1648 v3.3 - charlesf (Mar 27, 2010, 8:37 am) |
Hi guys,
just a brief variant design heads-up: I've now finished implementing a couple of further changes to the variant. Eastern Europe has undergone considerable change since my reworking of other parts of the map (v3.2).
The Smolensk buffer space (basically the territory Poland ceded later in the 17th century to Russia) now shields Moscow from a first-year attack by the Poles. Yet as Moscow rather than Novgorod now stretches to the White Sea (ie. part of what's designated as the Norwegian Sea in the game), Moscow may be nonetheless targeted in 1649 (albeit only by a Danish descent on the Muscovite port of Archangel, so to speak).
A new province is located between Karelia and Moscow, Onega. This refashioning of the map allows for a new axis of attack in a Russo-Swedish war.
The sum of these changes in Eastern Europe very much alter Russia's opening play. Also, the dynamics in the North-Eastern triangle are somewhat changed by the extra Smolensk buffer edging Poland and Russia somewhat further apart.
Since I now realise that the unicoastal character of Abo was not in keeping with the intuitive reading of the map by most folks, I've decided to turn it into a bicoastal province. I had contemplated both approaches prior to the game and opted for the unicoastal option without it being a strong preference of mine, so better now to go with what I now understand is the more natural solution.
I hadn't added coastal labels to the past normal-sized maps since I thought that say the space round Holstein was simply too congested to fit them in. Fortunately a little rearranging of labels and the use of the smallest still legible font allowed this after all. So that ought to give players a "one stop" map reference.
All-in-all, I think both the lowered victory conditions and numerous map changes present a huge difference compared to v3.0, i.e. the one being used for the present playtest.
That being said, I'm tempted to yet:
a) Add a Magdeburg buffer space between Brandenburg, Saxony, Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg, while still having Lower Saxony and Brandenburg remain adjacent (arrows indicating this). I think gameplaywise this would be beneficial, but it might be cutting it close in terms of available space.
b) Also have Hesse and Franconia touch another, while Saxony and Swabia would remain adjacent. Another red-arrow-crossing. Arguably easier to fit in than the aforementioned Madgeburg idea, but I kinda fear it might look odd. I guess I'll just have to try that out one day and see whether such a change works for me aesthetically.
Other than perhaps those, I don't think I have any other possible changes on my radar. Though I guess one never knows what ideas might hit you next.
Cheers,
Charles[Reply] |

this ends if any players deserve some sort of a result out of this
then it's definitely you three. Although elimination is harsh in 1911,
it is probably deserved and certainly no great shock. Thanks all.

DC224 Spring 17: Give and Take - sandiegosmith (Mar 26, 2010, 7:51 pm) |
You'd rather flog a dead horse of a game than accept that all of us remaining save the Dwarves have fought and earned our place in the draw?
Where are your great gains going to come from should the rest of us stop fighting? The only one with many SCs vulnerable to you is the Undead. And they are not sufficient in quantity for you to win.

You know the common theme to every one of those proposals? “O”. The Ogres are the only power who have never been on the defensive, nor had a moment of “I may actually not be in the draw”. The Ogres have had nothing but constant steady growth from an unattackable position. Yet you play kingmaker like you’re the one who gets to decide who shares the draw. When in reality it doesn’t matter who accepts your offer, you just need to keep someone attacking someone so you can continue your growth into whatever hole opens up as a result.

Fine, you want all the draw proposals out here?
Rogues: R/O/P, R/O/T, R/O/U you said no to them all.
Undead: O/U, or O/U/*
Trolls: O/T, O/U/T, O/U/T/P
Pirates: O/P, O/U/P, and once O/R/P.
But everyone was also told that O/U were connected at the hip, at least until R/F split up. I even offered to pull my fleets back away from F so that you could stab and I couldn't possibly gain from it. But you said NO and claimed it would destabilize the center. I don't see how if I wasn't in position to stab, but you've got a better sight on this game than I do. After all, you've been screaming about an Ogre Solo since I took out the Wizards.
So public show of hands now: Do you all want a draw????

Anyway, I'm willing to draw, but not right now. And I voted NO to the Ogre Solo, just to prove my point that a draw is my intention, but I want it down to a 4-way at best. Same as I've said all along.

All,
We do have some retreats:
Undead F Timberlands can retreat to Istar or SAVAGE SEA.
Rogue F ZEBOIMS DEEP can retreat to Pwyll.
Troll F BABEL BEACH can retreat to SEA OF FALLEN STARS or Golgafrincham.
Obviously any of these can also go OTB. Error! Filename not specified.
Let's get retreats in by Saturday at 6pm CST (although I may not get to the adjudication until Sunday...I am moving this weekend to a new house).
From there, we will set Fall 17 as Friday April 2nd at 6pm CST.
Our vote will occur with Fall orders although I am certain that it is likely to fail given what I know of the players here.
Please double-check these - the Ogres in particular as there was an order for a non-existant A in Hoarluk and missing orders for two other A's.
Please yell with concerns (and, NO, "parlay" is not an acceptable yell!).

dc296 Round 1 Board 6 - Winter 1911 Results - MDemagogue (Mar 26, 2010, 7:34 pm) |
A big thank you to the GM, and to the players. I have never understood, and never will understand, the tendency to play to the draw when in an obvious lead. Go big or go home is my philosophy, though it's not one that seems to be subscribed to.
My plan for winning was fairly obvious. Western triple to combat the RAI that fell apart when Italy NMR'd a few times, then throw Germany under the bus. The next part, of course was to wage war on France and sweep to victory.
Mistakes were made on my end, what with stabbing too soon and all that. I regret that, and I regret letting France get too strong without weakening Germany and Russia enough but I regret nothing else.

Hi guys,
thx for the game, thx for our GM. Probably the most difficult place in the game. Thx you so much Fred.
It was a really pleasure to meet all of you. I use to play game with more time for negociate. I prefer it. It was very very hard to play every day.
About the game, I had really think I'll disappear soon, and probably without the stab from Mark to Frank, I would have a disappear. Thx you Dan for the start of the game. It was a great game for our alliance. Sorry to do not have play for the 2-way draw.... but I had try the solo. I think it's the main goal !
Frank, it was a great pleasure to meet you. I also stop the game, because I think you have to survive it. Really. And what about my style ???? lol
Charlie, We never talk to much, but you had made a great game. I was really afraid about your solo after my first dtabb on Dan. pfffff !
I would appreciate also to meet you somewhere. Do you know the Diplomacy National World Cup ? The first edition was finished last year. 25 teams from 17 differents countries (From USA to China, with South Africa, Brasil, Argentina, Australia, France, etc..... ), 2 rounds. It was a great tournament with a lot of pleasure. The tournament took place on stabbeurfou.org. and France win the World cup, Italy was second, Argentina 3rd. I had played both game in each round with France team. It was a great experience, and I hope much and much teams will play it !
Enjoy the game.

Hi guys,
thanks for playing. Fredrik, thanks for GMing this game so consistently; always timely with your adjudications.
Fab, Dan, Charlie: enjoyed the scheming.
Fab, really enjoyed your play even though it was annoying that I couldn't get any hold on you.
Dan, you played your diplomatic skills very well to end up with the current SC count; never thought you would be able to pull it off.
Charlie, thanks for your feedback for all those turns and for being such a loyal ally.
Mark, you were the first to stab me and you did it prematurely. Had you waited a bit longer you might have been more successful.
Maria, more luck in WB Rd2. Considering Fab's style of play you never had a chance.
And for me: I like to believe that things did go pretty well until I NMRd at the worst possible moment. Charlie, I have no doubt that had I not NMRd you would have ended up as the winner of this game. My apologies again.
Everyone: good luck in WB Rd2. Fab, since you're not playing Rd2: hope we meet again in another game.

DC224 Spring 17: Give and Take - FuzzyLogic (Mar 26, 2010, 6:23 pm) |

I ordered all the units I needed to order, and one additional unit I didn't have. You telling me that not ordering Mt Nimro cost me anything? Come on.

To be fair... he said I was the one who knows what he really wants... so that wouldn't leave the R/O/P out of the question.
Personally, I'm just happy to still be in this game. What was looking really grim when I thought I had a O/T coming at me has turn into discussions of whether or not to include me in the draw? Fascinating.
Anyway, here's to finding a solution we can all live with.
