DC191 - Fall 05 Deadline Reminder - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Heya folks,

Just a reminder that Fall 05 orders are due in approximately 11 hours. I do not currently have all sets in hand.

Secondly, the question has come up regarding the Swedish fleet retreat to Vattern last round. The variant rules are somewhat vague concerning the fleet movements through land provinces. They mention that Bolmen has two coasts - but do not mention where the dividing line between the east coast and west coast portions of the province are.

In a GM judgement call, I placed that line halfway through the province - basically from the southern tip of Vattern Lake down. This splits the province roughly equally in two and allows fleet movement from the Bolmen west coast to Vattern.

Alternatively, the dividing line could have been placed from the Bolmen/Goteborg border down to the Bolmen/Malmo border. This would prevent movement from Bolmen(wc) to Vattern.

With no guidance from the variant rules (and the omission of discussion about the subject does NOT count as guidance) I have decided to stick with the judgement call I originally made - [u:f0028f05d6]allowing movement between Bolmen(wc) to Vattern.[/u:f0028f05d6] This is definitely a flaw in the variant rules and I'd look forward to hearing the player opinions concerning this detail in their EOG statements. It is a detail I should have specified at the start of the game, and for that failure I do apologize.

Cheers folks,

Trout

DC 141 France EoG - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
I would just like to start off by saying this was a great game for me to be in, I really had a lot of fun.

Now onto my ramblings: I started out this game completely sure I was going to ally with Rob the entire game. Both Germany and england wanted me to attack the other. The only reason I chose Rob was because he's an engineer and I'm studying to become one. A stupid reason to pick him as my ally? Perhaps..perhaps not. we went straight after germany, who I immediately stabbed with a straight shot into Munich. It looked like he was going to be finished off when Russia stepped into help him out. Kudos to Andres on this, without him stepping in Germany would have been destroyed very early on, that is why the stalemate line formed later on in the game, otherwise I believe Rob and I could have steamrolled through the center of the board.

Italy tried to put some pressure on me (no doubt because of the diplomacy of Germany, (and perhaps even Steve in Turkey) Austria took advantage of the free penninsula and swept in, which saved me from losing a couple of important dots. and in the end gave me a reason to enter the med in full force. Unfortunately Steven took the same initiative and it wasn't long until we were both stalled.

In my opinion this game dragged on far too long. It could have ended as early as '06, but should have ended in 1910 when germany was swiftly removed from the game, but instead it dragged on as draw proposal after draw proposal was voted down.

In the end though I was happy to play against Steve, who I believe to be a diplomacy mastermind with dozens of dozens of games under his belt (this being my 4th or so). I look forward to playing with all of you again.

Thank you and best wishes,
Alan Farrington

Roll yer own diplo - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Greetings.

After a long hiatus from Diplo, I'm finally starting to stick knives into people's backs again. I'm even considering trying to GM a variant game that I've been mulling over:

Roll Yer Own Diplo alters the standard game of Diplomacy so that all players literally choose their own nation. Each player draws their own part of the map and picks their starting position, subject to some restrictions. These maps are then pasted together, and a regular Diplomacy game then plays out on the resulting global map.

Details at http://www.geocities.com/fool1901/rollyerown.htm

I'm interested in feedback from the variant folks. Anyone tried anything remotely like this before? Can anyone think of any "showstopper" maps which would make the game unplayable (discussed on the webpage)? And of course, would anyone actually play this?

Regards,
-Dan Mehkeri

Unknown - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Dan

A vaguely similiar variant is twilight zone which i tried to run a few years ago but just did not get the interest for. In twilight zone each player constricts their own map using all the places on the original map and then the game is played on all maps simultanesously (without knowledge of the maps)...

The fact i not a lot of people have time these days to make their own maps.

if you are interested in running a game at DC, please use the 'become a GM' link and drop one of the moderators a message.

Thanks
Steve

DC191 A Study In Baltic - Fall 1905 - The Copper B... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Holmes sat in the hansom cab as his friend Watson gathered directions. Without a doubt, he would be returning having been told that the estate he was seeking was just outside of Helsingfors - a Tudor-style mansion named the Copper Beeches. Holmes would have advised him as such had Watson asked - but not having been consulted he instead concentrated on his newspaper. The latest headlines were ablaze with news of Poland's recent setbacks, and the united front that Sweden and Finland were presenting.

Suddenly, the door was thrown open and Watson bundled himself inside. "She's at The Copper Beeches, Holmes. They say its only 30 minutes away..."

"Indeed." Holmes replied. "Excellent work, Watson." The hansom cab pulled away and Holmes smiled to himself. He had not seen his friend this excited for quite some time - no need to worry him with his observations of the skulking shadowy figures that had been pacing them - just out of sight - since their arrival in Finland...

------------------------------

Big news in the game as the three minor powers join together to deal Poland a significant set-back. Once again the balance scale levels as the adventure continues...

There were a couple disbands due to the Fall action but no retreats required. Deadline for Winter 1905 orders will be set for Wednesday, September 4th (11:59 PM GMT).

As always, please just let me know if you spot an error. Cheers guys!

DC196 Heroes And Villains - Fall 1903 - The Pineap... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Gravity is a harsh mistress...

Definitely some interesting times on the board as Germany strikes back against Russia, France strikes back against Italy and Austria lays claim to Rumania... The possibilities on this board are still aswirl - its damn exciting to watch. =)

There were two retreats as a result of the Fall, but both had only one place to go. The French fleet in Marseilles was auto-retreated to Piedmont, the Turkish army in Rumania to Ukraine. Guys, if OTB is preferred in either case please just let me know.

Otherwise we'll set the Winter 1903 deadline for Friday, September 5th (11:59 PM GMT). Cheers folks!

.ExternalClass .EC_hmmessage P {padding:0px;} .ExternalClass body.EC_hmmessage {font-size:10pt;font-family:Tahoma;} Two turns and no worries. Nice to have that start for certain.
Everyone wants Belgium but nobody gets her.
All countries except Austria have build opportunities.

We have one retreat for Austria. F(Tri) can retreat to Alb, ADS or OTB [off the board].
IF OTB is chosen then Austria gets one build.

All others have builds listed below. Let's go with a Tuesday night deadline for retreats and builds.
Since there is only one retreat needed, let's do both sets together. If someone needs to make their
build conditional on the retreat they can.

No comment on the 3rd consecutive mis-adjudication. Wink

Russia also disbands Tyrolia, and builds A StP.

France: A Mar
Turkey: A Ank
Russia: A StP

That’s it! No errors, no revisions. Slam dunk adjudication, 2 points for the GM.

DC201 - Spring 953 adjudication - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Spring 953:
Wouldn't you agree that a sunset in Lisboa is one of the prettiest sights to behold?
Well, the Norse thought that a bonfire might spice it up a bit and set the city ablaze.
Much to the dismay of the Arab Caliphates who put all their efforts into taking Lisboa.
Only to find that its Fleet from Sevilla had to settle for what is left of it.
In revenge they slaughter everyone from the Norse fleet.

The Slavic Nations and the Eastern Roman Empire are fighting eachother at several fronts.
Both see their attempt at taking Tirol fail but the Slavic army in Vladimir succumbs to the overpowering forces of the Romans.
And a little luck, or was it orchestrated, as the Swedish army in Ruthenia cuts the Slavic support from Kjonugard.

Talking about the Swedes: their leaders were convinced they had an army in Kalmar and ordered it to be convoyed to Jomsborg. But when the Baltic Fleet arrived at the Kalmar coast they only found a Swedish fleet. And the Swedish army in Reval is again waiting for its orders - just like Spring last year. Perhaps the messenger got stuck in the marshlands again.

Burgundy is again successful in the majority of its moves but France manages to avoid any losses.

The Danes fight the Norse over the ownership of Hastings but neither can call itself the winner. Their fighting has a bitter end for the Danes as its fleet can't stay in the Sea of England now that the Norse fleet has moved in from Skegness.

DC203 Galad S02 Results HERE - Map Attached - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
All Continue to Pulverize Poor Austria
A Definite Front Appears in Burgundy
A WW2 Berlin-esque Division of Austria Forthcoming?

All,
I am quite intrigued by this game as a player/GM. And, I would like to express my gratitude in both:

a] all players staying engaged in the game and
b] the patience in my power misfortune - I am back with power now!

On to business...

Only one retreat required. That was the Austrian A (Ser). The only option was to retreat to Alb
so I made that so. If Craig wishes to retreat OTB [off the board] then he can let me know within
48 hours and I will send out a correction. Otherwise we shall carry on.

One note about the map formatting: in Spring turns, I will NOT change the color of the owner of a
SC, EVEN if it is in the Spring 'owned' by a foreign power. I find that it is more helpful to players
to see what SCs may change hands if the current foreign power is not ejected. Example: Although
Serbia is currently in the hands of Turkey, it is owned by Austria and will remain Austrian if Turkey is
somehow ejected in the Fall.

**************************************************************
Deadline for Fall 1902 is Sept. 10th [Wednesday] at 5pm CST [aka 12am GMT].

**************************************************************

Oh, and has anyone ever seen Press in a game? The GM would be humored by any that
someone chooses to submit!

Only 1 of 7 in. Have only run 1 in past & poor play + nmrs made assessment difficult. I believe China's power overrated but we'll see. Nice map & some good fleet maneuver lanes make it worthwhile. Info now under variants tab, C'mon in!
