dc422 end-game proposal succeeds! - jerome777   (Jun 14, 2012, 3:10 pm)
Hi everyone,

The Draw Including All Survivors end-game proposal has passed!

Congratulations to the three remaining players, namely Thomas (England), Matt (Germany) and Mike (Turkey). I thought this was a well-fought game, and was interesting to watch. I hope you guys had fun playing it, and we welcome end-of-game-statements being posted. You can either reply-all to this message, or post EOGs directly on the Blitz message board.

Cheers,

Jerome

YEAH!!!!! Finally!!!  Smile

Thanks Herome for administering the game. Thanks, also, for working to clarify the "distance" and  "auto disband" rules.

Congrats to my fellow survivors, Matt & Fletch! Game well-played. Don't know which of you was holding out hope for a solo, but glad the light shone through and we ended up with the DIAS.

And with that, I can let another miserable Blitz tourney fade in my rear-view mirror.

dc422 end-game proposal succeeds! (Winter Blitz) TheFinalCountdown Jun 27, 08:40 pm
Sorry this took so long...
I started this game deciding that under no circumstances would I work with France. I've played Germany before and just found that working with France was not the way to go. That said, I made nice overtones to France and agreed to DMZ Burgandy. Friendly relations with Italy made me feel better about the decision and Austria and Russia each agreed to leave me alone. Starting with two builds and having France on the run was a good first year. I made some tactical blunders in the next two years as France stuck around and it ended with England and I stabbing each other in Belgium and Denmark. I threatened England that I would go suicidal on him if he didn't give back Denmark and he relented. At this point, France was on the run and a year later, Austria attacked. Repositioning and firming up my alliance with England allowed me to repel Austria and move armies East. At this point I also convinced Turkey to stab Austria while telling Austria I was on his side. That move ended up helping a lot as Austria basically ceded his centers to me at that point as he charged against Turkey. After that, there were a few moments where I thought I might have a solo chance, but I made some more tactical errors and then a 3 way was pretty much the only option. It took us a few years to figure that out, but we got there.

In another strange game note, England and I never seemed to actually sort out our alliance, but it carried both of us through to the end of the game with as little trust as I've ever been a part of in an alliance. Turkey and I didn't speak until at least five years in.

Thanks to all and to Jerome for GMing...

For those of you who decided to push the deadline envelope (why does it seem to always be the same group??? Smile), you've gotten a repreive.

One player has an emergency and needs an extension for the weekend!

New Deadline is Monday June 18th!

But remember: the earlier you send me moves, the more weekend you can enjoy without the Sword fo Diplomacy hanging over your head.
I will process the turn as soon as I get a full set of orders.

A Priest, a Rabbi, and a Monk walk into a bar. The Priest says to the
Rabbi, "I didn't turn in moves".

All his units held.

True, but maybe it will help get our orders in on time.

DC421 Russia's EOG - catsfather   (Jun 13, 2012, 4:58 am)
First, as others have said, thanks for GMing this, Chris.  These tight, fixed deadlines that the winterblitz requires make the task a bit too stressful, I think.

Okay, a bit brief as I didn't really get up to very much, but...

Opened with separate alliances with Turkey (Eric) and Germany (Hugh), but it must've been obvious to both straight away.  The attack on Austria (Phil) was to be epic.  Unfortunately, I got greedy and thought I could do it without Germany.  I couldn't.  The rest of the game was just push-retreat-push-retreat-possible alliance-push-retreat with Germany.  I wish I hadn't turned on Germany (so early), but at the time I thought it was the right thing.

Phil, sorry about your experience in this game.  Austria's a difficult power at the best of times and in this game it was a horrible position.

I did have a good opportunity to stab Turkey at one point.  I seriously considered it and it probably was the right thing to do at that moment within this game, but I let it pass.  I just wasn't sure.

I must go check-out these stalemate lines, as I was certain that I was in a very weak position.  In fact, when I NMR'd* I was worried that France, Germany, and Turkey would decide to punish me and go for a three-way draw.

Anyway, it was a friendly game and I enjoyed it.  Thank you all.

*I think my NMR was karmic (is that a word?).  I'd just days earlier sent a rant in dc404 which included how "I never NMR, blah, blah, blah, ain't I wonderful, blah, blah".  Two days later I NMR in this game.  No-one to blame, but myself.  It serves me right.

DC404 Complete - jason4747   (Jun 12, 2012, 8:30 pm)
DC404 Russia End
of Game:

Leaders of
DC404,

It was a
pleasure, despite all, and I do really hope to play against any of you again in
the future.

First, a
Big thanks to Eamon for taking over out game.
I really appreciate it.  I wish
for us and for you the game would have played all the way out.  I liked your style and graphics - very cool.  Keep the flags!  I know you have only done a few games, but you
will be a great GM.

Second, a
thanks to Mike, our original GM.  Hope
all is well - sorry you had to drop, whatever the reason.  Life can do that.

For the
players:

I did not
mean to be such a doofus there at the end with my idea about keeping the game
going.  I have actually been playing in
Diplomatic Corp since the beginning about 12 years ago.  I have had a great time, but far, far too few
solos.  I tend to make a solid coalition
partner who ends in victorious draws.
For this game, I was going for a solo for a change, as the game was
meant to be.  That is why I really wanted
to keep going despite all the turmoil.  However,
it took a few rants I could realize DC404 was just beyond salvage.  No problem - and thanks to all for even
entertaining my last shot.

 What that
really means is  --- despite appearances ----
I was going to stab the hell out of Gerry when it could really make a
difference for me.  I know Jyri (France) and
Mikael (England) would find that hard to believe as many times as I politely
refused to turn to the dark side, but I was ...like a true diplomat when/if the
time proved right.  The catch is that
Gerry, like a true Gerry (German) was about the best (apparent) ally I could
get.  We were spot-on allies like Jyri
and Mikael were - hence the tough as nails pace up north.  I agree with Gerry in that we were getting through
due to good play and some luck.  I think
we would have had England and then France.

Based on
the other EOGs, looks like most likely Gerry and I would have both got a bunch
of E/F centers, then he was certainly going to be gunning for me, and I for him
as I assume Gerry was also going for a solo.
I wish we could have played that out to the end.

Hamish,
thanks for playing the abandoned Austria.  I know what you mean
- it is always fun to take over an abandoned power to see what you can make of
it.  Don't worry about the apologies -
not necessary.  We all have those days.  I never understood exactly what happened, but
I may well have made an incorrect order, but rest assured when the stab came,
and I hope it would have, it would have been spectacular.  Of course, that goes the other way as well,
you were fast as big and bigger than I was, plus more concentrated.  I was in for a run for my money with a two
front war for sure.  I hope I did not
ruin the whole experience for you - you were a fun ally with good spirit.  The fun would really have come if you and I
could have really gone for stabs later in the game - or allied against Germany
even.  Of course we had Italy and Turkey
to destroy first!

Speaking
of which, Erik, you were a sporting ally and enemy.  You had a good stab, probably just a little
too early.  Once it was done, it was
done.  You got up into Sev, and I was
thinking I was dead if not for the fact that Gerry still slightly needed
me.  His Belgium stab probably kept him
from turning on me like Kirstie Alley on a jelly doughnut.  I could not see any advantage to turning back
to ally with you, but then I did not figure on Hamish getting so big so fast
either.  Hope to see both of you again
soon.

Kristian,
- fun playing with you too.  I was
constantly trying to get either original Austria or Turkey or both or someone
to attack you as well.  And of course I
was trying to get your help in beating back Austria and Turkey half the time
too.  Would have been interesting to see
how that might have worked out.

Anyway,
that is long I know, but I put a lot of time into this and it was a good
time.  Hope to battle again in the
future, you guys are all professionals and very decent dippers.

Jason/Russia

how I might improve my GMing, please do let me know.

And if there is interest, I have an open

Thanks to everybody, especially to Éamon for taking charge.

Finally the war is over and we can move on. I must say this was the
worst Dip I've ever played due to the numerous NMRs. The only
amusement I had was the early communication with Gerry. I don't
remember much of the game nor do I want to remember.

Like Gerry wrote, the Western front was pretty much two alliances
fighting each other. As I saw England was going to be eliminated I
decided to let him down. Never believed Gerry/Germany would break
the deal with Russia, but wanted to give him a chance. (FYI, Gerry,
I had a backup plan, but it's not public...)

Anyway, sorry Michael about the stab. Had I known this game would
end like this, you'd be alive. '

I'll take a break for the summer, but I'll be back on DipCorp in the
Fall.

Cheers,

Jyri
