1648 090623: The Tyrrhenian Sea - charlesf   (Jun 25, 2009, 5:51 pm)
Hi guys,

an attentive player has noted an embarrassing glitch on the large map. The Tyrrhenian was labeled as "Ionian Sea", which is of course nothing other than a snafu of mine. Thanks for catching that! I've attached a correct map.

While at it, note that I've opted for the name "Gulf of Lion" over "Gulf of Lyon". That's etymologically more correct and the latter version probably originates from some old cartographer having slept at the switch.

Cheers,

Charles

The Gulf of Lyon was probably named after the city of Lyons. The letter y was also commonly used in both French and English in place of the letter i. For instance, my last name, Leroux, is a derivative of Le Roy, which is "the king" (or nowadays, Le Roi).

dc246 fall 1913 results! - coryfucius   (Jun 25, 2009, 5:50 pm)
I could not locate orders for Austria. Max, if you sent them to the Orders box, please let me know ASAP.

England's attempt to take a solo is thwarted, as Turkey's counter-attack on Livonia foils England's move against Warsaw. England does gain Marseilles, and now is only one center shy of victory. Meanwhile, Turkey takes advantage of the idle Austrian forces and occupies both Serbia and Trieste.

No retreats are due, so we go directly to winter adjustments, a phase in which everyone gets to participate:
Austria: remove 1
England: build 2
France: remove 1
Turkey: build 2

The winter 1913 adjustments will be due tomorrow, Friday 6/26 at 3pm Central (US) / 20:00 GMT.

Just wanted to let you know that I'll be away this weekend at a conference (Friday through Sunday), so may not respond to any emails while I'm away (all depends on how much time I have and how expensive internet access is at the hotel).

WWIV update - FuzzyLogic   (Jun 25, 2009, 8:29 am)
Hey folks,
I've heard from our China player (Doug) who NMR'd last turn... he has to withdraw from the game. So I'm going to try to find a new player, and update you all then. Note I have moves from everyone else, so expect the game will resume in a flurry when it does... Should only take a couple days.

DC 260 Asian: F1901 - AceRimmer   (Jun 25, 2009, 8:07 am)
Rod's orders arrived yesterday evening, but I do my adjudications from my day job, so it waited until the morn. For those of you wondering, the 'consequences' of being late were an NMR on the official DC stats plus (after 24 hours) I reminded Rod that anybody late 72 hours is subject to replacement. Also, if Rod is a repeat offender, he is also subject to replacement. So, that's the heavy treatment. Well, there was also the nun with a ruler whom I sent to Rod's house. As always, the game really relies on your sportsmanship as players, which is usually more than enough I find.

So, now -- like fantasy baseball managers who wonder what transpired whilst they slept -- it's time to check the scoreboard. It appears that India and Persia hit homers last night (3 builds), Russia and Siberia each went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI apiece (2 builds), Indonesia was 1-for-4 with a run (1 build), and Japan stole a base (which used to belong to China). China went 0-for-5 killing your batting average (no builds). In case you're dissatisfied with your team, there are still plenty of free agents who are unclaimed: Egypt, Korea, Madagascar, Pakistan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Winter adjustments are due tomorrow at 10:00 CST (15:00 GMT). Then, I think I'll set S1902 for next Wednesday at the same time.

ENGINEERED PRESS RELEASES
-------------------------
Dear Archduke,

Now that we have the Islamic forces in Vienna surrounded we
feel that it's time to bring Vienna back under Christian rule.
We want to attack Vienna this Fall and would like to know if we
will have your support. May we succeed in taking back the
lands stolen from us by that treacherous Turk!

Yours truly,
The Emperor,

Emporer,

Your request for assistance in removing the Turks from Vienna
comes as a bit of a surprise to me. You see, my only means of
support comes from Budapest, which is sure to be cut from Rum &
Bul. On the other hand, if Boh supports Bud -> Vie, that
support cannot be cut. But if I don't hear back from you, I
will order Bud to support your attack and hope for the best.
Archduke Mike

England,

We face a strong foe with the Turk. He does not talk to anyone,
and yet he has the lion's share of centers right now. This is
not a good sign for our future. Let us not fight over the Med,
but support each other and hold the stalemate line.
Archduke Mike

Dearest Bertie,
We are most pleased to see you holding to your word and
withdrawing some naval forces from our environs...
After your daring and successful strike againts the Turk In
LVN, Moscow is yours.
Please capture with it your experienced LVN Army to keep
tension levels between us low!
Let me capture WAR and we shall progress to greater
things... We may yet see one of our flags raised in Ankara!.
Yours affectionately,
Willie

To Archduke Mike,
Yes you are right, I will support your orderly retreat into
BUD, but fear for for both BUD and even TRI.

1648 090623: The Holy Roman Empire (of the German... - charlesf   (Jun 25, 2009, 2:11 am)
Hi guys,

quite a mouthful, isn't it? Let me briefly discuss the HRE rule.

It being:

The Holy Roman Emperor may build in any SC within the Holy Roman Empire (HRE) he controls. Following SCs (marked by a burgundy red circle border) belong to the HRE (hereafter HRESCs): [list:df6f45fdc8] [*:df6f45fdc8]Bavaria [*:df6f45fdc8]Brandenburg [*:df6f45fdc8]Flanders [*:df6f45fdc8]Holstein [*:df6f45fdc8]Lorraine [*:df6f45fdc8]Lower Saxony [*:df6f45fdc8]Mecklenburg [*:df6f45fdc8]Prague [*:df6f45fdc8]Rhineland-Westphalia [*:df6f45fdc8]Stettin [*:df6f45fdc8]Saxony [*:df6f45fdc8]Swabia [*:df6f45fdc8]Trieste [*:df6f45fdc8]Vienna [/list:u:df6f45fdc8]
The Great Power owning the most HRESCs is considered the Holy Roman Emperor and enjoys the described building privileges. The title only is transferred whenever one single Great Power other than the present office-holder (initially Austria) has the most HRESCs.
Note there is no true vote, so players may not make their HRESCs count for another power. I considered such an approach, yet ultimately decided that whoever is strongest within the HRE would have been elected by the eight electors and any voting scheme would see the Imperial Crown changing hands way too frequently to make sense in historical terms.

Since actual control (perhaps I should better speak of ownership?) only changes hands in winter adjustment phases, the Imperial Crown can only switch hands during winter.

I might also add that were the incumbent emperor have fewer HRESCs than two or more powers who both match each others HRESC count, the Imperial Crown remains in the hands of the incumbent emperor, hence: "The title only is transferred whenever one single Great Power other than the present office-holder (initially Austria) has the most HRESCs."

I hope you understood the written rules just as I explained it. Though perhaps I should add these clarifications to the rules so as not to rely overly on people carefully reading the rules and grasping their implications. I trust me being the designer makes me think a rule is clear and obvious, when it might not be so for others.

In any case, should you want to try your hand at a perfect phrasing of this whole rule, I'd appreciate it since I myself am not that good at such things.

I've attached a cropped map of the HRC. As you can see, its SCs have burgundy red borders. Also, you might note that the borders of the HRC are slightly thicker than other "country" borders. Tried out starker ways of highlighting these, but didn't like the overall look and ultimately didn't consider it necessary beyond the pretty subtle visual cue.

Cheers,

Charles

(sorry for the second email, I goofed the first one.)

Orders for Fall 1901 are in.

With the completion of the fall season we hear the first shots fired in the east when Warsaw is attacked by the Royal Army of Austria. The Czar is not caught off guard however and successfully repels the attack.

Confusion among the Turkish forces result in Rumania being well defended from the Black Sea, though the soldiers in Constantinople are at a loss over how to carry out their orders to join in the defense. Fortunately for Turkey Rumania was not contested and is safely secured.

With the coming winter, all forces repair to hold up until the Spring when the fighting will recommence. Reinforcements are requested to assemble around the home supply bases throughout Europe to aid in the various war efforts.

As a reminder, the Spring 825 final orders for DC 262: Angstskrik (Dark Ages) are due tomorrow, Thursday, June 25th, no later than 1700 EST (US East Coast).  Sorry for any confusion in the gamestart email, where I originally saying Spring 825 would be due on Thursday, June 23...when in fact, Thursday is tomorrow, June 25th.

Thanks!

1648 090623: Lake Lagoda - charlesf   (Jun 24, 2009, 5:34 pm)

I must confess I made this mistake as well. The little blue line in the Ingria territory seemed similar to the Kiel canal in my mind, indicating that Bothnia was linked to the (previously unnamed) Lake Lagoda. Why is that blue line in the middle of Ingria there?

B., observer

Benjamin, I dare say I was taking it too much for granted that people would read the map as I do. Will add a map clarification note to the rules.

Lake Lagoda is not named. I'm just describing that "hole" in the map.

The blue line through Ingria is the Neva river. It flows from Lake Lagoda to the Gulf of Finland (i.e. GOB). Historically, it was the route viking longships and in our period war galleys took. For the sake of geographically accuracy it is drawn as it is. The idea is that it shows Ingria's canal province nature.

Hallo zusammen,

here are the files I meant to send earlier. The rules document is what I lifted over to dipwiki, but I thought some might perhaps like it as a word doc. As for the XL map, it's greater size allowed me to feature the full space names. So it ought to help you familiarise yourself with the actual names. It's certainly my favourite way of looking at the map.

I should mention a map clarification I don't think I've adressed anywhere. Lake Lagoda is impassable. It's the big lake next to Ingria. This "Switzerland of the North" impedes movement between Abo-Novgorod and Ingria-Karelia. I trust most dippers would interpret the map in this way anyway, but thought I might just clarify that.

Should you have any rules, map or whatnot questions of your own, don't hesitate to ask.

Bis denn,

Charles

1648 Russian message to All - m_don_j   (Jun 24, 2009, 3:09 pm)
Fellow players,

While this may be common sense to many (if not all, if so I stand corrected), but I'd like to take a few minutes of your time to make a statement.

Beeing a long-time member of dipcorp (and a few other sites before that), I have crossed swords with several of you beforehand.

I always treat each game individually and I never let any past grudges or similar things affect my play. While this is common sense, I've stumbled upon several other players whom 'always' ally and/or 'trade' games and who do carry grudges from game to game. It's sad but true.

So in essence, the slate is clean and I will not let history affect this game, or any future games and so forth.

Thank you for your time!

Best regards,
Tsar Mikael of Russia

1648 090623: Winter 1648 Game-Start - charlesf   (Jun 24, 2009, 12:52 pm)
Hallo zusammen,

welcome to the very first 1648 playtest! I hope we shall all find this a most enjoyable experience. Next to the nine players involved, we have three official observers on board, who are welcome to submit any press for inclusion in the adjucations (much as players may do) or simply send everyone public messages.

Now on to some critical matters:

RULES:

The game uses the v2.8 rules and maps (which I will shortly send you). They may also be found at http://www.dipwiki.com/index.php?title=Main_Page , where I shall also be posting progressively more material regarding the variant. The House Rules are to be found on the game's webpage at http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/.

MAIL:

As noted in the house rules, I require players to forward (CC) all diplomatic correspondence they send to me. This is most invaluable for evaluating the playtest. For one, I mean to base some statistical analysis on the players' interaction with each other. Rest assured that all private correspondence will be kept strictly confidential.

- Any public messages need to be CCed to dc264(at)diplomaticcorp.com (dc264(at)diplomaticcorp.com) . That's our online archive. Our window to the outside world, so to speak. I recommend you subscribe to the forum so you don't miss anything that might be directly posted there.

- For your orders, please send them in the following format:

1648: Sp49 A1

The above refers to the first Austrian order set sent to me for the Spring 1649 Moves.

Note that retreats and adjustments are combined into one adjucation. You may make your adjustments conditional on any retreats.

- I encourage players to also adopt the following header format for their negotiations:

1648: Sp49 AST1

"AST1" here meaning the first message sent by Austria to Sweden and Turkey in the time leading up to the Spring 1649 deadline, marked by "Sp49".

DEADLINE EXTENSIONS & TEMPORARY REPLACEMENTS:

Players ought to let me know well in advance when they might be unable to communicate. I may grant extensions if requested for good reason, but advise you to seek a temporary replacement during your absence. I mean to stick to the Wednesday-Thursday routine and do not wish to grant 24/48 hour extensions.

ADJUCATIONS:

I may publish summer and winter adjucations prior to the actual deadline unless a player required to submit orders for that season objects to that happening.

CONTACTING THE GM:

Should the need arise, you may call me under 0049(30)32664404.

I hope this covers some important ground I failed to stress in the house rules document itself. Should you have any questions regarding my GMing policies, be sure to ask.

GREAT POWER ALLOCATION:

Okay, on to the fun part. Smile I've ranked the power preferences of all nine players from 1 to 9 (any "no-particular preferences" being considered a 9). I've added up all those ranks to see which powers were most popular. The higher the number, the less popular a power happened to be.

AUSTRIA: 68
DENMARK-NORWAY: 42
ENGLAND: 61
FRANCE: 66
POLAND-LITHUANIA: 69
RUSSIA: 52
SPAIN: 35
SWEDEN: 48
TURKEY: 41

Spain and Sweden were all the craze. Three players most wanted to play Spain and another three listed her as their second choice, while Sweden also was the favourite of three other players. I started off considering the top choices for each player and resolved any competing preferences by die roll. As a result, four players got their top choice, one his second, another his third and two other their fourth. A last player had chosen no particular preferences.

And with that, I present you with our player roster:
AUSTRIA: Saralegui, Jorge Venice, CA, US DENMARK-NORWAY: Thompson, Michael Chester le Street, Durham, UK ENGLAND: McInerney, Chris State College, PA, US FRANCE: Albright, Nathan Tampa, FL, US POLAND-LITHUANIA: Leroux, Roger Vancouver, BC, CA RUSSIA: Johansson, Mikael Karlstad, Sweden SPAIN: Kremer, Matt New Haven, CT, US SWEDEN: Bailey, Wayne Ballston Lake, NY, US TURKEY: Knemeyer, Dirk Somerville, MA, US

I hope everyone is reasonably happy and that I covered the most important ground of what has to be said.

The Spring 1649 moves are due to me NLT 6PM CET on 1 July. I strongly encourage players to every season send in preliminary moves as soon as possible. This will allow me to review your moves and point out any problems (e.g., invalid orders, missing or misplaced units, etc.) that may present themselves in sufficient time for you to correct them. And remember to CC me on all your diplomatic correspondence. Thanks!

Cheers,

Charles

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that I'll be away this weekend at a conference (Friday through Sunday), so may not respond to any emails while I'm away (all depends on how much time I have and how expensive internet access is at the hotel).

Cheers,
