DC112 spring 1907 results! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Spring 1907 arrives, with Italy facing assaults on three sides, while peace has broken out around Scandinavia. The brave Italian forces manage to hold on to Venice and Trieste, but are driven out of Serbia. And how long will the northern guns remain silent?

There is one retreat due. The Italian A Serbia may retreat to Greece, Albania, or OTB. Brian, since I'm a little late posting the adjudication, I'll set your summer 1907 retreat deadline for this Friday 11/30 at 3pm Central (US). I'll adjudicate as soon as I receive the retreat and get us back on track.

Cory

.ExternalClass .EC_hmmessage P {padding:0px;} .ExternalClass EC_body.hmmessage {font-size:10pt;font-family:Tahoma;} So, after deliberation, we will carry on.

A bit of housekeeping: I was incorrect below where I said that Peter could
retreat to NTH. He could not - that was where Bel was attacked from. That said, he has two options still - disband [by saying no retreat ordered] which would allow him to rebuild the unit in a home center or to retreat to Pic. I will take his retreat order first so if it affects your builds then please let me know. The Russian removal will be named when I get build orders but they will have one unit removed [following standard rules for a country in anarchy].

The following are build orders due:

Germany - one or two depending on his choice for retreat [Peter, I will accept a change in your previous submission if you wish given all that has happened]

Turkey - two builds

England - two builds

Let's shoot for this:

Build deadline - Thursday November 29th 5pm CST
Next turn deadline - Thursday December 6th 5pm CST

I will send out results from the retreat/builds either Thursday night [or sooner if I receive FINAL orders for retreat/builds].

Thanks for staying strong to Bob, Eric, Peter and Nick.

Brace yourselves for a fun finale.

Autumn 1904 Adjustments:
A: Bul, Tri, Vie, Gre = 4; No change.
E: Bel, Bre, +StP, War, +Por, Nwy, Lon, Edi, Lpl = 9; Gains 2.
F: Spa = 1; No change.
G: +Ven, Hol, Den, Par, Mun, Mar, Ber, Kie = 8; Gains 1.
I: Rom -Ven, -Tun, -Nap = 1; Loses 3.
R: Mos, Rum, Swe, Sev, -StP = 4; Loses 1.
T: Bud, Ser, +Tun, +Nap, Con, Ank, Smy = 7; Gains 2.

Peter - I need a retreat for F Bel. Note that you have two options - NTH or NRO [which is no retreat ordered which means disband so you can build elsewhere].

Orders for Builds/Removes will be contingent on that retreat. When I receive it, I will publish with a request for builds/removals. I expect to get a quick response from Peter and then will publish new deadlines for builds/removals and the next turn.

Note: I will be sending a map in a separate file - HOWEVER, the map will have the following inconsistencies:

* It will show the F Bel as disbanded....note that it is pending retreat.
* It wil show Russia's removal as A(Lvn). That is actually contingent on his request. I had to show something as removed for the program. Until he gives his remove request consider that as an A in place.

Should get interesting. AGAIN - APOLOGIZE FOR THE DELAY!!!!

dc109 s212 - Death becomes me... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
... seems to be the popular phrase this year as every Roman Admiral sets it as his proverbial ring-tone. Little did they know they were tempting their own fates by repeating what seemed like such a humorous slang... for after years of fighting back the invaders from the lands of the sun, the capitol city has finally fallen to the Egyptians. Poor guys tho after all that work, only Gaul will reap the rewards as the Carthaginian capitol is captured by Sir Rupertorix.

Barring some extreme Egyptian good will, we bid ado to the Romans, Jerry pls submit an EGS to me while it's fresh in your mind and I'll hold it till the end. If you want off the distribution, you have to request so otherwise you'll stay on.

We'll move into Fall 1866 and set the deadline for Wednesday, December 5th (11:59 PM GMT)...

DC123 Shade Of The Bonsai - Fall 1575 - Swans - MO... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
From the Iwamisudera Monogatari:

Learning is to a man as leaves and branches are for a tree, and can be said that he should simply not be without it.

The drums of war fall silent as the Shogun rises from the south and quells all opposition. With definity, the Mori eliminate the last Shimazu resistance and surge to 13 supply centers - propelling Lee to a clear solo victory. The Oda and Asakura make a few attempted moves to the south, but the Mori don't give an inch. Meanwhile, the Hojo despite all odds eke out a survival and the Takeda watch - knowing that one day the Mori defenses will slip...

However, that is not to be in this game. Congratulations to Lee for his fine solo victory. My thanks, also, to all players on the board - both surviving and eliminated. This is one of my favorite variants, and it was a true pleasure to watch this one unfold.

So - that wraps up DC-123, Shade Of The Bonsai. End-of-game statements are MORE than welcome. I know Benjamin GREATLY values any input you have into the layout of the board, the positioning of the pieces and and general thoughts you have about the development of the Sengoku variant.

Thanks for the fun game everyone. We'll see you on the next board.. =)

DC123 Shade Of The Bonsai -HOJO EOG - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Like lightning beyond..thunder strikes for the wiser
Hubris waits for none.

First thanks so much to Lord Trout for a well ran game!
One can always expect the best in this business of the best!!

Well, this is one of my least favorite, and most favorite variant.....
yes i love to hate it.....

I started this game not knowing anyone in the group, all new faces to
me and yet there was a sinking suspicion that they may know of me.....
oh well, perhaps thats just my ego....

I allied with the best talker of the group which ended up to be Nathan, aka
Lord Takeda...the hand of Buddha....Nathan ia a great orator, diplomat and
stabber!

I knew from playing this variant that patience is key, a sudden move
will kill you pretty much in one fell swoop, so I let Takeda call the shots....we
finished off Chokosabe pretty quickly and I knew that I was setting myself for
a massive stab....but like every game, timing is paramount, and when Takeda stabbed
me.....brilliantly might I add....I knew that it was about 2 turns too soon....it cemented
Asakura and Oda...two forces that I knew would not relent.

I told Nathan that the stab should come when Bruce and Josh were at war, they were
never at war and when the stab came, I knew the solo for Takeda would be shot to hell,
and it was.... as Mori just picked up the southern pieces as Oda and Askaura went
'postal' on Takeda.

I think more to do with the fact that his stab of me was so
nice that punishment was all the recourse that could have been done.

I know that a mortal would should finish your opponent...but more importantly
you have to offer your next of kin an opportunity to grow...and I don't think
Nathan gave that to the Oda/Asakura clan.

All in all good play, and excellent stab by Nathan.

I'm glad to have survived!

May Buddha's lone hand
Give reverence to the meek.
Divisive, with Grace.

DC123 Shade Of The Bonsai - Fall 1575 - Swans - MO... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
I have a short EOG of my own as an observer. Just notes really...

Since the most recent map revision, I have now seen games played at the 12 and 15 SC count victory conditions, and as it seems this one ended prematurely, that 15 (or perhaps even higher?) is the correct number. The lower SC victory count was created with two reasons in mind, one of which it does not appear to accomplish at all.

The first was to create greater chances of Oda and Asakura victory - those two in the middle that start in a minefield of open SCs would be able to race to an early solo if the outside "triangles" of C/M/S and T/U/H did not intervene.

The second reason was historical accuracy. Oda Nobunaga carved out an area roughly equivalent to 12 SCs when he earned the title of Shogun.

Anywho, I imagine the Takeda are a bit annoyed at the variant design right now, and perhaps rightly so at the 12 SC victory condition. Sengoku is designed to play MUCH faster than a game of Standard, which can last well over a year sometimes. But not this fast.

That said...

In the last four games of Sengoku, I have seen an interesting phenomenon that puzzles me a bit. Players have chosen the difficult path of operating on both the top and bottom of the map (geographical east and west, but for simplicity's sake, top and bottom). Takeda chose to polish off Uesugi in his entirety, and Hojo feels that his stab was premature. I would have stabbed even earlier perhaps, or not at all. But by operating on the top and bottom of the map, Takeda was vulnerable to the O/A coalition that stonewalled him, without placing them in the uncomfortable position of tripping over each other trying to attack him - each had ample Takeda targets on the top coast and the bottom coast.

My point is this, it's easiest to solo in Sengoku by mostly running up a coastline, whichever power you play, rather than trying to split your fleets on both sides of Japan.

As for Mori, his rise to power was astonishing. It seemed that he even misordered or neglected to order some of his units on multiple occasions. Tactic to appear non-threatening? Intentional timing to divert the attention to Takeda as Hojo claims? Maybe - regardless, his strike was extremely effective, and represents the first PBEM Mori solo that I'm aware of. (Mori players have soloed over a paper map in FTF before in earlier revisions).

Oda and Asakura played pretty much textbook - they did very well, but I don't think anyone in their position could have done well enough to deal with the extremely rapid rise of both Takeda and Mori. F1575 is one of the quickest endstates I've ever seen, draw resolutions included.

So we see the feature of Sengoku that annoys some people at work - it is entirely possible to do very well in your area, and have someone solo on the other side of the map just by doing a little bit better, even without coming into contact with each other.

Hope that doesn't turn anyone off to the variant, I enjoyed watching this one immensely, and hope you will play again sometime at whatever SC victory condition, 12 or 15. Congratulations to our new Mori shogun!

B!
