To all my Democrat friends:
Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2009, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere. DC-227 Winter 1913 Deadline Announcement - BabakTalebi (Dec 25, 2008, 1:40 am) |
Hello all -
my apologies for not responding any sooner - the holidays have made life in the Talebi household far more complicated and hectic than its usual frenzied pace...(question to self: does one person count as a household?). I will hopefully be able to pay this game the proper attention once the jubilation and enebreation period is over and jolly old St. Nick is back up in his polar cave.
As for builds... oooohhhhh so thats how this works ;P
ok... builds coming your way good sire. and to my neighbors - apologies once more for any unanswered emails (well all of them) - I'll be sure to respond ASAP...
looking forward to a great (and quite unorthadox) game.

Folks,
I concur that these builds should be done quickly and without prior negotiations. I've already got four sets of builds in, so let's do it this way:
For those of you with builds already in, make sure you have your final set in as soon as possible (if you wish to change.) For those of you without builds in, get them in to me as quickly as you can.
Once I have all seven sets in, I'll adjudicate. I won't send out results any earlier than Monday, 29 December at 2pm EST (7pm GMT,) in order to give everybody who's already sent me builds a fair chance to change if they wish. I'll set the final deadline for New Year's Day at the same time.
I reserve the right to adjudicate any time in that window, if I get a set in from everybody. Don't be late!

DC-227 House Rules - TheWhiteWolf (Dec 24, 2008, 9:46 pm) |
Folks,
I've drafted a simplified version of my House Rules to be used in this game. I may eventually fine tune them further, but these will be in effect for the entirety of this game (so don't worry about me sliding a change under your noses - that won't happen.)
Mods,
Can I update my House Rules on the DC site myself, or is that something one of you needs to take care of?
Here they are. Familiarize yourself with them, because as of this point you have no excuse if you fall on the wrong side of one of these.
The White Wolf
I'm a Firefly fan and proud! Read my fiction:
http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1369632/
===================================================
House Rules, Simplified
24 Dec 2008
In no particular order:
1. All standard rules of Diplomacy apply. Specific version of the rulebook is insignificant; however, all GM rulings stand.
2. Delays will be kept at a minimum. Missing a deadline (even by a few minutes) will result in punitive action. The first missed deadline will earn a public warning and an NMR. The second missed deadline will result in immediate replacement.
2a. If a country stands at less than three Supply Centers at the time of the second missed deadline, the player will not be replaced. Instead, the country will be placed in Civil Disorder until all remaining SCs are captured by other powers.
3. Personal attacks against other players or the GM will not be tolerated. Any player known by the GM to have made an attack of this nature will be given one warning, and ejected from the game upon a second offense.
4. Extensions will be allowed or denied on a case-by-case basis by the GM. Extensions on the current turn are strongly frowned upon, but will still be granted if the GM deems it detrimental to the game to do otherwise. Do not dispute any GM ruling on an extension, as the GMs word is final in this matter.
5. Player or GM impersonation is strictly off limits, and will be cause for immediate ejection of the offender from the game.
6. All order sets sould be emailed directly to the GM, and only the GM, with the following Subject Line template: "[Game Number] [Season and Year] [Country] [Version Number]". For instance, "DC 222 Spring 1901 Germany Version 1", or some semblance thereof. Any order sets not emailed directly and solely to the GM, or with an inappropriate Subject Line, are not guaranteed to be accepted.
6a. If a receipt of orders is not received for an order set in a reasonable amount of time, the player should assume that the orders were not received and resend. If an NMR is announced for a turn, and the player does not have an order receipt from the GM, the NMR will stand.
6b. Only one order per unit per season will be accepted. If the last received order set for a season contains more or less than one order for a given unit, that unit will remain unordered for that season.
6c. All order sets should contain a full set of orders. If a subsequent version of orders is sent (i.e., Version 2,) previously received orders will be completely disregarded, regardless of completeness of the most recently received order set. No assumptions will be made as to player intentions for a unit thus unordered.
7. In the case of a multi-coastal province, where a fleet is involved, a coast must always be specified. Failure to specify a coast in such a situation will result in the fleet remaining unordered. Again, no assumptions will be made as to player intentions in such a situation.
8. If an error exists in an adjudication, the mistake must be brought to the GMs attention before the subsequent deadline. If an error remains after the next deadline, it will stand.
9. Any End Game state may be proposed by any player at any time. Only proposals made directly and solely to the GM will be considered official proposals. All End Game proposals will be voted on by all remaining players. All proposals must be unanimously voted on by all remaining players to succeed. A player may vote no even to a proposal that player put forward.
9a. If multiple proposals all pass unanimously in the same turn, draws including fewer players or solos will take precedence over draws including more players.
9b. At no time can an eliminated player be part of a draw or have a vote in a draw. Only active players can vote in a any draw proposal.
9c. If a game appears to be stalemated, the GM may choose to declare the game a DIAS if there appears to be no substantial change to the board dynamics for 4 consecutive turns (2 game years.) This rule is most likely to apply where some power(s) have demonstrated a stalemate line that cannot be broken given a fixed set of defensive orders. If the No Substantial Change rule is to be invoked, the GM will notify the players after the 2nd season (1 game year) of effect, allowing the players at least one full year to consider the implications of a potential stalemate. Any declared stalemate will be a DIAS where all players in control of at least 1 supply center will share equally in a draw. Some things that may break a stalemate are: The capture of a supply center; Dislodging a unit; or Player request, with explanation of why the game is not stalemated (ultimately at the GMs discretion.)
10. In any situation not covered in these House RUles, the GM has final say. If a player remains unsatisfied by the GMs ruling, that player may request that the GM consult the DiplomaticCorp moderators. The GM will always honor this request, if made, regardless of the situation.[Reply] |
DC-184 Fall 1909 Retreat Adjudication - camorse22 (Dec 24, 2008, 9:23 pm) |
Mark -
Thank you very much for stepping in. While we're at it, many thanks to German and Joe (if I'm remembering right), too. Drop-outs are the plague of our hobby, and it's guys like you being willing to step in as replacements that help keep it viable. I've done it myself, and it's never as much fun as being there at the beginning, but you're doing a great service to those of us in the game.
The English position made it clearly a mercy job, so extra kudos to you, Mark, for not only taking the position but sticking with it for quite a few seasons when there really wasn't much you could do. German, great job by you, too. You played well -- too well, maybe. I think Russia saw the success you were having against me and feared you would soon become the biggest threat to him directly, and perhaps to win the game.
Anyway, best of luck to you, Mark. Looking forward to the chance to play with you from a game start next time.
Sincerely,
Chris

First and foremost, thanks everyone. This was my first game that I had taken over for a player, and unfortunately, there wasn't much that I could do about the position he had left England in. Essentially, from the end of year two onwards it was the same series of moves, and I daresay I probably didn't pay as much attention to this game as I would have if I had been in more of a position to dictate events on the board. As it were though, I think my two pieces were able to do quite a bit of dictating in the west though. Lastly, thanks for GMing and being maganimous towards the incidental delays that I had in the past couple of order sets.

DC-227 Winter 1913 Deadline Announcement (dc227) TheWhiteWolf Dec 24, 09:54 pm |
Folks,
I concur that these builds should be done quickly and without prior negotiations.

Thank you Mr Wolf,
I think most players will be satisfied with this if more than half have already sent in their builds. Merry X-mas to all of you!

DC-227 Winter 1913 Deadline Announcement (dc227) BabakTalebi Dec 25, 01:40 am |
Hello all -
my apologies for not responding any sooner - the holidays have made life in the Talebi household far more complicated and hectic than its usual frenzied pace...(question to self: does one person count as a household?).

DC-227 Winter 1913 Deadline Announcement (dc227) FlapJack Dec 26, 11:41 am |
hi all,
a few players in this game start have written me but since since the GM has asked (and the variant rules plainly state) that we should not engage in any diploamacy until AFTER the 1913 winter builds are publshed therefore i will not read any notes sent to me or write my own letter of introduction after winter 1913 builds are published. i would ask that this not prejudice you against me any way nor preclude any possible alliances with me or help form any against me...
wolfie, can we have a deadline after the builds at least as long as this one once we can talk? thanks...

DC-227 Winter 1913 Deadline Announcement (dc227) TheWhiteWolf Dec 26, 07:31 pm |
Folks,
I may as well make a public announcement, instead of mentioning this to each individual player... I am generally a stickler for the rules, but in the case of winter negotiations, I try to mind my own business. I know the rules for the variant specifically state that no negotiations should take place before the winter deadline, and I backed that up in an earlier email. However, I'm not terribly concerned about this.
If you're going to talk to each other, talk all you like. I'm not about to rearrange country assignments or try to find a way to punish players for doing nothing wrong.
Have fun,

So Brian has now over 24 hours to submit moves (even I wont be running moves on Christmas day), however I will be adjudicating first thing i can..(even though it's In my holiday) with or without those moves.
So Brian - you have approximately 26 hours.....

well in light of ww announcement...
i've forgotten to add this: i'm online a lot at my two jobs so i'm on most weekdays for about 12 hours off and on but not so much on the weekends...
on a personal note, i've started playing diplomacy through postal zines back in the 80's...mostly I play wargames in person and via the net (cyberboard mostly but i'd like to learn vassel)...
also, I don't know what firefly is...I think of great Groucho Marx character, Rufus T. Firefly and President of Freedonia in the movie Duck Soup whenever firefly is mentioned...

Hey folks,
I'm gratified to see all the introductions that have already flown around. I just set up this email distro, so please reply to it as soon as you can so I know it works (mods, this includes you, as well.)
My real name is Andrew (though I prefer my stage name in this forum.) I'm 27 and have been playing Diplomacy for just over a decade. I started off playing Machiavelli in my parents' basement (before I even knew it was a Diplomacy variant, or even what Diplomacy was.) I got my PBeM start on Cat23, WAAAY back in the halisp.net days. I can't say I know what a solo feels like, but I've shared in a couple really impressive draws.
Firefly is a major obsession in my life (I've attached proof of my obsession,) so Mark has already lost points for his disinterest. Oh yeah, that's me in the first, just so you guys can put a face to all your complaints.
Anyway, I'm in the US Navy, currently "deployed" to Augusta, GA. My home station is in San Antonio, TX - I expect to return there sometime between mid-February and late May (thanks for the indecision, Navy.) I'm a supervisor, so I really don't have a job. I was told by my predecessor here that my job description is "cat herder," and I can see now what he meant.
I'm married (to a fellow DC player/GM,) and we have two daughters, 4 and 1. In addition to the family load, I work long hours on a strange schedule, so if adjudications aren't prompt, try to be a little understanding.
On to the really important stuff: Country Assignments!

I've attached (in addition to proof of my geekdom) a zip file of the Sudden RP variant files. If you use RealPolitik, here's what you need to do:
Unzip the file
Move the unzipped folder to the RealPolitik Variant Files folder (usually found on your C drive under Program Files)
Restart RealPolitik (if you've got it open)
Sudden should show up somewhere near the bottom of your Variants list
If, conversely, you choose not to use RP, I'll be sending out a GIF every turn, as mentioned already. All the variant details can be found in the "Info" window of the game, or on the DC's DipWiki. If anyone has further questions, I'll do my best to answer them.
I'm going to bed now, in preparation for a very long work day. I'll try to get my house rules out to you guys within the next few days.
Welcome to the mayhem!

DC 212 New players - Verticallychallangedcutie (Dec 23, 2008, 9:59 pm) |
Folks,
Both David and Jon have asked to be replaced. I have had two new players sign up for the game. Don't worry neither one is my husband. I have sent them both welcome letters and am waiting for them to confirm they still want to play. As soon as I receive those I will send out a letter with their email addresses and the new deadline ( which won't be until after the new year ). I am truly sorry for all of the drama that has occurred and I had no idea that either player felt that way. I did know that Jimmy was unhappy with the scheduling and I had thought we had worked that out. Jimmy I am sorry you felt slighted. Neither Jon nor David said anything to me whatsoever about being happy. When David asked about the NMR's I thought I had answered his questions as he never wrote me back. But enough of the drama let's get this game rolling again. I am hoping to hear from the players hopefully by tomorrow so you guys can start your diplomacy!!! Merry Christmas guys! Think of me tomorrow and Thursday as you celebrate with your families! We won't be celebrating until Friday morning. Andy ( my husband ) has to work 12 hour shifts tomorrow and Christmas Day. We've told our girls that Christmas eve is thursday so Andy can be home for them to open presents. Once again Merry Christmas!!!!

DC 227 GM Intro / Country Assignments - TheWhiteWolf (Dec 23, 2008, 9:57 pm) |
Hey folks,
I'm gratified to see all the introductions that have already flown around.
Austria: Jack McHugh <jwmchughjr(at)gmail.com>
England: Nick Cherrier <zeclient(at)hotmail.com>
France: Andrew Ott <drew3739o(at)yahoo.com>
Germany: Michael Stroz <mistro914(at)gmail.com>
Italy: Mark Utterbach <mdemagogue(at)gmail.com>
Russia: Babak Talebi <babaktalebi(at)gmail.com>
Turkey: Steve Caponigri <scaponig(at)yahoo.com>
Welcome to the mayhem!

well in light of ww announcement...
i've forgotten to add this: i'm online a lot at my two jobs so i'm on most weekdays for about 12 hours off and on but not so much on the weekends...
on a personal note, i've started playing diplomacy through postal zines back in the 80's...mostly I play wargames in person and via the net (cyberboard mostly but i'd like to learn vassel)...
also, I don't know what firefly is...I think of great Groucho Marx character, Rufus T. Firefly and President of Freedonia in the movie Duck Soup whenever firefly is mentioned...

DC-184 Fall 1909 Retreat Adjudication (dc184) MDemagogue Dec 24, 08:26 pm |
First and foremost, thanks everyone. This was my first game that I had taken over for a player, and unfortunately, there wasn't much that I could do about the position he had left England in. Essentially, from the end of year two onwards it was the same series of moves, and I daresay I probably didn't pay as much attention to this game as I would have if I had been in more of a position to dictate events on the board. As it were though, I think my two pieces were able to do quite a bit of dictating in the west though. Lastly, thanks for GMing and being maganimous towards the incidental delays that I had in the past couple of order sets.

DC-184 Fall 1909 Retreat Adjudication (dc184) camorse22 Dec 24, 09:23 pm |
Mark -
Thank you very much for stepping in.
Sincerely,
Chris

Request for Trout; Could you make an updated map? If not, I'll upload one when I get back home (25th december)
Schedule: A nice break for the holidays now. I'm not certain which date we should go by, but let's put December 30th, 20:00:00 GMT up for next spring orders. If this does not work for any one player involved, then I'll postpone the game a bit longer. Let me know.
Cheers!
