As the 2011 DCI Begins We All Have to Wonder - Can Adam 3-Peat?
Movement Definitely Occurs But Hard to Tell Who is Attacking Who
One Thing is Clear: Several Powers Have an Interesting Fall with Enemies on Their Border
And We Start This DCI Right - WE HAVE PRESS!

All,
Thanks for the patience with our delayed start for one of our members to celebrate the passing of one of their own. We get kicked off without a real hitch so we can move directly to Fall since we have no retreats needed. Heck, we even had no bounces! However, I am betting that won't be the case in the Fall.

Let's make our Fall deadline next Thursday at 4p CST (Thursday is the 2nd).

Please let me know if you have any issues with reading the map. I can try to create one solely with abbreviations and then create the "unit" map without the abbreviations if needed. The abbreviations and the units make the map quite busy and difficult to read.

Good luck and now for the press!

2-Peat DCI GM Garry

GM's Press (My Early View on Odds for Each Player - Don't Read Too Much Into It; Should Be Fun Reading Though):

Adam (5:1) - well, as the reigning two-time champion it is hard to put a high number on Adam; BUT he did draw Russia which could make things a bit interesting. Lucky in drawing a corner power that may be enough to propel him to number 3. But a Swedish move east could be a complication. And, of course when you are going for number 3 it is hard to fly under the radar...

Mike S. (3:2) - highest ranked player in a good corner spot with early appearances of a French alliance? Yeah, I call that a formula for odds-on favorite.

Dave (20:1) - someone has to be the longshot unfortunately and this time I am giving that honor to Dave. The WB is a good proving ground but a center spot next to Adam doesn't inspire confidence. Add to that a southern neighbor like the solo machine Dirk and it looks like a tough draw. Good luck.

Jerome (17:1) - formula for elimination: 1) be assigned a central power in a congested area not overly-populated with SCs; 2) find the most experienced player in the congestion and open with a move toward them; 3) only get one neutral in the Fall? Things don't look good...

Ross (12:1) - sorry Ross but I guess I am anti-northern powers, especially when one opens this passively. Your possible saving grace (aside from brilliant play of course) - no real northern centers exist so you essentially have a safe backside since there is little point in someone bringing F's to the north.

Mike H. (6:1) - a strong player in a strong continental position and a seeming DMZ with his closest threat yields a strong candidate for a sleeper pick. Add a power vacuum in the center where Germany normally is and things could get interesting. Will the sleeper awaken? Father!!!!! Oh sorry. Bad sci-fi/fantasy references are known to slip in occasionally. Those responsible for the bad references have been sacked. The odds have been finished by Garry the Greek-llama...

Dirk (2:1) - do you believe in the streak? Well I do. Dirk is the definition of in-form and should do well. If not for the central position Dirk would be the odds-on favorite. We will see how he fares in a central position this year after being on the precipice of winning last year from a corner position only to have Adam snatch the victory from his hands (along with Adam's two allies).

Sun (9:1) - England has little advantage in this game. Aside from an uncontested opening center, it appears that Sun will have his work cut out for him. Add to that two veterans to his south and a congested Scandanavia and things don't look promising.

Matt (6:1) - does "sleeper pick" by definition lend itself to only choosing one sleeper? There can be only one!!! Ugh. Not again. Just seems wrong to waste a good Highlander reference on a Turkish player but it just happened. I think those responsible for the sacking of the original writers have now been sacked. Turkey affords Matt a comfy little corner to consolidate his power from. If events elsewhere get interesting Matt could be allowed to create a strong base that will be hard to overcome. Of course having Dirk to the north and being is an SC-deficient area keep him from being a bigger favorite.

Green and green, an intolerable mix. Red and blue, too garish for you. Maroon and grey, they shouldn't be allowed to play. Pink and turquoise, cover your eyes. Yellow, sweet yellow, shall be no surprise.

Historical Note:
February 19, 1600: Perhaps the most fateful event of 1600 in European history did not occur in Europe at all. It happened in Peru. There, the volcano Huaynaputina erupted, spewing sulfuric ash and triggering worldwide climatic consequences. It led to uncommonly cold winters in the Baltic states and Switzerland. French and German wine harvests were either delayed or destroyed (Ai! Tragedy!). And in Russia, things were particularly bad. In 1601, extremely wet weather plus July frosts contributed to widespread crop failures, the first year of a three-year famine which would eventually kill one-third of Russia's population, cause the downfall of a Tsar, and cast the entire country into a ten-year civil war.

Diplomacy games may contain lying, stabbing, or deliberately deceiving communications that may not be suitable for and may pose a hazard to young children, gullible adults, and small farm animals.
