still playing? - Kenshi777   (Aug 24, 2009, 10:02 pm)
...but you're still playing occasionally here I hope? Never got a chance to tangle (or perhaps even cooperate) over a board with you in ACD or here...and Trout informed me it was an experience not to be missed...

The deadline for Fall 1909 is still this Friday at 9 eastern, or earlier if you all so choose by sending in orders marked final.

me personally... - Kenshi777   (Aug 24, 2009, 9:57 pm)
...I don't see long-running games and tourneys as a bad thing. Most of the PBEM games I've played in any community (Cat23, ACD, and now DC) have typically been at least 6 months, some lasting well beyond a year. Those are the best kind of games - plenty of time to ponder and really shine to the best of your ability.

Now granted, finding GMs willing to run such games can be difficult, and you almost have to allow for GM and player induced breaks (within reason and specified limits) for no-kidding-real-life-gets-in-the-way-reasons. But if such considerations were allowed (since I have two jobs, and my wife has two plus grad school), then yes, I would be willing to GM such a game, and there's no reason I can think of why two tourneys running concurrently would necessarily be a bad thing.

A lowly-yet-vocal DC newbie...

Garry et al,
Thursday would also be fine by me, if everyone agrees. Like I said, I don't mind waiting until the posted deadline, I just thought I'd give us a jump start.
So, please let me know by Thursday if anyone wants me to wait!

Folks,
How's the negotiating going? Seems to me the communication is stellar, else I have a group of players who all understand the value of prelims. I already have orders from all eight of you. I know I set the deadline for the 1st of September, but that's still a full week away. If any of you has an objection to adjudicating Wednesday instead (6 days early), please let me know before then. If I don't hear any votes against by Wednesday at 2pm EDT, I'll adjudicate then.
PLEASE UNDERSTAND, if you'd like more time to negotiate, or if you simply don't like to feel rushed, I don't mind waiting until the official deadline in the least. I just figured that, since I have something from everyone, I may as well try to get this game jump started.

Let me know if you object,
The White Wolf

I know I set the deadline for the 1st of September, but that's still a full week away. If any of you has an objection to adjudicating Wednesday instead (6 days early), please let me know before then. If I don't hear any votes against by Wednesday at 2pm EDT, I'll adjudicate then.
PLEASE UNDERSTAND, if you'd like more time to negotiate, or if you simply don't like to feel rushed, I don't mind waiting until the official deadline in the least. I just figured that, since I have something from everyone, I may as well try to get this game jump started.

Let me know if you object,

DC-272 Arrows! - TheWhiteWolf   (Aug 24, 2009, 9:46 pm)
Folks,
Let me know if these arrows look like absolute crap, or if you think they'll pass. If they're rubbish, I'd appreciate if anyone who can do better would step forward... Apparently none of my graphic programs has arrows.

DC-272 GM Request - TheWhiteWolf   (Aug 24, 2009, 9:17 pm)
Folks,
How's the negotiating going?

I have no problem with Thursday.  I've emailed a couple of players to let them know that my computer finally gave up the ghost on sunday, but it doesn't affect any of the games I am in since I have sent prelims in.  Incidentally, my net access is probably better during the week so if we could avoid adjudications during the weekend that would be preferable.

Folks,
How's the negotiating going?

DC255 Spring 1909 Results - packrat   (Aug 24, 2009, 9:16 pm)
Here's the reality check gentlemen -
I can retreat as indicated and then toss Dark out of RUB and that's that
since he can't stop it. Now Dark is not stupid so in order to ensure his solo
I am sure he will order BUT to TOP. And then that would be 11 and the solo.

So, no matter how you slice this, Dark soloes. Therefore I am going to retreat
my unit in SAF off the board thus ensuring that Dark WILL solo unless HE moves
out. That also ensures the rest of us get marked for survival rather than elimination.

So congrats to Nathan for playing me like a cheap musical instrument and taking
a well deserved solo in the process.

Retreat SAF OTB please.

"Can anybody stop Dark?" That is the question, and the answer appears to be "no" as Dark units can now be seen in Crimson, Ruby, and the Sea of Butter. It very well may be that this game only has one season left...but you never know.

There was only one retreat and it had only one on-board option, so I have auto-retreated Red's A Saffron - Cold. Packrat, if you prefer OTB just let me know. The deadline for Fall 1909 will be this Friday, August 28, at 9 pm eastern. However, if you send orders before them and they are final, please mark them as so and I will adjudicate early!

Well, this certainly is an in-your-face kind of diplomacy. Have you been taking lessons from out esteemed GM? ;o) Joking on all counts, of course, lest I offend anyone.
I didn't realize a solo attempt was equated to greed these days. I thought that was the goal! Of course, it's not my goal to see someone else get the solo, so I look forward to stopping it! (Sorry, Chris, that's the burden of board-leader.)

chris,

i didn't mean for you to think i was ignoriong, i just thought that there was nothing to discuss with you, at least not until you attacked austria and i got some more dots...i only had enough units to hold my centers and attack austria, which is what i did....i didn't mean to slight you by not writing i just didn't feel i had anything to say to you until both of the conditions in my first sentence were met but neither was...i never had more than three centers and you never attacked austria (not that i blame you for not meeting the latter condition, i don't know if i would have attacked austria in your shoes and i got a 2 way in my first dip game last year on DC so i can hardly blame you if you were going for a 2 draw with austria)

i also never attacked you, chris, for one other important reason, my units were never next to your centers...given the opportunity i probably would have tried to swipe a dot or two from you...as i am a greedy bastard--just ask anyone whose played with me--as i agree with the wolf, that is the point of the game, i just don't get many centers cause i'm a terrible player but that's a sob story for another note on another day.

hey, Hey, HEY!!!!! NO bashing the GM!!!!

Seriously though, yeah, Andy and I have been in games together on quite a few occasions.
Unfortunately for him he usually winds up being where I want to go and that usually spells
disaster for him. Nothing personal mind you, that just seems to be what happens more often
than not. About 5 years ago I had a similar relationship with Shane Armstrong. No matter
where we wound up, or if I came in as a replacement, we ALWAYS wound up fighting.

Yeah, I've decided that in the next game we play together, my preference list is going to look like this:

As far from Packrat as possible
Any corner Packrat's not heading for
Any center power that has a shot of eliminating Packrat
Anything else, cuz I'm just going to fall to Packrat anyway

DC Newsletter - Aug 09 - FuzzyLogic   (Aug 24, 2009, 8:22 pm)
Diplomaticcorp Newsletter – August 2009

For those of you paying attention, I’m going to number this newsletter IXII, in honor of Steve who numbered his newsletters in no particular sequence whatsoever.

Believe it or not, this newsletter is important. Why the urgency this time around? As many of you have heard, dc has undergone some major changes this year. The most notable is that Steve Lytton, the guy who started it all, has after 10 years of service to diplomaticcorp, retired from his position as Moderator.

“Are you serious?? Can this be true??” I hear you say…

Yes. I’m serious, and it is true. Steve started dc way back in the year 2000, with the likes of Tony, Felix, Salim, David, Dan, and Jon. (see the About Us page, online.) Since then Steve’s dedication to the site has been matched by no other. He is known to every GM as the guy that would badger them incessantly to keep their games moving, and he was known to players as the deathblade penguin, the flightless bird, the outstanding diplomat who has alone, achieved the rank of the Order of the Alliance – the highest rank ever achieved by a dc player. Steve’s efforts to first of all create our wonderful club – and then grow it into something great are truly remarkable.

With such a major change like this, it's hard for anyone to fathom what the impact will be on dc, and it would have been much more bearable if not for also losing another dc legend/Moderator the previous month - our own Sanford Odonnell, aka Former Trout! We all know Trout is famous for running 10 games at a time flawlessly, and doing about 75% of the data entry on the website - training new GMs on how to use the tools we have, cleaning up the game pages, and keeping everything here in top top shape. Trout's tech-savvy approach to diplomaticcorp has lead to the extensive, accurate, and data-rich environment we have here today. From the game stats, to the the Companion Knights, to the Light Brigade, to the vast swathes of information he has tabulated in the DipWiki, no words can sum up Trout's contributions to dc over the last couple years.

Fortunately like all things involving change, this is not an end, but a transition. I can remember clear back in the day when Steve and Tony invited me to join them at the helm of dc. It was truly an honor, and something I never thought would be possible. Well today I'm pleased to extend this same offer to Garry Bledsoe, and even more ecstatic that he has accepted the position! Joining our team, Garry is officially a moderator of Diplomaticcorp - here to help lead the club into the coming years. Garry has been a friend of mine for a long time, predating our play here at dc when we were at another club. Since dragging him over for dc96 - Return of the Fog, Garry has been a major advocate of improving game quality, reducing NMR's, and putting in place mechanisms for keeping games moving. His efforts are sure to be appreciated by all!

Now what better way to get started as a Moderator, than by winning the Winter Blitz! That's right, with not a single solo previously, Garry has swept the WB09 with back-to-back wins in dc233 and dc246. Congratulations are due for Garry's dominating triumph, and also to Dan, winner of the Top Round 1, and Nigel, winner of the Top Round 2 for solos of their own. Prizes for the Best Stab and Best Press are currently being voted upon. Be sure to follow in the WB thread of the forum for further info.

With the Winter Blitz wrapping up, it's time to look forward to our next little tournament - this one much smaller - the DC Invitational. Going on its fourth year, this little tourney was designed to bring together the best of the best in a quaint format featuring only 1 or 2 boards. This is a qualifier tournament, where players are selected based on some fairly random criteria set forth by Steve back in 2006. Things like - Top Rated, Top New Player, Winner of the WB, and Winner of the DCI. This year we're adding a few categories including Most Promising New GM, Top Light Brigade, Top Companion Knight, and Best Survivor. Invites have gone out tonight - watch the DCI forum for further info!

On a rather unrelated matter, I have to ask - what is it about France that they perform so badly here at dc? See online, under Statistics - in 158 Standard games played, France has managed the fewest Solos of anyone save for Italy, at only 6 total wins - and is not making up for it with Draws either. Traditionally supposed to be a powerhouse alongside Germany and Russia - for having easy 5-center starts, and access to both the northern and southern waters - why is it that France is doing so mediocre overall?

This has been a hectic year for our community, with so much going on and all these changes. Standard games are launching about every 10 days, and 3 variants are currently up on the Open Games board. I'd like to thank all of you for your efforts in making dc such a lively place. Everything anyone does here is completely voluntary, so to everyone who's stepped up to help with a tournament, run a game, or take on a replacement role, your efforts are appreciated, and they make dc a great place for Diplomacy. If you have ideas on ways to improve the club, be sure to post online, or use the anonymous feedback form. If you'd like to take on a more active role - whether your preference is to update statistics, create variants, document strategies, publicize our community, or anything else - any way in which you want to help, be sure to let Garry or msyelf know.

Thank you,
-mike

DC266 Autumn 1903 Results - MattTheLesser   (Aug 24, 2009, 5:52 pm)
So I received the retreats before the deadline, so I thought I'd let
everyone know what they are so that I don't have to deal with
conditional adjustments. England disbands both F Nwy and F StP(nc), and
Italy retreats A Ven - Rom. The deadline for Winter 1903 adjustments
remains this Thursday, August 26, at 9 pm eastern. I have received (and
confirmed) many adjustments already but I am still missing some; I am
hereby returning to my house rules on retreats and adjustments and will
adjudicate as soon as I have orders from all required parties. The new
adjustments due are below.

Short answer - YES!
We've certainly considered it.

But when? With the WB taking up winter / spring, and the DCI going summer / fall, when on Earth could we fit in a Class Champ?

Being a chessplayer myself, our rating system is based on the the same proven system as chess, modified for the variable number of players in a game, varying result options, and so on.

Also getting the help would be a challenge, as well as fitting in potentially two rounds of a tournament. At full length, a 2-round non-blitz tournament could easily go 1-2 years - one of the drawbacks to things like the WorldMasters.

Happy to discuss any ideas you have, or um... any offers to run a tournament. Smile

DC270: Winter Deadline (correction) - dipknight   (Aug 24, 2009, 5:06 pm)
All,

*sigh* It seems that we have lost Josh (Turkey).  His orders are the outstanding set of orders that we have all been waiting on.  Has anyone heard from Josh?

Josh, if you are still out there, this is your one and only warning.  If I do not hear from you in the next 24 hours, I will assume you have abandoned the position and immediately begin seeking a replacement.  Also, you may want to consider posting Preliminary Orders.  According to the house rules, should you be late again, you will be removed without any further warnings.

Preliminary or Provisional Orders (whatever you are use to calling them) is a good idea for everyone.  I personally always post a preliminary set of orders with my GM in the games I play.  However, I may later change them if the negotiations go a different direction that I expected.  So, I not only advocate of their use, but use them myself as well.

Anyway, my apologies to all for the long delay in this Winter Build/Disband season (I hope you all have put it to good use).  But, it seems we are going to be delayed for a little while longer.

Thanks,
     Darryl (GM)

All,

My apologies, but occasionally, when you try to "shorten" a deadline, there are those that went away with the original deadline in mind and do not come back until that deadline is due.

There are two outstanding sets of orders and I have sent the countries that I am missing orders from personal requests for orders.  So, I will post the Build/Disband Orders as soon as I receive builds those builds.  Or . . . I will begin looking for replacements shortly after the original deadline of Monday, August 24, 2009, 24:00 hrs GMT.

Best of Luck,

Rating System and Tourney - Kenshi777   (Aug 24, 2009, 5:00 pm)
Has any thought ever been given to having a rating bracket tourney? Our rating system is well and good, so perhaps we should make use of it in a tourney to match players of even skill competing for a title. (i.e. the below 1150 title, the 1150-1200 title, the 1200-1250 title, the 1250-1300 title, the 1300 and up title) Maybe even some names (rather than just ranges, as it is in chess) - i.e. B, A, expert, master, grandmaster.

And for pete's sake, if this does make it past the good idea fairy stage, let's please not make it a blitz.

Anyone else like this?

me personally... (Community) Kenshi777 Aug 24, 09:57 pm
...I don't see long-running games and tourneys as a bad thing.

Joe, good point you made, so I'm sharing it with everyone (for continuity of conversation.)
I think it would make more sense if Austria and Naples were switched, but there's no saying Austria will never reach the sea. Plus, as I said before, I'm trying to stay as true to the box set as possible.
I'll see what I can do about altering the sea color so there's no confusion about where the Naples-controlled land starts. ;o)
As for a Black power, Nathan, I think I'll still avoid that. As I said before, I already tried to make Austria black - it blended terribly with France's purple.
I'll send out another map (with lighter seas) once I get the arrows drawn in.
