(DC 324) Spring 1903 Results ** CORRECTED ** - Corrino (May 14, 2010, 8:32 pm) |
Players,
THIS JUST IN: Russian stealth armies seize Munich! White Russians in the Black Forest! Mein Gott!
Sorry for the earlier erroneous report. I failed to pick up a set of revised orders which certainly had a significant impact on the results. Fortunately, most of the difference is in new units revealed. Only one unit was revealed originally that should not have been. Perhaps you will all do me the courtesy of simply deleting the original message and map and forgetting what you saw?
Thanks.
Your abashed GM,
Chris
RETREAT NEEDED: German A Munich. Please submit ASAP, within 24 hours at the most.
NEXT DEADLINE: Fall 1903 is due Tuesday, May 18, at 8 pm Eastern US time. I

not to mention, DC awards you points for surviving, and you come out
much better than being eliminated. This is a wonderful feature of the
community, and promotes more realistic play that emulates what real
heads of state would be expected to do. (the rational ones at least -
if you find yourself in control of the DPRK in some variant, feel free
to isolate yourself diplomatically and invite ruin on your country
daily)

Hello everyone,
As some of you may know, I'm a very vivid Diplomacy gamer; in fact, you
could probably consider me an addict. I've gone for some time until fairly
recently without playing Diplomacy not even so much as 1 on 1 with my uncle
who taught me the game 12 or so years ago.
I would like to voice that abandonments are both avoidable, and there's
lessons to be learned by losing. Such as you learn traps to watch out for,
you also learn ways to either counter them or turn a trap against you
against the player (a feat I admittedly haven't quite gotten the handle on),
or you learn ways to either find ways to be useful or strike the game's
dynamics or more the game's present political state.
Winning is fun, but I believe abandonments ignore that losing can and is fun
too.
Technically, you're never out until you're our. Granted, when you're losing
or in an undesirable position, there are great difficulties; however, it
takes time, dedication, and determination to make the best of your situation
and better it.
1). Losing can also teach you to adapt your playing style by either adopting
styles and strategy/tactics you've seen, or you can create an alternative
playing style.
2). Playing out losing positions often does hold a fruitful benefit of
learning the map better, and this provides you the useful information on how
to use your position to attempt impacting the present trend of the game.
Sometimes, this is all that is needed to get back into the game, or you can
find ways to make yourself useful.
Ideally, it may be easier to approach the game with these in mind:
1). Play to attain a winning seat not just a solo. A win is still a win even
if it isn't the preferable goal of a solo.
2). Play to survive, many players are more likely to eliminate/conquer a
player who doesn't offer or emphasize its usefulness.
3). If you can't survive looks to support a player, often referred to as
kingmaker, sometimes this will help you survive, but sometimes it does help
you get back into the game.
I hope that this helps out newer players to the hobby, and thank you for
taking the time to read this post.

Sean,
Thanks for a very encouraging editorial on why there's a benefit to playing out poor positions. I could add that there is also the issue of respect for the investment of time and effort by the other players. But in considering your perspective - the playing out of a losing position as an educational experience - I thought of the EOG statement I just wrote for DC261. My hand grew steadily worse the entire game... and it was a long, long game. Much to my surprise, I had about as many "fun" moments playing it out as I do in a winning effort.

Gentlemen,Do we see a case of early-leader syndrome, as Germany gets struck by a multi-power attack? Also, the news from the east is not good as the leaders for both Turkey and Russia forget to order their units around. The consequence: Italian and Austrian units are knocking on the door...
We are in need of a single retreat, but with only one option available I've auto-retreated the unit into the Black Sea. Jeffrey, if you'd rather retreat the unit OTB, let me know before Monday, 18:00 GMT.

Sadly the Elven EGP is Voted Down
But It Apparently is Not Personal...ALL EGP's Fail
In Other News, the Pirates Seem to Have Had a Change of Heart About Faeries, But NOT
Vice Versa
Great Naval Battles Occur in the Southern Seas as Ogres and Trolls Change Places
The Undead Soon To Become Dead?
What an Entertaining War!
All,
Several notes:
1. All EGP's failed and I saw no new proposals; a side note - I did NOT actually look at the results previously because I did not want to state whether the game ended or not without the actual results
2. Sorry for the delay
3. I forgot to copy over the orders in my email to myself. Those will come in a separate email later tonight (sorry Suzanne). Therefore all that is attached is the RW file and the .gif files.
4. I AM DISAPPOINTED. AT LEAST ONE OF YOU COULD HAVE VOTED FOR THE ELVEN EGP; YOU HAD TO KNOW IT WOULD FAIL ANYWAY. That is QUITE disappointing and duly-noted in the annals of DC history (and my mind).
We do have one retreat: The Pirate A in Drynwyn can retreat to Andarien Plain, Kingdom of Hearts, Prydain, Westmark or OTB. This retreat is due Monday the 17th at 6pm CST.
Fall 19 will be due the following Tuesday, May 25th at 6pm CST.
Happy hunting and a detailed order accounting to follow later.

Guys,
thanks for the game. It was a nice chance to step in for Germany and try save it from its annihilation.Things initially looked promising but then events took a downturn. Can't say too much now without disclosing information prematurely but special thanks for Sean and Simon for making this a great game. And Matt for without him it would have been far less interesting.
And Michael, thanks for GMing.
Good luck for those who remain. I'll be watching this game to see who come out victorious.

Belatedly, I'll still weigh in to thank Frank and Matt for the game. The gracious Pasha has already dispatched the gifts, so you should be receiving your mail-order brides shortly. I guess we'll just have to make do with the French papers from now on.
Cheers chaps, see you in the next game!

Subject: DC302 Fall 1906 adjudication
Fall 1906 sees Germany and England exit the game, with England's fate determined in Spring this year, and Germany seeing France and Russia combine to take over his two remaining centres. Italy NMRs but not two consecutive ones, so doesn't fall into civil disorder.
I've taken the liberty of processing Autumn 1906. This involved disbanding the two German forces - both technically had a retreat, but with no centres, would have been disbanded in winter anyway. For Italy, I've taken the liberty of retreating Naples to it's only valid retreat - Rome, and Western Mediterranean to Tyrennhian Sea. Western Med can retreat to North Africa if needed, so if Italy wants to make that retreat, can they inform me with their winter adjustments.
Winter adjustments due tomorrow Friday 14th May, 2100GMT.
A French solo vote also fails.
Adjustments:
Austria: Supp 1 Unit 1 Build 0

DC302 Fall 1906 adjudication - porkbelly (May 14, 2010, 2:03 pm) |
Belatedly, I'll still weigh in to thank Frank and Matt for the game. The gracious Pasha has already dispatched the gifts, so you should be receiving your mail-order brides shortly. I guess we'll just have to make do with the French papers from now on.
Cheers chaps, see you in the next game!

I'd like to say farewell to Matt and Frank and thanks for their contributions to the game. You've both been very worthy foes and excellent former allies to me in this game. It's been a lot of fun and I look forward to taking you on again in future battles of wits.

Blitzers,
The Fall moves continue the general march towards the East, with Germany and Italy making progress. France's last centers are taken, and the war takes another victim. Thank you for sticking it out until the bitter end Bret. You do not need to submit any orders this turn, since they will not affect any other outcomes.
We are in need of many retreats this season. Remember that all builds/disbands can be made conditional on the retreats.
Russian A Galicia can retreat to Ukraine or OTB.
Russian A St Petersburg can retreat to Livonia or OTB.
Russian A Warsaw can retreat to Livonia, Ukraine or OTB.
French F Spain(nc) can retreat to Mid-Atlantic Ocean or OTB.
We also have a draw proposal on the table. Voting will remain open until the Spring turn (next Monday), but voting can start this turn. France is not eligible for voting - only the four remaining powers.
Standings and adjustments due:
France: Eliminated
Germany: 15 - Build 3
Italy: 12 - Build 3
Russia: 2 - Remove up to 3 units (depending on retreats)
Turkey: 5 - Build 0
Next turn: Autumn 1907 Retreats, Winter 1907 Adjustments & Draw proposal

DC261 - Italian EOG - Kenshi777 (May 14, 2010, 12:04 pm) |
This may not be as detailed as I would like since I'm on the road in
Minneapolis right now (no access to the RP history of this game) but I
think I can talk most of it from memory.
First of all, thanks to Josh and all the players for a very enjoyable
game, and especially to Jorge for stepping in after Bruce's departure
so the game could continue uninterrupted.
Coming in to this game, I had something to prove - an undesirable
reputation for being stab-happy as a result of DC 229. Accordingly, I
played this game with much more firm alliances than I typically do,
and decided very early in the game to forgo a solo run in favor of a 2
or 3 way draw. I had very little history with any of the players
aside from Jim in Austria (who I had played with before), and Mark in
England, who was a player in one of my Dark Ages games here in DC.
I was fortunate to find willing allies in Austria and France. Wasn't
sure if Jim would welcome me as an ally or not coming into this game -
we had quite the scuffle in our most recent previous game. Looking
east, Turkey left a critical vulnerability open early that allowed for
an invasion. Following Austria's lead, we followed through on that
attack to remove Russia from the south as well. Eliminating David was
not one of my goals, but unfortunately he suffered the curse of the
Russian, and faced attacks in the north and south simultaneously. The
alliance with Austria solidified into a two-way draw pact at this
time, and from this point forward we were playing towards that end.
All the same, Jim and I were both quite cautious not to leave
sufficient stab opportunities open to one another that would enable
either of us to reach 18 at the other's expense.
Shifting attentions west, I seriously entertained bypassing France
entirely - my alliance with him was not all smoke and mirrors. And I
must admit there is a strong argument to be made that I *should* have
remained loyal to him, at least longer than I did - that the campaign
against England and Germany would have been concluded much more easily
had I done so. Regardless, I saw an opportunity, and under pressure
to maintain the pace of Austrian gains, I took advantage. Ben L. was
a good ally and very easy to work with - I took no pleasure out of
stabbing him, and hope to have another opportunity to play with him
again in the future.
As the game transitioned into the endgame phase, it kind of got
sloppy. I botched my orders on one occasion, setting A/I plans back a
full three seasons. I would not have faulted Jim for stabbing me in
response to that, and I suspect the thought did cross his mind. Still
- when Jim Rossiter gives his word, you can take it to the bank, and
fortunately for me, the setback was 100% reversible. So we quickly
recovered the lost momentum and position.
The endgame became a slow war of attrition, one that would, barring an
A/I stab, eventually result in guaranteed success. Gascony could be
forced, and then the German Army in Ruhr would be overloaded in its
task to defend both Kiel and Burgundy. Even if I was dislodged from
Gascony, it could be recaptured, and the guessing game could be
repeated indefinitely. So it was only a matter of time until either
Burgundy or Kiel was dislodged, which would have resulted in the
collapse of the EFG line. What happened from there was anybody's
guess, but I believe both Jim and I would have stuck to the agreed
pact and pushed all the way to 17-17.
That said, I commend EFG for their seamless coordination - whoever was
calling the shots in that group did so very effectively, and organized
a strong defense. Your survival points were well earned, and I look
forward to seeing you all again soon in DC.
Thanks!
B.

DC287 - Winter 2003 - Viper (May 14, 2010, 10:16 am) |
Hey, so never believe me if I say I'll adjudicate after playing ultimate. That won't ever happen. By the time I'm back, re-hydrated and stretched, I'm no good for anything else. Anyway, by the time I got down here this morning, I had all the necessary adjustments, so that's good. I hate NMRing. Here they are:
Quebec:
Build F Quebec
Mexico:
Disband A Panama
Amazon:
Disband F Chile
Disband F Skeleton Coast
Europe:
Disband F Norwegian Sea
Disband F Atlantic Ocean
Russia:
Build A Moscow
Sahara:
Disband F Ionian Sea
Congo:
Build A Kinshasa
Build A Addis Ababa
Persia:
Build A Karachi
Build F Mumbai
Oceania:
Build F Sydney
Build F Jakarta
Next Deadline:
Spring 2004 is due on Wednesday, May 19, 1pm CDT.[Reply] |
FLWC summer 05 - FuzzyLogic (May 14, 2010, 9:30 am) |
The Elves take their army in Two Towers off the board, Faeries move their fleet Ella up to Oz, and the Gnome fleet Newa gets pushed up river to Khemri.
That's it!
Fall 05 due Thurs! 5/20, 3pm Central.
Enjoy,
-mike
