DC344: Seeking French replacement - charlesf   (Oct 15, 2010, 3:00 pm)
Hi guys,

I'm afraid my original French player has NMRed already in the game's
second season. As my house rules stipulate that (after the passing
of a possible grace period) any NMR situations shall lead to the
replacement of the player in question and a corresponding delay of
that season's adjucation deadline, I am now turning to you in
seeking a replacement player.

It's too bad that the past Pr?sident has made a royal mess of the
first season. It's not a happy situation, to be sure. That being
said, I do believe an astute diplomat might well turn around the
situation. The good news here is that as yet France has not lost any
SCs, nor need it do so.

So if you relish a challenge without it being that of player an
inconsequential minnow, why not step in as the engineer of a French
turnaround?

I've attached the present map further below (or check the DC site
for the past adjucation). The fall deadline shall be pushed back
until Wednesday to allow the new player sufficient time to
negotiate. I'll fill the position with whoever steps up first and
sure would be grateful to those willing to do so. As a small
thankyou, any replacement player shall get first choice of a power
in a future game I'll be running.

dc331 needs a new egypt - MattTheLesser   (Sep 21, 2010, 7:53 am)
Middle of the pack position (8 SC) in what is still very much a wide open game. Who can lead the African nation to greatness?

It's a challenging position but by all means competitive. And as a gunboat game it's less of a time commitment than normal. Deadlines 3/1/2 days (moves/retreats/adjustments) but never on weekends. Join up!

Need a replacement Oda and GM for DC 306 - Kenshi777   (Aug 18, 2010, 3:56 pm)
Urgent: due to complications from surgery for the GM. The game is very well advanced, and will likely not take long to resolve (for the GM). I must confess that the Oda position is something of a mercy position at this point however. Players have voiced a desire to continue. Anyone willing to assist would have my sincere gratitude.

I might be interested if you still need a replacement. I've not played this variant before, although I have experience with other variants.

How long are deadlines?

DC279 needs a new Archduke! - charlesf   (Jun 05, 2010, 7:04 am)
Hi guys,

DC279 - a 1648 variant game - needs a new Austrian replacements following the 1659 Fall Moves.

Austria's a 7 SC power currently and may well expand on that total, next to perhaps regaining the Imperial throne. It's a sound position.

For info on the variant, see: http://www.dipwiki.com/index.php?title=1648

For the latest map, check out DC279's game page.

If interested, please let me know. I'd be according you ample time to negotiate and submit your retreat/build.

Hi Everyone,

I'm really glad to be part of this group. I've only played Diplomacy a
couple of times, back in the 1990's, but am really enjoying getting
back involved via this website.

Briefly, what attracts me to the Light Brigade is being part of
helping the community run smoothly. I don't have the time or mental
capacity to do the kind of great work that the site and group
organizers and managers do, but I find it at worst easy and at best
enjoyable to conduct diplomacy and get orders turned in on time, even
in a game with a hopeless situation. The idea that doing that
periodically to help "bail out" a game that is adrift because one or
more players have quit is really pretty exciting to me. It seems to
play a really valuable role while not requiring much from me, and in
the process helping out others. That's pretty sweet.

Not that any of you wanted to hear such detail about one person's
perspective on the good work you are all doing, but that is why I for
one have joined and look forward to helping often in the months ahead.

As a newcomer to Diplomacy I am hardly mentor material but do think
any availability our senior and experienced members could contribute
to this would be a boon to the community.

Best,

Dirk

The idea is to keep it relatively informal, either the GM or the player could request the help (this could work for new GMs as well who need advice)
The request would come through me, Mike or Garry, and we would then notify the selected LB member to drop the player (or GM) an e-mail.

I agree, the idea of a short-term mentor to help the newbies stick around is an intriguing one. Jason, how would you implement a mentoring system, would it be at the request of a player or of a GM?

Mentoring is sich an interesting idea with Diplomacy.  Since we all have different playstyles (and some have several playstyles themselves!), a mentor can so easily twist and warp a young mind.  Smile  Seriously though, I like the idea a lot.  This is such an intense game, a lot of newbies get scared away by their lack of knowledge.  Mentors can help them through the rough spots.  And the best thing mentors can do is teach the 'young-uns' that rarely is anything personal, that stabs in one game does not mean stabs in every game.

Hail and well met,
As some of you have heard, I have taken over the Command of the Brigade from Major General Former, the Earl of Trout.
I will try to keep these letters brief, but regular.
So the first order of Business is to welcome our new members!
In the short time I have held this command, the following players have joined us:
Dan Huck,
Aidan Slattery,
Dirk Knemyer,
and Darryl Good.

If you have not already done so, click on the Light Brigade Icon on your Profile page to see the full Roll of the Brigade, as well as the Statistics of the Finishes we have pulled out.
As you will see, not quite the bloodbath one would expect considering the condition of positions we usually step into!
Here is the Summary Mike Sims provided:
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
Simple, yet interesting, w/o getting overly statistical.
Clearly shows that over 2/3 of LB games can be played out to at least a survival, with over 1/3 of them leading to a successful result.

Comparing LB to the overall DC stats... (from the stats page, adding down the columns)
1113 total "results" (7 per game, 159 standard games)
of those, only 69 solos + 286 draws = 32% (less than in the LB at 36%)
272 survivals, or 24% - (far less then LBs 35%)
Then 486 eliminations - 44%! (Way more than the LBs 28%)

So the LB, on average, does more with <snip> positions than regular players do with normal positions.
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

If anyone has input to the LB Page, please let me know, it is, as always, a work-in-progress.

We also now have a space on the message boards, please subscribe to it. I plan on copying all calls for replacements there.

Final order of business.
There have been a number of requests for mentors for new players.
This is not meant to be a 'What move should I Make' kind of thing, more of a 'Why did x move fail' and general how to play/negotiate in the PBEM realm.
Any given Mentor/Mentee relationship should only require a number of e-mails back and forth and would not be expected to last the length of an entire game.
As the Light Brigade is the 'Service' group of DC, (and the best players, of course) we have been asked if we would be willing to fill this role.
It will be an informal arrangement, where GMs can request such help for a specific player (or the player can make the request) to myself or one of the Moderators (Mike and Garry) and we will then match the player to a willing LB member.

Please share your thoughts on this, by e-mail or on the forum.

And as always, thank you for your Service. This group is part of what makes DC so different from all the other Dip groups out there.
