By the way, we got no retreat from Gaul so the remaning fleet goes off the board!  This may be the end of the line for them... but you never know... surging back from no units and no home centers is always an option!

FALL:  Due Tuesday 10/2, 3pm Central.
Enjoy!

NEWSFLASH FROM MACEDONIA:
The Macedonian capital is recovering from a state of shock as it's relatively peaceful Prince was found poisoned in the royal palace. Security Forces will not discuss any suspects or evidence, but it is rumored that a large shipment of wine, believed to have originated in the Roman port of Napoli, was consumed at the state dinner last night. Soon after the news of the assassination was revealed, the top generals and admirals in the Macedonian navy convened and formed a shadow government that will rule for at least the rest of this year under a state of martial law. As its first act, the Shadow Government urgently dispatched orders to all Macedonian forces, overwriting previous orders and directing the forces to move West. Immediately afterwards, the Shadow Government announced that all official emissaries will continue to be received through the same channels that were used to contact the deceased Prince. Long Live the Macedonians.

We have one retreat, and it goes to the "now more than ever" withering hordes of Germania - quite possibly reduced to living on an island across that channel thing.

First off, you guys rule!
I love running games when there
is nothing to track down, nobody to hound for orders, etc.  It makes it a pleasure
and not a task… so thanks for that.  And before you chalk it up to thanks
from some random deity which you probly get every day, do remember this is
coming directly from Him.  Yeah.

So what happened?  We have
a pretty broad spectrum here… some folks grow their empire by leaps and bounds,
others by leaping bounds, some by bounded leaps, and a few are sullenly bound
to leap silently into the night as their hopes of someday dominating the modern
world are dashed by those others who were busy leaping and bounding.

ADJUSTMENTS!

RETREATS!
Well, let’s face it.
Ancient Egypt and the Hordes of Gaul don’t do so well, as they dominate the
retreat phase…

Egypt:  A Cyr and F Creta
Gaul:  A Burdigala

BUILDS!
Carthage: Build 1
Gaul: Remove 1 (or, remove the
retreat)
Germania: Build 2 (our biggest
leaper and bounder)
Macedonia: Build 1
Persia: Build 1
Rome: Build 1
Egypt:  If both units
retreat, even… but +1 or +2 if you take some retreats OTB.

That’s it!

Remember I do RETREATS and
BUILDS together, so don’t miss your builds expecting some interim mail from
me.  Builds may be made conditional upon the retreats.

PRESS:
It's not that easy being green
Having to spend each day
forgotten on the map edge
When I think it could be nicer
being red, or blue or purple
Or somewhere much more sociable
like that

It's not easy being green
It seems you don't figure into
anybody's plans
And people tend to ignore your
emails 'cause you're
Not anywhere near where they are
right now
Or where they want to be

But green's the color of a tough
turtle shell
And green can be inaccessible
like a tree top
And green can be as hard to spot
as a chameleon,
or willy as a grasshopper, or
distant as the sea

When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why,
but why wonder why
Wonder, I am green and it'll do
fine, it's beautiful
Even if no one will talk to me

First off, you guys rule!
I love running games when there
is nothing to track down, nobody to hound for orders, etc.  It makes it a pleasure
and not a task… so thanks for that.  And before you chalk it up to thanks
from some random deity which you probly get every day, do remember this is
coming directly from Him.  Yeah.

So what happened?  We have
a pretty broad spectrum here… some folks grow their empire by leaps and bounds,
others by leaping bounds, some by bounded leaps, and a few are sullenly bound
to leap silently into the night as their hopes of someday dominating the modern
world are dashed by those others who were busy leaping and bounding.

ADJUSTMENTS!

RETREATS!
Well, let’s face it.
Ancient Egypt and the Hordes of Gaul don’t do so well, as they dominate the
retreat phase…

Egypt:  A Cyr and F Creta
Gaul:  A Burdigala

BUILDS!
Carthage: Build 1
Gaul: Remove 1 (or, remove the
retreat)
Germania: Build 2 (our biggest
leaper and bounder)
Macedonia: Build 1
Persia: Build 1
Rome: Build 1
Egypt:  If both units
retreat, even… but +1 or +2 if you take some retreats OTB.

That’s it!

Remember I do RETREATS and
BUILDS together, so don’t miss your builds expecting some interim mail from
me.  Builds may be made conditional upon the retreats.

PRESS:
It's not that easy being green
Having to spend each day
forgotten on the map edge
When I think it could be nicer
being red, or blue or purple
Or somewhere much more sociable
like that

It's not easy being green
It seems you don't figure into
anybody's plans
And people tend to ignore your
emails 'cause you're
Not anywhere near where they are
right now
Or where they want to be

But green's the color of a tough
turtle shell
And green can be inaccessible
like a tree top
And green can be as hard to spot
as a chameleon,
or willy as a grasshopper, or
distant as the sea

When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why,
but why wonder why
Wonder, I am green and it'll do
fine, it's beautiful
Even if no one will talk to me

Baal speaks a WORD, is whirled
away to Dominion’s seat,
Seven hills, ringed with swamps,
tinged with melancholy wisps.
There shades of nightmare avoid
his eye, flee his silent step,
where sluggish streams struggle
down to a star lit sea,

******************************

Prayer offered to Tabiti in the
Summer of 219, somewhere in Kul Oba
Tabiti, ye God of Gods,
Supplier of Horses to our Hordes,
Harbringer of death to our
enemies,
Accept this offering from your
loyal subjects
And bring death to those who
oppose us.

Not surprisingly the only two bounces in the spring become uncaptured neutrals in the fall!  In fact lots of centers go uncaptured, not for lack of trying tho... we have a fierce amphibious assault as the Egyptian army fails to land on Crete, turned away by the Macedonians... and Sardinia, well, it sits there in the middle of the Western Med, a tranquil oasis with but a lone Roman raft floating towards its shores.  Lots of press!

ONE AFTERNOON IN ARMENIAONE AFTERNOON IN ARMENIA

“Hello, dear! I’m home!”
“*Smooch* Hello, darling. Find everything you needed at the shop?”
“Everything and more! You’ll never guess who I bumped into!”
“Shhh, no shouting. We have guests in the parlor.”
“Guests? What guests?
“Oh, just the Scythian Hordes.”
“The Scythian Hordes?”
“Yes. You know, those hairy fellows from the north. We saw that documentary on the telly about them. Anyway, they saw our notice for the room to let, so popped by to inquire.”
“Maggie, we can’t have the Scythian Hordes in the parlor!”
“Oh, George, once they let the room, I suspect they’ll keep to the kitchen. In the meantime, I put the plastic on the good couch.”
“That’s not what I mean! I’ve got the Persians in the front hall!”
“The Persians?”
“Yes, that’s who I ran into at the store. Asked them if they wouldn’t mind swinging around to appraise the new rug.”
“But the new rug’s—-”
“In the living room, yes!”
“Oh, George!”
“Now, don’t panic, Maggie. For all we know the Persians and the Scythians are the oldest of chums.”
“They’re hordes, George! Hordes don’t have chums!”
“You’re right, of course. Oh, what are we to do?”
“You go out in the front hall and tell the Persians I lent the rug to my sister for her tea with the vicar. And I’ll tell the Scythian Hordes that they’ll need to come back next week about the room because of the . . . the . . .”
“The bed bugs!”
“Brilliant, George! The bed bugs! The exterminator can’t come until Tuesday, so to come back after that!”
“Ah, I’m glad I married such a level-headed girl.”
“Oh, George.”
“But what are we to do if they both come back on the same day again?”
“We best stock up on biscuits, shouldn’t we then.”

You say that we've come far enough? That the lands we now occupy are enough. Well, I say that there are lands further on that are rich - just as rich as the lands we now occupy. There are also other powers out there - powers that will attempt to snatch our lands from under our hooves if we so much as turn our back on them.

The lands we now occupy are inhabited by weaklings. We should be able to keep moving into the richer steppes ahead - leaving our tamgas on their livestock, burning their homes, taking their women for ours and Litaking their gold. By spreading the word of the riches and the victories that we are accomplishing there shall be more waves of tribesmen that follow us. I say we do not rest until we have conquered this whole land - from sea to sea.

Famous speech by Lipoxais to the troops in Dacia, ca: 220 BC.

dc339 - Impending doom! - FuzzyLogic   (Aug 31, 2010, 7:48 am)
That's right folks, you have around 30 hours to submit orders or face the wrath of Him.  Not only will your units stand around idly twiddling their thumbs, but they're likely to also spend an eternity in purgatory!  You wouldn't want that for your troops now would you...

Tomorrow!  3pm Central.

Enjoy,
Him

Note:  We, at the greater consortium of superior beings ruling over all things ancient and worldly, are currently out of stock on bonus Irish units.  Feel free to request a rain check from customer service.

dc339 Ancient World - GameStart! - z93blom   (Aug 26, 2010, 12:40 am)
Hello all!
I'm Fredrik, born in Scandia, but recently elevated to King of Schytia. Thinking of strategies for this game I'm beginning to think that a turtle might have the right approach...

I don't think that I have played with any of you earlier. Perhaps in dc303 - there were too many people in that game to keep track of us all.
Good luck to you all. Look forward to my messengers arriving with further missives.

Your reason for being - Your adjudicator of orders. for it is me.
whom we shall all just call. "Him". that will guide you

Well some of you at least.

I expect many will be killed off and offered as a sacrifice
along the way. and to those poor souls. may you rest happily and with
full knowledge that your victors will feel no remorse. for the times are
dark, the seas a mystery, the deserts a grave, and the barbarian lands an
unexplored wilderness of horror.

Powers

Yes, the Great empire of Alexander has collapsed and many
factions scramble for power.  Among them.

The powerful Republic of Rome - led by none other than
our sharpshooter Sir Michael Norton of Loxley.

Across the Adriatic, we find Matt - leading the
Hellenistic Empire of Macedonia - one of the most influencial states in
the near east.  [.into a better time with Greece than his last game]

Southward forms the shores of Africa, from which we have the
Carthaginians - and Hannibal Lynn - Can he turn the tides of the
Punic Wars?

Further to the east we have Egypt - run by the great
and powerful Ptolemy himself.  Little known fact they just call him "Justin"
today.

To the far reaches of the eastern world, we find the
mysterious Chris - ruler of Persia, Babylonia, and the near east.

And. the Hordes.

Raiding from Asia and the far east we have the nomadic tribes
of Sarmatia and Scythia, led by the almighty Fredrik of Sweden.  (how'd
he get this job?)

In the virgin forests to the north we have the savage tribes
of Germania, led by Ross Yaggermeister.

And from the far northwest we have the Celtic tribes of
Gaul, led by Bruce!

This will no doubt be a great game.  I'm excited!
Last time I ran this variant was dc109, started back in June of 2007.  That was
only the 9th game I ever ran.  Now of course we're on dc339, or 230 games
later and my 27th game as GM.  (although completely unrelated, 230 is a great
number!  In which I played both Bruce and Justin, also in this game -
amazing how small a world it is).

House Rules

Most of you know me.  But a couple of you have not played in
my games before.  You might want to take a gander at my house rules, which can
be found at www.sims-family.net/dip/houserules.htm.
Main thing to take away from them is this. I tend to like the anxiousness
that builds up toward a deadline, and so I will rarely, if ever, grant an
extension for a turn currently in play.  I think that takes away from the building
excitement, the writing ppl minutes from the deadline, the frantic last minute
changes of orders.  So beware, and pls don't get pissed if you write m a
day before the deadline to request more time, only to find I am a bastard and
turn you to the curb scoffing mightily  "MWUHAHAHAHA little peons OF
COURSE you get no more time!!!!". er. politely declining your
request.  You get the idea.  Wink  In return I'll do my best to adjudicate
in a timely fashion, usually w/in a few hours of the deadline.

*****************

The Offerings

Between spring and fall turns all players should submit an "offering"
to the gods!  Failrure to accomplish this may result in a player's random
units having it's order ignored the following year!

The offering may be in the form of a prayer to the gods, a
motivational speech to your troops, dialog among your generals, a narrative,
etc.  One-liners are likely to be deemed offensive and worthy of sever repercussions!

*****************

Enjoy!

We'll probly be here a while.  So whatever happens,
keep in mind it's all for fun, don't take it too seriously, have
fun w press, etc.

Sincerely,
"Him"

PS. for those who made it clear to the end of this
email, be sure to request your bonus unit in Ireland!

dc339 - A few provisos, a couple of quid pro quos - FuzzyLogic   (Aug 25, 2010, 9:24 pm)
Hey folks,
Just to clear up a couple of
rules:

* Bithynia (Turkey) is not a
supply center.  If you downloaded the RP file prior to when I fixed it
yesterday, it will have this *incorrectly* designated as a supply
center.

* 40 SC total.  21 to win.

* Where you see the little white
connecting marks, these are land bridges.  Like Byzantium to Bit or Lyd,
an army or fleet can move directly between these provinces from another.

* Moving from the Aegean (Aegeum
Mare) to the Black Sea (Pontus Euxinus) is directly possible!!  Travel via
the Sea of Marmara is assumed, and any units in Byz, Bit, or Lyd have no effect
on AEG being directly connected to PEU.

* Army movements from Cartenna
to Sag (Spain) directly are possible.  Even across the Straits of
Gibraltar, which seems to otherwise obstruct such movement.

* Denmark (Treva) is connected
directly to Scandia for army or fleet movement.  Treva effectively has a
canal, and borders both the Oceanus Germanicus and Mare Suevicum with no
coasts.

* Similarly, ATHENS HAS NO
COASTS.  Even tho it appears to separate the Aegaeum from the Ionian, a
fleet can enter from one side and exit to the other side freely.

* Delphi directly connects to
Sparta, even tho Athens connects to Ionian.

* Ireland is impassible.
Any bonus units in Ireland may cheer for their respective countries.
Cheering for a country is intended solely to boost morale, and does not have an
impact on orders, unless such boost to morale leads to moves that do directly
have a positive effect on said country.

dc339 Confirmations! - FuzzyLogic   (Aug 25, 2010, 2:54 pm)
Hey folks, and welcome to this 339th game of Diplomaticcorp Diplomacy!

First things first, this game filled up so fast that we got ourselves 9 eager stabbers for an 8-player game.  So if anyone was borderline join / no-join, let me know and you can opt out!  Otherwise I'm happy to have you all, but one of you gets to be the cheerleader while the rest control forces.

So...

Get back to me w a lil 'ole confirmation that you're good to go in this one.  Powers will be random.  I ran this variant once before, and nobody from that game is in this game, so everyone is new to the variant - tho everyone is also some of the most cutthroat players I know!  All veterans in here, I'm expecting no delays, no replacements.  Just lots of blood...

Enjoy!
