Once Within: Roster - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
What, no one wants to have the Luck O' The Irish? Well, then I'll happily take the Leperchauns! Yes, that's spelled correctly. You touch my pot of gold, and I'll chop your hands off.

Speaking of the Irish, have all the USAers (I won't be crass and say "Americans"Wink signed the Guiness petition? http://www.proposition317.com/index.html

DC152 (wb0817) - Summer 1906 Retreats - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Hey hey,

Unfortunately I could not find a retreat from Italy. Nick, if you have a valid confirmation from me please send it my way and I will adjust the turn. The green army is thus disbanded, and France falls back to Gulf of Lyons.

We roll onwards. Deadline for Fall 1906 orders will be set for Valentines Day - Thursday, February 14th (11:59 PM GMT).

Cheers!

DC116 Vogon's Revenge - Fall 1912 - Sing Me Spanis... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
With pomp and fanfare from the band
Turkey marched through Trieste's land
But this happy merry dance
Effected unseen circumstance
As the Archduke forced now to disband.

---------------------------------------------------------

Bounce, bounce, bounce a-plenty - all over the map once again. Minor movement does take place, however, as England convoys to Belgium and Turkey moves to the Ionian. In addition, Austrian forces are reduced by half due to Turkish occupation of Trieste.

No retreats are required, so of course we move directly into Winter 1912 adjustments. Austria disbands 1 while both Turkey and Russia gain 1 build. Deadline for Winter orders will be set for Valentine's Day - Thursday February 14th (11:59 PM GMT).

Please let me know if you spot any errors. Cheers!

----------------------------

All movement on the board is from the Med in Spring 1906, as the north remains locked in the titanic English - Russian struggle. Italy feels the wrath of the French navy in Rome and Turkey moves for position in the Eastern Med.

No retreats required other than the disband suffered by the unfortunate Roman navy. We'll set the next deadline for a little under a weeks time, with orders due on Monday February 18th (11:59 PM GMT).

Cheers everyone! Please just let me know if you spot an error.

Once Within: Maps out! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Greetings all,
By now you’ve each received a starting map. You see it’s not like most maps you get, it’s hand edited to blank out that which you cannot see…

You’ll get a new map each spring and fall, with only “move” updates for retreats and/or builds. Your map is your diplomatic tool to do with as you please! Trading maps is fair game, as is altering them. Since everyone asks, I use Paint Shop Pro 5 to do my editing.

Newbies: There are so many new to the FOW variant this time! Some things to consider…

Remember that once your map gets out there, then it’s out there and it can get passed around freely by others! As well, anyone can fake anything they want. Doctoring maps is perfectly legal.

************************************

Some notes about orders, in particular the “Hold” order:

Each adjudication, you’ll be told the results of your orders like normal. However you’ll also learn the orders of any unit that affects any unit of yours. You’ll also learn a lot more if you HOLD. If you hold, you’ll learn every order that affected every space adjacent to you. So consider the Hold order like an “Observe” order. The vets of this game will know that getting a centrally positioned unit and holding with it tends to learn a lot of information.

************************************

Lay of the land:

The Haven is laid out in a few continents that are all connected in unique ways. In the middle of the map are some lucrative neutral lands.

In general, the players are spread out around the edges. Somewhat. Wink

The world wraps around from east to west. So there are no safe corners. Some of you already see points where the world wraps.

Rivers can be traveled by fleet. If you see a river (many of you already do) then you can move a fleet along it. One space at a time of course, just like normal movement. The river just means that fleets can move along the river spaces, much like Kiel in the standard game.

************************************

Other Stuff:

I’m still refining some of the wording on the abilities / powers, so they’ll be out later this week.

Feel free to cc me on any negotiations! Early stuff in particular, I’m interested to know how players go about selecting their opening moves since that’s what I use to build future maps!

Prelims are highly recommended. Especially with this large of a map, it’s good when I have orders in on time since I typically set aside an evening to prep all the maps. When I get to the turn, I do enforce NMR’s – anyone who’s played in one of my games and missed a deadline probly knows this already.

First deadline: Friday Feb 22, 2pm Pacific

Questions? Ask!
Enjoy,
-mike

Once Within: Lighthouses & Watch towers - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Some of you have asked what the um… “Oil Refinery looking” thing is on your map… (are my graphics that bad?)

These are either a lighthouse or a watchtower! (hopefully you can tell which it is – tho they are functionally equivalent, I just put watchtowers if inland, or lighthouses if coastal). It watches over the two spaces next to it, and keeps them lit up on every map you receive. This makes it harder to sneak up on these key cities. If it’s unclear, feel free to ask. This is a new feature for FOW IV, after having seen some brutal surprise stabs in games past.

If your lighthouse or watchtower is captured, it does NOT operate for enemy occupiers but will stop working for you. If you can liberate the city, it would resume operation.

Enjoy,
-mike

One of our players was kind enough to point out that I managed to miss Germany's adjustments off the list:

Austria Supp 10 Unit 9 Build 1
England Supp 8 Unit 6 Build 2
France Supp 3 Unit 4 Remove1
Germany Supp 1 Unit 2 Remove 1
Italy Supp 9 Unit 7 Build 2
Russia Supp 2 Unit 2 /
Turkey Supp 1 Unit 1 /

Sorry about that. 3pm Thurs or builds will be waived and disbands by default. Still no word from Russia

DC101 France EOG - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
It seems like it has been a while since I had any actual force in the game but I'll try to remember how it progressed. I started off working with Germany which looked great until he made no builds in the first year. Then I switched to working with England because it seemed unavoidable to attack Germany. I tried to expand slowly and from a very early point tried to point out to everyone how large Mike was getting. This did not seem to do anything but get me attacked. At some point I decided i would do whatever i could to stop Mike from getting the solo. The players around me used the fact that I was attempting to hold Turkey back to attack me from behind and eventually I lost it all. I take slight offense from the new Germany that I gave him no help. The very first thing I did when he joined the game was offer him a complete truce and stop attacking him. Something which seemed valuable at a time when he was being attacked by every player around him.... How quickly they forget. I did not use my units in conjuntion with his much because I was desperately trying to hold back Turkey... But anyway my vague attempts at diplomacy, I couldn't seem to establish any long term relationships in the game were not enough to halt Mike. I enjoyed playing with everyone. Good game Mike, you ran away with it right from the start.

DC103 - Missing Turkish Orders - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Heya folks,

Unfortunately, I'm still missing some Turkish orders for Fall 1914. We'll extend until 11:59 PM GMT this evening (Wed Feb 13th) in the hopes that Joe can get something to me. While my games are strictly non-NMR, I believe that Felixs games allow for them. As such, if no Turkish orders are forthcoming, I will assign an NMR and we will carry on.

All previously submitted orders are now locked in place. Cheers guys!

Thanks for the patience everyone,

DC103 - Summer 1914 - The Hanging Garden - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Gentlemen and not-so-gentlemen,

We have a French solo proposal on the table. I'll set the deadline for your yay or nay votes with the Winter adjustments since the Fall deadline might be a little quick here. However, if I have all five votes in hand by this evening I will announce the result.

Regards,

Trout

Ok guys I guess I'll propose a solo for the spring, and vote for it. I think I voted it down last time to get revenge on Turkey, but I'm sure we all have better things to do. We'll move on to fight another day.

So Trout pls propose the Italian solo, and we'll be done with this one.

Oops..

heh heh.. My bad.

That would be an Italian solo proposed, not a French solo proposed. What was I thinking? =)

Sorry about the confusion. Please have your yay or nay votes for an Italian solo to me by the soon-to-be-announced Winter deadline. Lack of a vote will count as a no.

Cheers,
