1648 090623: Spring 1649 Moves CORRECTED - charlesf   (Jul 01, 2009, 12:26 pm)
Grüß Gott!

The very first adjucation is always something special. One has only the (written) word of one's fellow players to go on. Hopes and fears of what the future holds make for a conflicting cocktail of emotions. And how much more keenly are those felt when all parties are embarking on an unfamiliar journey, a first playtest!

Let me thank all players for us being off to a smooth start, having dilligently forwarded me their correspondence and in some cases sharing their strategic intentions with me. It has been most instructive and has helped me catch various mistaken notions in regards to the 1648's rules and geography. I am also constantly reminded that players approach a power position very differently from what I might tend to do.

Few words on my adjucating. Since I'm entering all the orders into Realpolitik and letting it work things out, the map output takes precedence over the written results, simply because there's less scope for me to mess things up with the former. Rest assured that I scrupulously check and double-check DP allocations. I'm happy to send you my spreadsheet for you to review these once the game's over.

Talking of Realpolitik, last night I created less anachronistic unit icons and updated the whole 1648 Realpolitik module (which had at least one bug, I'm afraid). I'll let you know once it's available for download. I've attached the .dpy file (a Realpolitik save game you can load once you've got the new module), so you can load it and have the present map situation at your disposal.

Since there are no pending retreats, we'll be immediately moving on to Fall 1649, its deadline being next Wednesday, 8 July.

Servus,

Charles

PS: Forgot - much to my chagrin - the great press sent to me. Players and observes are most welcome to contribute press!

MESSAGES:

From France:

Dateline Paris: As soon as peace was declared in the streets of Paris from the recent unpleasantness in Germany, the peasants rose up against the nobles in an uprising some of the few literate Frenchmen are calling the Fronde. Seeking to quell the unrest and turn the energies of the French people into something productive, new French monarch Nathan Bourbon has decided to begin mobilizing the French army for further advances to achieve la glorie. Predictably, the revolts in Paris and other cities ceased as hot-blooded Frenchmen (and even a few Frenchwomen) sought to enlist to slaw the enemies of La Patrie. Where these new armies are going, no one has a clue.

So much for my predictions, at least some of them... hm...  this will be an interesting game to watch.

by the way, where are you from Charles?  I haven't heard Grüß Gott since I left Bayern in December (US Army, previously stationed in the Ansbach area) - you from around there?

1648 090623: Spring 1649 Moves (dc264) charlesf Jul 01, 02:33 pm
Benjamin,

while I now live up north in Berlin, I used to live for a while in Passau, a beautiful town right on the Austrian border. I miss the hearty Southern German greeting up here. Further up north at the coast "Moin Moin" is a popular way of saying hello, but hereabouts it's just your boring "Guten Morgen/Tag/Abend" or "Hallo". Anyway, are you in some Armored Brigade?

As for being an interesting game to watch, well, I dare say any opening adjucation is inherently interesting. Can't wait to see how things develop. What's your take as an observer on the board?

DC 218 SHIFT LEFT: FALL results - adjustments due... - packrat   (Jul 01, 2009, 10:47 am)
Hmm - seems I did it again -

I entered the Austrian orders incorrectly. ADR supported TRI to VEN and TRI
was ordered to VEN.

So, that fleet in VEN should be an army and I will correct the map when I send out the
build results.

Sorry for the error.

DC212 - Missing Order Set - Must Have More Beer - former.trout   (Jul 01, 2009, 2:42 am)
Folks,

One of you is very lucky that it is Canada Day and your humble GM is a little off his cooker.  We have late orders - but I'll take the hit here since I'm really in no fit state to adjudge any wars betwixt major European powers.

So say we all.

Actually, I'm not that bad since everyone should drink in moderation.  BUT - if I wake up in my grumpy hung-over state tomorrow morning without a full compliment of orders then I may, in all my grouchiness, seek out a replacement player for the position.

But okay.  The mean GM stuff is over.  Happy Canada Day, everyone!

DC250 My Army Is Bigger - Spring 1905 - Mushaboom - former.trout   (Jul 01, 2009, 2:34 am)
Heya folks,

Happy Canada Day, eh!  Figured I'd get this out before I got all too slobberingly blitzed.

Speaking of Blitzes - the German solo proposal meets with disapproval from one or more of you - but that doesn't stop the Kaiser from doing his best to paint it all black.  Mick Jagger would be proud.  But, there's a draw-back to everything and in this case its the French rising up and taking back the streets of Paris.

There was just the single retreat, as I mentioned, from Germany in Paris.  However - with only the wine tours in Burgundy selling tickets these days, that's where I auto-retreated the Men in Black.  (John, please just let me know if OTB is preferred.)

Barring any errors you all spot in my usually impeccable adjudication, we'll set the deadline for Fall 1905 orders for Monday, July 6th (11:59 PM GMT).  Now where'd I put that brewskie?

Re: dc265 ~ European Onion (dc265) ccr Jul 29, 05:33 am
Hi! I have just asked to join as Italy.

And I already have a comment.

Austrian F retreating from Greece can retreat to Albania or Ionian Sea. The GM retreated it to the Ionian, if Austria would prefer otherwise, please notify me ASAP!

I ask you not to do this in the future in any games you GM. When a player have options, the GM cannot assume his choices. Cannot decide the player do what makes more sense. Cannot decide something is obvious.

As Italy, I argue to Austria that given Turk and Russian moves were anti-Austria, and given Italy is facing french southern drive, then Italy and Austria must to be ally on the defense, and if Austria don't do that then Italy will play suicide against Austria. And that if Austria retreats to Alb, then Italy will move to ION just next, and help against Greece, if by the time the french will have already realized he must be more careful about the lots of idle german armies before committing his units far away from home.

Also note that GM interference is not right because it goes against your own house rules, section 8, and it hurts another topic of the same rules, section 5.

8. If I can skip a retreat phase because all retreating units only have 1 possible retreat, I will order the retreats and skip to the next phase.

Not the case. You must allow the 24 hours to receive a valid retreat order.

5. An NMR on a retreat phase means the unit disbands.

And after the 24 hours, if the unit remain unordered, it is disbanded. How do you want to apply rule 5, if you give orders for the players?

DC 254, Fall 1903 - alwayshunted   (Jun 30, 2009, 4:23 pm)
Hey folks, here it is. A couple of issues to mention first off:

1. I am going to change the time of day that I make my deadlines. It has become clear to me with my new job etc that evenings just aren't working out, so I'm moving the times up by 5 hours. This will make them due at 5 pm my time, or 11 pm GMT on the same day.

2. I have a request for a short delay due to a holiday, which will put off Autumn and Winter for a few days. The new deadline will be in six days, on Monday the 6th of July, at 17:00 MST, which is for autumn retreats. Winter adjustments will be due on Tuesday the 7th. Please note that if I get an order from Russia marked as FINAL I will adjudicate the autumn turn early, but winter will still be due on Tuesday the 7th because of the requested delay.

Okay, now on to the goods. There are rumours flying around about the job security of the head of the Austrian bureau of communication. It seems the illustrious leader often doesn't know where his forces are located, and as a result, orders are often not reaching the appropriate commanders. Russia's attempt to liberate Warsaw falls slightly short, for the time being at least... but perhaps the Turkish armies lurking to the south are there to help....... perhaps not. Lots brewing in the west, with some areas changing hands. Fun, fun fun! There has been a massacre in Brest, with the English army being destroyed, and there is one retreat for Russia... see below.

Here is the paper work:

DC 218 SHIFT LEFT: ALL votes FAIL - FALL orders st... - packrat   (Jun 29, 2009, 7:04 pm)
Okay gents - I NEED orders - they are due in 25 hours. NMR's WILL be handed out if need be.

This is your warning so let's get to it - if you don't have a receipt I don't have them. If you have
to ask, LOOK in your email. I do not have time right now to track down YOUR orders.

Looks like we have more proposals then retreats.

There is one retreat - NAP to TYN so I went ahead and retreated it there. Andy,
if you want it to go OTB let me know in 24 hours or it stands.

We have the following proposals:
1. AG draw
2. DIAS
3. German Solo

Now, a player will be absent from the 23 for a few days so here is what I am going to do:

1. Votes for the 3 proposals are due on Tuesday the 23 at 2100. Please vote for each. No vote
received counts as a "NO" vote.

2. Fall 1910 orders are due Tuesday 6/30 if all three fail.

DC 254, Deadline looms - alwayshunted   (Jun 29, 2009, 4:29 pm)
Hey all,

Deadline tonight, in about 6.5 hours. I have lots of orders that I haven't had time to respond to yet. I'll do that right away, so if you don't hear from me again in the next 20 minutes, or already have a receipt from me, then please send orders soon.

Cheers,

Warren

dc246 spring 1914 results! - coryfucius   (Jun 29, 2009, 4:01 pm)
This time, England guesses correctly and takes Warsaw, as two of the defending army's supports are cut. Elsewhere, Turkey moves to Piedmont and Tyrolia, while the lone French unit sits idle. England sails into Portugal and moves an army back to Burgundy.

The Turkish army in Warsaw has no valid retreats and is destroyed, and no other units are dislodged. We thus move directly to fall 1914, for which orders will be due Thursday 7/2 at 3pm Central (US) / 20:00 GMT. Along with your orders, please cast your votes on the following endgame proposals:

1) concede a solo to England
2) a 2-way draw between England and Turkey

We have received anonymous press, presumably delivered to the Swiss embassy, that pertains to the EGPs:
"A Yes vote is a vote for survival!"

As always, prelims are strongly encouraged! My state's legislature is back in town this week to (hopefully) complete its work on a state budget that should have passed last month, so I will likely be busy this week. If I don't respond promptly, I'm not ignoring you, it's RL getting in the way.

Cory

DC 247: Archimedes' bathtub - AceRimmer   (Jun 29, 2009, 2:45 pm)
Eureka! Progress. Unexpected? By me, but what do I know?

Anyway, disband a Roo-shun. Munich is populated with little blue men. The vaporized atoms of the previous occupants are dispersed within the universe to rejoin their cosmic elemental force. And Italy slides up the boot like a lover unafraid to take liberties.

There are no retreats.

And there is no GM on Thursday (4th of July). I will ask Mr. Sims to cover for me.
