dc316 game start! - coryfucius (Mar 22, 2010, 5:30 pm) |
Welcome to our round 2 game, everyone!
For those of you who don't already know me, my name is Cory Burris, and I have been a member of DC for nearly 4 years. Most of my Diplomacy activity recently has been limited to GM duties, as the task of locating billions of dollars for a cratering state budget has taken up a fair amount of my time in recent months. I have the (mis)fortune of working in the budget office of the Governor of Illinois, who took office a year ago after our previous Governor was impeached and removed from office! No, I am not related to our state's junior US Senator, who was appointed by that former Governor before he was sent packing. Incidentally, given our state's backlog of unpaid bills, does anyone know a good way to find $13 billion fast?
Since this is a tournament game, there is a common set of rules and season deadlines that all GMs are observing. This can be found at www.diplomaticcorp.com/winterblitz -- be sure to click the "Rules" option near the top of the main screen once you go to this page. Timing is the same as in round 1; my deadlines will all be at 3pm Central (US) / 21:00 GMT.
An important note: when submitting orders, make sure to include the game identifier "dc-316" in the subject line, and also cc: the tournament's Orders box (orders-at-diplomaticcorp.com (orders-at-diplomaticcorp.com)) -- this is for your protection in case your e-mail doesn't get through to me, or if I am not available and need a moderator to run a turn. One of my players in dc-291 sent an e-mail that didn't arrive in my inbox for a day, but fortunately did reach the Orders box, saving him from an NMR.
Press is allowed and encouraged. For those who are unfamiliar with press, that is simply generic messages that are made public as a part of the turn's results. Typically, press is just generic silliness that may or may not pertain to the game. There is actually some good press in the dc-274 game, so you can read the different turns on that game to see some examples.
Don't forget to check out the game's page on the DC web site at www.diplomaticcorp.com/?game_id=dc316 -- I will update it after each adjudication. I will also e-mail each adjudication to everyone, as well as a .dpy game file for use in the Realpolitik adjudication software.
And now your lineups!
Austria: Matthew Jones (matthew.jones.d-at-gmail.com (matthew.jones.d-at-gmail.com))

Turkey: Mikael Johansson (m_don_j-at-hotmail.com (m_don_j-at-hotmail.com))
The spring 1901 deadline will be Monday, March 29 at 3pm Central (US) / 21:00 GMT. Preliminary orders are strongly encouraged! Also, since Europe's clocks advance this weekend, we should all be back to our usual time difference. Mikael, please let me know if I'm still off an hour.
Thanks for playing, everyone, and happy stabbing!

Hey everyone... I look forward to the game. One thing to note... Austria and I are both from Winnipeg, MB, and we know each other somewhat. It doesn't mean anything from a tactical standpoint, but it's fair to let you know.

Right speaking of that, I'm playing in another game against Matt (France), just putting that out there. I do not crossgame or carry grudges between games, so it shouldn't be an issue but I'd rather present it here and now than having it used against me later (assumin I survive)

dc296 Round 1 Board 6 - Spring 1911 Results - z93blom (Mar 22, 2010, 4:38 pm) |
Blitzers,
We roll into summer, and will continue into the Fall, as the End Game Proposal is once again voted down, but surprise, surprise we have yet another End Game Proposal, and it is the same as before: Draw for Austria, France, and Russia, with survival for Germany. The votes are due with the Fall movement.
We also are in need of a single retreat:
Austrian A Constantinople can retreat to Ankara, Smyrna or OTB.
Next turn: Summer 1911 Retreats.
[b]Next Deadline: Tuesday, 23th of March 2010, 19:00 GMT (7PM).
Upcoming turn: Fall 1911 Movement & Votes.

Welcome to DC 313! - Samnuva (Mar 22, 2010, 4:38 pm) |
Hi everyone! My name is Sam Buck, and I'm going to be your GM for round two of Winter Blitz 2010. I realize you've all had the speeches about the rules and such in your first round games, so I'll speed through them:
1) CC your orders to orders-at-diplomaticcorp.com (orders-at-diplomaticcorp.com) . If I get hit by a falling anvil and have to go to the hospital, the DC mods (Gary and Mike) need to be able to run the turn, and if they don't have your orders, you'll wind up with an NMR. And nobody likes NMRs.
2) You all know the Scheduling. I will be doing Auto-retreats this game, so if your unit only has one place to retreat to, I will auto it to there. If you'd prefer to retreat OTB (Off The Board), notify me, and I will notify others.
Monday: Spring
Tuesday: Summer
Thursday: Fall
Friday: Autumn/Winter
3) Please put "DC313" into the Email subject line. I am currently Playing in DC284, DC285, DC294, and DC314, all while GMing DC313, DC292, and two as yet unnumbered games. Make my life happy, please.
4) If I have an error in My adjudication, then tell me within 24 hours. I had an incident this morning where I forgot about my Englishman's fall order in DC292. Nothing could be done about it, since he didn't notice it until after 24 hours had passed.
5)Conditional builds are allowed, since the autumn and winter turns will be treated as one. You should all know what that means, from last game. If you don't it just means that you can say:
If Turkish A Ukr retreats to Moscow, build A Sev, otherwise Build A Stp. (Just an Example).
6) There is no serious sixth rule. Oh wait, there is. HAVE FUN!!!
Now that that's over with, we have two more things to cover. The first is timing. The deadline for our games will ALWAYS be 3:00 PM US Eastern (19:00 GMT). I will remind you of this for the first couple of years, but after that, I don't think that it's too much to remember. If this ever changes, you will be informed. I will accept orders up to the point that I publish the Adjudication, but that will usually be VERY shortly after 3, so just get them in on time. Please?
And now, we have (drumroll) COUNTRY ASSIGNMENTS!!! Remember, these are random, so I'm sorry if you don't like what you got. Just try to have fun, you never know what might come of it.

dc318 - Winter Blitz 2010 Round 2 - Board 8 - z93blom (Mar 22, 2010, 4:29 pm) |
Blitzers,
You have all been assigned me as your GM for your second round of the Winter Blitz tournament at Diplomatic Corp. I wish to take this moment of time to remind you of the rules of the tournament. They are available here.
I will try to run my adjudication at 20:00 (8 PM), local time here in Sweden. At the moment that is 19:00 GMT, but that will change soon as we enter Daylight savings time. I think it will be 18:00 GMT at that point in time. Anyways, that's sometime in the afternoon across the US.
I also wish to remind you all to send your orders not only to me but to the order box (orders-at-diplomaticcorp.com (orders-at-diplomaticcorp.com)) as well, in case I'm unable to adjudicate. This is your responsibility! It is also your responsibility to get orders in on time. I try to confirm orders as soon as possible, and to validate them as often as I have time. I will not send out reminders though - not for the Winter Blitz - so get those orders in on time.
Here are the players and your countries.

DC302 Fall 1902 moves - psychosis1973 (Mar 22, 2010, 4:21 pm) |
Lots of activity across Europe in Fall 1902, with rather a lot of bounces!
In the east, Russia's attempts to take back Rumania would have been thwarted, were it not for Austria withdrawing to Budapest, meaning Rumania is vacant and remains Russian. Turkey takes Serbia off Austria, and manuvers fleets in a threatening manner. Italy shuffles forces, moving more armies onto the Austrian border.
In the west, the major development is France forcing his way into Belguim, evicting England in the process. Both German forces bounce English attacks, and for the second season running, Russia tries to support an attack on Munich, but finds the attacking army does something else.
The English army in Belguim only has one valid retreat (to Picardy), so I've made that retreat. Matt - if you want to disband the army, let me know asap, so I can let folk know.
Subject to the English retreat being changed, I need adjustments off five people - see list below. Can I have winter adjustments in by 2100GMT on Wednesday 24th March. If people want to get adjustments in early, I'll adjudicate winter once all have been received.

DC302 Fall 1902 moves (dc302) psychosis1973 Mar 23, 12:47 pm |
Chaps
Quick note to let you all know that England has chosen to disband his army in Belguim rather than retreat to Picardy. This gives England two builds to make. I won't be able to generate a revised map prior to the original adjustments deadline, so you'll just have to imagine the previous map without an English army in Picardy. Squint if you need to!
Deadline for all winter adjustments remains 2100 GMT tomorrow, Wednesday 24th March. Those submitting adjustments already can obviously change those adjustments in light of England's decision to disband.

DC224 Slaughter At StoryTime - Spring 17: As Promi... - garry.bledsoe (Mar 22, 2010, 3:17 pm) |
A lengthy pause we have had to rest our weary head.
Whilst friends and enemies traveled afar, away from their homestead.
Now again let the cries of war in the sky ring,
for once again we fight...because it is Spring!
Don't worry...you get the bad poetry free of charge. What do you expect from an exiled Elf?
Our deadline is Wednesday March 24th, 6pm CST.

Trolls Lose FOUR Under an Onslaught from the Ogres
Can Anyone Stop the Ogres? Were Elvish Scryers Right When They Foretold Ogren Dominance After
Being Abandoned by ALL Races When They Stabbed?
Okay...I know! I am probably carrying the "I told you so" too far but it IS a LOT of fun for me! What a game! I love the twists. You guys are putting on quite a battle.
To business - we have several retreats due:
Undead F To-Gai-Ru can retreat to ALL SAINTS BAY.
Troll F Enchanted Isles can retreat to BABEL BEACH.
Undead F ZEBOIMS DEEP can retreat to SAVAGE SEA or Pwyll (technically also ALL SAINTS BAY but
that is the ONLY option for F To-Gai-Ru so...)
Of course any of these can retreat OTB. Basically I will need one Undead retreat given that all of the others have one option.
The deadline for that is Sunday night at 8pm CST. I will be out of town for the weekend so I can't get it out sooner. From there we will have a quick deadline for Winter, Tuesday the 9th at 6pm CST. From there we will have an extended Spring 17 turn due to a player vacation (details on that with Winter).
PLEASE double-check. As you have no doubt noticed your GM is quite capable of mistakes!
NICK - thanks for filling in and fighting on until the end! On that note...a bit from our dearly departed Knight...
PRESS
Barring a miracle, goodbye from the Knights! This position was weak when I took it over, but I managed to stay alive by mending ties with the Archers as we fought off the Rogues/Faeries/Trolls. I tried to split up that trio, but only really got replies from Michael (the Rogues), and although there was willingness on both sides to find some solution, he was too committed already to an attack on me, and there was no real way for us to ally as long as he was unwilling to break his alliance with the Faeries.
To my surprise, the Trolls suddenly stabbed the Rogues, and a thin beam of light appeared at the end of the previously pitch-black tunnel. There was a critical moment when some Troll support in the top right part of the board could have shifted the balance to our side, as the Faeries and Rogues were relatively weak here and there was pressure from the underground on Dragons Teeth Mts. A breakthrough to Kingdom of Hearts could have allowed me and the Archers to hold on indefinitely. There wasn't much communication, and Warren decided instead to devote his units to the top-left part of the board in Anvard and Immoren, trying to destroy the Rogue position here. The Archers were knocked out, and then the top right part of the board from Cathal to Andarien Plain got rolled up by the Faeries/Rogues, and it was only a matter of time for the Knights.

DC300 - Fall 1904 Adjudication - bielf11 (Mar 22, 2010, 2:00 pm) |
Fall 1904: heavy losses for Turkey (F Greece disbanded and F Constantinople dislodged) and serious setback for France (A Belgium dislodged).
Russia apparently read the mind of the Pasha and with some help from Italy secured Greece and Constantinople.
Germany cut English Channel support for Belgium allowing the troops from Holland with help from Ruhr to force the French into retreat. And while the Germans are fighting the French the Russians sneak in the backdoor and take Vienna.
England meanwhile watches the French army from Wales and the Russians from Clyde fight over Liverpool without any winner. English diplomacy at work or sheer luck?
Two retreats required: Turkey and France.

I'm guessing the build of A Mos was the tipping point for the English-Russian alliance (non-agression pact?), as this turn sees Rob convoying an army to Lvn, while Nick moves his own army into stp. Likewise, Nick also makes a calculated risk by invading Con, which gets turkey into the black sea. This turn and the next will likely be key for Russia, with the possibilities of great gain and great loss mingled together.
In the west, the last German forces fall to the French. Dale, thanks for sticking with us until the end.
I'm looking forward to the next year or two. With Turkey crippled, four major powers remain, and it will be interesting to see where they attempt to expand.
Speaking of Turkey, I chose to auto-retreat you to the Black sea. If you would prefer off the board, let me know.
John

Gentlemen,
Welcome all. This is the official start of dc308. I'm sorry to have kept you guys waiting, but my vacation was booked a long time ago, and the game filled up surprisingly fast. Random.org has gone ahead and assigned you countries as follows:
IDCountry NameEmail Locationgreg England greg surnamegregsurname-at-gmail.com (gregsurname-at-gmail.com) Melbourne, VIC, AU jeffcole08Turkey Jeffrey Cole jeffcole854-at-gmail.com (jeffcole854-at-gmail.com) Clarksville, TN, USjerubbaal France Jason Waeberjerubbaal07-at-gmail.com (jerubbaal07-at-gmail.com) Milford, OH, US kuldesacGermany peter wens peter.wens-at-telenet.be (peter.wens-at-telenet.be) antwerp, BEneversawthatcoming Italy Joe Rizzokangaroohp-at-aol.com (kangaroohp-at-aol.com) Winfield, IL, US Paga25Austria jeremy waters ihatehairyspiders-at-hotmail.com (ihatehairyspiders-at-hotmail.com) Stratford-upon-avon, WARKS, UKvenceromorir Russia Sean Michaelsvenceromorir01-at-yahoo.com (venceromorir01-at-yahoo.com) Washington, DC, US
The game will run with adjudications due on weekdays, at 19:00 (7 PM) GMT times. This is the evening across Europe, sometime in the afternoon across the US, and the middle of the night in Australia. I'll try to give at least a few days of discussion for the major turns, with the minor turns taking a day or two, all depending on when we finish off the previous turn. In my experience a game year will take about a week and a half - so count on playing up until early summer. The first turn will be longer, in order for you all to be able to get acquainted to each other.
I also run a pretty tight ship with the adjudications - if you do not have orders in by the time I start the adjudications you will receive an NMR (No Move Received). Therefore it is important to send in preliminaries. Any order can be changed up until the deadline. Also: try to make all the orders complete. I do not want to go hunting for orders from a previous order-set.
You can always see the status of the game on Diplomatic Corps website - including the due date, etc.
Make my life easier:
I would appreciate if your subject line on mail to me includes the following information:
dc308 - {Country} {Season}
This first turn I'm also looking for preliminary moves from all of you. If you do not have them in by a week I might look for a replacement for you - so get into the habit of turning them in as soon as possible.
Next turn: Spring 1901 Movement
Next Deadline: Preliminary moves due Friday, 26th of March, 19:00 GMT (7PM).
[b]Upcoming Deadline: Wednesday, 31th of March 2010, 19:00 GMT (7PM).

Good luck, and happy diploming.

Gentlemen,
Thank you for your commitment to the game. I now have preliminaries from all parties and I plan to adjudicate on time on Wednesday. There has been a slight change of timing though - we are entering Daylight Savings Time here across Europe this weekend. The final orders will be due:

I also have note of an absence - Austria will be gone for a week, so do not be surprised if you do not hear from him.

DC 290: Resignation - blueraider0 at gmail.com (Mar 21, 2010, 8:59 am) |
Gentlemen, I unfortunately must resign from the game. I appear to have contracted the flu. Apparently flu season really ISN'T over. And I also guess vaccines either aren't foolproof, or I just got a rarer strain. In any event, I need to reallocate my diminished energy and, after much thought, have decided that Dip comes after friends, family, job, and sleep. So sadly I must leave this interesting (if perpetually frustrating) game. Thank you all for what I must say has been a very unique Dipping experience, and good luck in the rest of the game.
Also, to rest any rumors, that Tactical Predictions press last winter was mine. And clearly, I was really, really, really wrong.
Take care, and for the love of whatever you deem holy, don't get the flu. Getting into a boxing match with it in the middle of the night really stinks. I had a 5 round bout, but got KO'd sometime during the 3rd round. Too bad viruses don't play by the rules.
Best regards,
-Maslow

How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing. The shadow, even the darkness must pass. A new day will come. "It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. and sometimes you didn't want to know the end because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing. The shadow, even the darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you - That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn't. They kept going because they were holding onto something."
"What are we holding onto, Sam?"
"That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it's worth fighting for."[Reply] |
