DC176 - Fall 1912 Adjudication - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Russia's position is untenable. While I could probably still give Austria some fits the writing is on the wall as Austria now has a few extra armies to play with in the east now that Russia is out of the picture. I'd be happy to go for the French-Austrian tie. Just happy to have survived and upheld the honor of Italian arms!

DC173 OK Computer - Spring 1910 - Noise Epic - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Heya Players,

Things in the east remain relatively dead-locked. The situation in the west - much more fluid. No retreats are required so we'll move right into the Fall 1910 turn. Will things remain on the same track or are there still a few unseen forks in the road? Deadline will be set for Monday, October 13th (11:59 PM GMT).

Battle onwards! Cheers!

I'm extending the deadline to Tuesday, 10/7; 2359 UTC.

the game without screwing it up.

See you tomorrow!

Seismic f09 retreats! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
No surprise, Turkey retreats to Berlin. Then some interesting Seismics
open up the action in the Med as the GOL gets isolated again, and Spain
gets a lot more connected. Venice closes the east coast, and the Turk
fleet there jumps to the west - a creative use of Seismic orders!

Turkey must choose NC or SC for his fleet in Tuscany.

Turkey also gets the only build:

A: 1/1 Even
F: 11/11 Even
R: 8/8 Even
T: 13/14 +1

NEXT:
Turkey to build and pick a coast by Wed 10am Pacific!
Spring 10 due Monday 10/13, 10am Pacific!

SEISMICS:

A: SPLIT SWI/GoL, JOIN SPA/PIE
F: Split TYR/GoL, Join Spa/Tus
R: Split Mun/Tyr, Join Swi/Vie
T: SPLIT VEN/ADR, JOIN TYR/APU

Slack GM [sorry this is late] but even slacker players...

I am still missing FOUR sets of builds/disbands. Thus I decided to give the grace period. Note: it is shorter BUT
we have already gone over 24 hours past the original deadline.

Get those orders in!!!

DC205 - A Troutish Intervention - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Heya folks,

From what I hear our game here is slightly under the weather. With all of your permission, of course, I'm happy to step in and run a couple turns until the winter storm conditions in the Antarctic clear up and we can get in touch with Dean once more.

Now, now, now.. Stop screaming. I promise, I'm not that bad of a GM. =P

What I need from you all is for you to please forward me the orders you've submitted to Dean for the current turn. I'll set a temporary deadline for Wednesday, October 8th (11:59 PM GMT) - but if I get all orders in before that I will adjudicate early.

On behalf of Dean and us mods, I do apologize about this little hiccup in the game. But what do you say - lets get it moving again, eh!

Cheers guys!

Players of Dc205

At the moment, it seems some of you are having some trouble contacting your GM and your adjudication of 4th Pctober has not yet been emailed out.

We (the mods) are aware that Dean has been MIA for a little while now (a couple of NMRS in his games) and we are endeavouring to contact Dean.

We're hoping that Dean will be back online and ontop of things but if he doesn't - a temporary GM will step in a run DC 205 until his return - but we dont want to charge in yet since it's only been 3 days past the deadline.

Thanks for your patience and we will keep you updated.

GM Ratings - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Hi Guys,

Just a suggestion. A new table on the Stats page for GM's.

~ Average Days per turn.

For finished games only. Number of days to complete the game divided by number of seasons, (excluding Summer, Winter), yields average number of days per turn. A reasonably good measure of a GM's efficiency, particularly when measured over a number of games.

If a GM is average 12 days or better, thats a quick moving game, 15 days or less, (over a number of games) its gonna be a slow game!

How about it guys?

This is not a criticism of any particular GM, or GM's in general, its just intended to stimulate discussion of our hobby on this great site! Cool

dc204 ~ The Final Frontier - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
I lack orders from the Klingons, Cardasians, and Romulons, and there are
a couple of important errors in the orders I have.
The Klingon is MIA in all his games, so we may need to find a
replacement. The Romulon probably just overslept, and the Cardassian
I'm guessing has gone AWOL. While the UFP is loving this, the game is
in a temporary stasis while I determine what's up.

BTW: Has anyone heard from Dean Gardiner (Klingon)?

We are just figuring out financially what is the best move.

DC205 The Pleiades - Spring 1903 - Like A Can Of S... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Heya all,

You guys are good... All orders have been forwarded to me and the Spring 03 turn has arrived. Germany makes an error in judgement in trusting England, the last Austrian center is over-whelmed by the Italians and the Turks bludgeon their way into the Aegean Sea.

There were two retreats needed after the Spring, but both the Austrian army in Vienna and the German fleet in Belgium only had one option other than OTB... I auto-retreated Austria to Bohemia and Germany to the North Sea - however if OTB is preferred by either party than please just let me know and I will correct.

So where do we go from here? Okay - it's very important to realize that Dean is STILL your GM. I am only shepherding the game along until whatever crisis has coloured Dean's life at the moment has cleared. As such, please send your Fall 1903 orders to BOTH myself and to Dean. As soon as your good GM is back in contact, I will be turning the reins back over to him.

Until then though - you're stuck with me. Bwah-hah-hah! =P

Fall 1903 order deadline will be set for just under a week - for Monday, October 13th (11:59 PM GMT). Please just let me know if you spot any errors in this adjudication.

Cheers guys. Thanks again for all the patience you great players have shown.

Unknown - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
There are a lot of issues with implementing something like this.
How do you handle time a game is paused looking for replacements? Should a GM be 'penalized' for that? We don't track data to remove that time from the equation.
How about special games like the winter blitz? That will bring the average down without cause relative to their normal game speed.
Also, any metric like this will have 2 effects.
1, It will cause GMs to race ahead, trying to reduce their number. This is not necessarily a good thing for game Quality. Any time you track and publish a metric, this happens. Human Nature. So you need to use metrics that will push forward helpful behaviors (like the metrics we currently have on the site.)
2, players will use that metric to 'punish' slower GMs. Our GMs are all volunteers, and besides those who are so poor then need to be referred to the moderators, I will vote against anything that could cause a GM to feel bad about a game (s)he ran for any other reason.

Games get delayed for all kinds of reasons, and I think such a metric would be unfair, and counterproductive.
That said, suggestions like this are Great! Please make more and dont get discouraged by those that dont find wide support.

DC200 Winter - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
From Berlin:

Germany formally wishes to discuss terms of Surrender; we no longer care to unilaterally prosecute a war against the overwhelming force of the Russian/Turkish alliance. The only benefit that Germany's efforts against Russia has provided is to give our "allies" the luxury to nip at each other and Germany like starving dogs. Germany no longer cares to be the kennel keeper and would like to make peace with the Russian Bear for the survival of the German people.

Germany hopes the Russian/Turkish alliance will view disbandment of the offending Army occupying Warsaw for its true intent; a show of good faith. Ambassadors from Russia and Turkey will be given safe passage through our lines and all surrender terms will be given full consideration. Our only regret in making this pronouncement known is that our only true ally, Italy, will be left in the cold. Germany would humbly beg that terms of surrender offered to Germany be extended to Italy.

From the Office of the Germany Chancellor

Some way to reward or publicize GMs who do a good job is appropriate, however I do see the same drawbacks that Jason does.

- Some games are slow. Some people like that. Others like blitz. I started with playing 2-week games, with 2 full weeks for spring or fall. Adapting to the faster pace of diplomaticcorp took some time, tho GMs are still welcome to run any pace they want.

- Generally, a GM should state in his/her house rules what tempo he'll use. That way players know ahead of time. So the true merit is not whether one runs fast or slow, but how often one keeps to the pace he stated.

- Things will go wrong, so the real question is how to help new GMs get up to speed, rather than make a tally to have them seem less adequate.

- Most GMs take pride in their games. Just like any sense of volunteering, you dont need to be in lights to enjoy the reward of your contribution.

- GMs DO currently get merits to advance in the ranks of the knights.

It wouldnt hurt tho, to simply divide the game time by the number of turns, to put days per turn on the game page... it would make it easy to compare the games.

"Generally, a GM should state in his/her house rules what tempo he'll use. That way players know ahead of time. " Mike's suggestion strikes me as a very good idea, with the key words being "ahead of time," rather than once a player has committed to a game.

To be fair, you are also missing orders from the Ferengi for this next turn. Not through lack of attention mind you.

We are just figuring out financially what is the best move.

DC211: Seismic Rumbles and Rolls - S1901 - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
I wish to thank each and every one of you for your patience today. I have been laid up sick for the last two days, so I am still in a fog. Whine, whine, whine, whine, whine.

Consequently, as a special one-time treat, today's adjudication comes to you via RealPolitik. After Friday, it is highly unlikely that using RealPolitik will even be possible again.

Deadline for S1901 Seismic: Friday at 1000 CST. I am hitting the road Friday afternoon, so I really do need all orders on time. May I take this opportunity to suggest trying prelims? They're tasty AND nutritious!

Each nation gets one seismic order. If you have ANY questions, please do ask me. It's like kissing – the first time is always the most awkward.

Deadline for F1901: Tuesday, October 14 at 1000 CST.

Austria:
A Budapest - Serbia
F Trieste Hold
A Vienna - Budapest

England:
F Edinburgh - Norwegian Sea
A Liverpool - Yorkshire
F London - North Sea

France:
F Brest - Mid-Atlantic Ocean
A Marseilles - Spain
A Paris - Burgundy

Germany:
A Berlin - Munich
F Kiel Hold
A Munich - Ruhr

Italy:
F Naples - Ionian Sea
A Rome - Apulia
A Venice Hold

Russia:
A Moscow - Sevastopol
F Sevastopol - Rumania
F St Petersburg(sc) - Gulf of Bothnia
A Warsaw - Ukraine

Turkey:
F Ankara - Black Sea
A Constantinople - Bulgaria
A Smyrna - Constantinople

"so I am still in a fog."

I thought this game was Seismic, not Fog of War! Although a mix of the two would be *really* interesting!!! Maybe I'll GM that one next.
