DC-239 English EOG - Surrounded by idiots - packrat   (Oct 13, 2009, 10:45 pm)
First off - Congratulations to Tim for a game well played. He certainly earned it.
Second - Thankx to Andy for keeping things moving forward. Nice job as GM!

Surrounded by idiots certainly seems to be the prevailing tone to go with the neighbors
fate foisted upon me.

Things sort of started out well, but before I knew it I was besieged by France and then
Germany jumped on into the fray. I shifted and brought forces home but Germany kept
dogging me all the way. Shortly after the first stab by Germany I wrote to Austria and
Italy and asked them to put their differences aside and work with me to take Germany
out of the game altogether. The general feeling I got was that they were thinking along
the same lines and I just sort of reinforced the idea.

As Italy took dots from France I was able to gain slight momentum since French units
were being taken off the board from England. Germany continued to say one thing and
do another and Russia was 100% unresponsive. Somewhere in the middle of all that came
a second Russia who was not much better and then finally, pretty much too late, came John.
But like I said, pretty much too late to get anything going.

Then, wonder of wonders, we got a new Germany. I think this genius did about as much to
advance the Italian cause as Italy did!! He was as unresponsive as the original Russia and
seemed utterly set on getting Italy the solo. I saw the Italian solo coming, and told him (Italy)
so, but there wasn't much that could be done to stop it. Especially when the new Germany
came in and caved. The Italian solo COULD HAVE been stopped had a better player taken
the position.

And that's about as far as I'm going to go with it. Yes, folks have said my threat not to play
with him again is an empty one - but the only way I'll be on a board with him is if one of us
enters a game as a replacement. And since I have stopped that practice it isn't likely.

Guys,
Pretty impressive turn for Italy. Despite a last minute change which included a misorder, Tim finally managed to capture Munich. Plus, with the timely stab of his ally and the capture of England's last center, we have a winner. Congratulations to Tim for his first PBeM solo (that's right, ever.)
I've taken the liberty of forcing all retreats, regardless of the number of available options, in order to get us to the winter and an official finale. If anyone's butthurt about this command decision, feel free to complain about it in your EoG (that means I hope to see some!)
Thanks all for a great game, especially Packrat, Andrew and John, who are all replacements. And yes, though Scott came in after less than a year, he still counts.
As stated in a roundabout fashion above, I'd love to see EoGs. Feel free to "Reply All" to this email when composing.

DC-239 Fall 1912 Adjudication (dc239) DamienThryn Oct 17, 11:15 am
Agreed, thanks a lot Wolf for GMing.

Well, I can't speak to much but the endgame as I came in so late, but my basic strategy was to survive and possibly participate in a draw.  The immediate concern was to stop Austria from soloing outright - he'd do it through me and I working with Italy had a chance at stopping him.

While I entertained the thought of working with Austria in return for getting my home centers back, he didn't like the idea and I found Italy to be more accommodating.  I didn't know England and Russia's stand but I could see both cooperating with Austria to ensure survival.  So I pointed out to Italy that by taking the English centers he'd offset any losses and be able to build fleets in the Med - Austria's true weak point.

With only one fleet Italy had the ability to eventually break through and threaten the entire Austrian southern wing.  With Italy and I stalemating in Germany, either the north or south would become vulnerable.  Austria did the smart thing and garrisoned the south - at the cost of allowing me to land forces in the Baltic.

Long term if Italy had not wanted to solo things could have gotten really interesting - It looks like with his help I could have reclaimed Germany and Russia and I had found an opening for cooperation.  Would have been fun to have rebuilt Russia and Germany and see where that could go.

But I don't blame Italy for taking the solo when he had the chance - and although I figured it was coming it seemed wise to not try to keep him from getting that last center or two, when Austria would have been more than happy to kill me off in order to try and win himself.

Good game all.

First hats off to the GM (whoever said gming was a thankless job!) and as white wolf mentioned earlier this is my first pbem win so dc239 will always be a special game for me. I guess the main factor of my succsess was my alliance with Austria that we both worked at very hard to get going and maintain. It would have been just as satisfying to pull off a it/aus draw but in the end Im glad austria stabbed me. And I just gotta know austria was that move into ven early in the game a misorder or did you plan that? That was pretty much the low point of italy; foreign troops in ven, shut out of turkey and a unfriendly france. Luckily, France wasen't all that active and I managed to roll over him. Unfortunatly that was a big part of the game inactivity and replaced players that allowed austria and me to do so well. I diddint even talk to a russian once! Thanks for all you replacement players who took over hard positions and kept this game running smoothly. As to my final victory push I couldnt have done it without germany I wont speculate why but will leave it to the Kaiser to explain I will just point out that germany IS around to take part in the ending and I am much happier that it is him and not the previous Kaiser. Somewhere in the midgame when austria just started to attack germany I decided to leak austrias turn to the kaiser under the condition he tells no one. So what does he do? Forwards my email to russia! At that point I cancelled my plans to stab austria and swore to myself to destroy germany....I only have one word of advice and its to austria. Your stab and grab happened a few turns too soon. If you had just waited alittle it could have been you with the solo.
Thanks All!
Tim Fuhrmeister.

Gentlemen,

We have had a disruption in the service provided for this game. It seems that our Italian player has overestimated his available time and has regretfully stepped down. While we are waiting for a replacement, feel free to send communications to each other and preliminary orders my way.

We will allow the new Italian a few days of communication before the next turn will be due, so that will push back the schedule a bit.

Expect more once I know who we have on board as a replacement.

NNIGTFML update! - FuzzyLogic   (Oct 13, 2009, 2:51 pm)
Well folks our previous Brazil has disappeared somewhere into the ether, and so stepping forward we have Fredrik - and with him comes a new llama to feed. Or be fed... Or be fed to someone, your call. Let's all welcome Fredrik to the game! All at once now...

"Not now, I've got to feed my llama".

So get on that. And when you're done, get back to him. Cuz he's Brazil, and we all know Brazilians are traditionally known as ravenous monsters willing to feed upon the souls of their neighbors. Fredrik should fit the part nicely.

I'm going to extend the turn a bit <groan!> but I want to give our newcomer a chance to orient himself. So the deadline is Friday! 10/16, 4pm Central / 2100 GMT.

Good luck!

DC 260 (Asian): F1907 - AceRimmer   (Oct 13, 2009, 9:13 am)
Tien Shan, Land of Disbanded Armies. First it was India. Now, it's Persia. Things get a little dicey this season. For instance, Indonesia double-supports Japan into the Sea of Okhotsk; the only problem is that Japan sits pat. Persia supports himself into Afghanistan, and the thrice-supported Mongolian Horde dislodges and destroys the Tien Shan Persian army. And Indonesia kicks the Indians out of the Arabian Sea.

So, as you heard, the Persian army disbands.
The Indian fleet in Arabian Sea can retreat to Bombay, Eastern African Sea, Persian Gulf, or OTB.

Persian earns another NMR but promises me that his crazy period at work is coming to an end.

Assuming the fleet does not go OTB, we are left with:
India: Supp 7 Unit 7 Build 0
Indonesia: Supp 11 Unit 11 Build 0
Japan: Supp 2 Unit 2 Build 0
Persia: Supp 10 Unit 9 Build 1
Siberia: Supp 10 Unit 9 Build 1

So, let's do everything here in the next 24 hours -- a joint Autumn/Winter adjudication:
An Indian retreat (and adjustment if he retreats OTB)
A Siberan build
A Persian build
[Conditional adjustment orders are both hunky and dorey].

Deadline: Wednesday at 10:00 CST.

The Deadline for gunboat game dc226 Spring 1913 is Sunday, Oct
18, at 2400 Hrs. My IMAC is in the shop again so I must
compete with my 17 year old son for computer time. Delays of
up to 24 hours may occur. The good news is that the tech
discovered my complaint about the speed going up and down is
true. Sorry for delays these troubles may cause.

I speak for all in thanking Mike Hoffman for his
contribution to the game while in command of the always
tricky AUSTRIAN position.
TURKEY stalemated by G/E will alliance continue to hold?
Germany, Turkey do SC Tango!
RULES QUESTION: I CAN DISLODGE MY OWN UNIT? NO!

I remember when I discovered this in a game years ago, it cost
me big time. Not only can you not directly dislodge your own
unit but you can not indirectly dislodge one of your units with
a support, or by cutting one of your own supports. This was a
nightmare to program, it took me years before I got it to work
right without some unexpected bug showing up.
I can not give you the exact rule reference for this as my
Desktop with the Diplomacy Rules is in for repairs, and my
Diplomacy Board Game is in storage wraped in plastic, in a box
somewhere. This rule is handy on occasion because you can
protect one of your units with a supported attack without fear
of dislodging the unit.

It seems a delay will not be necessary at this point, so that's good news.

As for 1906 I just realized I am missing one set of orders. I have contacted the player and have given them until 9pm tonight to submit an order, otherwise I will adjudicate without.

DC267 Fall 2013 Results - MattTheLesser   (Oct 10, 2009, 1:58 pm)
The draw is voted down, so the battle for the Arctic rages on! As usual
the fall is filled with plenty of positioning moves, but points of
interest include a Danish army setting up camp at the North Pole on the
heels of the leaving Russians and a bounce in the Gulf of Alaska that
causes a whole chain of units to remain in place. We also have an
interesting situation for the winter involving our one-center powers;
both the Americans' and the Norwegians' last fleets are currently
anchored in seas that are going to freeze for the winter (see list below
adjudication), so failure to escape to warmer waters would have fatal
consequences!

There are no retreats, so we progress directly to Winter 2013, which
will be due this coming Wednesday, October 14, at 9 pm eastern. We also
have another draw proposed, this time for a 3-way share of the victory
between Canada, Denmark, and Russia. So please include your votes for
this with your winter orders.

Matt

A Arctic Wasteland - Mendeleyev Ridge
A Baffin Island - Queen Elizabeth Islands

DC266 Fall 1906 Results - MattTheLesser   (Oct 10, 2009, 12:53 pm)
After six hard fought years we finally have our first elimination, as
Russian and Turkish forces combine to take Vienna, the last Austrian
holdout. Thanks to Will for a well-played game! As for the rest of the
board there isn't too much action as a lot of defense is played; France
holds onto to his spring gain, Brest, and thus has possession of a home
center once again, and Germany assimilates his spring gain of
Edinburgh. Turkey also continues to sail west, taking a stop-off on the
south coast of Spain to pick up a center.

We have a relatively quiet winter upcoming as just two powers owe one
build each (see below the adjudication). The deadline for those will be
this Monday, October 12, at 9 pm eastern, but as always I will
adjudicate as soon as I have all the necessary orders.

au contraire... - Kenshi777   (Oct 09, 2009, 3:13 pm)
There is a long history of powerful Native American nations all across eastern canada and the NE United States. Many of these formed lasting alliances with the European colonists (if *they* must be included at all Smile

Some will say they were all land based powers, but a significant amount of raids were made along the rivers and the Great Lakes, and to a lesser extent, along the Canadian and NE England coasts. Not every fleet in a dip variant need be a trans-atlantic galleon...

There is a wealth of historical material available at various points in history to make a playable variant here. Consider the Ojibwa (Council of Three Fires), Iroquois Confederacy, Great Sioux Nation, Mi'kmaq, Inuit, and many other Iroquois and Algonquian peoples.
