PREV  Spring 1904 Adjudication:  NEXT

Hi Players,

You've really set me a challenge this time. Try as I might to come up with something clever to say about this season's moves, I'm really having trouble coming up with more than a thoughtful "Hmmmmmm."

Conflict in just two provinces this turn, and both were unsuccessful. Austria, with help from Turkey, held off a renewed Italian attack on Trieste, and Italy likewise held firm in the Ionian against an attempt by Turkey to break out of the Aegean.

I suppose if I were going to highlight anything it would be the interesting array of pieces on the board. We've noted in prior turns the impressive mixing of armies in Austria and the Balkans. This time the thing that jumps out at me are the unusually tight concentrations of naval power.

* The Russian armada completely owns Scandinavia. Not sure I've ever seen four northern Russian fleets so early in the game before. Heck, I've seen the Tsar solo with fewer northern fleets than that!
* The French navy has taken up a real liking to the south of Britain. The English King has pulled back in defense, but could it be too little too late?
* In the Med, we have a stand-off at the moment, but watch out. Here comes the Turkish Black Sea fleet, steaming through the Dardanelles on her way to join her sister ships. Will Italy be able to hold her ground, er, I mean seas? Time will tell.

RETREATS: None

NEXT DEADLINE: Fall 1904 orders are due Thursday, Feb 3, at 18:00 EST.

BONUS PLUG: Temple Con is this week-end in Providence (really Warwick), R.I. There will be Diplomacy. In fact, it is the First Event on the Nor'Easter (four Northeastern events) and the Second Event on the North American Grand Prix for 2011. DC's very own Dirk Knemeyer is flying in to play, and I'm figuring on dropping by to say "Hi." I'm pretty much retired from face-to-face (after a very brief and unremarkable career) but I might get drafted into a game. Anyway, I know it's short notice, but if you're in the neighborhood (like anywhere in New England) you should drop by.

Cheers,
Chris
