First deadline, for Spring 1901, is set to Monday, Dec 1 at 23:00 GMT (my default deadline time). I will send out the adjudication the same day.
Since that usually has few surprises I'd like to schedule Fall 1901 to Thursday, Dec 4 at 23:00 GMT.
Winter 1901 will then follow on Saturday Dec 6 at 23:00 GMT.
Unless I receive any objections, I will assume everyone agrees with these deadlines for 1901.
Spring 1902 I will set to Tuesday again, Dec 9 at 23:00 GMT and from then onwards there will be only one major season (Fall, Spring) each week.
Retreats I usually expect within 24 hrs after adjudication.
When I receive orders I consider them Final unless it is clearly stated in the subject that these are Prelims. With that I may adjudicate before the deadline if I have all Final orders in. Usually I will send a confirmation of your order within 24 hrs. If you haven't received my confirmation, assume the order wasn't received and resend.

As you will see I always include in my adjudication a GIF file of the map and a DPY file for those of you that like to use RealPolitik.
Right after I have sent out my adjudication to all of you I will also aim to update the DC website.

I'd encourage you to use role-play in your messages to other players and would welcome white and grey press.
Grey press of course should always be posted through me.
When role-playing always make it clear that it is your character talking (by signing with your character name), and not you as a player.

Contact me if you have any questions.

And with that, my dear rulers, you may start talking to the other rulers, negotiate your ticket to a ever-expanding empire, inspire and conspire the demise of others.
Good luck.
Frank

dc208 Spring 1905 - coebq   (Dec 02, 2008, 2:07 am)
Insurrection is an art, and like all arts has its own laws. or so sayeth a famous Russian revolutionary...

Speaking of art, did you know that the Japanese Puzzle box is a merging of two Art-Forms? The art of creating a box with sliding panels that can only be opened if you know the exact sequence of moves. The second art is that of wood marquetry or 'Zaiku' where different woods in their natural color are carefully cut and glued together making beautiful patterns. They are actually very cool.

And frankly, this art imitates our life (or this particular Diplomacy life anyway) as while the colors are different across the board; the pattern is distinct as East and West now squarly face each other down over the. Or is it only a sliding, panel we are looking at, one which only leads us down a false path?

In other news, an English army is destroyed as it tries unsuccessfully to move into the Kingdom of Bohemia. It found the door shut and then had no where to turn. On a lighter note, the chaos known as Munich finally sees a savior in the French army which arrived there this season. The question remains, however: Will the French, unlike the English, be able to hold onto it, bringing some semblance of order to this city ravaged by anarchy? Mankind across the globe awaits the answer...

We have no retreats so we move into the Fall turn. Since I have travel at the end of the week, I will breal my own rule and ask that you get those orders into me on Saturday, 6 Dec. at 23:59 hours. If something thinks they cannot do it over the weekend, please send them in early. I hate to wait until Monday for only four players.

Here are the details. Please let me know if you see a mistake.

Good luck and best regards.

Bruce

Make sure you gulp down lots of water cuz things are about to get bumpy... =)

As the last English unit disbands to tend farm, we see the Germans in Ruhr and the Turkish in Albania follow suit. Meanwhile, Paris, Venice, Moscow and Warsaw raid the high schools and turn out the raw recruit regiments. In counterpoint, fleets are build in Brest and in St. Petes north. All signs point to choppy waves ahead.

Deadline for Spring 1906 is going to be set for Monday, December 8th (11:59 PM GMT). Cheers everyone!

DC222 - Spring 01 Missteps... - former.trout   (Dec 01, 2008, 10:46 pm)
Heya folks,

We had a couple missteps this afternoon as orders came in as I was driving back up to work and offline. Normally I would have requested clarification when they came in. In any event, there are two sets of orders that I've decided to be a nice GM for and ask the players in question what they actually meant. (You are allowed to bask in my mercy. Yes. Bask.) =P

What this means is that the adjudication will be delayed a few measly hours. I DO have sets of orders in from everyone and WILL adjudicate with what I have received by 14:59 GMT tomorrow. (That's 8 AM MST time.)

Thanks for understanding guys. We definitely want the game to start off on the right foot for everyone and not let a little unfamiliarity with the board disqualify some of us out of the gate... Least, thats the "sporting" thing to do. *grin*

Cheers!

DC191 Study In Baltic - Spring 1911 - The Solitary... - former.trout   (Dec 01, 2008, 10:22 pm)
Keep on banging your head against the wall ... And eventually you DO make a dent. (Although whether the dent is in the wall or in your forehead is the question...)

In this instance, Finland puts a pretty solid dent in Poland's forehead. With an audacious convoy, the Finnish reserve regiment gets some front-line experience in Konigsberg - driving the Poles from their bunks in surprise. Danzig was the only safe harbour for the Polish fleet, so I took the liberty. (Lee, if OTB is preferred then please just let me know.)

If the Finnish manage to hold their ground through the Fall turn, our DIAS clock resets back to zero. Which seems to be all right as the latest draw proposal, the 3-way, again goes down in defeat...

Deadline for Fall 1911 orders will be set for Monday, December 8th (11:59 PM GMT). No draw proposals were submitted this turn, but I did have a request to examine speedier deadlines. Since its Christmas, I figure why not - if you guys agree. Let me know if you want me to switch to deadlines of three or four days instead of the week-long ones we have right now. Also, if I receive all four sets of orders marked 'FINAL', then I will adjudicate early.

Cheers everyone!

Just a follow up -
The family and I wound up staying in northern Wisconsin due
to snow
storms so we will all be leaving later today and heading
home. I have all
the orders and have loaded them into Realpolitik but since
not all of them
are marked final I cannot process and post the results.

Depending on the ride home and how long it takes I may not
get them out
tonight. If not, they will go out Tuesday.

However, if I do get final indications before 11AM CST I
may be able to get
them out today.

Austria EGS - cluffy123   (Dec 01, 2008, 2:38 pm)
This was an interesting game for me, my first seismic game, and only
my 4th ever dip game in total.

I began somewhat frightful as Austria struggles to survive at the best
of times, and being able to be torn into from even more possible
angles didn't seem promising - nevertheless I made an alliance with
Russia to take down Turkey, on the basis that he would be easy to
breach given 2 seismics each turn. Italy repeatedly told me he was not
enough of a fool to attack me straight away, such that I was
suspicious of him doing so, the number of times he mentioned it.

Things started off well, if slowly, and a failure of communication
cost me a vital centre for 1901, which at the time I thought could
kill me, and it seems did. Italy's strike meant I had to cancel plans
on Turkey, but at least I was safe in the knowledge that Russia would
continue the struggle, when much to my despair and surprise he stabbed
me also. Things took a turn for the worst at this point as I was
assailed from all sides. I took the strategy of just not losing for as
long as possible, as it was the only option left open to me. Turkey
and I co-operated for a while but it was only a question of who would
stab first, and seeing as I was totally unable to stab, it was Turkey.

Being attacked by my 3 neighbours seemed to make them all think that
they better fight each other over who would get my few remaining
centres, and a Cold War between Russia and Turkey was developing as
their alliance grew in power. It was only a matter of time before one
grew too strong for the other to bear, and France would join with one
of them. France was also making inroads down South and having, in one
of my previous games been stabbed by a Turkey helping me against
France, I was suspicious of France's intentions as he offered to help
me take Italy, in a very similar situation. I was forced to accept
however, and the entire nation of Austria migrated to Naples where
they help out besieged. I was forced to help France, since he could at
any moment eliminate me, but I tried to be as unhelpful as possible
while appearing not to be trying to be unhelpful (if that makes
sense). So sorry Rolf for all those times I was so careless in
interpreting your messages - I knew there was little more
misunderstanding I could do, when you were sending me direct orders in
Bold and extra large type so I couldn't misread them! France seemed
destined to mop up what remained from the inevitable Russo-Turkish
conflict, but I must say he did so very well indeed - so
congratulations Rolf on a game well played - you thoroughly deserve
it.

DC 220 A New Czar Takes the Throne - Verticallychallangedcutie   (Dec 01, 2008, 12:03 pm)
Folks
A new Czar has taken the throne in Russia. Please welcome the new head of country. He takes the throne at the most opportune time as his country is about to expand. So without further ado...our new Czar is Mike Cassel ( mc3358a(at)student.american.edu ).
Okay so since Mike joined right before the Winter season this is what we will do. Go ahead and submit builds by Wed Dec 3rd at 7pm EST ( 11pm GMT ) and then we will set a slightly longer deadline for Spring 1902 so the new Czar can get acquainted with all the ruling powers. I've attached the map and dpy file for Mike and anyone who might want another look.

DC182: England EGS - offdisc   (Dec 01, 2008, 10:34 am)
This EGS will be short and sweet -- much like my presence in this game.

I began 1901 by contacting most everyone and opening discussions.
Russia was immediately responsive and we egan to coordinate our
strategies. France finally responded a day or two before the
deadlines. I had already submitted my moves, but fully divulged my
moves and intentions to Rolf. My idea was to from an EFR alliance and
form a force to push south through the entire board.
Well, that didn't go as planned. Whether or not a previous (current)
game I was also playing against Rolf had anything to do with the
situation, as soon as I moved to ECH, France wanted nothing more to do
with me. This came as a bit of a shock because we had discussed my
opening to ECH and further move to Bel. Nonetheless, I believed
France was onboard with an alliance, and got hit hard in 1901 and even
harder in 1902.

I regrouped with Italy, but France's 3 builds scared everyone away.
Russia and I continued talking and strategizing, but I lost control of
my home bases fairly quickly and was done for by 1906. By then, it
was also fairly clear that the main powerhouse was Turkey and it was
not surprising to see him come out on top.

Nicely played everyone! I look forward to seeing you all on the boards soon.

DC224 - Slaugher At Story-Time - Map Notes, Odds a... - former.trout   (Dec 01, 2008, 9:40 am)
Heya all.

Some notes about the map.

1. Some players have asked for a clearer version of it. Here is the best I can do - please let me know if this doesn't suffice and I'll run it up the wire.

2. As noted in the game-launch announcement, we will NOT be using the special abilities or FOG rules.

3. Connections to Underworld: There are FIVE spots where the aboveground map connects to the lower Underworld. Only one unit can exist in these five spaces at a time, and that unit can move, attack or support to any connecting space both above-ground or below-ground. The five spaces are:
- Mount Nimro (Center of the Board)
- Cave of Ordeals (NW)
- Dragons Teeth Mts (NE)
- Hoarluk (SW)
- Nowwhat (SE)

4. Builds: Standard builds will be used. (ie builds only allowed in your home centers) However - there are nine neutral centers that can be built on. If captured, these nine "eternal build" centers will act as if they were one of your home centers. The nine Eternal Build centers are:
- Telmar (NW)
- Spiral Castle (NE)
- Dargaard Keep (W)
- Julianthes (Central / Island)
- Myth Drannor (Central / Island)
- Never Never Land (E)
- Whoville (SW)
- Krikkit (SE)
- Spirit Pond (Underworld)

5. Lighthouse and Towers: The lighthouses and towers will still show up on the map but they are only decoration. These are used for the FOG rules which we will not be employing.

6. Rivers: The blue lines on the map are rivers which are navigable by fleets. Basically - each province that borders a river acts as a canal or coastal province. (i.e. Kiel or Constantinople on the standard map.)

7. The map wraps around east to west, but not north to south. (i.e. the Poles do not connect).

I think that covers all the questions I've been asked. If I've missed anything, or if something is unclear, then please just let me know. Spring 01 orders are due on Tuesday, December 9th (11:59 PM GMT).

Cheers!

DC224 Game Launch - The Slaughter At Story-Time - former.trout   (Dec 01, 2008, 9:27 am)
They say that magic and the faerie creatures still exist in the world... But maybe not for long. Sit down my friends and listen to a tale of warfare and horror. Listen to The Slaughter At Story-Time...

Yup! It's time for the good citizens of The Haven to get their war-faces on. I'm VERY happy to announce the game-launch and full player roster of DC-224 - The Haven Map Playtest. This one definitely looks as though it will be one for the books.

A couple notes here before the player roster:

- My house rules are going under a little revision and I will send them out to everyone later on this week once this is complete.

- For those of you who have not already, I'd humbly suggest downloading the Realworld program and Haven variant files from the download section of the Diplomaticcorp site. (Realworld is just like Realpolitik - only bigger and better.)

- This is a playtest of the map to determine functionality and to iron out any wrinkles. All player observations along those lines are welcome either during the game or in their EOG statements at the conclusion.

- The special FOG rules and Special Abilities noted in the Dipwiki description of the variant will NOT be used in this game

I'll send out a second email concerning map specifics and some questions that have come up from you guys. We'll set the first deadline for Spring 01 for just over a weeks time. Please have orders in to me by Tuesday, December 9th (11:59 PM GMT).

Cheers everyone! Have fun!

DC 218 SP01 SHIFT LEFT FA 01 orders due 12/01/08 @... - packrat   (Dec 01, 2008, 7:14 am)
Just a follow up -
The family and I wound up staying in northern Wisconsin due to snow
storms so we will all be leaving later today and heading home. I have all
the orders and have loaded them into Realpolitik but since not all of them
are marked final I cannot process and post the results.

Depending on the ride home and how long it takes I may not get them out
tonight. If not, they will go out Tuesday.

However, if I do get final indications before 11AM CST I may be able to get
them out today.

Seismic - France EGS (late and lengthy) - waschlappen   (Dec 01, 2008, 3:56 am)
Here is my EGS - late and lengthy, sorry , I didn't have the time to write something short. Wink

EGS
In the opening I was undecided whether to go with <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comSurprisedffice:smarttags" />England or Germany. England made the decision for me by moving into the channel in spring01. He seemed to target Nor, Bel and Bre for f01. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comSurprisedfficeSurprisedffice" />

I played the mad man and announced to throw all I had against England in f01 and even support Germany into Belgium. As a result, I mourned, F and UK would end up with 1 build each..and Germany with 3.
But in talks with Germany, he unexpectedly was willing to support me into Belgium to balance builds at 2 each. I decided to leave Brest at risk and move into Bel, Spa and Por. Lucky strike ! My threats had obviously warded England off as he did not take Bre and bounced Germany in Hol – so it ended with 3 builds for France and 1 for Germany and England each.

Germany turned out to be a really reliable partner in the following turns, so it was not too difficult to advance against England. England then tried and managed to get Russia involved against Germany in 1902, but was loosing ground out West and in 1903 had to decide whether to defend his home SC’s or concentrate on bringing down Germany. He opted for the latter and lost Lon and Liv in fall03.

In parallel I had to make up my mind in the Mediterranean. Austria was rapidly loosing ground against Italy and Turkey. So I decided for a call into Italy to alleviate Austrias situation.

Then Russia and Turkey teamed up. I called all the others to stop the Juggernaut. Italy said it would agree but insisted on taking out Austria first. England made clear it had been in an alliance with Russia from the beginning and was not willing to change sides. So I had to continue against England, Russia and Italy. I knew that - as it was - F-G-A could never win against R-T-GB-I. My only hope was that Turkey would stab Russia.

I managed to maintain my Northern border against England and together with Austria was able to take out Italy in 1905. But in 1906 things were starting to look dreary for me when Germany finally collapsed, Turkey took most of Italy from Austria, Russia pushed into Burgundy and England grabbed Belgium.

But then….there it was, “Le miracle de la maison du Brandenbourg” : Turkey overestimated his position and stabbed Russia - Hallelujah ! To my surprise England joined in.

Turkey indicated he wanted to work with me, but broke an agreement which I had made clear would decide about war or peace. So it was clear he felt strong enough to openly run for the solo.

I teamed up with Russia and with his help was easily able to collect what was left of England. Russia threw all he had against Turkey and luckily managed to hold him off (which paved the way for my solo).

In the Med, Austria had made a run into Italy when Turkey flooded over Austrian home turf. With my help he could dig himself in with his last unit at Naples. Potentially this gave me a second seismic against Turkey - but Austria proofed unreliable (NMR, breach of promises, etc.) in the beginning. I considered eliminating Austria, but when after a couple of turns I was able to convince him to fully cooperate, his seismic was important to gain ground in what seismics had made of former Italy.
Italy actually seemed to be a battleground of minor importance as progress was slow and only 2 SC, Ven and Rome, to be won. The Balkan was solidly shut off behind a sea and a mighty Turkish fleet. …but in the end it was there that my solo was won.

When Russia started to advance against Turkey, the Sultan, sensing he was loosing this game, tried to talk me into stabbing Russia. Counting what I could take in a stab, it was clear to me, that I couldn’t win against a then probably R-T coalition and decided to wait. Time was on my side, I felt. I was not to repeat Turkeys fatal error to stab to early.

Up North I had to stand behind the Russian lines without any chance to participate in the gains – which I did for several turns. When it was clear that Russia would take two SC from Turkey next turn but could not build, I managed to talk him into “lending” me Holland. Standing at 12 SC, unexpectedly I also managed to take Venice. 14 SC. I counted what was in reach : Nap, Kiel, Den and Swe. 14+4 SC…..

I thought everybody would see what I saw - my chance to solo - and expected the worst, feared they all would immediately turn against me. I expected coordinated action of Turkey and Austria in the Western Med to move their fleets to a common target, a West shift of Russias Central European armies and a bounce with Russia in Sweden. Sweden was the only weak point in my plan. All the other operations I could guarantee success. But if Russia ordered "A St.Pet-Swe " I would be in serious trouble. There were no further SC’s easy to collect for me and I wasn’t sure I could win an extended battle against Russia and Turkey.
But now or never ….and nothing happened. Russia and Austria submitted moves against Turkey and everything went smoothly for my solo.

Thanks for playing to everybody ! I'm looking forward to meet again in some other game.

Rolf of France

Thanks to all for a well-played game which I thoroughly enjoyed. Hats off to Austria for lasting as long as he did - the extra seismic did indeed prove to be my undoing, as was my too-early alienation of France in the Med/Italy. 3 sesmics against 1 is just too much - 2 against 1 probably insurmountable as well.

I have to say I like the variant a lot, especially as it allowed for my Black Sea fleet to become incredibly powerful and helped me break out early on.

Cheers, and see you all next time.

Nathan

Subject: Seismic Solo!

"Resistance is useless!" Said better than a Vogon, (and with better
effect) the opposition stands aside in reverence as France coasts to an
18 SC Solo Seismic Victory.

Congrats to Rolf for the win, which in Seismic is supposed to be harder
to get than in a standard game! Final standings are online,
www.diplomaticcorp.com?game_id=dc182.

This has got to be one of my favorite variants. Oddly enough, the first
Seismic (dc99) ended in a solo as well. There's another in play
already, dc211 so check that out if you're interested to see how their
map is shaping up. (www.diplomaticcorp.com?game_id=dc211)

Since France captures the 18, final seismic orders are not played.

That's it! Send EGS (End-Game-Statements) to the group, share your
perspectives on the game.
