DC209 W08 NEXT WED NEXT - vegas_iwish   (Feb 11, 2009, 10:23 pm)
Did not have them all yesterday at D/L then got tied up. Processing what I have now. Actually started changing some of the key spots to small letters (that fixed early similiar issues in earlier versions of Amed & worse Sengoku (worse because I don't have that geography in my head to just blow through it). As simple as taking the file into wordpad and changing but have to get all the connective places as well. Until I am sure I will make other changes to this (China & Australia cause the war by moving fleets to SCS & ARA eespectively + maybe sc moves if I can remember how) the effort seems not of great value this late in the game. Would use a file someone else fixes if they want to. If people would just play SSI wargames or SPI board 1s we would not have this trouble...

Why under defaults would F Bru, sitting on an SC bordering a Home SC be disbanded before a unit on a Non SC adjacent to a Home SC?

A unit in a center adjacent to a home center should stay, and the one not in a center (but also adjacent to a home center) should go. The rules for this game say this is the order:

[list=1:84156a985b] [*:84156a985b] Units furthest from the nearest home center before units closer to the nearest home center [*:84156a985b]Units not in a supply center before units in a supply center if equidistant from home
[*:84156a985b]Fleets before armies if still no unique unit selected per above [*:84156a985b]Alphabetical[/listSurprised:84156a985b]
They are equal per (1), then (2) is the deciding line.

DC226 Before Fall 02 Press! - hapolley   (Feb 11, 2009, 5:39 pm)
Fall Deadline 12 Feb almost here!

Prime Minister,

Now is the time when I most need your assistance.

This is my hour of need!

Please do not seize the state of Denmark which it is within your power to do.

The German people have sacrificed themselves twice in your aid, once foiling the Bolsheviks from seizing Sweden, and again not attempting to seize it for ourselves. In return all we ask is some temporary support while the German people turn on their aggressors, the French!

We can hold them back while you build your Northern Empire, but while an invasion of DEN could lead to an early gain for you, it would be disasterous for us and our excellent relations with your fine Empire.

Hold your nerve, honour your treaty and your rewards will be great, among them will be the heads of the French Monarchy!

Kaiser

Suddenly, the press has taken an ugly turn.  Long expositories,
detailed (nay, graphic) descriptions of pain and losses, a call for
united arms.  We have not seen this style in the past.  So, we wonder,
who could it possibly have come from?

DC209 F08 STRANGE DAYS AHEAD - jason4747   (Feb 11, 2009, 3:59 pm)
Mike and Mike,

I do appreciate your argument on my behalf - for what it's worth I agree, but, Vegas is kind enough to be the GM and what the GM says, goes.

I also have to agree that someone did successfully reach the spot and I have gotten it correct in the past. Just too hurried this round. For whatever reason this last two weeks has been a buzzsaw at work for several of us who usually do pay good, close attention.

For what it's worth, the space in Australia's west Coast is hard to distinguish for the same reason so if anyone is able to fix it eventually it might be worth addressing for other provinces. The whole RP and other file types are beyond my technical capacity.

Anyway, lets play on, I think we are reaching critical mass anyway.

Jason

That's fine, I dont really care it's just a game... and an inactive one where 2 players aren't even diploming at that. I only brought up the rule cuz you brought up a rule first. And the rule I brought up clearly states that the abbreviation "will be accepted" unless you're going to argue that abbreviations printed on the map are not reasonable. (it seems you're making that argument?)

But what's done is done, I wouldnt mind having the map have clear abbreviations added, since the ones printed on the map are not reasonable to use. I have been going along this game, just guessing at the spots, under the premise that if an H was swapped for an M, it would be accepted, since they look the same. If that's not the case, then the map needs to be clarified, cuz that's all we have to go on.

What is 'reasonable' is defined by the GM. Not just in this game, but in any PBEM game. Obviously in this case, Michael (the GM) feels differently about it then you do.

Anyways, I apologize to my fellow players for the public argument. I'll just shut up now. =P

Are you serious??

The rule ALSO says:

The GM will accept all reasonable abbreviations. However if an order is unclear and not clarified by the deadline, the order will be declared void and the unit will hold. Abbreviations that could be applied to more than one space on the map (such as NOR and LIV) should be avoided. EG Lvp or Liverpool for Liverpool and Lvn or Livonia or Livonia.

"The GM will accept all reasonable abbreviations". That is blatantly clear!

Is this a "reasonable abbreviation"? Well it's on the map, it looks like HST to me. I would say it counts as "reasonable", as in it can be reasoned that that space would be HST by the writing on the map.

Is the order unclear? Well could HST be anything else on the map? Let's look at the map. Nope... there it is. Right there, one space. Even labeled HST (or is it MST? I cant tell)

If you're going to suggest we follow the rules, then I think there is absolutely no grounded case to say HST should fail!

I am not trying to pressure anyone. Tho you seem to think we should not even discuss it like gentlemen. Other players were even joking about it. I would say there is no pressure, just bewilderment as to why the above rule is not being applied, when it seems very appropriate that HST is not ambiguous, can not be mistaken for anywhere else, and it's LABELED ON THE MAP as such, in such a bad font, that one cant possibly tell if it's HST or MST. And the rules of the game clearly state The GM will accept all reasonable abbreviations. So it fails???

Come on Trout you usually stand up for following the rules... this is a weird position for you to take.

I'll ignore the inflammatory stuff in this email and just focus on the pertinent detail.

Michael uses the default DC house rules, according to the game page. Point 4 of those HRs - (which YOU helped write might I add) state:

As always in all DC games, the GM of the game has the final say and final decision on all matters relating to the game, whether they are covered in the rules or not

What I think of the decision, or what you think of the decision is frankly irrelevent. Michael made the call, based on player questions reconsidered it, and then kept with the original ruling.

For the record, I would have had no problem bouncing in MST if Michael had reversed his decision. BUT - I DO have a problem with a player attempting to loudly pressure the GM into doing so. Especially when that player knows better.

That a player wrote an order, using the letters printed on the map, which as best I can tell by actually looking at the map the M and the H are indistinguishable, yet it was misordered. The order was not ambiguous - if there was another space nearby that was HST, then MST and HST need to be different. But given that's how it's labeled, I see no reason not to accept it. But I guess there's no point, and it's in your best interest to see to it that nothing is changed, but I did want to voice that it was a challengeable ruling, and so I challenged it. Er seconded Jason's challenge rather. Am I not entitled to challenge a ruling? Michael has made his statement, doesnt mean I cant point out that a player used the abbreviation printed on the map, and that was misordered cuz apparently we're supposed to make up our own abbreviation based on the textual wording which only exists on some of the provinces. Because you did get it right, I'll give you a pat on the back for that. I never suggested invalidating your order.

I don't know if I buy that argument. I used the same map that the GM sent out and ordered to the same spot. Somehow I managed to get the correct abbreviation...

What exactly is the point of all of this, Mike? Again - I don't know if I agree with the call made by the GM, but it is definitely HIS call to make...

So we need to rely on a 3rd-party program, which Michael does not send out the .dpy files for, instead of using the map he does send, which does have abbreviations on it which are supposedly to be accepted? It definitely looks like HST, irrelevant of what the actual text name is.

Can you at least pls take the abbreviations off the map, if you're not going to allow the ones that are printed on it?

I guess I didnt look at the error initially, but this is silly to not accept an abbrev that's on the map that's sent out.

1 can clearly read Malacca Strait underneath the 3 letters in dispute. That alone makes it clear. The other earlier errors had the same conflict that should have raised a white flag.

Yeah but you have to agree the map clearly looks like HST,
or certainly could be read that way. I mean if we cant rely
on the abbreviations on the map we're receiving from the
GM, then what can we rely on?

Personally I would allow the move as well. However, to be
fair to Michael, he identified WAY early at the beginning of
the game that he was going to be taking a strict
interpretation of the abbreviations. I almost had an order
disallowed because I didn't call the province the right
name - but luckily I included the correct abbreviation in
brackets...

Long story short, I'd say its the GMs call to make. =)

Mike,

To be fair, MSt almost equals HSt on my screen, but it is
no excuse for goegraphy stupidity on my part....

As for that and other error, kids, let it be a lesson to

DC205 - Deadline Correction / French Solo Proposal - former.trout   (Feb 11, 2009, 3:53 pm)
Gents,

Made an error on the deadline - Wednesday is the 18th, not the 17th. Sorry about the mix-up.

Also, as per Packrat's email a French Solo has been proposed. Please have your yay or nay votes on that with your Spring orders (by the 18th.) Failure to vote will count as a no.

Thanks all,

Trout

DC205 The Pleiades - Winter 1909 - Fists of Fury - packrat   (Feb 11, 2009, 3:47 pm)
Gentlemen -
With the latest rounds of builds and disbands it should be painfully obvious that
this is now headed for a French solo. Even IF Russia, Turkey and I could set
aside our differences - and with Russia we can't - we could not realistically stop
that from happening.

Kiel will fall shortly with Denmark and Berlin not too far behind. That puts him
easily at 16 for the fall. If he plays it right, and he has been, then Sweden will fall
soon as well. Add in to that mix Warsaw and there you have your 18. Sure, there
may be a few other dot swaps but in the end France has the solo.

So, to that end I would like to propose a French solo.

DC 211: F1906 Seismic Adjudication - AceRimmer   (Feb 11, 2009, 10:45 am)
Fewer survivors means less map tinkering for me, especially when old allies bounce their orders.

Adjustments are due tomorrow from Austria, Italy, and Russia. One has already been pre-ordered. After that, there is no promise of email contact from Austria until the 17th. So, I will set S1907 for Friday, February 20th at 1000 CST.

Additionally, there is a draw proposal for AEFR. One naysayer or abstention will nix the proposal, so get me votes by next Thursday. All votes are as anonymous as my recent vote for Barack Obama… or moreso.

Austria:
Join Tyl / Rom, Split Pie / GoL (*Bounces with Italian Order*)

England:
Split Lvn/Stp - Join Gob/Mos

France:
NAf and Out split, MAO and Tun connect

Italy:

Russia:

In the Winter, Builds will be (not including any retreats off the board):

DC201 (Viking) - Winter 962 adjustments & Game... - Sturmkraehe   (Feb 11, 2009, 3:16 am)
I also want to offer up tribute for Frank's excellent game. He seemed to repeatedly go the extra mile to make sure everything was being done correctly and styaing in contact with the players. I definitely am looking forward to his next game!

I almost fell victim to my initial success. In the first year my gains far exceded my expectations and I ended up over-extended, exposed, and bearing a big red target on my back. After a retreat and steady hemmorhage of SC's I managed to stop just short of defeat with an alliance with Norge and Svierge (among others). Norge was especially instrumental in bringing the Swedes around and keeping them from finishing me off. ERE's being close to victory played a very persuasive role too. Thanks for the great game everyone. I hate to see it end when I was just starting to expand again but definitely am happy with the results. Jorge was a great opponent and ally at the end and I am looking forward to seeing everyone in my upcoming games.

I liked the Viking theme and the scorched earth was an interesting variant to the variant. It was a very powerful tool, though, and I'm not sure yet how I feel about it's ability to influence the game. I was able to use it to effectively buy time with units behind enemy lines and stop an advance that was eroding what territory I had left.

Subject: DC201 (Viking) - Winter 962 adjustments & Game End

Winter 962:
-------------------
EasternRomanEmpire:
Remove F Cherson Bight
Remove A Trebizond

SlavicNations:
Build A Przemysl
Build A Arkhangelsk
Build A Vladimir

Norge:
Build F Hafrsfjord
Build A Nidaros

Sverige:
Build A Birka

And all votes are in for the Endgame proposals.
Again voted down were the following proposals:
1) 2-way Draw ERE/NOR
2) DIAS
but finally all Powers agreed on this proposal:
3) 3-way Draw ERE/NOR/SLAV

And thus after 12 years of war this Viking game ends
with a joint victory for the Romans (18 SC), the Norse (15 SC) and the Slavs (11 SC). A big hand for the Slavs who seemed doomed several years earlier but managed a great comeback due to a late alliance with the Romans.
A large number of SC were burned down and destroyed forever: only 68 are left of the original 85 SC. So a minimum of 26 was still required for a Solo. It was long clear that it would be unlikely for one Power to get this many SC. The Romans came closest with in 958 a total of 22 SC.
Other survivors worth certainly mentioning are Burgundy (13 SC) and Sverige (11 SC).
Powers that were eliminated during all these years: the ArabCaliphates, Danmark, France, and the Independents.

I'm definitely going to miss the pushing and shoving to escape the deadlocks on the map. As well as the player comments on the side. Thanks everyone for making this game so much fun. Special thanks for Doug for stepping in in 957 to save Burgundy.

I also enjoyed the combination of Viking with the Scorched Earth rules although I think the Scorched Earth rules could use some tweaking to make them more interesting. Would love to hear your feedback: on the fun we had in this game as well as suggestions to improve its technical aspects.
And with enough positive feedback I might start another Viking but this time without the Scorched Earth rules.

DC215 Winter 1907 Results - MattTheLesser   (Feb 10, 2009, 10:24 pm)
Builds in early, so onward we push! Russia raises a couple armies, the
Kaiser builds his navy, and Italy does a little bit of both.

Since we've got fewer players I'm inclined to start setting quicker
deadlines, so I'm going to tentatively set the deadline for Spring 1908
as this Friday, Feb. 13, at 9 pm eastern. If anyone wants me to push it
back to Monday just let me know and I will do so.

Matt

Adjustments:

Germany:
Build F Berlin

Italy:
Build A Venice
Build F Naples

Russia:
Build A St Petersburg
Build A Sevastopol

DC 216 - WOT - Game Hold - Please respond - Githraine   (Feb 10, 2009, 8:12 am)
To the four players who got their move in on time, Thank you, and I am sorry this has gone so long.
We have 2 NMRs this turn, one for the second time.
So we will have to hold while we find at least one replacement.
The second player (who has been contacted separately) has the option to continue.
I would like a vote (it is non-binding but I want all your opinions) on whether or not to adjudicate this turn as ordered with 2 NMRs, or hold the orders for the new player(s).

Please let me know by Wednesday.

Thanks Everyone.
