Germany convoys across the Baltic and England across the North Sea,
Turkey rushes into Sev on the heels of a departing English army
and...not much else; a rather uneventful turn compared to some of the
ones preceding it. The three lined up fleets of different colors in the
western Med look pretty though...
No retreats, so we progress directly to Fall 1907. Thanks to this turn
coming in on a Monday, we get two movement turns in one week! Deadline

"Well, why not? Cheating is hardly out of place in a game which makes a cardinal virtue of deception."  according to the 1979 2nd edition Gamer's Guide to Diplomacy.
Then that was the board game and we're playing online without any face-to-face contact. Does it make a lot of difference? Yes, I think it does.
So it should not surprise anyone that the rules for the online game have been adjusted to its medium. Remember that the only way we know the other players is through this game. Our tactics determine how we're perceived. And I think that this is where there is a danger in cheating in online Diplomacy: others may perceive a 'cheater' in the game as a cheater in real life. That would definitely bar the cheater from ever being able to agree on a pact with the others. Of course, players should not expect someone to act in a similar way across all games. But let's confess: don't we all anticipate this in a way?
So I wholeheartedly agree with the conclusion at the end of the 2nd edition's chapter on Cheating: "Cheating is of course no substitute for thorough negotiations and sound strategy and tactics. It is a technique that will help on a rare occasion and should be used with great restraint."[Reply] |

Heya folks,
Attached is the .dpw file and map from the Fall 1871 turn. There was a slight error in the results I emailed last night as the US ordered an illegal move for Bogota. Net result is that instead of bouncing, the US army moves out of BRC and that center remains in Brazilian hands.
I auto-retreated Russia to Walachia and one of Austria's armies to Berlin - disbanding the other army. Rob and Mike, if either of these goes against your wishes please just let me know and I will correct it. If not though, we'll move into Winter 1871 with adjustments due Wednesday, Apr 16th (11:59 PM GMT).
Thanks again so much for the patience last weekend folks. That won't happen again - at least not for another ten years or so. =P

My take I think is a quite common one; The aim to tell the truth as long as possible, but still having the overall goal to winning each board I sit down to play on. Then, of course, you would have to define winning, which does wary from player to player.
On a different side on the same matter, by playing in the same group and with roughly the same people, you develop a relation to thoose players AND a reputation as well. For example, I will often prefer to work with someone I know to be reliable rather than one who is prone to beeing erratic/making nmr's and so forth. This provides a further challenge, due to the fact that reliable players are often that much better at the game itself - which can lead to some very interesting in-game discussions.[Reply] |

Once again, lots of action all around the board. This season, many of the attacks succeed.
In the north, England finally succeeds in taking Holland from Germany, while Russia maintains control over the German coastal centers. France consolidates control of the waters west of Great Britain, but sees its advance unit in Silesia pushed out by Tsarist forces from Warsaw.
In the south, Russia reoccupies Budapest and Italy does the same in Serbia. Turkey sets adrift the Italian fleet in Greece, and Russia asserts control of Vienna.
Lots of units are dislodged:
The English F Irish Sea may retreat to Wales or OTB.
The French A Silesia may retreat to Bohemia, Galicia, or OTB.
The German F Holland has no valid retreats and is destroyed.
The Italian A Budapest may retreat to Trieste or OTB.
The Italian F Greece has no valid retreats and is destroyed.
As usual, both the autumn retreats and winter adjustment deadline will be at the same time, Tuesday 4/15 at 3pm Central (US). The end appears to be near for both Italy and Russia, as foreign occupiers move in to their remaining centers. Meanwhile, Germany seems to be seeking a new home, as Germany moves toward both English and French centers while Austria rolls into Munich. And as the French fleet takes hold of Naples, the lone Austrian fleet sails into Tunis.
The only dislodged unit is the Russian army in Moscow, which has only one valid retreat to Livonia. In order to keep the game moving, I will order that retreat.
Fall 1904 orders will be due Thursday 4/17 at 3pm Pacific.
