DC412 WB12 Rd1 - Spring 1901 Results - Corrino   (Jan 23, 2012, 6:19 pm)
Hi Players,

I'm afraid I'm not one of the brilliantly witty GM's who can weave a major narrative into the results every season.  That's a pretty cool thing to do, but I'm just not that creative.  You might get one or two moderately clever wisecracks, but I'm not promising anything.  If you're not satisfied, please feel free to write your own press and send it to me for publication.  Okay?  Okay.

And so it begins....

Episode 1 - Frog on a Stick?

It would appear that the French Tourism Bureau did one helluva job this past holiday season, because everybody wants to visit France this Spring!  The Germans are already motoring through the vineyards of Burgundy, while English and Italian units are calling reservation agents about beachfront properties in the north and south, respectively.  Bonjour, mon amis!

Elsewhere on the continent, a few heads are gently bonked together in Galicia, Venice and the Black Sea.  Friendly, or not?  Too soon to tell.

RETREATS:    None, of course

NEXT DEADLINE:    Fall 1901 orders are due Thursday, January 23, at 18:00 EST.
Cheers,
Chris

Orders as resolved.  Report any errors to the GM within 24 hours.

To all my apologies.  My family's health including my own has taken a turn for the worse and I am unavailable for further play.  I'm sorry for the disruption that this will certainly cause, but I need to put my needs before my games at this point.  Good luck to all and may the best man/woman win.

subject bar of the emails you send me. Thanks!

There are no retreats! But at least there are a few bounces: Black Sea, Burgundy, Galicia, Trieste/Venice... a healthy dose of inaction. I'm going to make a daring prediction: Portugal will not be the only unowned supply center after the Fall. In fact, I'll go so far as to venture that three, count 'em, three centers will be unowned going into 1902.
Below, you will find the orders as adjudicated. Because this is a tournament game, I will *not* publish moves as written (meaning that you cannot peruse your opponents' orders for mistakes or for zany commands like "A Budapest is *this close* to solving the fundamental problem of alchemy... but it got distracted by the latest Katy Perry video."Wink With this email, unless I've absent-mindedly forgotten, you should find a map of the S1901 adjudication (.gif), the current map (.gif), and a RealPolitik file (.dpy) for those of you adjudicating at home.

Hmm, time to get our orders in?  Sorry, I've been quite busy on my Dip time getting ready to run the Diplomacy tournament at TempleCon, February 3-5 in Providence, RI (http://www.templecon.org/12), but I gotta get some orders in.  Can I get a bit of slack next week with deadlines, Mr. GM?  Any chance any of you are close enough to here to think about coming??

Also, you've all undoubtedly heard about my "Drive for 330" for WorldDipCon in August in Chicago http://windycityweasels.org/wdc ?  I've only met a handful of you, and I'd love to meet you all there.

Cheers,Jim-Bob

Cheers,
Jim-Bob

DC 413 Spring 01 Adjucation - untitled36   (Jan 23, 2012, 9:47 am)
*Clash in the Black Sea! Dozens Dead!*
*Germans Vacation in the East!*
*Russians Head North for Spring Festival*

Hey all,

Interesting first turn! Everyone got their moves in, so congrats on that! There were some pretty unique openings this game, so I'm excited to see how those play out for everyone. Very few clearly aggressive moves, so the alliance structure is still up for grabs, at least from my bird's eye view. Might be different in the trenches. I like hearing from the players about your plans/discussions/etc as it helps me experience the game a little more.
I had a couple people ask some questions about what I will or will not do as the GM. I will NOT normally check your moves for validity and let you know if they are invalid (or a bad idea, or whatever). In most cases, I don't really even look at your moves until the deadline and I am inputting them into RP. So if you order A Syr-Par, I'm not going to point out the absurdity of that. HOWEVER, you are always welcome to ask me direct questions like "What happens if I order A Syr-Par?" And then I would respond. Likewise, if you want to know about complicated "what if" scenarios involving supports, or convoys, or whatever, I'll always do my best to answer. But I won't take the initiative to correct a move if you write it wrong. The exception would be if you are very ambiguous on a move, I might contact you for clarity (Like if someone ordered F Ska-Nor, for example). It's ultimately your responsibility to submit clear moves, but that would be a situation where I might possibly contact you. If you have general strategy questions, I have to be very careful with those as an unbiased GM. Those I would deal with on a case by case basis.
The real point here is just ask if you are unsure of something. If you ask me a question, I will do my best to answer it, if I can do so in a way that is impartial and fair to all. But if you don't ask, you're on your own.
No retreats, so we move on to Fall 01 on Thursday at 8:00 AM CST (2:00 PM GMT?).

Thanks!
John

*Announcer's Voice, accompanied by upbeat music*
"Welcome once again to the Annual Winter Blitz, the game where seven players compete for semi-fabulous prizes! And now, heeeere's your host..... JOHN!"

Thank you, thank you! Please sit down, your standing ovation is embarrasing me! Before we begin, let me go over some rules:

HOUSE RULES:
During the Blitz, I hold to Diplomaticcorp house rules. Except to say I reserve the right to handle any situation that comes up however I see fit. So... I follow the house rules, except when I don't. Got it? Smile But seriously, I don't expect we'll have any issues. I just have to cover myself. If you ever have an issue, whether it be I recorded your moves wrong, or you disagree with my handling of some situation, you have a hard and fast 24 hours from the deadline to contact me. Otherwise, the adjucation (or whatever is debated) stands.

YOUR BEST ALLIES:
Yes, Diplomacy is a game where you can't trust anyone. Take a look at the faces of our players. Completely untrustworthy, every one of them. So what do I mean, "your best allies?" orders(at)diplomaticcorp.com, and Prelims! Yup, the orders email is your first, last, and only defense against the capricious whims of your humble GM. You just know you sent in those orders, but I have no record of them? If you cc'ed the orders box, you're safe! If not, tough cookies! And Prelims. Oh, I could write ballads about my love for prelims. I'd suggest that as soon as I send out an adjucation, you fire off some prelims. Who knows what that silly old "real life" everyone is talking about might bring you? Loss of internet? Emergency travel? Barbarian hordes ransacking your dwelling? Well, Prelims make sure you at least do something. Otherwise, you get to say hello to my old friend "NMR." We don't want that. Trust me. He's not a nice guy.

OTHER RANDOM STUFF:
Please make sure you put DC413 in the subject line, ideally followed by your country and season. I'm not nearly the stickler about this that some GMS are, but still, it makes both our lives easier.
The Game goes on NO MATTER WHAT. If you will be journeying to the moon for a couple weeks, we will NOT put the game on hold or delay deadlines. If you know you will have an extended absence, either give me conditional moves, or find a stand-in (one who is not a Blitz player or GM). Also, press is "Black" meaning you can send press to be included with adjucations claiming to be from yourself, an anonymous source, or even someone else. HOWEVER, purporting to be me (the GM), or any of the tournament directors in press or even in private emails is strictly forbidden and you WILL be expelled from the game and most likely the tournament as well.

DEADLINES:
The Blitz is set up for Spring and Fall on Mondays and Thursdays respectively. Summer and Winter are on Tuesday and Friday (when required). Orders are due by 8:00 AM CST on each of those days. I'm terrible with coverting timezones, but I think we are -6:00 from GMT, which makes the deadline 2:00 PM GMT (I think). I prefer a "first thing in the morning" deadline over a "late night" deadline, so either send them in the night before, or get up early, kids. Also, on a technical note, I accept orders until I BEGIN adjucation. Whether that's at 8:00 AM sharp, or 10:15 AM. I'm generally pretty prompt, with the possible exception being Fridays, but be safe and send in early! FIRST DEADLINE IS THIS COMING MONDAY AT 8:00 AM CST (2:00 PM GMT??)! In a Blitz game, I don't normally send out reminders for moves, so be a big boy and get your own moves in, eh?
COUNTRY ASSIGNMENTS:
I know, I know. "John, shut up and tell us what country we are!" Okay, okay! Put that dagger down! I'm getting there. Assigned via OpenOffice's random number feature, we have:

***** Please note, there is a small change to the map.  The property

labeled Imm is now Tar (they flipped spots).  According to Mr Sims,

when I loaded RW a while back, I grabbed a mid-version copy of the map

As pointed out:  this is for Fall 01.
Mark that as my first GM error.  Any preceding errors are hereby forgotten. Smile

Oh, and Jason, -1 "Bonus" SC for pointing out minor GM mistakes. No one likes a nitpicker. Smile
