PREV  Fall 1938 Adjudication:  NEXT

I entered the wrong Soviet orders. The below ones are somewhat different.

---

Hallo zusammen,

here's the latest:

Britain: The rise of the Nationalists and the Polish attack upon Germany have been a godsend for the Prime Minister. He now has won over the General Secretary and reasserted control over Denmark. Quite a turnaround.

France: The Nationalists have won the civil war. The Western Mediterranean has effectively become a fascist lake. France's last overseas holding have been lost. And Britain, previously a target of French expansionism, has enjoyed something of a recovery. Quite a similar trajectory to dc538, I might add. Will we be seeing a French race to the bottom?

Germany: Berlin has been saved for now. But Britain, Poland and the Soviet Union are all hostile. That's a long list of foes. Germany's bid for Hungary has failed, leaving the country in quite a poor shape.

Italy: Four extra SCs for the Duce! Clearly he's 1938's Man of the Year.

Poland: Okay, no immediate gains in Germany, but the pressure on Berlin is mounting by the hour. The Soviets are enjoying considerable growth. How will that work out for Warsaw?

Soviet Union: The Republicans are now history. One wonder what Uncle Joe now makes of his pro-Nationalist experiments. It seems he was never interested in the republic's welfare. The USSR itself is doing rather well.

Turkey: Little could be done about the fall of Ankara, but Bulgaria might have well been gained. Yet the neutrals thwarted Turkey's plans, suggesting Kemal's not the most popular statesman around.

Winter 1938 follows on Friday, 6 November.

Cheers,

Charles

SOVIET PRESS:
From the desk of Stalin:
Fascist agents at work deep in our beloved Bolshevik state have struck deep at our hearts. Even the agency entrusted with the security of the People has become compromised. Trotsky spits his poison, entranced by the drug of decadent opulence proffered by the capitalists, and his poison spreads. We have rooted out class traitors at the highest levels of the NKVD. They will pay dearly for their crimes against the worker, the soldier and the farmer, and their puppet masters in Berlin will regret declaring war on the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in this cowardly and underhand way. To this end, we have ordered the battleship Great October Socialist Revolution to support the expulsion of the German Navy from Copenhagen. Scandinavia must not be allowed to fall under the sway of the Nazi menace. May our sailors be strengthened by the knowledge of the certainty of socialist victory.

Vasily Mikhailovich Blokhin has returned to Moscow after successfully re-educating the Spanish in correct Marxist-Leninist doctrine. While this may result in Spain being overrun by the reactionary Nationalists, a false dawn of damaged communism would delay the progress of global socialism much more than the ascent of a corrupted and venal Italian proxy on the Spanish peninsula. Indeed, the people would be enlightened as to where their class loyalties lay under such a regime and would most certainly rise up en masse and overthrow such a state. If instead the Popular Front had been successful, the people could have been soothed into thinking that they were not being exploited and thus lulled into a stupor from which it could have been difficult to awaken them. We thank Vasily for his service. We know that he worked tirelessly for the benefit of the Spanish people. He was injured during his time there, and we hope that his index finger fully recovers in time for him to give his former NKVD superior Genrikh Yagoda a fitting final salute.

Izvestia
The war in the Middle East goes well. Our forces are marching on the Attaturk's capital as we speak. Casualties on both sides have been light, as many Turkish and Arab soldiers are recognising the struggle for what it truly is and joining the Army of the People of the Soviet Union in the fight to establish a real paradise here and now rather than falling for the lie of a false paradise after this life is done.

Pravda classifieds:
1.) The Red Orchestra is travelling through Switzerland. Will they play Wagner, Debussy or Bellini?
2.) Large numbers of body bags needed for no particular purpose. Please send to Eastern Anatolian Military Command by express mail.

News from Spain:
The Spanish Republican forces have been ordered to march deep into France, leaving their homeland to be overrun by the Nationalists. There was quite a bit of dissension in the ranks at these new orders, but it was soon made clear that those who had previously been in command had been working for the Fascists all along.

The Tribunal for Espionage and High Treason in Valencia has laid charges against the previous leaders of the Republican forces, including rabid Trotskyism and being agents of the POUM.

New from the USA:
"The Spanish News Bulletin has put the lie in its classic form, congratulating the PSUC, the Comintern-controlled party of Catalonia, for tearing away 'the trotskyist mask' of the POUm and revealing 'the hideous grimace of fascist counter-revolution.' This was accomplished when the communists allegedly discovered hoarded weapons and documents incriminating the POUM in a fascist intrigue. Judgment followed swiftly. 'The documents prove that the trotskyist spies were in direct contact with the spy agencies of fascist states and before all with Germany.' Therefore, 'All this material shows the role which German and Italian fascism played in the trotskyist uprising in May.'

Lies. All lies.

The NKVD were the killers in the Paracuellos massacres. Manuel Azana Diaz was compromised and blackmailed. The Comintern, after the killings of the non-Stalinist delegates, was simply another name for the Soviets. The communists are the ones who are the traitors. They are leaving the left in Spain to die for their own dark purposes. Stalin is a monster who must be stopped.

Eric Arthur Blair, writing in The Partisan Review
