PREV  Spring 1651 Adjudication:  NEXT

Hi guys,

so what made the front page in Spring 1651's news?

As far as I'm concerned, the end to Northern tranquility! Denmark has moved in force against her Scandinavian neighbour. Meanwhile, Polish-Swedish relations seem to have deteriorated and Stockholm's invasion of Mother Russia continues apace. Now, the situation is reminiscent of the Great Northern War (1700-21). Denmark, Poland and Russia vs. a Sweden ably led by the warrior-king, Charles XII (one of my favourite Charleses, btw).

In other news:

An Franco-Autrian war seems well underway. After last year's failure, Austria has now taken Switzerland, if only because the Cardinal's men won a major battle in the Po Valley. Hm, some battles you'd rather not win...

England is as secure as never before. Not only have the Danes left British soil, but also the surrounding waters. Meanwhile the Commonwealth has despatched naval squadrons into French and Spanish waters. Perhaps looking for easy plunder...?

Perhaps the Sultan's successes have provoked a backlash. For Poland, Russia and Spain appear to have joined ranks in a Holy League against the Turk. Who knows, might the Emperor's foray into Hungary suggest that Austria's part of such a crusading endeavour?

In summary, it looks like three major conflicts are raging: A (Great) Northern War, a Franco-Austrian one and a "Great Turkish War" (1683 and all that). Can't wait to see where we go from here!

But first, Bryan owes me a retreat order.

Happy dipping!

Charles
