FLWC: Game-Start! (one change) - FuzzyLogic   (Feb 23, 2010, 11:14 am)
By the way, our Wizards in their mysterious wizardly ways have set up a new email address just for this game, so pls use the amended email address below for Brian.

Greetings!

And welcome to this, the three-hundred and third game of Diplomaticcorp Diplomacy. This game shall henceforth be known as “Furry Little Woodland Creatures”, in honor of the FLWC - standing up for the rights of little (and furry) woodland creatures all throughout the Haven world. With a strong presence in this game the FLWC will surely keep a watchful eye on the progress.

I’m glad you came out to play this! I spend a lot of time thinking of Diplomacy variants and how to make them interesting and challenging… I know most of you - some have been past opponents in complex games, others are running incredibly tough Winter Blitz games, some are regulars that have been playing at dc since the early years… and a few are completely new. All of you have had at least some sort of good impression on me regarding your diplomatic abilities to be invited to the game!

Who am I? (aside from some guy that designs mysteriously ominous looking maps?) Well most of you probly already know me. But for those who don’t, I’m one of the moderators here at dc, and have been playing Dip for 5 or 6 years. I got hooked early on making fantasy variants, and this one is by far my greatest concoction. It took months of work to get it just right so hopefully you find it enjoyable. I live in Lisle, IL (a small suburb of Chicago) w my wife and 3 little kids… I do network administration and web design work for a living. (intros are welcome from all – we’re going to be here a while!)

Keep in mind I tend to run a consistent and predictable game. If I say results are going to be out, chances are they will be so within a short time after the deadline. Thus, if you don’t get moves in on time you are subject to a typical NMR (no moves received) in which all your units will hold. These have a funny way of turning the game upside down unpredictably so if you don’t want to find your race suddenly in chaos and regrouping just to stay alive, use prelims. Use them all the time. Consistently using prelims is the best Dip skill you can ever learn. (right after lying, cheating, stealing, plotting, misdirecting, evading, … )

So what are we waiting for? Who are you playing? Find out now!
If any of you don’t have a “Location” on the website, feel free to update that (or let me know and I can) – it’s always fun to know where your enemies are playing from).

Let’s set the first deadline for Wednesday March 3, at 3pm Central US time (2100 GMT). This gives you a little over a week for the first turn (longer than the typical deadlines will be).
Enjoy!

FLWC - A few provisos, a couple of quid pro quos - FuzzyLogic   (Feb 23, 2010, 10:51 am)
As if a game-start isn’t enough, here’s some light reading material to get you in the mood…

I’m sure it’s all stuff you’ve heard before, but read it anyways!

Results - If you ever don’t get results from me, or think for any reason I’m not able to reach you, you can check up on the game at the website. I will post every turn there as soon as it’s out, so you can always know for sure if you’re just out of the loop. Not getting an email from me is never an excuse for missing a turn! The game results will always be available in 3 forms:
<![if !supportLists]>· <![endif]>An email, from me to you.
<![if !supportLists]>· <![endif]>The game page, www.diplomaticcorp.com?game=dc303.
<![if !supportLists]>· <![endif]>The website forum.

Press - I highly encourage press! It often adds a whole nother level of fun to the games… It can be sent to me, and will be posted anonymously with the results of the turn. It can be directly from your own civilization, or even allegedly from others… anything is fair game.

How will the deadlines work?
I like to run about 1 week per turn. Major phases (spring or fall) will be about 5 days, with the following retreat or build about 2 days. I tend to run a very tight ship! Don’t expect to get reminders from me. Because my games tend to stay on schedule, you can expect results will come out when I say they will… If you don’t have moves in by the deadline (or after the deadline but before the time I start to adjudicate) you’ll just get an NMR. You can submit moves (or revisions) after the deadline if I have not started to run the turn yet.

How will I handle NMRs?
If you’ve either played in one of my games or read my house rules (www.sims-family.net/dip/houserules.htm) you’d already know! Expect results to come out relatively close to the deadline, come rain or shine. Any NMR in the first year will be cause for immediately replacing you – I don’t allow them in the first year and insist on prelims then. After that, it’s just an NMR and they will play out however they do. Units will hold, etc. Given the players in this game I don’t expect NMRs will be a problem at all.

You just said “prelims” – what are those?
Prelims are short for preliminary orders. They’re what you send in before your real orders. You turn them in right away after you get results from me (like- now), before you even know for sure what you want to do. Then throughout the course of the week you can change them as often as you like. When I run the results, I’ll use the latest single set you’ve sent me (ignoring earlier emails). The reason to go to this effort is so that when you get called out on last minute travel, get stuck in meetings, stay out w friends, or your dog eats your computer, you already have at least something turned in. That is almost always better than units just holding.

What if I’m going to be away?
No problem! Just let me know in advance of the turn in question and I’ll be happy to set future deadlines accordingly. However, I will rarely, for any reason, extend a turn currently in play. That is, once a deadline has been set, “I need more time to hear from a player” will be met with a bellowing evil laugh and incredibly witty and well thought out editorial about how deadlines are not extended mid-turn. Part of the fun of the game is time management - so if you can write me to request more time, you can write your best shot at some orders.

I think that’s about it for now – if you have any questions feel free to shout them out…

Dan,

I'm not sure what sort of reaction you were expecting to get from me.  I am perty sure I have done nothing that was not in my House Rules . . . except to try and accomodate all of you.  By all means, the DiplomaticCorp site is always on the look out for new GM's, feel free to take a wack at GM'ing yourself.

Subject: DC270: German Solo!

All,

I have not heard from Dan (Austria); either in response to the public vote for a German Solo or with order for the current season.  However, as Dan has now missed two deadlines, house rules are that I replace him.  Still, due to the fact that Germany can occupy two supplies this season . . . and I see no way a new Austria would be able to change the out come, I am reluctant to get a replacement just to end the game the way we all know it will end anyway.

Therefore, I have decided to remove Austria from the game and call it a unanimous vote for the German Solo.  Congratulations, Joe on the victory.

At this point it is of interest to hear how the game developed for each of you in End-of-Game statements.  If you are not familiar with this, please take the time to review the game (I have attached the dpy file for your use, or you can see the progression of the game by using the slide show feature on the DiplomaticCorp site).  Try to remember where key actions occurred during the game and explain why you did what you did . . . when you did it (I hope that makes sense).  Also, try to view things from the view of the other players who will be interested in why you stabbed them when you did . . . or why you did not follow a particular agreement or another.  If you were with this game from the beginning, remember that some action you took early in the game will be of interest to others as well; so, don't just look at the last few years but all the way back to the beginning . . . if possible.  If you are a replacement player, please explain the situation when you joined the game and what influenced you to play the way you did . . . or didn't.

Congratulations again to Joe on the German Solo victory and I look forward to reading your EOG Statements.

Darryl (GM: DC270)

1648: Variant Changes - charlesf   (Feb 22, 2010, 8:18 pm)
Jorge,

the Med may become a real drain on Spanish and Turkish resources, simply because there's more ground to cover. This is supposed to counteract their positional advantage of being corner powers.

The opportunities for a decisive campaign are greater, which in turn may compell other powers to engage in the Med when they might have not under previous variant versions.

That being said, Turkey and Spain are now actually farther apart. So perhaps that might help some find a peaceful settlement in the Med.

The Gulf of Sidra is the least certain change. But I like having a real southern axis of advance. Gives especially Turkey more potential leverage over Tunis, which is part of the wider rebalancing scheme.

More fluidity and drama. That's what I'm gunning for.

Cheers,

Charles

Hi Charles,

One of the maps you sent me didn't have SOS and GOS, so now I can see everything you described. All of the changes work for me in accomplishing what you seek. It creates more fluidity in NW Europe, gives France a better shot at the HRE, cuts the one overpowered nation (Spain) down to size, and creates a more interesting Med situation. Given that the Med will still probably be a Turco-Spanish affair, I don't know that you need the extra centers for more maneuverability, and you may not need GOS. Finally, while these changes will all contribute to more fluidity, and therefore more stabs, it's still a good idea to see what happens if you reduce the winning number to 15.

The eastern powers and England continue their assault on Germany, and this time the Kaiser is unable to resist. Outside Germany and its immediate neighborhood, there is precious little movement.

Only one unit is dislodged, but the German army in Kiel has nowhere to retreat and is destroyed. We thus move directly to fall 1907, for which orders will be due Thursday 2/25 at 3pm Central (US) / 21:00 GMT. Thanks!

Hi guys,

lately I've been considering a number of changes to the variant. Since I thought you might be interested in what I'm planning for 1648 and appreciate any feedback, here's a brief overview of the various changes I have in mind:

1) MERE 15 SCs REQUIRED FOR A SOLO VICTORY:

In other words, you need only 26% rather than 31% of all SCs to become the continent's hegemon. This is supposed to both make solos easier to achieve and tempt players to stab more often.

2) ADDITION OF LUXEMBOURG BUFFER SPACE:

Not only does this afford all player more room for manoeuvre, but it grants France better access to the Empire and removes the intitial leverage the Spanish Army of Flanders enjoys over Lorraine, to date the primary gateway for France towards the East.

3) VENICE & TUSCANY NO LONGER ADJACENT:

Lombardy's importance is enhanced now that it also borders the Papal States. This somewhat lessens Franco-Austrian friction as spheres of interest in Italy are more easily separated. There's now also a symmetry regarding the number of minor powers may lend support Austrian and French attempts in taking their respective Italian "natural SCs". Which means also that Austria can more easily kept out of Italy than under the present rules.

Much as the addition of Luxembourg, this change is in part explained by my desire to help France.

4) ADDITION OF STRAIT OF SICILY & GULF OF SIDRA SEA SPACES:

This equally provides greater room for manoeuvre. The Tyrrhenian was too much of a bottleneck, for my tastes. Sardinia and Sicily both gain greater relevance. Spain's Naples becomes more of an outpost considering the now greater distance to Sevilla. And Tunis is further removed from Spain's power base. Indeed, I think the power balance in the Med considerably shifts towards Turkey. So Spain has quite a bit more on its plate, which in turn affects France's fortunes. I'd argue Spain now feels really thinly spread, much as it was historically.

Now, the Ionian remains as central in Spanish-Turkish affairs. But there's now also a Southern line of advance across the Mediterranean.

Anyway, what do you think of these changes shown on the below map? And if you have any ideas of your own as what to change, I'd be interested in those too. Smile

Cheers,

Charles

I still have not heard anything from Michael (Italy).  Mike if you are still with us, please drop me an email and let me know what is going on.  Also, I have nothing from Joe B. (France); though, the French position is heavily boxed in at this point and I assume that Joe had no orders.  However, Joe if you are still with us, please drop me and email confirming this assumption (even better, drop me an email with a hold order for your remaining unit).  So, Italy and France NMR this season.

I use RealWorld/Realpolitik as my clerical staff. I also use it when submitting orders to avoid this sort of thing. Looking at the map image alone, the space in question is easily misread and subsequently misspelled. I'm sure others are too, but I've had a run in with this issue already.

Since no official abbreviation list was made available and we're left with the map alone to determine space names, I think some leeway in their spellings should be allowed, not for fat-fingering the keyboard, but for not being able to read the Latinish names on the map.

Besides how do you know his spell-checker did up and "fix it" without his realizing it when he send?
