GAME NOTES:
The results are in and we've lost two players. Thanks to Michael for playing and to Douglas for taking over.
For the rest of you that are left (the four remaining survivors), we'll continue moving forward.

There were two retreats for the fall moves, but they were for England and Russia. Neither of which would have gotten them a supply center, so those retreats were recorded as disbands.

dc212 Russian email issues - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Greetings all,

I believe that the forwarding I had set up for my home email may have reset or failed (in part and maybe entirely). Please try to send email to me at both addresses until I can sort this issue out. I was setting up new internet connections at my house last night and this morning at work I see that I didn't get the adjudication email forwarded. (I have the info, I had brought it with me on another meda).

Thanks and sorry for the inconvenience.

DC191 Study In Baltic - Fall 1907 - The Musgrave R... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Holmes strode along the dock towards the Gloria Scott, mentally preparing himself for the confrontation that was about to ensue. He and his friend had landed in quite a spot of trouble - but he rest easy in the knowledge that the two of them still had some aces left to play.

Ahead of them, the men on the boat called down to the Stockbroker's Clerk with a ritual greeting.

"Where was the sun?'
'Over the oak.'
'Where was the shadow?'
'Under the elm.'

A plank was extended down to the dock - apparently the all-clear signal had been given. Holmes started forward, when suddenly a commotion ensued and two splashes could be heard from either side. Gun in hand, the goon leader turned towards them only to find Watson's cane driving at full velocity towards him. With a solid thump, the Stockbroker's Clerk was down on the ground, his weapon now easily secured by Holmes' eager companion. "Swine!" he cried. "Forgot who you were dealing with, by Jove. Why don't you go for a swim in the Baltic?! Holmes. Let's get out of here!"

"Watson," Holmes replied. "Why would we go anywhere when Mary is on that boat waiting for us?" Stunned, his friend could only look at him in shock. "It's all right, my friend. Let us go find your wife then. But keep that gun handy - or better yet, do not relinquish that fearsome cane of yours..."

The Finnish send the Polish fleet in the Mid-Baltic for a swim of their own, but asides from that not much else changes on the board. Winter 1907 adjustments are simple - only Poland gains a build to replace the one sent into the drink. Deadline for Winter 1907 adjustments will be set for Saturday, October 4th (11:59 PM GMT).

Further diplomatic missions have been fruitful - we have a 3-way Finnish/Swedish/Polish draw proposal for your consideration. Please have your yay or nay votes for this with the Winter adjustment deadline. (i.e. Saturday.)

Cheers folks! Please let me know if you spot any errors.

The Death Of Iran - a little history - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Hi everyone,

I know I am not dead yet, but the writing is on the proverbial wall as they say. I thought I would take this time to reveal some some characteristics of those around me...in hopes this can help those other leaders around the world avoid the danger.

I could go into great detail, but I doubt you all will take the time to read it, so I will do my best to make it short.

The way things were going early, I decided to work with Turkey, as the game progressed and with the actions of India and Central Asia, I actually felt it best to try to give my centers to Turkey. I figured I'd rather him have them than these bastards to my east. So for the past three game years I have been slowly giving my centers to Turkey (maybe you noticed) this was all part of the plan. The hope was that we could get him all of my centers with the exception of SHI.. Things were going well, I was holding off India and Turkey took Syr, was to tak BAG this year, TAB the next and maybe MEC and OMA the year after - finally TEH if things went right, and I would be eliminated, which was fine.

Of course Turkey agreed - it generally only took one army to take centers and considering the possibility of 5-6 builds from the sacrifice one at most 2 units, who could complain. Well apparently that wasn't enough for Turkey - he decided to stab me this season. So what does that tell me about him...well it tells me that even the the most generous of offerings isnt enough for him. This stab would only get him one more center a year earlier, doesn;t seem like something that important, but to him it was. He broke a deal entirely in his favor for the smallest of gains. Now ideally I wouldn;t write this letter, but it seems so petty of him to do this that it just annoys the Iranian people that it was necessary to make this announcement. Beware of him, dont assume that because your deal is equitable he wont stab you, dont assume that just because a stab could yield him at best one center he wont do it. Even the CLOSEST of alliances is a means to an end
for him..be very wary.

Some other opinions about other countries:

India - None responsive, poor communicator, lucky starting position, tactically sound, but not an ally by any means. Use him for what you can but dont consider him a friend

Thaliand - An amazing liar, treacherous and talented - be VERY careful of him... even the most intricate of plans with him are doomed to fail if you count on his trust

Kenya - Just doesnt follow through - lots of promises, no commitment, even if it takes the smallest sacrifice

Malaysia - most trustworthy player on the board that i have dealt with. The only one worth my time

there are others, but I do not feel sure enough about my opinion to impose on you.

Good luck everyone,
Steve - Iran

GGS 1264 - Slight Winter Adjustment Correction - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Heya all,

On review I just found my first mistake. Russia loses Tashkent to the Dutch and goes down to one center - thus we need a disband from the Tsar as well.

Apologies for the error. Cheers!

The Death Of Iran - a little history - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Hi everyone,

Since I do know Turkey from previous games, I believe this does him wrong , and is far
from true.
So untrue that I thought I must express my own opinion so to set the record straight.
I found Turkey to be a very reliable ally , and would be happy to have him as one
in this game as well , alas we are too far apart .

Diplomacy World #103 Released - The Fall 2008 Issu... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
The Fall 2008 issue of Diplomacy World, #103, has been released! 104 pages of articles, photos, news, variants,

convention reports...but that's just the beginning. The theme this issue was Science Fiction and Fantasy in

Diplomacy, so you will find plenty of articles relating to that -- but much more too!

You can download the new issue (in pdf format) from the official Diplomacy World website at:

http://www.diplomacyworld.net/

or from the Dipllomacy World Yahoo group at:

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/diplomacyworld/

Incidentally, there is now a NEW DW Yahoo group intended for open discussion among the readers of any Diplomacy

World issue or article. The forum will include polls, contests, and who knows what else? Join now at:

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/dwreaders/

Among the articles you will find in Diplomacy World #103 are:

* Frank Oosterom and Joushua Danker-Dake on Austrian Strategy

* Gerald Todd's Star Trek Diplomacy variant

* Lewis Pulsipher's Fighting SUNS variant

* David Hood on DixieCon

* David Webster, Jim-Bob Burgess, and Rick Desper on DipCon in Bangor, Maine and the aftermath

* Benjamin Hester's The Dark Ages variant

* The Hobby's First Scandal: 1964C

* Steven McKinnon on Star Trek and Diplomacy

* More of Rod Walker's "Fatman and Frottage" lunacy

* and too many other articles to list here!

Check the issue out, and be sure to send some feedback along, either in an email or in the new DW Readers Forum!

The Death Of Iran - a little history - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)

At 10:13 AM 10/4/2008, steve janecek wrote:

I'm hurt! No mention of the bastard Central Asia? <smile>

Hi everyone,

I know I am not dead yet, but the writing is on the proverbial wall
as they say. I thought I would take this time to reveal some some
characteristics of those around me...in hopes this can help those
other leaders around the world avoid the danger.

I could go into great detail, but I doubt you all will take the time
to read it, so I will do my best to make it short.

The way things were going early, I decided to work with Turkey, as
the game progressed and with the actions of India and Central Asia,
I actually felt it best to try to give my centers to Turkey. I
figured I'd rather him have them than these bastards to my east. So
for the past three game years I have been slowly giving my centers
to Turkey (maybe you noticed) this was all part of the plan. The
hope was that we could get him all of my centers with the exception
of SHI.. Things were going well, I was holding off India and Turkey
took Syr, was to tak BAG this year, TAB the next and maybe MEC and
OMA the year after - finally TEH if things went right, and I would
be eliminated, which was fine.

Of course Turkey agreed - it generally only took one army to take
centers and considering the possibility of 5-6 builds from the
sacrifice one at most 2 units, who could complain. Well apparently
that wasn't enough for Turkey - he decided to stab me this
season. So what does that tell me about him...well it tells me that
even the the most generous of offerings isnt enough for him. This
stab would only get him one more center a year earlier, doesn;t seem
like something that important, but to him it was. He broke a deal
entirely in his favor for the smallest of gains. Now ideally I
wouldn;t write this letter, but it seems so petty of him to do this
that it just annoys the Iranian people that it was necessary to make
this announcement. Beware of him, dont assume that because your
deal is equitable he wont stab you, dont assume that just because a
stab could yield him at best one center he wont do it. Even the
CLOSEST of alliances is a means to an end
for him..be very wary.

Some other opinions about other countries:

India - None responsive, poor communicator, lucky starting position,
tactically sound, but not an ally by any means. Use him for what
you can but dont consider him a friend

Thaliand - An amazing liar, treacherous and talented - be VERY
careful of him... even the most intricate of plans with him are
doomed to fail if you count on his trust

Kenya - Just doesnt follow through - lots of promises, no
commitment, even if it takes the smallest sacrifice

Malaysia - most trustworthy player on the board that i have dealt
with. The only one worth my time

there are others, but I do not feel sure enough about my opinion to
impose on you.

Good luck everyone,
Steve - Iran

DC201 (Viking) - Spring 955 Adjudication - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Spring 955: The once so mighty Danes, after their devastating defeat last year, have decided to use their ultimate weapon.
And thus Hedeby goes up in flames.
No doubt much to the dismay of the Swedes that arrived after a long journey across the Bornholmer Sea from Kalmar. Worse, they can't even get to the Danish army to give room to their frustration as the Norse army coming in from the North from Jylland, with the same intentions as the Swedes, has blocked their way. And so the Danes consider themselves really lucky with the two attackers that abounce, because where could they have gone otherwise? Not so lucky is the Danish fleet which is stuck in Oerne after its attempt to take the Kattegat bounced with the Norse trying the same from Skaggerak. And Bruge, where once the Danish flags flew over the settlements, could not resist the Burgundy armies from Flanders and Dorestadt. Although Dorestadt was surprised to find the Burgundy army from Groningen knocking at their door.

Plenty of fighting going on in the rest of the world although it looks like the Slavs receive most of the blows. The figthing over the Slavs southern and eastern border continues. Their army in Kaffa is under siege by the Romans from the Khazar Empire with support from the roman fleet in North Black Sea. With nowhere left to go, the Slavic army is disbanded. And have the Slavs just opened a front along the northern border now that they have taken Aldeigjuborg from the Swedes while its army moved into Ingermannland?
Pest, the last of the Independent nations, caught between Roman armies in Transylvania and former Independent state of Buda, see their region overtaken by the Romans; their hopes to maintain their independence with support from the Slavic armies to the north were quickly shattered. And so Pest follows the fate of the other Independent states of Buda, Jorsal and Alexandria.
The Swedes, Slavs and Burgundians have skirmishes at the borders of Hessen and Brandenburg. Norse and Arabs clash in Nantes and Asturias. The Arabs seem to more successful consolidating their positions on the Iberian Peninsula.

DC 212 About Changing the deadline - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Folks,
I've set the deadline for tomorrow because I am going to be driving for 10+ hours on Wed and won't be able to check my email until late at night. So as much as I would like to grant the extension I have to decline it. Orders are still due Oct 1 7pm EST ( 11pm GMT ).

As for changing the schedule for moves to be due on Wed and Retreats/Builds on Friday, I again am going to have to decline this as well. I've set the deadlines so that I am able to adjudicate on time.

If anyone in the game is uncomfortable or unhappy with the deadlines, unhappy with any of the other players or any other reason that causes you to be unhappy, you can write me personally and let me know. If you do that I can find a replacement for you with no harm done. You will not be ridiculed or anything of like nature. I want all players to be happy in this game.

DC 212 Deadline Reminder - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Jimmy,

Just a note dude - usually the GM sets the game schedule and deadlines. This is Rachael's perogative to do - not because its an authority trip (although it is necessary to respect GM authority in such matters) but because Rachael has the best ability of anyone to co-ordinate between the various players schedules. Simply put, she's at the center of the web keeping everyone together.

So just to be contrary, I don't like Wednesdays deadlines... I much prefer Tuesdays. =)
