DC297: Autumn 1909 - Final English Retreats V 1.0 - Dip_Power_915 (Mar 12, 2010, 5:08 am) |
I'm retreating F Bre -> MAO, and F Edi -> Clyde, and then disbanding
one, unless someone can explain why I can't.
Joe, Sultan, and Will, I'd suggest you you put in Conditional
Adjustments based on me having those Units there,
and disbanding one, and not having those Units there, and building one.
Thanks,
Eric of England in DC297.[Reply] |

Hey folks,
Just so everyone knows, if the situation is that Eric had units disbanded due to being dislodged on an NMR, then he's correct the units are not auto-disbanded. That is a side-effect of Realpolitik. If we were playing 2-season Dip that would be the case, but it's 4-season Dip in the WB and the retreats are a separate phase. They DO get to retreat, so do plan your builds under this presumption.

All,
Ok . . . I apologize to those of you this has already happened to in past seasons.
I do not have the ability to provide an updated map from work. However, given that these units are allowed to retreat, I see no reason why they would not be able to retreat to the spaces that Eric has indicated. Please plan your Build/Disband Orders accordingly.
Thanks,
Darryl (GM)

Trolls Lose FOUR Under an Onslaught from the Ogres
Can Anyone Stop the Ogres? Were Elvish Scryers Right When They Foretold Ogren Dominance After
Being Abandoned by ALL Races When They Stabbed?
Okay...I know! I am probably carrying the "I told you so" too far but it IS a LOT of fun for me! What a game! I love the twists. You guys are putting on quite a battle.
To business - we have several retreats due:
Undead F To-Gai-Ru can retreat to ALL SAINTS BAY.
Troll F Enchanted Isles can retreat to BABEL BEACH.
Undead F ZEBOIMS DEEP can retreat to SAVAGE SEA or Pwyll (technically also ALL SAINTS BAY but
that is the ONLY option for F To-Gai-Ru so...)
Of course any of these can retreat OTB. Basically I will need one Undead retreat given that all of the others have one option.
The deadline for that is Sunday night at 8pm CST. I will be out of town for the weekend so I can't get it out sooner. From there we will have a quick deadline for Winter, Tuesday the 9th at 6pm CST. From there we will have an extended Spring 17 turn due to a player vacation (details on that with Winter).
PLEASE double-check. As you have no doubt noticed your GM is quite capable of mistakes!
NICK - thanks for filling in and fighting on until the end! On that note...a bit from our dearly departed Knight...
PRESS
Barring a miracle, goodbye from the Knights! This position was weak when I took it over, but I managed to stay alive by mending ties with the Archers as we fought off the Rogues/Faeries/Trolls. I tried to split up that trio, but only really got replies from Michael (the Rogues), and although there was willingness on both sides to find some solution, he was too committed already to an attack on me, and there was no real way for us to ally as long as he was unwilling to break his alliance with the Faeries.
To my surprise, the Trolls suddenly stabbed the Rogues, and a thin beam of light appeared at the end of the previously pitch-black tunnel. There was a critical moment when some Troll support in the top right part of the board could have shifted the balance to our side, as the Faeries and Rogues were relatively weak here and there was pressure from the underground on Dragons Teeth Mts. A breakthrough to Kingdom of Hearts could have allowed me and the Archers to hold on indefinitely. There wasn't much communication, and Warren decided instead to devote his units to the top-left part of the board in Anvard and Immoren, trying to destroy the Rogue position here. The Archers were knocked out, and then the top right part of the board from Cathal to Andarien Plain got rolled up by the Faeries/Rogues, and it was only a matter of time for the Knights.

ACD236/DC288: Balkans1860 Spring 1863 Results and... - Kenshi777 (Mar 11, 2010, 5:38 pm) |
No little historical blurb this time - a nag instead. Please remember
to send in prelims *as soon as the results are read* - You can always
change them later. Please check your orders to ensure they are
accurate, and spelled correctly - use only the approved abbreviations
or the full name. I'm being much more lenient in the GM seat than
normal because I need a good playtest out of this game to see where
the variant needs work (and it does, in multiple places). So please
help me out by doing your part to have orders in on time and accurate.
All that said - interesting season here. A disconnect between the
previously solid Greeks and Ottomans, as the capital falls to the
Bulgarian invaders. Italy faces a difficult defensive choice in the
fall. Austria repels the Romanian/Serbian alliance for now, but
yellow and grey forces advance on the flanks. Bulgaria and Serbia
seem to have mended fences over the Sofia incident.
No retreats needed - only F Rome was dislodged, and it is forcibly
disbanded. So our Fall 1563 deadline will be THURSDAY, March 18,
2010, 1700 EST. I will do my level best to publish results as soon as
possible after this deadline - please remember to turn in prelims as
soon as possible after this announcement. Please keep CCing me on the
player negotiations also!

1648 091010: Update - charlesf (Mar 11, 2010, 5:08 pm) |
The overall trend with these changes and the ones you already made in the Med are to limit stalemates.
Well, I'd say the East-West confrontation we've seen in the present game presents something of an anomaly. Yet I indeed am aiming for more fluid play. The most important step here was to reduce the victory criterion to 15. The second-most important one the reworking of the Central Med.
It also slows thrusts to some degree, which is fine and in keeping with the game.
Well, my aim is to keep the map very integrated. I want to keep players even more on their toes.
Specifically, all of the ones that Nigs mentioned - Franconia and the Prussias - seem good to me. Making Turkey non-contiguous influences it to move east and west instead of to the Balkans - is this what you want?
Don't think that A Damascus was going to march straight into the Balkans in the old versions either. But it could provide backup to A Belgrade and hence that very possibility somewhat diminished the attractiveness of a South-Eastern thrust by Austria.
A Damascus can really turn into any direction:
- Karaman gives you a play for Candia and some protection against first-year attacks vs. Constantinople.
- Armenia also allows one to cover Constantinople, covers a "soft spot" and presents a possible play for the Crimea or Voronezh.
- Azerbaijan is somewhat similar to an Armenian opening, but probably not much of an opening move.
- Persia is obviously the "grow now" option.
- Egypt presents a play for Tunis. More attractive now that F Sevilla is somewhat less of an immediate factor.
I'm liking the added incentives for moves to Egypt and Armenia.
With regard to changes in Russia, I would consider splitting Novgorod to facilitate an attack on Sweden...
That one of the ideas I'm looking at. Carving out a norther buffer out of Novgorod, while also extending Moscow to the northern shore.
and I would also break up NRG. The possibility of NRG C Sco - Nov amounts to a sort of long-range blitzkrieg unseen anywhere else on the map. (My issue is more about consistency than historical accuracy.)
Ah, until I reached v2.5, NRG indeed didn't border Novgorod. Here's the 2.0 map (which is basically where I had left things off in 2004, the new work in 2009 began with v2.1 which was already an entirely different beast):
Yet this type of map arrangement created kinda a D-W-R string rather than a genuine "Arctic triangle". I wanted Denmark (and indeed England, then an "Arctic quadrangle" to be able to attack Russia (and vice versa). Makes for better gameplay and is also historically justified.
Indeed, only up there can one power "leapfrog" two basically closer powers to attack the another. I like that a lot!
But there's another reason why I'm showing you this mothballed old map version. It shows you an arrangement of Poland's buffer provinces in the East (save for Polotsk, which I introduced with v2.1) I'm now once again considering. Moscow is, as you can see, shielded by the Smolensk buffer (which corresponds to the territory Poland lost to Russia later in the 17th century)).
Cheers,
Charles[Reply] |

Hey all,
First off, we've had a busy turn with lots of moves sent in by several players. So make sure I have your most updated orders listed (Hopefully I got 'em all right). One player, however, didn't send in any moves, so the german forces are in civil disorder again. In general though, the western deadlock continues.
The East more than makes up for the lack of movement in the west, as Five(!) centers change ownership. The french unit in Vie seems to be playing the mercenary and helping the highest bidder, this time helping the austrians into Budapest. Russia loses that center, but waltzes into Bulgaria. The Italians take Trieste without support, and defend Greece and Serbia. The balance of power has definately shifted. Turkey tries valiantly to defend his lands, but under seige from all sides it appears to be an uphill battle.
Only one retreat this time around, though. Russian Army Bud has to retreat, and Gal's the only open spot. So I moved him there. Nick, if you want otb, let me know. Retreat changes and build/removals due tomorrow at 15:00 GMT.
Thanks All

.ExternalClass DIV {;} Not much action this season - England convoys to Brest, while Turkey sends two fleets westward. Austria and Russia both order all their units to hold. Russia thus takes over control of Munich.
The only winter 1909 adjustments, due tomorrow, Friday 3/12 at 3pm Central (US) / 21:00 GMT, is a build for Russia. Although Austria lost a center, Laurence only gives up a banked build left over from last year. Michael, I'll post the adjudication right away if you send me a build order marked "final". Thanks!

NNIGTFML w45 builds! - rodtheworm (Mar 11, 2010, 4:28 pm) |
Don't suppose I could threaten to throw the game to the other side if either of you attacks me, could I? I don't think this game would head to a 2 way draw if it continued, I'm just trying to work out whether I'd survive a solo or if there's a chance of edging in as the small one in an unstable three-way...
Hmm. I think I'll put in a provisional vote tonight and decide tomorrow whether or not to let it stand. Feel free to persuade me of the wisdom of voting for the draw, Greg and Fredrik.

dc291 fall 1909 results! - coryfucius (Mar 11, 2010, 4:19 pm) |
Not much action this season - England convoys to Brest, while Turkey sends two fleets westward.
Thanks!

Hey all,
First off, we've had a busy turn with lots of moves sent in by several players.
Thanks All
John

Ah, if you guys think the extra buffer has merit, I guess I'll draw a map for you to comment upon. Would move Poland and Russia further apart.
As for redrawing Moscow to touch NRG and add that buffer, yes, it'd broaden the front in the far north. Nov would be not the one province through which Russian units have to pass to get at Sweden. But it'd be a slow developing attack - as I consider appropriate for the Northern wilderness. And of course, the Danes could descend on Moscow rather than on Novgorod...

Charles,
I like the idea of giving Austria more incentive to move east instead of west. Another buffer on the Russo-Polish border is a good idea both ways, taking pressure off both and allowing both to consider moving elsewhere. Is the idea behind extending Moscow to the White Sea an opportunity to give Russia more space from which to invade Sweden?

[quote:662e37b332] Nigs,
well, I'm not sure this change makes Swabia less of a bottleneck (which don't have a particular issue with). Had I chosen to have Franconia border Hesse, then yes. But I didn't want to make the HRE have the makings of a doughnut, with Hesse/Franconia being the hole. That's why I added the territory of the Würzburg bishopric to Swabia (i.e. that salient towards Saxony).
For Austria I'd say this change is a mixed blessing. It somewhat complicates Austria's opening game, which I welcome. Getting three SCs in 1649 struck me as being too easy in the past. Bavaria can't help Austria into Saxony (and vice versa). This in turn makes Austria more dependent on support from pretty one single source of minor power support in Germany, namely Swabia. And that makes the job of those interested in curbing Austrian growth quite a bit easier since successfully competing for DPs in Swabia will most likely slow down the Emperor.
So I understand this change to be about recalibrating Austria's influence in the Empire as compared to those of others.
Also, the change down in Turkey might also tempt Austria more into a Balkan direction. After all, now that Damascus and Constantinople are no longer adjacent, A Damascus can no longer more to Constantinople in an effort to back up A Belgrade if need be. In other words, Belgrade is more vulnerable. Next to the opportunity this gives rise to for Austria, it also might have Turkey move into Hungary more precisely in order to check that danger.
In this regard, Fraconia also complicates home defence since if A Prague moved to Saxony or Franconia, it'd be somewhat less useful in fending off a Turkish raid.
Much as the Sultan may worry more about Belgrade, so does a Russian move into Armenia present more of a headache now thanks to Damascus and Constantinople no longer covering another. More of a temptation for the Tsar to go south, but also for the Sultan to move into Armenia precisely because of this danger. All in all, this makes early Russo-Turkish conflict rather more likely, methinks.
And that in turn had me thinking whether I ought to somewhat ease the home defence burden on Russia. Say by adding a buffer province between Nov, Mos, Vor, WRu and Smo. Another idea would be to extend Moscow up to the White Sea (i.e. Russia's northern shore), while adding a buffer between Novgorod, Karelia and Moscow, so that a Swedish move into Karelia wouldn't border both Novgorod and Moscow at the same time.
Considering also a number of other approaches, but decided to hold off of them for now.
Cheers,
Charles
