and
the disjointed leftovers were quickly eaten up. No, of course the Elves
should not have been a pawn for survival, they should have tried to stand up
and become an empire again. It's too bad the small guys didn't stick
together, they could have done some major damage here. I always love when
small players give it their best in an effort to jumpstart their empire.
Even if it doesn't always work.
Then,
Warren stabbed me. This put an end to the stop-the-leader game, as I went
suddenly from 2nd place to nearly eliminated. This is the closest Hoffman
came to soloing, cuz I was completely giving ground on the OU front, after all
the work that went into the setup to capture the Rainbow Lake. I fell
back in a controlled fashion, pushing hard to get the Knights out so that Mark
and I could stand back to back. During this time, I had to trust Mark
clear into the Tilva Strait, where he could have pillaged what was left of my
empire, and he didn't. I really owed him for that, and so I wouldn't stab
him when the Ogres wanted me to, even tho I could have gutted him many times.
So
there I was about to be reduced to a small power surviving on 10 dots in the
north, and Suzanne came thru for me, and turned on the Trolls. This was
ultimately the move that I think cost Hoffman his win, cuz I wasn't down far
enough yet. I don't know quite why, but she had the ability to take the
Julianthes and force me some big disbands, and she passed it up. (Perhaps
the Undead hearts grew three sizes that day I think it was cuz
the Trolls were getting big too, and would have gotten most of my dots, while
the Undead, Faeries, and myself were starting to look small as what was left of
the resistance to the big 2. So Suzanne really saved my game, turning on
the Trolls. I think this annoyed Warren sufficiently that she flip
flopped, that he agreed to pull off the attack in its prime - right when he was
about to reach Telmar, my last holdout / build center.
Then, I
was saved.
<key
glorious music>
Hoffman
let Warren's pullback go one more turn to see if it was a trick, and when
realizing it was real and that Warren was not going to hand him a solo, Hoffman
then had no choice but to lay into him. So he did, w a failed stab due to
a random Pirate cut of the attack on Never Never Land. This made
it a dud, for he needed to get the critical naval build port and failed to
do so.
Then
we had a long game of slowly pushing the Ogres/Undead back, RFT vs OU, with
Pirates going back and forth. Very successful, we pushed them clear back
to the southern continent, at which point I think everyone just got
bored. I did the math, and nothing could have stopped us from taking out
the Pirates, getting into The Maw, Thunderhead, Terabithia, overrunning the
central island, and eventually then w those losses and removals, landing on the
southern continent. I think Hoffman saw this coming, and so he
decided it was better to take the 6-way than risk losing to an RFT, and so finally
even H voted for the draw. Mark wanted out a few turns ago, but as long
as Warren was anxious to play on then so was I, so when Warren eventually said
he could take it or leave it, so did I too.
Penner
and Suzanne, no doubt, were right to go for the DIAS, cuz that's the best they
could get. No surprise here that they were totally pro-Draw. Any
lesser draw would surely not include them. But RFTO could have done
better -- to get at worst, an RFTO. Don't see why this wasn't
enacted. A 4-way is quite good, a 6-way draw in Dip games is pretty blah.
Still out of 19 players, and nearly eliminated, I'm happy to be alive and part
of it.
For
those interested, I voted yes sometimes, no other times. It was
about 50/50. I voted yes the times I copied Mark.
Therefore somoene else was voted down some of the draws, or they would have
passed long ago. I figure it was Hoffman, as he said, he was trying
anything to get me and Mark to split up, and he was indeed trying this quite
regularly, asking me to stab the Faeries even after he'd complain about
the draw results.
As
for the test of the variant, it was quite fun to play on my own map. It
was a blast. Even better that I got to ride the wave of highs and lows,
and get a good feel for it. It did affirm one of the design goals, that
no power be able to be indestructible like they can in Standard - i.e. no
stalemate lines. Even tho the Ogres looked tough to invade, there are
only 32 centers between the southern continent and the underworld, which is not
enough to hold a perfect line. Thus I would like to have played it out a
bit further, to possibly an RFT or RFO 3-way, or even an RFTO 4-way.
Many
thanks to Trout for offering to run it so I could try it out myself, and to
Garry for picking up the second half! If anyone else wants to run such a challenging
game, I'll be the first to join.

game all,

DC290 Spring 1907 adjudication (dc290) neversawthatcoming Jul 08, 10:17 pm |
Well that wasn't very nice...it was a good run...but it finally came crashing down...
I am going to go ahead and remove any units that could possibly defend my 3 remaining home centers. Based on this, it appears to me that Michael will be at 18 by fall of '08.
I propose that we vote Turkey a solo.
I will continue to send in orders...but it based on what will be my ordered disbands, it would appear that Turkey's win is inevitable.
My congratulations to Mike and I would ask that Joey put the T-solo up for a vote.
Thank you,
Joe

DC 332 New Austria Needed - cfisher6 (Jun 29, 2010, 9:22 pm) |
In DC332, a standard game in its opening year, we need a new Austria. Fall 1901 has yet to be adjudicated so the position is full of opportunity. If anyone has the opening for a new game please join up on the main page and send me an email at fisher-dot-chrisw-at-gmail-dot-com.
Thanks for anyone who has the time![Reply] |
DC 313 Turkey EOG - fencertim (Jun 29, 2010, 9:12 pm) |
Well, where to start? Thank you everyone for the game I very
much enjoyed the time. This is the first tournament style game for me and it
played quite differently than my typical approach to the game. Still, it had
all the drama and anxiety that comes with the more tense moments we encounter.
It has been a long time since I have drawn Turkey so I really
was not sure where to start. I poked through the leader boards and saw this
game, if I remember correctly had 5 players sitting in the top 10 of the
standings for the second round. I poked around the profiles and saw it was also
packed with quality players. I found I was in over my head. I decided the best
approach for me was to cause chaos. I think I accomplished that. Going into
1901 I had agreements with Austria, Russia and Italy to be non aggressive toward
one another. I was hell bent on forming the Juggernaut and John seemed
agreeable until he moved into the Black Sea and tried to explain that it was a
mistake. I didn’t buy it for one second so as a side note John, you set
the tone for everything right there. (I don’t hate you either.)
I don’t know what really happened with Italy and
Austria but I attempted to pit them against one another because both of them had
excellent chances to win the tournament. I approached everyone in the game and
addressed my concern that they would team up to protect their stake in the overall
event so should we see cooperation between them it would be best for the rest
of us to take care of that situation early.
I have to admit that the abandonment of France had a great
impact on my strategy, this gave Italy a natural path to gain resources. I told
Italy that I would pressure Austria so he could move on the French centers. At
that point, I just tried to cause chaos with Russia and Austria, sniping
centers when I could then jumping ship when the opportunity presented itself. I
thought that would keep them from attacking me and it worked out pretty well. I
aligned with Italy because I needed to make sure that the units he built from
the French centers would move West.
Once Italy and I were making good gains we discussed making
this a two way draw, this should have given him the tournament win and me a
good standing at the end and right then I thought that would be enough for me.
I think this made him comfortable and allowed me to slide units slowly to the
west. When Russia was well into Germany and I had a solid line all around I
felt comfortable moving onto taking him on as a target. Once he was whittled
down I started to see that I might actually have a chance to take the game in a
solo.
Russia started discussions about an Italian solo and England
was kinda in agreement if we were not careful but I can assure you that Italy
was never gonna get a solo. If he even flinched to make a move that might lead
to that possibility I was in a position end that immediately. However, with the
alarm raised I used the opportunity to have England and Russia give Italy some
pressure in the north and I could easily come to ‘assist’ and ‘help’
Italy with the war. All this allowed me to slide more units to the West.
Now, the incursion into the Ionian Sea and the illusion of
the stab. It was weak and Joao figured out that it was a bad show, but I needed
to test the waters with Italy, I made the move and he let me off the hook so I withdrew.
I moved in again and again Italy let me off the hook and I withdrew. At that
point I was VERY confident that I would win the game. I only needed to find the
right time to make the real stab.
So, where did it all go wrong? When I made the final stab I second
guessed myself and ordered a double support for Tyrolia to Munich when a single
support was enough…that support from Silesia was originally ordered to go
to Prussia – Berlin. Had I not changed that order, Venice and Tunis were not
defendable and I would have made 18. Jeff, the letter you sent right after the
stab made me change that order, I finally felt that you would not let me get
away with my bad behavior and I thought getting Munich was too important. I
really feel that this was the only mistake I made in the game. I knew after
this it would be everyone against me and I think I had maybe one more shot at a
solo, perhaps taking Tunis in the next turn and bouncing units from N Africa
might have bought me some more time but I was already disgusted that I blew
such an opportunity.
It was a strange game, two abandons really changed the game.
Some deadline issues and such really put the game in a funk but looking back at
everything that happened and how well we all battled this is a fine ending. I
would gladly share a board with each of you again.
To Sam; thank you for the work you put into the game, we had
a misunderstanding early on but I hope you just see it as that.
France/Germany…thanks for the couple of moves you got
in there. I did enjoy practicing some French with Laurence.
England, we didn’t have a lot of interaction until the
end but your observations and insights were very good and I learned a lot from
you and your approach to the game. I really look forward to seeing you in a
game again.
Austria, I know I promised to not take you out of the game
but I had to go for the solo so I hope you understand. I would hope that you’d
have done the same were the roles reversed.
Russia, I really thought you hated me. A lot of my moves
were he complete opposite of what we discussed. Again, I wanted to keep you
uneasy and kinda frozen in position. I really would have done the Juggernaut
but opening to Black Sea took that off the table. I felt you were too experienced
to make that ‘mistake.’
Italy; we had a great run there for a while. I would have
surely gone to the end had I not been convinced that I would not win outright.
You just gave me too much room to move and like I said, you never ‘punished’
me for taking advantage of you. We certainly proved that I/T is a viable
alliance that can do very well.
Sorry this is so long, hopefully it was not boring I am sure
I missed something important but a lot did happen and I don’t remember it
all. Again, thank you all for the game and good luck to you in future games.
Tim

DC 332 Deadline extension - cfisher6 (Jun 29, 2010, 8:56 pm) |
All,
As I mentioned in one of our earlier communications, I don't like the idea of processing NMRs in the first year--it can destabilize the game too much. I still haven't heard from our Austrian player so I will have to list him as Abandoned and find a substitute before adjudicating the Fall 1901 turn.
Sorry for the delay, if you know of any available players please urge them to join DC and sign up for the game--this early on it's by no means a bad position to be in!

Let me open by thanking the players of this game for providing so much excellent press. I've never played in a game with this much players press and think it really adds to things. Do keep it up!
I am afraid to share we've had our first misorder in this game. The British order F Sue - Egy(sc) is invalid because there is no British F Sue. If I discover a misorder in the prelims I will always go back to the person who placed the order for clarification; in this case the order came after the prelim deadline and thus was adjudicated as F Egy(sc) H. I am going to be extremely strict about this so do take note of this case and consider it for yourself in the future.
***The calamities of Europe aside, it is an exciting time here and in other parts of the world:
On January 3 the first science fiction convention was held in Leeds, England. While even the attendees were not entirely sanguine about what "science fiction" is there were certainly some parliamentary hard-liners wondering aloud why such frivolity is being supported during this critical moment of war.
On January 19 across the pond an eccentric young inventor named Howard Hughes set a record by flying from Los Angeles to New York City in 7 hours and 28 minutes. While air power has not played a significant role in the war to date the continued evolution of airborne technology could prove to be a difference-maker in sorting out the present hostilities.
The Soviet Union seems perpetually plunged into internal intrigue and turmoil, the latest series of flare-ups surrounding the spread of Trotskyism and reported plots to assassinate the great Stalin. Trials are held; suspects are executed.
In a victory for workers everywhere the United Automobile Workers Union is officially recognized in the United States on February 11.
In an exhibition of Anglo-Japanese cooperation the "Kamikaze" arrives at Croydon Airport in London on April 9. It is the first Japanese-built aircraft to fly to Europe.
On April 20 a cinefilm fire in an elementary school in Kilingi-Nomme, Estonia kills 17 students and injures 50. The event is blamed on the build-up of Polish and Soviet military in the region.
Guernica, Spain is bombed on April 26. While German bomb casings are produced as evidence of German involvement there is nothing in our current battle connecting the Luftwaffe to the intrigues of the Revolution-torn country.
As a stark counter-point to other recent air achievements the world is horrified as the German airship Hindenburg bursts into flames in Lakehurst, New Jersey. Secret bombing projects related to futuristic airships are immediately mothballed by a handful of governments.
On May 28th Neville Chamberlin becomes Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Touts are already bragging that Chamberlin is a diplomatic lion who will beguile and overwhelm all foreign statesmen he has cause to deal with, certain to fool them or bring them to their knees in the years ahead.
On July 7 the second Sino-Japanese War officially begins with the Battle of Lugou Bridge and effective Japanese invasion of China. Observers are ominously suggesting that, along with the current activity here in Europe, the Great War be re-named World War I and our current intrigues be dubbed World War II.
There are no retreats (all neutral units are disbanded; in this case just A Hun) so we roll right on to the fall! Upcoming deadlines are at the end of this note.

Press from Turkey:
The Great Mustafa Kemal Atatürk would like to thank the states of Europe for allowing Turkey to have a seat at this table of European affairs. We have a proud and storied history in the southeastern quadrant of this map and are grateful that it is being respected. We hope to continue positive relations with all of you and look forward to ways in which we can secularly modernize our state. Perhaps one day we could reach some form of European union with many of you in order to further integrate our common values. No doubt this could be achieved soon.
We would also like to congratulate the Dutch and German footballers for their athletic successes.

Press from USSR:
Tabriz - Iranian/Armenian Border Ranges
Local Nomads traveling the mountain ranges at the northern Iranian border report massive troop gatherings of Soviet armies building up forward defensive installations. So far, no official statement by the Kreml has been released, but rumors go, that the Kurdish minority in the area has called the USSR to protect the interests of their solcialist kurdish brethren, preventing aggressive moves of the Turkish nation into the east. Though the USSR has no intentions to openly offend Turkey, the movement of troops across the border as a preemptive act to block any troop buil-up might cause a diplomatic crisis between the nations. The lack of stability with the recent Libanese uprisings against French occupation does its own to destabilize the region further - the hopefully we will not see the region erupt in full war soon...

DC 306: Sengoku Rev6DP - Fall 1574: Date Masamune - Kenshi777 (Jun 29, 2010, 4:20 pm) |
Date Masamune was one of many daimyo that ruled a portion of the vast Mutsu province. They are most well known for their longevity, and indeed they achieved their greatest accomplishments merely by surviving the Sengoku Jidai era, and assuming control of the wealthy Sendai domain after the Tokugawa had consolidated control of Japan. The Date were provincial lords for nearly 700 years, one of the longest tenures of any clan in Japan's feudal era.
***TEAHOUSE COMMENTARY: Uesugi withdraws from his invasion of Asakura's domain, but does not find the support he needs to evict the Oda from their holdings in Mino. The Chosokabe and Mori armada continues to advance along both coasts of Honshu. Satomi Yoshihiro sends his neighbour Date Masamune his congratulations on being this months featured daimyo. Masamune is inconsolable anyway, as he was forcibly made into an Uesugi vassal long ago in this game.

DC 306: Sengoku Rev6DP - Fall 1574: Date Masamune (dc306) Kenshi777 Jul 08, 03:36 pm |
Ryuzoji Takanobu of Hizen province was a rising daimyo that ultimately bit off more than he could chew. His attempts to suppress the rebellious clans of the Shimabara peninsula in Hizen resulted in an appeal by the Arima clan to by the powerful Shimazu clain of Satsuma. The Shimazu would ultimately claim both the Ryuzoji lands and the life of Takanobu himself. Before this untimely demise however, Takanobu was one of the three great daimyo of Kyushu, alongside the Otomo of Bungo province, and the Shimazu of Satsuma.
***TEAHOUSE COMMENTARY: In our Sengoku-jidai, the Ryuzoji name is a distant memory, a minor nuisance crushed under the heel of the Mori clan, who have since turned their attentions to the north. Their assistance to the Asakura is not enough to prevent the destruction of Kaga by Uesugi forces however. In the south, the Chosokabe succeed in advancing to the critical Totomi Sea, and shifting the naval fight in their favor. Hojo and Oda remain locked in a bitter struggle for the heart of Honshu. Meanwhile, Satomi Yoshihiro of Hitachi enjoys peacefully watching the cherry blossoms fall, and notes the absence of emissaries in his court.

DC224: Pirates EOG - Viper (Jun 29, 2010, 1:20 pm) |
Hey all... I'll step up to the plate with an EOG as well.
This was by far the most frustrating game I've had in the days I've been playing Dip. Every time I thought I had an alliance of some sort they dissolved into nothing (or I broke them). Right off the hop I had suspicions of the Trolls/Rogues/Magicians, so I set up an equal force of Pirates/Hobbits/Samurai. When the T/R attacked Magicians, I thought "great, now the three of us can roll in there." Alas, Hobbits and Samurai came to blows over the Enchanted Isles and I had to pick a side, so away with the Hobbits as I worked with the Wizards now.
All that time, the old Ogres and I had an overall plan that included working with Trolls for a while to take out the Undead, because he was really annoying at the first, then continue on to the north, but then Ogres and Undead
both changed hands and that plan evaporated.
Meanwhile, I was trying very hard to be on the good side of Suzanne with the Archers, but apparently none of my emails went through. I was still convinced that P/A was the way to go, though, so I broke my alliance with the Wizards and betrayed him to the new Ogres. Eventually, however, I had nowhere to go, so I attacked the Archers after all. When they changed hands, it was too late and I was too far committed to that.
Then, Ogres started pushing me out of the south and Trolls started coming across the High Seas. They tried to tell me they weren't working together, but I never bought that story. So I gave up a few centres to them while still taking some from the Archers, which allowed me to shore up my defenses and hope to survive long enough for a survival in what I assumed would be a two-way draw.
Eventually Ogres became greedy (his words) and attacked
Trolls, at which point I was all for attacking the Trolls, but then this whole "end the game" thing started and everyone now wanted me to work with them... Ogres against the Faeries and R/F against Ogres. I went with the Ogres because I had no chance of making significant progress into those southern lines. But when I attacked Faeries and had my best chance of making headway there, Ogres lost Razors Edge and I called off the hounds, choosing to wait out the game from where I was.
So, that was the game from my perspective... I look forward to playing with (or against) you soon.
For the last time,
Cap'n Penner the Pirate
