PREV  Winter 1936 Adjudication:  NEXT

While fiercely embroiled in their continental power struggle, the seven Great Powers took interest in the recent United States presidential election: Franklin D. Roosevelt retained his position in defeating challenger Alf Landon. Roosevelt, know for his focus and investment on internal social and economic reform, remains unlikely to involve his industrial powerhouse in European military matters. This is certainly welcomed by those unlikely to curry favour with the democratic United States while diminish hope for those who were holding out hope they may have an ally in their ongoing intrigues.

Meanwhile there are rumours of significant potential German intrigue: a Japanese diplomat was assassinated and discovered to have papers relating to an "Anti-Comintern Pact" that would also involve Germany. Whether the Germans are actually involved in such a gambit remains unknown.

Over in the Soviet Union the Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic was dissolved over December 10 and 11, thus converting Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia as full Republics of the Soviet Union. How or if this will impact the Soviet war effort remains to be seen.

At precisely the same time, on December 11 in Britain, Prince Albert, the Duke of York, is crowned King, to reign as King George VI. some observers are wary of how this might tilt carefully balanced diplomatic agreements in the months ahead.

Prelims for Spring 1937 are due in 27 hours! Other upcoming deadlines are at the end of this note.
