PREV  Spring 1649 Adjudication:  NEXT

Hi guys,

we now have our first results! Allow me a couple of observations:

- Neither the Spanish F Naples nor the Ottoman F Constantinople were ordered to the Ionian Sea. I find that rather remarkable. For I'd expect these two fleets would without any delay feature in a second Battle of Lepanto.

- Eight minor powers got taken out. DC499 saw seven suffer the same fate by Summer 1649. I suppose 8 might be an average haul.

- Both games saw the Spanish Army of Flanders hold. Perhaps one of those frequent mutinees going on? Or is the quintessentially noncommital policy of holding a virtue in its own right?

- And while on the subject of similarities between these two games, I again see Austria and Turkey not step on each other's toes. Are the Southeastern borderlands not attractive enough of an early Austrian target? Part of me wonders whether I ought to make Transylvania an Austrian build site. That might stoke more early conflict between the Emperor and Turkey (or Poland).

Regarding that other design matter we've been discussing (circumnavigating Africa) I've indeed so far designed it to be a transit route rather than a whole new battle-zone. A "Cape Colony" buffer space might however suck away Turkish or Spanish resources. Perhaps not a bad thing. But the game as presently designed contains my favoured solution.

I ought to also emphasise how four-way intersections (marked by arrows) work. They ensure that four spaces all adjoin. Such four-way crossroads can be found between:

- Flanders/UPr/GER/ENG

- Morocco/ATL/Sev/BAR

- Sicily/Naples/TYS/ION

- Constantinople/AEG/ION/Can

- Levantine Sea/AEG/CAN/Kar

- Tunis/ION/GOS/SOS

- Scotland/IRI/Ire/CAL

I was asked how Realworld is installed. Well, download:

http://diplomacy.dirknet.org/realworld/realworld.zip

Extract the exe-file. Run it. That will install the program.

The 1648 variant module needs to also be unzipped and then placed in Realworld's designated "Variant Files" folder. Thereafter you can launch Realworld and should find 1648 listed in the variants drop-down menu.

I generally will attach a realworld-status-file (.dpw) to adjucations. Open such using Realworld and you can then explore the program's functionality.

Happy dipping!

Charles

The English Commonwealth will hold a gala execution of the tyrant king Charles Stuart at the Banqueting House this day. Free public attendance! Fun for the entire family! Hot dogs and lemonade for the kiddies, too! First 1000 visitors will get a Charles I bobble-head, ready to decapitate and reassemble for hours of good fun.

The Parliament was distressed to learn that long-negotiated agreements with certain foreign powers were to be immediately repudiated by these very governments, thereby upsetting the balance of power throughout Europe. "England must act in its own defense in light of this perfidy," announced the Prime Minister, "and for the safety of Europe, herself!"
