1648 091010: Upcoming Adjucation - offdisc   (Feb 06, 2010, 10:53 am)
Harvey,
I've never resigned from a game in my life. I've also never abandoned
a game, although I've missed a deadline or two. Smile

I will vote for a DIAS, but I will not participate in a "mass
resignation" just to prove a point to a GM. I may never play another
game of Charles', but if he really doesn't have time for the game,
*he* should resign as GM or call the game a DIAS.

My two cents...

I have never resigned from a game, and have never gone absent.

As some of you know, a week or two ago I wrote Charles to say that I was on
the verge of resigning from this game.  That apparently prompted him to find
a replacement for Sweden.

I am absolutely puzzled (and pissed) by Charles' newest message.  This is a
Winter Adjustment Phase.  What the heck is there to adjudicate?

Please, talk to me about the merits of DIAS versus mass resignation from the
game.

I do get confused by some of Charles' more enigmatic messages, and
austria's leaving the game seemed to be because he wasn't playing as Charles
wanted him too, in a communicative manner. I find non-communication
unsocial, but not a reason for leaving a game by itself.

I would like to get a move on though

I told Charles 2 weeks ago that I wouldn't mind calling the game, but
I'd also be willing to stick with it. Whatever the "majority" voted
for.

Considering these last messages, it's clear that the majority is
voting for DIAS.

So I vote for DIAS as well. If the vote isn't unanimous though, I'll
keep playing.

I agree with the general sentiment. It appears Charles is struggling with time a little bit. I formally propose and vote yes for a DIAS. This way he can be free of the adjudication responsibility and we can find other games.

I do get confused by some of Charles' more enigmatic messages, and austria's leaving the game seemed to be because he wasn't playing as Charles wanted him too, in a communicative manner. I find non-communication unsocial, but not a reason for leaving a game by itself.
I would like to get a move on though

I do get confused by some of Charles' more enigmatic messages, and austria's leaving the game seemed to be because he wasn't playing as Charles wanted him too, in a communicative manner. I find non-communication unsocial, but not a reason for leaving a game by itself.

Everyone -

My two cents.

I have never resigned from a game, and have never gone absent.

As some of you know, a week or two ago I wrote Charles to say that I was on the verge of resigning from this game.  That apparently prompted him to find a replacement for Sweden.

I am absolutely puzzled (and pissed) by Charles' newest message.  This is a Winter Adjustment Phase.  What the heck is there to adjudicate?

Please, talk to me about the merits of DIAS versus mass resignation from the game.

I told Charles 2 weeks ago that I wouldn't mind calling the game, but
I'd also be willing to stick with it. Whatever the "majority" voted
for.

Considering these last messages, it's clear that the majority is
voting for DIAS.

So I vote for DIAS as well. If the vote isn't unanimous though, I'll
keep playing.

Harvey,
I've never resigned from a game in my life.

I agree with Mike's assessment.  There's no need for us to resign - why spoil so many unblemished track records?  It is within our rights as players to call for a DIAS.  This vote seems to have passed, assuming our brand-new, yet-to-order Swedish leader doesn't object.

So I vote for DIAS as well.   If the vote isn't unanimous though, I'll
keep playing.

Hi Harvey,

For me, I try hard and take pride in always getting my turns in and completing my games. "Abandoning" a game is not something I would be happy with, personally. I would be fine either with a DIAS, or the game being disbanded like it never happened, or if Charles' real-life situation enables a timely resolution of the game.

FWIW while certainly annoyed at the game I am not upset with Charles, per se: I'm sure it is a case of good intentions gone awry thanks to real-life. That said, I would like to move on.

FWIW, I was annoyed at the manner of austria's departure, and discussed with Dirk and Harvey my concern sat that stage, and was persuaded to carry on. From what I remember it seemed to me that Charles was imposing a style of play as a requirement on someone who was submitting moves, but not talking. I prefer conversations with other players, but don't see silence as areason for a player to be expelled. But I may be mis-remembering or misinterpreting. i am enjoying the actual play, and the variant and players. I'd happily try it again. I am reluctant to have the dias, because I'd love to see how the game might turn out, (will austria fall? will there be a mass stalemate in the centre?) but I wouldn't continue it with so many wishing to end it, so I wouldn't block the dias. I don't always understand Charles' messages, or share his reasoning

Guys,

as it so happens, our replacement failed to submit orders. Despite my repeated warnings to him.

Such is the risk of taking on a newbie to the site.

Since I wanted to give him a chance to explain himself, I did not detail in my earlier note to you the reason for this delay. I was all set yesterday to get the adjucation out. Hoping for a last-minute arrival of Sweden's orders.

Believe me, this frustrates me as much as it does you.

I was hoping to have this game back on a smooth track. While I admittedly dragged my feet in getting a replacement, I don't see how I can be faulted here. I am committed to running this game smoothly to its conclusion. But if you guys want to end this in another way, that's your choice.

FWIW, I was annoyed at the manner of austria's departure, and discussed with Dirk and Harvey my concern sat that stage, and was persuaded to carry on.

Nigs, your annoyance is balanced by the annoyance of others at his gunboating.

My policy was clear on that count. In any case, it's one of those issues you'd rather not have come up. Naturally, I don't begrudge you being less enthralled about that step. Fair enough.

Charles

With regard to Nick, the original Austrian leader, my understanding is that Charles did not ask him to leave.  There's little doubt that a player not talking in a game based on talking whose position is in the center of the map is doing the overall game a disservice.  I was certainly not happy with it, and neither were at least some of the other players.  When Charles inquired to Nick about his unusual lack of engagement, Nick replied that RL had overwhelmed him and he was sticking with the game only out of minimal commitment.  Charles then offered to replace him, and Nick accepted, with very graceful apologies to all.

I'm glad to hear from Charles as to why there was no adjudication, which certainly isn't his fault.  That said, after having revived myself for Gabriele, I'm not looking forward to another delay in a game seemingly headed for stalemate anyway.  I would reluctantly prefer to end the game with a DIAS.

Regards to all from an angry Harvey

I do get confused by some of Charles' more enigmatic messages, and austria's leaving the game seemed to be because he wasn't playing as Charles wanted him too, in a communicative manner. I find non-communication unsocial, but not a reason for leaving a game by itself.
I would like to get a move on though

Charles,

Speaking only for myself, the frustration is a product of your not being forthcoming with the reasons-why there are delays. While on one hand it is thoughtful to protect a struggling player on the other it creates uncertainty and anxiety for the others as there are frequent starts and stops. If rationale around delays were accompanied by targeted restart times this would have made the troubles this game has had much less disruptive.

If you are willing and able to GM in your historically punctual manner and we have a full slate of dedicated players I would prefer to continue. However given that, apparently, the new Sweden has contacted literally no one it seems we are a ways from getting toward being on track.

Actually, if he had gone to Ank, it would have bounced, guarenteeing him survival, since he still owned ank at the time. Just saying.

The board takes on more of a yellow hue, as the Turks raise 3 new units. Russia and Germany each remove an army, while Austria finally is able to build an army after having banked a build for 2 years.

Spring 1905 orders will be due Monday 2/8 at 3pm Central (US) / 21:00 GMT. Thanks!

ACD236/DC288: Balkans1860 Fall 1861 Results - A.E.... - Kenshi777   (Feb 05, 2010, 4:12 pm)
"Austria est imperare orbi universo." "Alles Erdreich ist Oesterreich
untertan." All the world is subject to Austria. Well, not all the
world, but Allen gains the most territory in 1861, turning his sights
on his former Italian ally while continuing his campaign in Serbia.
Emperor York finds success in the battlefield on both fronts, claiming
Venezia and Sarajevo. In other news, a Romanian convoy into the
Ottoman Empire was repelled, as their key strategists woefully
predicted. "If only the world did not abruptly end in middle of the
Black Sea, we would surely have taken the beach" lamented the naval
commanders. (Note to the variant designer, a.k.a. me: do something
about that. Does seem to limit tactical options in the far east.)
Elsewhere, the Bulgarian hordes unleash a fearsome battle cry, and
rush headlong into the fields of Serres and find...two villagers
milking a cow. The former heavily contested battlefield of Serres is
undefended this season, allowing the Bulgarians to advance and seize
key terrain unopposed. No such luck for their Serbian neighbours, who
mount a valiant defense but manage only to save Beograd, as the
supporting Romanian forces in Varna thought the better of making such
a long trip, and remained at the beach. Serb forces pour into the
homeland from distant battlefields, eager to repel the Austrian and
Romanian invaders. And then, succinctly, because I'm tired and out of
witty things to say, the Greeks take Palermo as the Italians react to
the Spring convoy, and the Bulgarians force their way into the
Bosporus. Absent active help from any allies, the Ottomans are
suffering severely under the Bulgarian and Romanian attacks, as the
Bulgarians gain ground on all fronts.

As always, my thanks to all who have been CCing me on player
negotiations - please keep it up!

PLAYERS:

ITALY: Adam Levy
AUSTRIA-HUNGARY: Allen York
SERBIA: Garry Bledsoe
GREECE: Nigel Phillips
ROMANIA: Mike Sims
BULGARIA: Ross Webb

NEXT DEADLINE: We have one retreat due this season. Serbian A
Sarajevo can retreat to Cetinje, Spalato, or OTB. Garry, please
broadcast this retreat to all no later than Monday, 8 February 1700
EST, so that we can proceed to the winter adjustments, on Thursday, 11
February 2010, 1700 EST.

Prelims are most heartily encouraged, as is press, and CCing the GM on
player negotiations (kept in confidence, used for playtest analysis
only).
