Hi guys,
and so another year draws to a close... I mislabeled the prior adjucation as "Fall 1653" and apologise for any arising confusion. We've now finished our fourth year, i.e. 1652 AD.
I've taken the opportunity to review our recent history and identified four main conflicts to date:
THE NORTHERN WAR:
1650 saw Denmark overrunning Sweden's German domains and by Summer 1652 Courland and Stockholm had equally been coloured purple. Yet from Spring 1651 onwards, Denmark has been embroiled in a two-front war - one of mixed fortunes in the west and Swedish recovery in the East. This wider Northern War has drawn the Emperor into the conflict on Copenhagen's side, while Poland and Russia have in some shape or form collaborated with the Swedes.
THE HABSBURG-BOURBON WAR:
The Spaniards attacked France in earnest in 1650 - only to find its logistical base in Flanders being taken over by the pro-French English, who also otherwise lent critical support to the Sun-King. France then widened the conflict by taking on the Austrian Habsburgs, achieving shortlived gains. Of late, following France's withdrawal from the Iberian peninsula, Franco-Spanish relations have seemingly much improved.
THE DELUGE:
The mid-17th century is known to Eastern European historians simply as "the Deluge". A time of intense upheaval. And so we have witnessed a protracted war pitting the rzeczpospolita against Muscovy, while also drawing Sweden and the Sublime Porte. So far, the chief benefactor has been the Sultan.
HOLY WAR IN THE MEDITERRANEAN:
Spain and Turkey appear to be on a collision course. The massing of units doesn't suggest an amicable transfer of control over Naples took place.
So, that gives us four distinct conflict zones. Now, this might well be an erroneous reading of the map. To be certain a very incomplete one. And who knows? We might see further additions (or indeed removals) from this list.
Spring 1653 is set for 23 July. As always, the sooner you submit prelims, the happy your GM shall be! :)
Happy dipping!
Charles
