DC243 - German EOG - Viper   (Aug 12, 2009, 12:27 pm)
Good game, everyone. My game report will only be a partial, as I only joined part-way through.

I came into the game needing to submit an immediate retreat and based on that fact alone I came to the conclusion that France was an enemy. With the ability to retreat into Gascony, I had to take advantage of that immediately. So then I started looking for allies in a fight against France and Italy/Russia were willing to help while it didn't seem like England was on board. So, when Turkey came calling saying he wouldn't bother me if I let him walk over Italy, I couldn't do it because I needed Italy to pester France as much as possible.

And so the game went. By the end I was certainly looking at how to get the solo, but as I said a number of times, I've never had a solo and I didn't want my first one to come as a replacement player. So I committed to a draw with the players who got me to where I was and stuck with it.

My compliments to Turkey... you exploited every hole we left you and survived well. Working with you in a future game would be a good experience, I'm sure.

Nick and Kyle... perhaps someday we'll play in a game when you don't rely on me so much... I knew the alliance was secure simply because you didn't have much of a choice... one of the reasons I liked it so much. Thanks for being willing to take part in my crazy convoy scheme. Someday...

England, France and Austria... never really played much with you because you were either gone, almost gone or my default enemy... hopefully no hard feelings.

I had fun and I'm glad the temptation of going for the solo is gone.

Hallo zusammen!

another minor power bites the dust as the Poles continue to carve out a new realm of theirs in South-Eastern Europe, in this endeavour now not only supported by the Emperor but now also by the Tsar of all Russias, who shifted some of his regiments to Russia's South-Eastern border provinces. These developments probably won't be well-received at the Sublime Porte.

The brunt of the Emperor's forces remain however engaged further to the West and now have captured the strategically important Dauphiné, whilst France managed to evict the Spaniards from Gascony. Talking of the Spaniards, we've probably just witnessed the longest circular traffic jam in world history. I'm not sure whether I've ever seen anything quite like it.

Continuing our tour of the map further to the North, the Commonwealth seems to be following the rump-parliament's policy of getting the politically suspect armed forces off English soil and have 'em fight farther from home. Over in Scandinavia, Frederick III reconquered Holstein without encountering any opposition and Queen Christine finally has been able to add the Duchy of Courland to Sweden's possessions.

As for the Johannes Keppler Award, I've made note of all the submitted predictions. I dare say I shall ask for at least another set of predictions further down the road. Perhaps if and when a first power has been eliminated.

French and Spanish retreats are due tomorrow. The fall deadline falls squarely into Charles-on-holiday territory as I shall be arriving by ferry in Newcastle on 19 August. I shall be back home round 10 September. While away, I can't really say when I shall be able to adjucate and there will be some inevitable delays and corresponding departures from our regular Wednesday/Thursday scheme. Not ideal, but lacking a temporary GM replacement, I've decided not to make the perfect the enemy of the good.

However, I shall need one of you to step up and supply all players and observers the updates gif-maps and dpy-save files. So, this is my second call for the "Chief Map-making Officer" vacancy. Anyone...?

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

Hello fellow 1648 diplomats...

I shall be away on vacation starting tomorrow and not back until August the 28th. If Charles can find a substitute or proxy for me, that is great, but otherwise I'll be at all of your collective mercies (or lack thereof).

Cheers,

The AG proposal fails and yet another AG draw is proposed for your
consideration.

Technically I need three retreats and they are:

Turkish A Constantinople can retreat to Ankara or Smyrna or OTB
French F London can retreat to Wales or OTB
Russian F Norway can retreat to Skagerrak or Norwegian Sea or
Barents Sea or OTB

Since Russia has no more dots I am simply going to retreat it off the
board and thank Matt for staying
with his position right to the very end.

That all being said, assuming the units (except Russia) retreat the
following adjustments are needed.

Austria: Supp 10 Unit 9 Build 1
England: Supp 0 Unit 0 Build 0
France: Supp 4 Unit 5 Remove 1, remove 0 if retreat is OTB
Germany: Supp 14 Unit 11 Build 2
Italy: Supp 4 Unit 4 Build 0
Russia: Supp 0 Unit 0 Build 0

Joe, thank you for pointing this out. Yes, typically a player gets put on restricted status after abandoning a couple games, which requires that said player complete a game before the restriction can be lifted. What does restricted status do? It prevents someone from auto-joining more than one game at a time. The system will allow one active game, but not more than that. Not to say that person cant play more, but they would just have to vocalize such to a potential GM rather than use the auto-join feature silently.

How did it fall apart in this scenario? In this case the player was never put on restricted status. The WB games process NMR's without intervention, so nothing raised a red flag here. This is still a manual / human review process, whereby someone has to bring it to our attention for something to be done. Usually I'll notice if someone abandons since GMs come to open games up for a replacement, but a single abandon usually does not warrant a restricted status.

In any case, this account has been duly noted. Please all, dont hesitate to bring up any questionable play. We can be reached anonymously via the feedback form online, or just email me directly, or feedback-at-diplomaticcorp-dot-com with any concerns. It is always our goal to raise the level of play here. This means finding the right balance between tolerance and improvement, and NMRs and abandons. It is a gray line, that is defined from everyone's perspective a different way.

If anyone has suggestions on preventing situations like this (moreso than pointing out any one individual, improving standards in general), please bring them up like Joe has done here. The best thing we have going for us is that we are a community, and as such, an active roll by everyone is the best course.

Thank you,
-mike

DC 266 Spring 1903 Results - MattTheLesser   (Aug 11, 2009, 8:21 pm)
The Balkans really heat up this turn as Austria manages to reclaim
Budapest, disbanding Russia's army in the process, but loses Serbia to
Turkey, who also clashes with Russia in Rumania. In the west France
continues to struggle as Germany now finds himself in Brest and Gascony
and Italy forcibly takes the Gulf of Lyon. Things may be looking up for
England, however, as he seems positioned to reclaim Liverpool in the fall.

We have one retreat: French A Gulf of Lyon may retreat to Piedmont,
Tuscany, or OTB. The deadline for that will be tomorrow, Wednesday, at
9 eastern, but I will publish it as soon as I receive it. Fall 1903
will follow this coming Monday, August 17, at 9 pm eastern.

NMR'ing in one game, while playing in others! - jhack16   (Aug 11, 2009, 5:05 pm)
I and 4 others are playing in DC 247WB.

The game started in March, with two turns a week.

One player, for reasons best known to himself, has after nearly 35 seasons, lately submitted 4 NMR's in a row.

This has as you can imagine altered the course of the game.

C'est la vie you might say, and I would be inclined to agree, apart from one thing.

The member, while too busy to submit moves in a game that has gone gone for over five months, and which is now in Fall 1920, has commenced playing in a new game, DC 268, and has submitted moves to this game while at the same time NMR'ing without any excuse or notification to anyone in the original game.

This type of behaviour is reprehensibile and I would ask the moderators to take action to stop this kind of action being repeated.

In the meantime, Benjy Aarons, aka Finchley Womble, take a bow.

I must agree completely with Joe in this case. The player in question had far reaching effects on this game and the 'still to be determined' outcome. It shows a complete lack of respect for the players that are being affected, and personally I think there should be SOME sort of repercussions for this type of poor play. I know we all have times in our lives where nmrs happen, but starting a new game while continually nmring in another is inexcusable.

Sucks to be Japan. Or so it would appear. India parries and Indonesia thrusts. And the Japanese fleet in South China Sea has no choice but to seek harbor in the Philippines. Meanwhile, the Persian-Indian frontier becomes all jumbled jivy with Indian units (at least temporarily) in two Persian centers. Only Siberia's true intentions remain shrouded in snow.

Personally, I think it's too early to declare a the new world order, but nobody wasted time creating new hostility in the post-Communist Asian world.

The only retreat was processed without alternatives, as described above (Japanese fleets and the Phillies).

So, we'll have F1904 next Tuesday! 15:00 GMT.

Heya folks,

Well, I sincerely apologize for the long delay during the latest
stretch. As Mike sent out last week, the phone lines in the region
here in central Ontario were slightly devastated by falling trees
during some crazy storms. Just another case of Mother Nature flexing
her muscle and wrecking havoc to diplomacy games everywhere.

In any event, I am in the situation where I have to seek out a
replacement Archers player. I've begun the process already, and
hopefully this will not be too long of a search. However, I will be
out of touch and out of contact while I travel to the Stratford
Festival over the next 3 days...

Thanks for the patience everyone, and I will be sending out word once
again on Friday August 14th - just to let you all know what the latest
and greatest news is.

Cheers!
