DCI f02 results! - FuzzyLogic   (Oct 02, 2009, 4:57 pm)
This game is nuts...

Balkans lent Austria a hand, but forces in Tri and Gre didnt get the memo... which barely saves Spain from dropping to last place. Russians trade Bud for War, and a plague in Saint Petersburg sees everyone scatter from the region. Lowlands give off a sigh of relief that they wont be forced to live in France, Norwegians turn their focus north, France liberates their Med port, and Italians continue their search for Dracula.

11th place - Frank Martin, Lowlands.

There are two retreats:

French A Gas can go to Par or Bur
Austrian A Bud can only go to Vie

Then there's a matter of new units:

France: Build 1
Germany: Build 1
Norway: Build 1

Balkans: Remove 1
Spain: Remove 1
Lowands: Remove F Pic

Retreats and Builds are due together! Tuesday 10/6, 4pm Central, tho as usual I'll send out whenever I get a full complement.

Just a handful of hours left, in fact if you were to count them on 10 hands, you'd only need half a finger on each one...
Everyone got their orders in?

Nigel.

Sorry that I can't speak for Max, but when I'm stabbed by four powers in one season, and none of them write me the next season with an offer of hope, the Belgian forces decided to try to run for a new homeland...anywhere, to fight another day.

Guys,

after spring 02 I am stunned by Jorge's superior play, and propose we vote on a solo for him as soon as we can.

01 Autumn was impressive with those stabs, but to get the stabbed to then vacate two more of their dots - wow that really takes some art. A joint suicide pact is jst amazing. i don't think we will see better play however many twists this game could take. So why not just bow to the master now and vote for the fastest ever DCi.

Your GM is thoroughly confused. Norway moves down into Munich, yet tries to escape from Denmark - but gets trapped there by an untimely dislodged fleet... Germans search for a new home in Poland (irony?)... Austria and Turkey both move against the Balkans (one of them even aided by the Balkans themselves!), and the Balkan fleet is pushed out of ION by the Italians. The Lowlands slump off to Picardy and hope for a hail mary to avoid becoming the first elimination. A crazy twisted game indeed!

There are 2 retreats due, in 2 key naval spots - North Sea for the Norwegians and Ionic Sea for the Balkans. Retreats will be due Monday 9/28, 4pm Central, tho I'll send them out whenever I get the requisite orders.

"I'm still standing" Elton John

haha.....you guys suck! And the GM says "NO! Who's going to write press if Frank is gone???"

Well, I can at least say I saw the chance coming. One member of the new "Let's just kill Frank" alliance didn't hold his cards too well, and gave me enough of a peak that I considered ordering a cover to Holland. Prudence told me though that if there were three against me, it might be better to fail catastrophically than to inch into oblivion.

As it turns out (sorry to get heavy for a bit), I've got a friend in Gib who just went into CCU do to a couple of brain embolisms. He's in poor shape. So I might be getting on a plane in a day or two. With these current results, I won't have to think about letting the game down by disappearing or just going through the motions. A good thought (or prayers from the faith based out there) for my buddy Jeff would be appreciated.

Huge Kudos to Max, who while still at two, had the player most trying to step on this throat laid low. Also kudos to an unnamed player (I'll save for eog) who crafted the perfect lie to help sway things against me.

To Jorge and Joe, a pox on both your houses. ; )

Oh....and I have a very live fleet that can help somebody. If you have anything in mind, drop me a line. I won't be responding right away most likely, but there is no sense wasting a perfectly good unit. And if you all keep me alive, I might just keep the press flowing when I have the chance.

Take care.

Dc Mods are urged to avoid Atlantic City, as the Moderator picks get slammed! Balkans and Germany are reduced to 2 a piece, to be outdone for last place only by our newbie game winner and odds guru Frank.

Norway is the clear winner being the only player to score 2 builds, tho certainly Italy, Russia, and Turkey will be happy to build at least 1. Everyone else broke even, staying at 3 centers, albeit with some interesting swaps taking place!.

DCI 09 s01 results! - FuzzyLogic   (Sep 09, 2009, 6:40 pm)
PRESS:

AP Amsterdam: The combined forces of the Lowlands struck out against the German Republic, with a vengence that has not been seen from the Dutch. "Yes, we share many commonalities," stated Foreign Minister Adolph DeKryup, "But we looked at the buildup to war, and we came to the conclusion that there was no way the Lowlands and Germany could stand side by side for long, and with two of our very valuable home supply centers bordering Germany, it was concluded that our best chance to actually survive this war went through prompt aggression toward our neighbor." It will be known soon whether the thrust was successful, and if the Lowlands support from France and Italy will be present. Conversely, if the Lowlands guessed wrong on the nature of their neighbors' intentions, they will at least go down swinging.

Lowlands to Germany: Max, I really went back and forth on this one several times. I REALLY liked the idea of us working together. But in the end, I saw a season shortly down the road where Germany gets two builds, and promptly walks into Ruhr and Holland, and the only way I saw that I could prevent that was to hit you right now.

Lowlands to Norway: I just made life much more difficult for you. Please write me for an explanation before, or shortly after, you curse me to oblivion.

Lowlands to France: Are you in Burgundy? Did things go well with your other neighbors. If so, and if I guessed right, I've got a deal for you.

Lowlands to England: I had to choose a side, Garry. Jorge's path to victory does not necessarily need to go through me, but yours does. Know that things can change, and I'll try to be flexible throughout.

Looks like there’s going to be a lot of players without a single first turn build, and those that can get them will certainly do so at the expense of someone else. I love this variant already!

NEXT: Fall 01 due in a little over a week: Thursday 9/17, 6pm Central.

Enjoy,

DCI 9: Las Vegas Odds to Win - garry.bledsoe   (Sep 03, 2009, 4:56 pm)
Everyone should remember this...English as a nation [especially in games like say Diplomacy, futbol, etc] tends to choke when labeled as a favorite. Here's to me living up to that potential.

AP Las Vegas:

Just posted are the odds to win the famous DCI 9 Diplomacy Invitational, a gathering of world-renowned gamers on one of the games biggest stages. The competition will be held over the next several months and will be watched by at least dozens of rabid (and probably slightly bored) net followers.

Austria: 3:1 - Until dethroned, Dan is the champ. To be the champ, you've got to beat the champ. Dan's odds would probably even be better if he had not drawn the typically difficult starting position of Austria. Even with that though, Dan's abilities (see Tiger Woods) are so dominating that odds makers still see him as the prohibitive favorite.

Russia: 7:2 - Nobody in the game has been hotter than Nefarious Nigel (see Brazil futbol), and he's drawn Russia as a base. Game experts are all wishing they could be flies on the wall when Dan and Nigel eventually start butting heads.

England: 9:2 - Far away from the favorites, 2009 WB Champion Garry is probably giggling about his projected path to victory (see Dr. Evil). "Get middle countries to fight, check. Get France and Spain on different sides of the fence, check. Hope everybody ignores my slow and steady growth, mate."

Balkans and Germany: 6:1 - Hey! They're moderator picks (see Ryder Cup Golf). They're here for a reason. Give Drew or Max a little breathing room, and you'll wish you were in England or Spain, where you can scream from a distance for those closer to fall on their swords for your behalf.

Spain and Turkey: 9:1 - Matt and Adam have top notch resumes, and they are both starting in the potentially awesome starting corner positions of Spain and Turkey. If either get an alliance from the outset with a neighbor and get rolling, look out (see the University of Florida and Oklahoma football teams). If they get stonewalled by their neighbors, it could be a long game at three centers.

Lowlands: 10:1 - So Frank plays one game in the past two years and wins. Is this an aberration, or is this guy so good that he can dust off his diplomacy hat and produce an epic win over an elite field (see Bobby Fischer). Time will tell, but from his past exploits, it certainly won't be boring.

France and Norway: 12:1 - France is typically a great starting position in standard diplomacy, but when you throw a player to your south, the position becomes much more difficult (see Belgium in conflicts of the 1900s). And Norway, sandwiched between Russia and England, can be a nightmare if the player doesn't get off to a good start (see Belgium in conflicts of the 1900s). Both countries offer a great location if they can get rolling, but both face potentially daunting opposition at the outset. Jorge and Joe will need to be very active on the diplomatic front early.

Italy: 15:1 - Mikael is an incredible player, but this is Italy we're talking about (see Italy in 99.9% of diplomacy games). Under the best of conditions, Italy sometimes has a hard time grabbing more than Tunis, and in this variant, there's already a Spanish fleet there. Mikael will need to work his miracles (see anything done by Michelangelo) to see Italy grow into a monster.

Hope you all enjoyed this. Please let it be known that this is all off the cuff, and all slights/exaggerations were not (wholly) intentional. haha

I better get back to work now. : )

DCI 9: Las Vegas Odds to Win - fmartin at psomas.com   (Sep 03, 2009, 2:54 pm)

Why Brazil futbol?

Ok I possibly have some Portuguese/Brazilian blood, but I'm damned if I've ever mentioned in DCI. Just who/where have you bugged?

Pity my speciality is fast play not crowded, and this won't be a sprint, so my odds are way overstated - and Jorge at 12:1 - you have got to be kidding. Spot on with Dan though.

Everyone should remember this...English as a nation [especially in games like say Diplomacy, futbol, etc] tends to choke when labeled as a favorite. Here's to me living up to that potential.

Haha…..Michael, note that I also lumped
France and Norway together at 12:1, stating that both countries offer a great
location if they can get rolling (check) and that Jorge and Joe will need to be
very active on the diplomatic front early (check).

Course, some of my predictions went
horribly wrong too, so I guess a career as an odds-maker is not in my future.

Cheers!

AP Amsterdam:

Prime Minister Abraham Kuyper returned from a one-week vacation to find that the tense situation in Europe now looks like inevitable war. His response...."Bah!" The collection of governments of Ruhr, Belgium, and Holland hope the PM has more up his sleeve than "Bah", but only time will tell. Until then, this reporter can only observe that defensive fortifications are being brought up to snuff, diplomatic emissaries are flying, boating, and taking the rail to all points of Europe, and that opiate sales have gone through the roof.

Great!

A list of who's who in diplomacy, and because of a huge couple of days of night work, I'm just seeing this game start announcement. For those who have written, my apologies for my silence. that will be rectified shortly.

A bit about myself as an introduction. My name is Frank Martin, and I am a civil engineer (roadway and bridge construction management) in Granite Bay, California (a suburb of Sacramento). I've been playing diplomacy for a very long time (dating myself), and have always considered it the best of all games. I have three children, G15, B8, G5 who keep me very busy, and a lovely wife that keeps me grounded. Aside from taking my children to various athletic events and playing a very little soccer (football) myself, I like to read a good book, and very occasionally get involved in a spirited game of diplomacy.

As for the game, I like to think that I write often, strategize fairly well, and am able to be flexible to the changing environment. If you feel like I'm quiet, it's probably because real life has snuck up on me, as I don't cold shoulder anyone (although if you stab me twice, don't expect long loving responses to any further missives).

I wish the best of luck to all, and hope everybody has a fun experience. Thanks to Michael in advance for running this game.

Frank

DCI 09 - GameStart! - FuzzyLogic   (Aug 30, 2009, 10:47 pm)
Greetings, and welcome to the two-hundred and seventy-fourth game of Diplomaticcorp Diplomacy - The DC Invitational! This game shall henceforth be titled “It doesn’t get any cozier than this!” For our game will be sporting 11 players, on a relatively standard map. Crowded? I’d say so! With not a single neutral center on the board, the opening rounds should be drastically different from most games.

The DCI was meant to be a game that will pull together the best of the best, the young and the old, the tall and the small… And this lineup will certainly do just that:

2008 DCI champion - Dan Dzicowicz, playing Austria, ddz999cat23(at)yahoo.com (ddz999cat23(at)yahoo.com)
2009 WB champion - Garry Bledsoe, playing England, kielmarch(at)hotmail.com (kielmarch(at)hotmail.com)
Top Provisional rated - Frank Martin, playing the Lowlands, frankmartin(at)surewest.net (frankmartin(at)surewest.net)

Moderator Pick - Max Victory, playing Germany, maxatrest(at)yahoo.co.uk (maxatrest(at)yahoo.co.uk)

This looks like a great group. The selection criteria was revised a bit this year to create a bit more diversity among the DCI invites. There are now categories to honor some of the newer features of the site like Mikael of the Companion Knights and Jorge of the Light Brigade, as well some unique accomplishments like Joe playing his first 10 games without a single elimination, or Adam running some outstanding games including a marathon WB game as a new GM. In addition we’ve added some Moderator Picks for a bit of a wildcard that brings Drew and Max into the fray, and the best solo without a doubt goes to Matt for beating 34 opponents in his WWIV win. Then of course we have the DCI fundamentals – last year’s champion Dan, the 2009 Winter Blitz winner Garry, and the top rated established and provisional players - which brings Nigel for his dominance over the years in speed play and Frank for his win against some great opposition in A&E.

That rounds out our group!

Attached, you’ll find the Crowded map. Things are going to get rough -fast- in this one so I can’t wait to see where things go. But with a US holiday coming up next Monday, we’re going to allow just a bit of extra time here, and set the Spring 01 deadline for: Wednesday 9/9/09, or opening night for ‘9’. If any of you are planning to go see this, be sure you’ve got your moves in ahead of time! 6pm Central / 2300 GMT.

There is also a little matter of prelims - and for the first turn, they’re required so that I know we’re off to a solid start. Whether you plan to change them or not, some set of prelim orders are due to me by this Wed 9/2/09, 6pm Central / 2300 GMT. Then the actual turn is due the following Wednesday 9/9. Press of all sorts is accepted, be sure to turn in any creative submissions with your regular orders.

Here’s to a lively and entertaining game!

DCI 09 - GameStart! (DC Invitational) martinhaven Sep 03, 01:45 pm

Congratulations to Dan, whose efficiently ruthless play in both rounds clearly separated him from the other ten players, and earned him a victory he deserved more than anyone else. I'm very happy to have come in second in such a strong field. Steve, thanks a lot for designing, recruiting and managing an excellent tourney. Like Dan, I really enjoyed the gunboat variant in the opening round. This was my first time playing gunboat, but figuring out how to communicate despite the rule limitations was a lot of fun. In retrospect, the first round seemed to dictate much of the course of the second, with who had how many points directly affecting strategy. The most crucial example of this was Lee dropping out and being replaced by Garry, who had nothing to lose by shaking up the board. This is an argument against keeping score in the first game, and making it purely an elimination round in the future.

Organiser's Comment: I, for one, really enjoyed this year's DC. I know
some players were not in favour of the gunboat game but overall I think the
2 games were played very well. All 11 of my 'selected' players played to
110% of their ability (again with one withdrawal from my original 6). I am
amazed that both games have ended in 2008, when traditionally we normally
finish around April but then I wonder if the Christmas season and upcoming
winter blitz have been responsible the large number of DC games that are
finishing at the moment.

I would like to thank all the players for their commitment to the games,
and a special thankyou to the players who sent me comments, opinions,
feedback and general emails as we went along. I particularly loved the
diplomacy that was happening in the second game.

DCI Turkish EOG - ddz999cat23   (Dec 18, 2008, 3:42 pm)
Hi All,

First as always, many thanks to Stephen for GMing. Great job.

Great playing all around. I had a excellent time in both rounds. From my perspective I really liked round 1 and the gunboat. A varient and/or gunboat in round 1 would be my recommendation for the future.

Good to hear Mike's perspective in regard to the thought process behind a potential GAF. That was what I was truly afraid of once Mike and Clark turned on Jorge. As always a bit of luck accompanied my success. Here's how the stars aligned for me...

1) From the top I looked to jump on Russia. As it turned out pretty much everyone else had the same thought. If Nigs had any success anywhere else he might have been able to repel me.

2) French incursion into the Med and the clear Western Triple helped make allies of Austria and Italy rather than what I might otherwise expect as the Turk and the IAT formed to set up a stalemate line against the EGF. I had intended to keep it in hopes that the EGF would crumble, and even if it didn't that would still mean a share in the DCI. But at this point things couldn't be going much better.

3) Then... out with Lee in with Garry. This was really a HUGE turning point for me, since I had offered - and was ready to deliver to Lee - Rum or Bul to cement our relationship. That was really part of our AIT deal. He would then send his armies up the middle. With Garry in, the IAT was already up and running. So, why mention such a small matter to Garry?

4) When Garry jumped out of the AIT it really upset the apple cart. Not only bad news for the AIT, but he also supported Germany against my support of Russia. I figured this might be the end of me if Austria and Germany are coordinationg and my only other ally Mikeal was being eaten up. But the even bigger problem was that I was a marked man as a round 1 winner. But as it turned out Garry's move led quickly to the FGT.

5) Both stabs of Garry came with the same idea propegated by Jorge that the AET could out slug the FG. Leting him drive the negotiations made my involvement more plausible. But...I must say I agreed with this AET thought but with recent Austrian complications and my fears of an AGF (sooner or later) I had to get Garry out of the game ASAP before any French or German help could arrive. (Pretty much for all the reasons given by Mike in his EOG). It was during these years that the tournament aspect of the game really made it interesting. However, I was quite close to joining an AET, especially the first time around. But sometimes short term gains really do trump long term promises (unlike when the Red Sox traded Jeff Bagwell for Larry Anderson... sigh). I really did want to see what the AET could do against Germany as Clark was pretty exposed to the east and south. But giving back Bud seemed like I would be opening the door to the AFG, expecially with Garry now coordinating with Mike... yikes!

At one point I looked at the possibility of going for a solo but didn't see enough dots out there for me with French control of Italy. I suspected the caliber of players was too hight to let that happen.

I also I really wanted to see a German unit walk into Paris with all the French manpower out to sea. That would have been fun to watch. But the FG was too strong.

Anyway, great playing. Hope to see you all across the board again sometime. Maybe in the Winter Blitz.

Dan Dz.

DCI French EGS - FuzzyLogic   (Dec 18, 2008, 10:02 am)
First off congrats to Dan, a well-deserved DCI win, owed mainly to some good play in the 2nd round. For me, the game kinda went in two phases... call them phase 1 and phase B.

In Phase A, I was thinking about how to approach the game, in any sense other than it just made sense for me and Clark to attack Jorge, cuz Jorge had won in round 1, and we had to outperform him in game 2 to have any DCI chances. (This is where tournament play did alter my strategy a bit). Eventually tho, for some reason, we all came to the idea of opening in a triple. It took a lot of convincing on the part of all parties, but I think ultimately, Jorge wanted to see my fleets go into the Med, cuz two of his opposition for the DCI were Mikael and Dan, so he surely wanted to see them hit before himself... and so we (after a lot of back and forth) agreed Jorge would open hard to the north, I would open straight for the Med (passing up on Iberian centers in 01) and Clark would open to the Baltic Sea and set up a capture of Sweden real quick.

It all worked great in 01, we got the jump in every direction. At this point I started talking to Mikael, to see if he'd want to work w us on our team, and go for Turkey, or if he wanted to fight me instead... and we didnt really beat around the bush too much, he pretty much said he was going to shore up against me - before I'd even made a move against him. I would have liked to see what would have happened if I'd been given the chance to go against Turkey, my original preference... overextending the French navy clear to the east. Who would have stabbed me and when? Smile

It was bad enough, at one point France had 6 fleets and a single army, and was ripe for an invasion many turns. If I'd gotten my fleets that far into the Eastern Med, it would have been even that much more appealing, but alas, nobody made a move against me! Despite spending multiple rounds completely exposed, my allies stuck with me, and this really enforced my committment to stick with them.

Then we had a few botched orders, which really messed up our team, mainly by playing with peoples' minds I think. After the initial conquest of StPete, Jorge made the "doh" blunder of being over-aggressive, and trying to take Livonia before securing StP for a fall turn, and he walked right out of StP leaving it uncaptured. This left a Russian fleet alive way longer than it should have been, and really slowed us down. Then, Clark started ordering a bit conservatively, keeping a fleet posted in Sweden instead of moving it back into the Baltic, and then Jorge started keeping a fleet posted in the North Sea. All of these were just cascading conservative measures, and what happens once the trust gets tainted in some way. I was still confident at this point that both parties on my team trusted me, and so I kept my push into the Med going... leaving my north shore wide open. But eventually the breakdown between EG was too much to overcome, so I had to pick one side or another... i.e. Phase 2.

Being that I had not a single army, I really couldnt stab Clark, (by design) and so I made the shift north towards England. He tried (somewhat successfully) to get Austria and/or Turkey on his side, to deal a crippling blow to Germany and lighten the pressure on himself, but I think it was too little too late. Even if Austria had gotten a good stab into Germany, our 5 fleets outnumbered the English fleets by 1, so we would have succeeded against England in time. It did surprise me the turn Jorge helped Nigel into Sweden instead of himself, since that cost him the necessary equalizing fleet which could have gone right into Liverpool.

Then we had a few flipflops from Austria... and I never really knew whos side you were on Garry! (true Diplomacy - I think that is how the game is best, always fluid and dynamic) Sometimes you were with me and Clark, other times you were with Jorge, but the good thing for me, was that Dan stabbed you... then you tried to work with him again, and he stabbed you again. I'm not sure how things would have played out differently if Dan had not made those stabs - you would have gained ground in Germany, Dan would have had to work around the edges, and with StP and the Med blocked, there wasnt a good path for Dan to keep growing in that plan. In any case, I'm glad the stabs occurred, cuz it turned Austria around from the German front, and after that it was all downhill.

We did consider trying for a 3-way AFG instead of FGT, but once Turkey had pillaged most of Austria, that became too much of an impossibility. I also considered what I could get that would be better than a 3-way draw, and my conclusion was: nothing. With Turkey destroying Austria, I felt Turkey was going to lodge himself squarely onto 13-14 centers, and a pretty impenetrable position. He didnt have Italy, so it wasnt technically a stalemate line, but it would have taken a good 10 years of play to try to push him back, and MAYBE score a 2-way, but it was just too hard to pull off once Turkey is that big. So I figured the 3-way was the best result I could get, so I took it.

Good game to all, excellent GM'ing as usual by Steve, congrats to Dan for the win...

Dci 2008

Organiser's Comment: I, for one, really enjoyed this year's DC. I know some players were not in favour of the gunboat game but overall I think the 2 games were played very well. All 11 of my 'selected' players played to 110% of their ability (again with one withdrawal from my original 6). I am amazed that both games have ended in 2008, when traditionally we normally finish around April but then I wonder if the Christmas season and upcoming winter blitz have been responsible the large number of DC games that are finishing at the moment.

I would like to thank all the players for their commitment to the games, and a special thankyou to the players who sent me comments, opinions, feedback and general emails as we went along. I particularly loved the diplomacy that was happening in the second game.

anyway - without further ado. Final Standings of the DCI 2008
